When I visit my buddy in Long Beach, who lives in Belmont Shores, I pretty much come here at least once for lunch solo or with the happy couple for dinner. I've been here over 6x now and the food is pretty consistent. I usually order the soft fish taco but this time went out on a limb and ordered something different. They bring you complimentary chips and salsa and this place serves the chips as a whole deep fried tortilla!!! For appetizers we usually get their yummy guacamole and this time I tried their spicy wings - nothing special if you ask me. The Mexican pizza w/ PIG was the BOMB!!! Very good - flavorful and generous with slow roasted pork. It was quite large so I shared it with my friends. The wait staff here are Mexican. It's pretty cool to have them speak with that accent. Very authentic and I fully enjoy my dining experience here. Service is decent and they are attentive in getting your soft drinks and water glass filled. Street parking can be a hit or miss on 2nd Ave. But usually we can find meter parking but at times need to walk several blocks, which is not a problem for me. A local joint for some good and affordable mexican food. Highly recommend for lunch and dinner. Though I've only been here during lunch, the food and service has been satisfying. Patio and interior seating with some tvs makes for a nice chill spot to enjoy drinks and grub. Service has been friendly and attentive. The guacamole and salsa are very good here. The salsa has a nice flavor and kick to it. My favorite entrees so far are the tacos, chili relleno, carnitas combo, and the whole wheat chicken burrito if you want a smaller burrito compared to the other burritos on their menu. Their outdoor area is a charming spot to watch people pass by. The service is lovely. And the prices are very reasonable for what you get. The worst customer service ever. I ordered two horchatas right before they were closing, which I understand. First the hostess, refused to get it for us, despite it just being a drink. Again, I understand they were closing in 10 minutes. Then she said okay, but gave us water with a little bit of cinnamon. YES, WATER. When I went to get it exchanged, she refused to acknowledge me. I felt like I got ripped off and disrespected. At least let me know that you ran out of it or tell us we can come back the next day. It was extremely rude and disgusting. read more

I grew up going to Super Mex as a kid and now, as an adult, I can say Super Mex is my favorite Mexican food. I obviously took it for granted as a kid, but now, every time I'm back in Long Beach, it's the one place I have to visit. When friends would come visit from out of town when I was in high school, this is the place I would take them to. I just cannot say enough great things. The food is delicious. I usually get the #7 -- two shredded beef tacos with rice and beans. The atmosphere is fun (when indoor dining was allowed). The employees are friendly. What is not to like?! We have ordered takeout a few times during Covid-19 by calling, placing an order and picking it up. The food has always been hot, fresh and delicious. I've had supermex many years ago not from this location and it was decent so I went ahead and got the 2 item combo plate which was one cheese enchilada and 1 chicken crunchy taco with rice. The rice and the enchilada was good however the taco lacked in flavor. The chicken was not flavorful at all. Also ordered a side of red salsa that came with tostadas. The salsa was just ok for me. This Super Mex location was a real surprise - it's nothing like the giant, Super Mex restaurants in Orange County. This place is a hole in the wall and could almost pass for an independent store, not a chain. It's tiny and not fancy, but you can get the same great menu! I got my new favorite from the "Healthy" menu - the whole wheat green chicken burrito. I know its not healthy compared to having some plain brown rice and tofu, but its definitely healthier than the giant carne asada wet burrito that used to be my usual! It has whole beans instead of re-fried, green rice instead of lard rice, chicken instead of beef. That's where the healthiness ends, because then its coated with sauce, cheese and guacamole. Plus I get a side of sour cream (to make sure I get enough Vitamin D in my diet - no other reason, I promise) One of the best features is they have customer parking in the back, which is awesome since sometimes parking on 2nd Street is difficult. read more

Great service and food! Went today around 2pm and there was no wait. We were given a table super fast. Our waiter was the nicest person and checked in on us many times during our time there. My husband had the sopa de alobondiga and he said it was the best he has had! My plate was an enchilada and taco plate which was perfect! They give you tostadas and salsa when you arrive! I ordered a Carne Asada Burrito with no rice inside since the tortilla is enough carbs and I got a Bean Burrito with little pieces of meat. There was no guac, and if I dont want rice, it doesn't mean to put more beans in it. I'm not trying to cheat the system and get more meat, just make it not as thick of a burrito. Worst supermex. Salsa sucks it's sour. The albondigas meatball, first bite, eggshells yep I crunched something and I had pieces of eggshell in my mouth. My rice was wet and mushy!! Taco shell came out soggy, and split in half, it was completely wet. Chicken was bland. I opened up the bean and cheese burrito, and there was 2 bites of beans inside. We always try to support local and have had great food from Super Mex! We hadn't been able to get back since the shutdown and we were looking forward to it! However, the "chips" were clearly tostada shells broken in half, the "cheese" enchiladas had hardly any cheese or flavor and instead of "all beans" on the combo plate we got all rice. Their chips used to be house made and fantastic! The enchilada sauce was just spicy enough. This trip was disappointing to say the least. The flour tortillas were the lone saving grace. read more

Was taking a walk in this area and had to choose between 3 places to go for lunch. We ended up deciding to go with Super Mex because the place looked visually nice, the girl in the front sounded very polite, and the menu had items that sounds great to try. SERVICE; 4/5 Stars We were led to pick our own table. We were greeted and served drinks in a very timely manner. The waiter, Miguel, was very courteous and polite. In the deciding process, he was able to answer some of my questions. One question was asked about their grilled fi sh - what kind of fish was it. Although he did not know the answer, he went ahead and checked the kitchen to find an answer, unfortunately, no one knew what kind of fish was being used for their grilled fish plate. I still ended up ordering the grilled fish. I did specifically asked to get rice in place of the salad and any greens that may come with the plate. I then got up and verified that he understood that I simply wanted the fish and the rice ONLY. Appetizer of fried tortilla and salsa was served while we were waiting for the food. Our food came approximately 11 minutes after the order was placed. However, my plate came with vegetables that I explicitly requested not to have. But that's alright, small mistake, he took it back in and replaced it with a bit of rice. No harm, no foul. FOOD TASTE: 2.5/5 stars As for the taste, the rice was a bit hard and tasted a bit uncooked/crispy and dry. It was either that the rice was sitting for a longer period of time and then simply microwave heated OR, I got the very bottom of the pot where the hard and crunchy pieces were. In addition, the rice tasted a bit bland flavor wise; not fresh. I grew up in a family restaurant and worked at several so I am relatively familiar with food that may not be as fresh due t certain practices. The fish was great, nicely grilled; tasted much fresher than the rice. The marinate was flavorful and noticeable. Slightly crisp, not too oily, no complaints about the fish. My friend ordered a burrito that came with a plate of refried beans. The portioning of the burrito was on the medium to large side; however, the flavor was also rather bland. Overall presentation and color was acceptable but taste of the rice and the burrito could have been much better.
