Just ate here, it's the closest sushi joint to my place. It was AMAZING. The rolls were perfect everything was elegant. There's too many over the top sushi places that complicate things. But they have clenched the beauty for Japanese cuisine. The food we had was perfect. We started with some gyoza, normal thing to see but perfectly executed. Next was a hamachi collar, on the menu and it was simple and absolutely delectable. Had a bit if custom sushi(monkey brain.) Then we indulged in a house roll, full of fish and bite sized, as we all love. Following with an omakase and they delivered, fresh fish light and enticing. Saturday night my sister, bff and I were in town and looking for a decent sushi dinner. Thanks to Yelp we found this little, unassuming restaurant in a quiet strip mall. We were seated right away and treated like family by the sweetest woman! I think she may have been the owner. She had a smile on her face and happy to see us enjoying some absolutely delicious food! We each ordered an entree as well as a few rolls to share. My bff had the chicken teriyaki which she was ecstatic to see was chicken breast meat. My sissy had the New York strip and I had the kitchen bento. It comes with steamed rice, a couple of pieces of California roll and your choice of two items. I chose bulgogi and mixed tempura. Amazing!! All of our dishes came with a cup of miso soup and a small salad. Everyone was more than satisfied with their selections and the rolls were fresh and delicious! The food: I am in love with their bulgolgi. The flavor and texture is always spot on. I am not a fan of most fish meals. If there's a fishy taste to be found in the sushi or sashimi, I will sadly find it. Sushi In Joy has consistently given me excellent sushi, and when trying my husband's sashimi, I've had only the best experience. How do they make fish actually taste good? No idea but I'm a fan. I read a few other reviews that say the sushi is over priced. As I don't eat much sushi anywhere else, all I can say to that is, "Everyone I know that has eaten sushi or sashimi at Sushi In Joy has walked away talking about how much they loved their meals and how they want to go again soon." I think that's worth the price. The staff: My second time coming into Sushi In Joy, the staff recognized me and asked me how I liked my prior visit. Really? My second time there and I'm already a close friend? Awesome. The service is always fantastic. What to expect: When you arrive, they'll seat you with menus and then bring you hot towels to wipe your hands. They'll take your drink order, give you a few minutes to look over their menu, and then check back to see what you'd like to eat. This place is a hidden gem that's in a strip mall close to downtown Bellevue. The sushi here is very fresh and the service is very attentive. Reasonable prices too. If you come here make sure to try their super tuna sushi and their golden crispy roll. Tucked away in a short strip mall behind the Northtown Chevron station, Sushi in Joy is just what you want in a neighborhood restaurant. No, it's not destination dining. It's a quiet, unpretentious, comfortable little room with the kitchen about fifteen feet away and the staff obviously either A) all family or B) people who like each other quite a bit and love making their food. Everything we've had from their menu has been as solid as anything we've had at any sushi joint in the area. The service is attentive without edging over into smothering, and their timing - a vastly undervalued trait in restaurant service - is perfect. Stuff seems to show up just when you're ready for it and not a moment sooner or later. A famous celebrity chef recently opened a new multi-million-dollar restaurant in Bellevue and their service, to put it VERY mildly, is still - three weeks later - a complete train wreck. These folks make it look easy and unhurried, no matter how crowded the room gets. Can you get better sushi in the Seattle area? Yeah, you can. Will it be served in as quiet and meditative an atmosphere, at as reasonable prices as Sushi in Joy? Not in my experience. This is a very good, very professional neighborhood place that could easily pretend to higher prices and upscale atmosphere but, to their infinite credit, choose not to. read more

pros... a nice little japanese sushi restaurant. love the family setting, and they even have the sunkened tables in the back. the day we went, it wasn't busy, and so the service i think was really good. small, neat and clean space. the menu has all the favorites and all cooked very well. we had the tempura plate, chicken katsu, tonkatsu and saba shioyaki bento and some sushi (spicy tuna, and crunchy roll). the food comes out piping hot and fresh. the tempura should be eaten first and fast, as it does tend to get a bit oily after a bit. i only wish we had ordered some sunimono or some vinegared salad to cut some of the oiliness. but other wise the food was pretty good. service was excellent, and as we had a small child dining with us, they even gave us some origami paper, so we could entertain the little one. cons...a bit tucked away behind another building, so a bit hard to find, unless you know the area well. read more

Had lunch here the other day. Three words: STINGY RIP OFF. I had mentioned on my previous review that this place wasn't a bargain... well that's an understatement. The tip-off is when you see a House Green Salad on the lunch menu for $6.95 (which is about the price most Teriyaki joints charge for a full meal that includes a small green salad.) And this is a place that on their big special board at the entrance they are advertising they now have 20 oz. bottle soft drinks for $1.95! Whoo hoo! Got a Sushi Combo with CA Roll. Your standard middle of the road selection (salmon, tuna, shrimp, albacore, etc.) The cuts of fish were conveyor belt size... actually, SMALLER when you consider the thickness.. so thin they were translucent! (I should have taken a photo!) The diameter of the rolls are smaller than average. Mackerel (Saba) Nigiri is $1 more than Salmon (Sake) Nigiri. I love Mackerel but it's typically the cheapest fish you can get for Sushi (the brined Mackerel not Spanish Mackerel [Aji]) While I haven't tried it, I wouldn't argue against the people saying the bulgogi is good. The owners are Korean, not Japanese! Quality of food is still decent, nothing spectacular, and service is pleasant, but what you have here is a Mom & Pop restaurant off the beaten path that is trying to milk the N. Bellevue/E. Medina clientele to the max. Problem is, most of us Seattle/Eastside Sushi eaters are savvy and have many options. No more repeat business from me unless I see a Groupon. Men's bathroom kind of seedy with a broken urinal. This feels like they took a dark hole in the wall Teriyaki joint in a strip mall, put a sushi bar and two tatami rooms in, then doubled the prices. But if they can fill the place up at dinner 6 nights a week at those prices, I don't know whether to congratulate them or shame the oblivious clientele (including myself.) Seemingly very nice people but I've got to be honest. This can only be recommended if you live in the neighborhood, have a sushi craving, you don't mind overspending, and you don't want to go to Downtown Bellevue. (Or have a bulgogi craving - lol.) Being a long time Yelp user, I sense a fishy smell (pun intended) when I see 5-star reviews (especially when within days of each other) with statements like "the best Japanese menu I have witnessed", "as far as the east side there's no place that holds comparison" Are there crack dealers in this area? read more

The waitress (owner I think) was super friendly and really accommodated our large-ish group. However, pricing is far too high for the quality, which sadly isn't too great. It's a Korean owned sushi restaurant which usually means sub-par sushi, and this was no exception. Nothing was very good, from rolls to donburi. I was the only one there until I was getting ready to leave when some people showed up. Plus side is that its spacious and you shouldn't have any trouble getting a seat. The miso soup is delicious and I ordered a variety of different sushi rolls all were great! They have a wide selection to chose from and their menu explains the differences very easily something not all places have! And the lady running the place was absolutely the nicest Asian woman I've ever seen so friendly and knew all the customers ! Went to Sushi In Joy with my family for a quick bite on the recommendation of a friend. Not busy at 6 pm on a Thursday evening - in fact, we were the only people there. We were helped quickly and nicely enough. The decor is a bit dingy and outdated. The floor was sticky which I find very off-putting but since I was with the family I tried to ignore it. The sushi arrived quickly but not terribly quick as there were lots of take out orders being filled at the same time. The overall quality of the sushi was good but not great. The prices were not cheap. In fact, we have dined many times at Ginza just 2 miles away and the prices were very similar. Ginza has better quality sushi, a better atmosphere and better service. So if you are looking for sushi on the east side, skip this one. read more

A friend took me here for lunch. The first thing I noticed was the run down and old décor and the fact that it was freezing. I had to keep my coat on. The table was greasy and the place just didn't seem clean. We ordered 3 rolls - two 8 piece ones and a small 6 piece roll. One of the rolls had tempura flakes but it didn't say this on the menu so it was kind of greasy for me. Otherwise, no real complaints about the food. It came to just under $40 for this small amount of food. Given that the place felt dirty and run-down and wasn't even downtown (8 minute drive north), I would not go back there again. read more

I live right nearby and want to like this place, but I just can't. I go back there every two years or so and see if it's gotten better or changed hands. It's your standard Korean run sushi/Japanese restaurant with bulgogi on on the menu. They just don't apply the detail necessary to be a decent sushi place, nor are their dishes very good. We went there last Friday, and the "sushi chef" was on his phone half the time we were there. The rest of the time he had the personality of a lawn chair. He literally didn't know the difference between hamachi and maguro, and the $14 toro that I ordered was actually tough and chewy. My wife's yakisoba had a really bad sweet sauce on it, probably the same sauce they use on their bulgogi. Don't reward the place by going there just because it's close. Someday it could be displaced by a decent restaurant. read more

I want to give this place a 1, but the old lady running around the restaurant on ponies and rainbows while shooting faerie dust from her eyes wouldn't allow it. I will review this place again at some point. Everyone deserves a second chance. I changed my mind, they get a 1 until they prove otherwise. I ordered green tea and tempura udon. Pretty simple. Set me back $17, which is about what I'd expect to pay for this meal. I'm pretty sure my green tea had mutagen in it, yes the stuff that turns ordinary turtles into ninja turtles, because it tasted like toxic waste. But the little old lady delivered it with the gracefulness of a fairy godmother. My salad arrived next, fresh lettuce and some matchstick carrots sloppily smothered in an "authentic" Japanese dressing that was most assuredly purchased from the QFC next door. My tempura arrived, 5 minutes ahead of my udon. I pondered while I waited for my noodle soup if she thought i ordered tempura and udon instead of tempura udon. I plucked up a peice of batter covered shrimp nimbly with my chopsticks and it broke in half, about an inch away from where my chopsticks were holding it. The shrimp was so overcooked and heavy with grease that it literally broke under its own weight. I took a bite anyway only to confirm my suspicions: grease, dried out rubber, more grease. Okay so if the shrimp is overcooked, then assuredly my yam is perfect. I picked up the peice of tempura and bit in: grease, soft yam, hard cold yam, soft yam, grease. I wondered if the cook knew enough to put the thick vegetables in at a different time than the shrimp. I ate no more of it. Perhaps the udon will save this meal. After all it was obviously cooked last as it came out 5 minutes after my tempura. On top of the soup were presliced mushrooms, sliced dried out unchewable sponges, and fishcakes. I tried a fishcake and was amazed. How could a steaming bowl of soup have something in it that was still frozen in the center? Literally, frozen. The noodles, overcooked and complete mush. Mama-san asked if I wanted a box. Ha! When I told her no and she saw there was still 3/4 of my food still in front of me she looked slightly taken aback. But she didn't ask if anything was wrong and still brought my check to me as if everything was perfect in the world as long as she could ride around the restaurant on her unicorn and pretend there was no outside world. If she didn't understand that when a 300lb+ man walks away from a dinner table with most of his food still sitting there that something was wrong, then she deserves to fail. If you enjoy this place, then you need to do one of the following: 1.) taste real food, no not McDonalds 2.) taste real Japanese food, made by real Japanese people 3.) go back Oklahoma where they probably don't have any Japanese restaurants or eat anything other than steak and mashed potatoes. I will go back to this place to try the sushi. It seems only fair to judge a restauarant based on the food that is in its name. I'll be sure to pick up a microwave dinner from the QFC as a backup though. Update: Tried the sushi, kept the rating at 1 star. read more
