This is a wonderful Chinese restaurant in the Nob Hill area. Most of their menu consists of American-Chinese dishes but they do have some authentic food too. Upon entering the restaurant, there's a lot to be desired with the interior designing of the place. The place looks more like a hole-in-the-wall ambiance and some of the stuff seems out of place. Fortunately, that's all there is to complain about Tai Chi. The food and the service sets this restaurant apart from many of its competitors down the road in Chinatown. We ordered the House special fried rice and the crab meat cheese puffs. Both dishes were delicious and prepared for us rapidly. The front-of-house staff were very friendly too and came to refill our water glasses without us asking. Who da thunk this side of Russian Hill would have a worthwhile Chinese restaurant? After all, this is the strip of Polk that boasts Nick's Crispy Tacos and Miller's East Coast Deli. But sure enough, here is Tai Chi to save the day for Russian Hill residents and the rest of us willing to brave the 19-line to come here. It's a good-size space but unassuming, not offering much on decor. Energy seems wisely placed on the food, and judging from the number of paper bag orders on the counter, they must do a booming take-out business. We went for two standbys - a hefty Mongolian Lamb dish for $9.50 and the $8.50 Three-Ingredient Seafood Chow Fun, which was a bit too oily for my taste. In case you're wondering, the three ingredients were prawns, scallops and I think some kind of whitefish. The portions are generous, and there was no brown sauce to be seen on anything. It all tasted fresh all things considered. I would put this one on par with Red Jade on Church. Its just good to know that a little exploration yielded a viable option for good Chinese food. Mother's Day. Pandemic. I figured I could order and drive the 25 minutes from south Oakland to home before they'd even have time to look at my order, let alone get it into the delivery driver's hands. Wrong. 12 minutes later (because I suspect the laws of physics cease to exist in their kitchen), the delivery driver was at my front door, calling me to ask where I wanted the food. Twelve minutes. Tried this place twice. First time i thought it was pretty good. I liked how they separated the walnut sauce from the shrimp so that it wasnt soggy. But i noticed the breading really wasnt that great. It looked like it was just tossed in flour. I tried their house fried rice. I liked how the meat tasted like it was grilled. This place has good food, but they're prices aren't correct. The food is much spicier and seems fresher than the Chinese food I am used to from DC. They have good soups and entrées, but they charge extra for rice. The location was easy to find. They website I ordered from had different prices. When I asked the cashier about the bill, she told me it was through a third party or something to that effect, i.e. denying culpability of the price hike. Well, okay, but how would dumbo-me as a customer know that? My first suspicion was to think, "oh... the ol' bait-n-switch routine huh?", but it was probably a miscommunication. In any case, the proper thing to do would be to match the price and tell the webmaster or whomever to fix the price issue later, but the former at least was not done. This spot was not for me. I've tried many Asian cuisines but Tai Chi didn't meet standards of other restaurants. I've had the chicken chow mien, fried wontons, and Thai tea. The Thai tea tasted great but the chicken chow mien and wontons were inedible. The chicken chow mien was way too salty and had too much grease/oil on it which gave the noodles a different texture. The chicken itself did not taste like chicken. It was thin and flabby which made me feel like i was biting into a piece of rubber. The salsa that was included tasted like tapatío mixed with Siracha. The wontons were no better. They were fried up pieces of dough that had no flavor or meat contained within them. Safe to say I did not finish them and threw the rest away. I expected more but instead got bread with sweat and sour sauce on the side (my description of the wontons) I loved the service as the cashier was nice and kind but I am most likely not coming to this location again. read more

Tai Chi is a consistently good spot for Chinese food be it eating in or getting take-out via Eat24. Delivery is pretty quick and efficient and they've never messed up my orders. The menu is pretty extensive with usual Asian-American faves like General Tso's but they also have quite a few more "authentically" Chinese dishes like black mushrooms with tender greens, spinach with bamboo shoots, and twice-cooked pork. Favorites here include the afore-mentioned dishes but I also like the Mongolian beef, three mushrooms and asparagus, and the Szechuan Chicken. Pretty generous portions ensures leftovers. All up a pretty dependable spot if you're tired and too lazy to cook. Place an order with Tai Chi and you should be set in about a half hour. read more

Yuck. I ordered BBQ Pork with Chinese veggies and it was disgusting. Had absolutely NO taste at all. I can cook my own chinese food at home that is delicious (I'm visiting - so much for best Chinese food in US). Didn't even come with rice (another $3). Got myself some comfort noms for the night ahead! Yet another review from this office worker. Siu mai (pork dumplings): Slight (normal, expected) pork flavor, perhaps even a bit on the dry side but I like that better than oily. Har gow (shrimp dumplings): Skin was on the thicker side of things and interefered with the pairing with the shrimp. The shrimp filling was fine, although, again, on the dry side of things again. The skin on this tasted a bit perfumey-- as if someone had washed their hands with soap and then kneaded the flour, which is great, hygenic and all, but...not really a taste you want in food? Shrimp with three kinds of mushroom: Well, they didn't skimp on shrimp in the dish, which is always nice. Still had a bit of soy sauce / oil on it, despite my healthy less oil and soy sauce pleas, but significantly less than normal. Shrimps were tender, not overcooked. Some were cooked to still be springy in your mouth-- just the way I like them. Green peas were not stringy. A solid spot for American-style Chinese food. read more

I've been coming here since college in 90s. The generals chicken Was the best anywhere, but as of 2019 it is now sadly just orange chicken you could get at any cafeteria in the mission. We also had the Hong Kong crispy noodles with pork. The pork was very chewy. Not tender. We also had the iron skillet beef. I liked it, but my friend wouldn't eat it for some reason. All of what he served was left on his plate. Service ok. Never refilled our tea even though we had it open in the end if our table for half the meal. I wish they'd bring back the original generals recipe. Maybe the Tangs sold or just aren't overseeing the business anymore. Sad. read more

This is my go to place for general Cho's chicken, & spicy green beans that aren't spicy but still delicious. Their beef chow fun is good but doesn't keep well so you have to eat it all when you order. Their walnut honey prawn is delicious, my favorite. My coworkers even eat it without the Mayonnaise because they didn't know to mix it in in out to go order. The lemon chicken is yummy too. I also get a few of their veggie dishes, house eggplant is good and their mushroom over mustard greens. This is my go to place when my hospital has potlucks. It always get devoured. The staff is nice and the food is hot. Their hot and sour soup is good too and they have a corn soup. Love their soup. They have a lot of great choices! read more

This place used to be the place to go for Chinese food.... that was year's ago. Now it's just a hugely overpriced restaurant serving mediocre basic Chinese food. Lunch, with tip, cost us $50 and that was with 2 lower priced lunch specials and a half order of potstickers. My god, what would dinner of cost us?
