Sushi Alive Asian Bistro & Raw Bar has one of the best Happy Hour drink & food specials in all of Westchase Area of Tampa! However, make sure you make reservations a week in advance if you want to come on a Friday, because on Fridays it's a 2 hour wait even though you can see many open tables. We came on a Friday and left after being told it's a 2 hour wait and came back for Saturday's lunch time happy hour 12-3PM and we're able to get a table without reservations without any issues. The open table and reservation process is not very efficient here sadly. We asked if we could make a reservation for next Friday on a Friday and they said you can only make a reservation for Friday on the Monday of that week. Most reservations for Friday's 5-7PM happy hour are all booked by Wednesday or Thursday usually. Happy Hour Specials include $1 Nigiri, $2 Sashimi, $3 Hand Sushi Rolls, $4 Classic Sushi Rolls, $3 Draft Beers, 2 4 1 House Wines, Monday through Friday 5-7PM and Saturday through Sundays 12-3PM. On Tipsy Tuesdays, get 2 4 1 Wells, 2 4 1 Saketinis, and $8 Sake flights! The Chocolate Martini was made all wrong, did not come with Godiva Chocolate liquor or Vanilla Vodka, and was the worst tasting Chocolate Martini I ever had. I mentioned this to the server and she said she didn't make the drink. The server should have had the bartenders remake the drink properly. I mentioned it again and the server said she would bring additional milk and chocolate. The drink was still terrible. I have been here when it is 100% a hit and then I've been here when it was a miss. Good thing, it is more times than not a hit. I had previously had a discussion with Ben on the "mainland" version of Poke and how it kinda drives me insane with all the "poke" places popping up that are not the traditional Poke at all based on how they are made and are really just a bowl with rice. I wish we could do half stars and although I would love to support local business , five rolls for two people should have been filling. We ordered the gator roll, Japanese bagel roll, Tampa roll, volcano roll, rising phoenix roll. The size of the rolls were smaller than what we are accustomed to , we are not big portion eaters but this left is still looking for snacks afterwards. Being our first time here we ordered some specialty rolls and some classics. None of which were very memorable - very mediocre and the best I can compare to is Publix sushi. The happy hour special is so worth it! The rolls are $4, they also have nigiri, sashimi and hand roll specials. My favorite rolls are always the Mexican, Florida and gator rolls. As for drinks they have specials on wine and beer as well as saketinis on tuesdays! I haven't had a chance to try it yet but they also have 8pm to close deals which seem super worth it including half off appetizers and sangria deals. The rolls are fresh, satisfying and yummy! I go to this place once a while. This time, We had fewer than 10 people, yet they charged a 20% so-called "large party service fee." For what? The same service as for one person. It was extremely busy, and we had to wait an hour and a half to get our food. And they charged an extra service fee on top of that? Ridiculous. I still gave the waiter a 25% tip--not for the service (because there wasn't any), but out of courtesy. To make things worse, the 20% large party service fee was included in the calculation for the recommended tip at the bottom of the receipt. Are you kidding me? The rolls on the menu started at $4 which was a bargain! The rolls were good and hit the spot. I got a Florida Roll, CA roll, and gator roll. I also got a side salad and miso soup. They have a full service bar and really nice outdoor seating. The location is tricky to get to and not the best but it has a good ambiance. Anytime I eat sushi, I always need my eel. SHASHIMI (conch, octupus, salmon, tuna) 4/5: Two slices of each & the low prices allowed me to retry octopus and conch; I rarely order them. The way they were sliced it didn't have too much finesse & texturewise I didn't like & couldn't commit to, so I gave it to my dog after I tried a couple small bites & made her due a few tricks. She happily ate it. lol Needless to say, I couldn't finish it all because I also ate some of my hubs wings from WWB. At the beg. This place can get pretty busy! Genesis, our server, was super adorable & nice. She made sure we were doing okay and everything was flowing well during our time there. Good amount of parking spots. The food is a little above average. Definitely loved the salmon nigiri! Also had the Florida Roll and dipped it in Unagi Sauce, perfect combo! The Steak was also great! asked for a medium rare, and it was cooked to perfection. Didn't really like the T-n-T mussel as much.. Too much of the wasabi and little bit of seasonings and japanese mayo. The bed of spring salad needs at least a dressing in the side. I've been to Sushi Alive when it was on Dale Mabry and thought it was solid. I was happy to hear they were opening in Westchase because my neighborhood is so hard up for decent dining choices, but I also saw that the initial reviews were less than stellar. I decided to hold off until there weren't large crowds and I can gauge Alive on a normal day. (Westchase restaurants don't get much support after its first few months...then only get extremely busy after evening school events in the area). I usually go to Samurai Blue for sushi close-by, and although I love Samurai Westchase, it just isn't as good (or as crowded) as the one in Ybor. On my daughter's birthday she wanted to finally try the new Sushi Alive location...so we went. We happened to be having dinner during happy hour, so that was a plus. The happy hour menu is decent. I can see myself coming back to happy hour for sure for the deal you get. Just know that if you make a modification you're back to paying regular roll prices...I had to because I like to order a Mexican without mayo and cream cheese in its place. I have a habit of drinking hot tea with my sushi and I have to say I thought that their jasmine tea is really good. I'm not used to really commenting on how good the tea is, so I was impressed by this small detail. I have to say that the rolls were pretty good, but items like Poke wasn't great. The service wasn't that great either. It took a while to get the sushi, but we were asked if they can go ahead and serve the kid meal first, however it came last (possibly forgotten). Also another server came to ask what my daughter was drinking and we almost didn't know what she was asking because she was rough with it. You could also clearly tell it was my daughter's birthday because we had just picked up a personal cake for her and she brought it in so it wouldn't sit ina hot car, but the server made no mention or ask who's Birthday it is. Look, I know not all restaurants have a birthday routine and that's okay, but if you're serving a table and you know it's someone's birthday just ask about it and say happy birthday...simple friendly service...sushi alive needs to clean it up. Service alone will have me running over to Samurai in the next plaza over when I have a sushi craving. Again, due to the happy hour I'll be back to give it another try. I'd love to up the stars in the future, but just like every Westchase restaurant (the only consistently stellar restaurant in the area is Fresh Bites) there is much left to be desired. Sushi Alive is one of the biggest Sushi Restaurants I've ever seen with a very large indoor area including a very long 3 sided Sushi Bar area at the center of the restaurant, a long Bar on the right side of the restaurant and plenty of indoor high top and half booth seating. The decor at Sushi Alive is very elegant with a blend of modern and authentic Japanese. Sushi Alive features a large covered and uncovered patio area for outdoor dining as well. Sushi Alive has a great happy hour 5-7pm Monday through Friday with $1 nigiri, $2 sashimi, $3 select happy hour hand rolls, $4 classic rolls. The catch is, a minimum $10 order is required. Every Tuesday, Sushi Alive has 2-4-1 Sake-martinis, 2-4-1 Well liquor mixed drinks, and $8 Sake flights. We came on a Sunday for lunch and sat at the right side bar. Our bartender was very friendly and helpful in recommending dishes and cocktails. To drink, we ended up getting a Chocolate martini featuring Godiva chocolate liqueur, creme de cacao, & vanilla vodka and a Maui Maui cocktail featuring Mount Gay rum, Malibu rum, banana liquor, pineapple juice w/ a Meyers dark rum floater. Our bartender told us it gets pretty busy during their happy hour and invited us to come back for it. For our entree we got the chicken pineapple teriyaki, the Tampa Sushi Roll with White Fish, and the Mexican Sushi Roll with tempura shrimp and avocado topped with spicy mayo and eel sauce. The entrees came out in under 10 minutes and were very tasty. The portion size of the chicken stir fry was very large and is big enough to split into 2 meals.
