I love this place! I always order takeout after getting a blow dry around the corner at Drybar. The food is tasty and fresh and inexpensive. Portions are really nice. I love the wonton and roast pork soup and the chicken in black bean sauce is to die for. I've been there during lunch special and chose the egg roll for my side and it came with a drink. When you first walk into a restaurant, what do you want to smell? The aroma of the restaurant's food of course! However, that is not the case with Tang's Garden. I have eaten here a couple of times for a quick lunch and almost every time I enter the restaurant, the smell is nauseating. It seems like a mix of some cleaning solution and a dirty mop. Would you still want to eat with that smell wafting through the air? The place is also very dingy looking, the plates, utensils, and napkins aren't the cleanest either. Service is VERY casual. They can be pretty rude sometimes. The female servers are very nice, but the male servers have that "what do you want?!" attitude when taking your order and they do not have the friendliest look on their face either. It felt like they just wanted to get everything over with and get us out of there before we even started ordering. The food is better than the service, but nothing spectacular. I have only eaten general tso's chicken and sesame chicken here and the chicken tends to be slightly overcooked. There are also flies flying around as you eat, which is pretty annoying. I want to focus on enjoying my food when I'm eating at a restaurant, not have to swat around after every bite! Overall, not your best bet if you want to eat around this neighborhood. Ambiance is no good, service is no good, decor is no good, and the food is meh. Take your money elsewhere. There are plenty of better restaurants around. Tang's Garden is the official new name of "Tang Tang Noodle and More". I have no idea why they changed the name, as the menu is exactly the same, of what I can tell. I was very upset and scared when Tang Tang originally "closed for renovations" and reopened as Tang's Garden because of one special dish, that I have never seen or tasted anywhere else. This dish is called Dry Sauteed Tangy Crispy Beef. It is a delicious and decadent dish of beef that has been fried in a sweet and sticky sauce. Not really sure what's in there, but what I do know is that once you try it, you keep coming back for more. Although technically in the appetizer section, its perfect entree size and is best with white rice. I often choose Sauteed Baby Bok Choy with fresh garlic, as my other dish. The baby bok choy is nice and light and fresh, which really complements the rich Crispy Beef dish. Otherwise, Tang's Garden/ Tang Tang is a solid neighborhood Chinese restaurant that has stood the test of time. I've been going to Tang's for many years when I'm in town to visit my Mom on East 74th St (tough to find really good Chinese food in New Orleans!) and have always enjoyed it but this visit was especially yummy. Started with 2 veggie egg rolls. The stuffing was so fresh and tasty. Then did the Chow Fun noodles (aka "Drunken Noodles" I believe) with chicken/pork/shrimp and a small side of Steamed Baby Bok Choy in oyster sauce. Both were absolutely delicious. The thin, flat noodles were melt-in-my-mouth scrumptious (they made me think that this is what a 1000 count sheet would taste like) with a lovely but not overpowering sauce. There was a generous amount of the chicken, pork and shrimp (the size of crawfish which was fine). The Bok Choy was equally delicious with bits of garlic slivers among the bok choy. After the madness of Mardi Gras with its accompanying ubiquitous finger foods, it was a treat to have something innately healthy! Off to have the leftovers now :-) read more

Tang Tang is a very laid back Chinese restaurant that does a lot of take out and delivery. While the dishes might not constitute a seriously traditional Chinese masterpiece, Tang Tang turns out some pretty delicious, albeit typical, Chinese food. Tang Tang is neon green inside. Clearly, one cannot be expecting anything four star. The kind, frazzled looking manager seated my boyfriend and I and we were immediately given water and menus by a waitress. There is a huge selection of dishes, ranging from Cantonese Style BBQ Roast Meats and Dim Sum to Hong Kong Style Casserole and Mandarin Noodles. My boyfriend selected one of the "House Specialties" -- #94. Hong Kong Style Pan-Friend Noodles (Very thin noodles pan-fried and covered with shrimp, scallops, calamari, fish cake, and assorted vegetables) for $11.50. I chose standard fare, #162. Shrimp w. Mixed Vegetables for $11.75. We also decided to #74. Steamed Meat Dumplings (8) for $4.00. The dumplings arrived with sauce in a tiny bowl with a plastic spoon. Okay, the place is neon green, and did I mention some gutted ducks and chickens hanging in view from the kitchen? I get it. But plastic spoons? Eesh. The sauce was a sweet soy sauce mix, not very impressive. The meat dumplings were doughy and slightly greasy with a meatball-y center that the dough had separated from. My boyfriend thought they were tasty, and though I could give him that, I would definitely not order these dumplings again. The entrees arrived, and my mood perked up considerably. The jagged edged carrots was a frozen-veggie give away, but I didn't care. The vegetables in both dishes were fresh-tasting and crisp. My boyfriend had his seafood mixed with broccoli, carrots, baby corn, mushrooms, and snow peas in a light clear sauce of little fried noodles. He loved the dish and ate most of it before deciding to take the rest home for a midnight snack. My shrimp and vegetables was great! The brown sauce had a good ginger kick to it, and I would go as far as to label the shrimp prawns. I would say there were about 8-10 big shrimp, along with broccoli, baby corn, zucchini, snow peas, mushrooms, carrots, and some bok choy. Both portions were very big, I certainly have enough for lunch tomorrow. Tang Tang is a great neighborhood spot for some decently-priced Chinese that will hit the spot. This place is not like it used to be. I went on a Sunday afternoon and just missed their lunch special. So I ordered the red bean buns and curry chicken noodle soup. Now I admit this dish is superb-perfect noodles and seasoning. However, I've never had to wait so long for a bowl of soup at an empty restaurant in my entire life (there were two couples in there and me). I seriously waited almost 30 minutes for the stupid buns alone. Then more waiting for the stupid soup. The server was unapologetic and barely acknowledged my existence. Yelp currently categorizes this place as 'dim sum.' Dim sum, alas, is precisely the thing this restaurant cannot do. Visiting one sunny Saturday, we ordered a modest, representative round: scallion pancakes, assorted dumplings, pork buns, red-bean buns. Everything tasted like it had been picked up from the frozen aisle of a Chinese grocer's then hastily heated up. Granted: it's not rare to discover that your food wasn't made on the premises the day of. But they did such a lame job of concealing that fact. I wanted to like this place. It's got a cute name. It's got smoked poultry carcasses in the windows -- a preciously rare sight on the UES! It's got the color scheme of mint-gel toothpaste. But go elsewhere for dim sum. The noodle selection does seem more promising. Although I can't vouch for that, I grant this place a second star on reasonable doubt. read more

Tang's Garden - 3&1/2 Stars The Good, Tang Tang Noodles are another rendition of cold sesame noodles, they're pretty decent, actually kind of addictively delicious, just not a part of a well balanced meal on their own. My only issue, they cost as much as a lunch special, Hot & Sour Soup, is it the epitome of the dish? No. But it is both Hot & Sour, so it's OK. (Some places seem to make it black pepper hot, but forget to add the rice wine vinegar.) The Service. It's courteous and attentive. (Again I'm reading these reviews where people seem to expect that when they sit down for their $7.95 lunch special, service should be on par with "Daniel." It's a reasonably priced Chinese Hole in the Wall, do you really need to be coddled by subservient wait staff? Most people I see eating here don't even appear to leave a tip.) Tang's Garden does a really busy lunch, and offers something like 40 lunch specials (What we used to call combination plates) and is usually crowded with the staff from Lenox Hill Hospital around the corner. My big problem, all of their szechuan style food kind of tastes the same, not bad, just the same. (Guess I have to try some other dishes.) Again it's CHEAP! Today has been a day from hell. And hoping it would get better I decided to treat myself to lunch. Let's just say my appetite is ruined for the day. Some people may call it an exaggeration but I think finding someone else's hair in your food is absolutely disgusting. I ordered two egg rolls for lunch and as I'm enjoying the first one almost down to about 4 more bites there's a long black strand of hair in the roll actually intwined the veggies. I'm completely disgusted. I go back to complain they ask me if I want another one. Ummm no I think not. I want my money back. He offers me a credit. A credit to be used when I order something again. The Goal: I have heard about Tang Tang since the day my boyfriend and I started dating. He grew up on the UES and it is his self proclaimed favorite spot. As some of you may know, Tang Tang has been closed for renovations and so until last night all of these stories were just that, a fairly tale in the world of Chinese food. First Impression: Incredible! Best egg drop soup of my life, and I am not just saying that to stay on my bf's good side. On a night like last night, with blistering wind and snow, there really is nothing better than sitting down to delicious soup. The thick broth, the abundant eggs and some surprising corn made this soup absolutely to die for! GO GET SOME NOW! The Specifics: The rest of the meal was delicious. Get an order, or 9, of dumplings, they are crazy good. Fried to perfection, moist and not greasy -- what more could you possibly ask for? We had outstanding chicken with string beans (ask for it to be spicy, its so good) and Singapore mai fun (curry style) which was good, and very plentiful, but nothing out of the ordinary. Final Analysis: This place is really great. Chinese food may be a dime a dozen here in the city, but I can tell you it has taken me quite a long time to find a place where everything tastes as good as it does here. Best feature is convenience for takeout if you live nearby, but sadly it is not up to standard for even a basic Chinese joint. Egg rolls - my test - are a C, lacking any real flavor. The cold noodles are a B-, basic, fine enough. The dumplings, which also take some skill, are atrocious - leaden, gummy and whose bad-tasting dough dominates any flavor of whatever might be inside. I could go on, but not in - as the interior is depressing and frankly ... smells inappropriately (every time I've been in). So if you need an emergency egg roll, ok. Been eating their food for years and I'm glad that they've maintained the quality which has me coming back again and again. Prices are fair for Manhattan, service is always friendly, and the food is excellent. The interior is a little worn down, but it has it's charm. I pickup take out from here every few weeks or so. I like their roast pork wonton soup - it's too salty - but full of tasty wontons and the roast park infuses the soup with a great flavor. The secret to many restaurants in NYC such as this one is don't use the bathroom. Double update! Went out on a limb and figured I would try Tang Tang, yet again. Just wanted to stop in quickly and get egg drop/wonton soup and some roast pork lo mein. Meh. The wait was 10+ minutes... normally okay but the soup should have been ready to go immediately, and the lo mein should have taken 5 minutes. I spent 5 minutes of my wait watching someone pack up my bag of food. I was also annoyed that when I asked for a suggestion of which noodles to order (looking for a specialty or something I wouldn't necessarily guess to order) I was just told to get lo mein. How vanilla. The lo mein, I will admit, was better this time than the last time I got it -- which was 2 years ago, before I wrote this place off -- since it was not nearly as oily. It was just okay though, and nothing special. I'd never actually eat here though... it is just awful inside. Zero ambiance and the music is dreadful. The egg drop/wonton soup was pretty good though. Food is decent but the service is HORRIBLE. The gentlemen in the picture I took made it seem like I was asking for a million dollars as opposed to asking what was on the dessert menu. He said unnecessarily loudly "no dessert!" "No ice cream only cookie!" He also dropped the check off when I was on the 2nd bite of my meal. On top of the fact it was SLOW at about 3:45pm when I arrived. So being busy was not the case! Customer service was horrible by this gentlemen. I have to say, I have ordered from this restaraunt for years and the food is always good. I only order from the vegetarian choices so I can't vouche for the meat dishes. I was surprised to find some harsh reviews on yelp because I have always enjoyed the quality of the food and the portions are enormous. I can usually make several meals out of two entrees and some appetizers over a weekend. the service is always fast and friendly. I usually order take out or delivery, but the atmospere is pleasant enought for a casual lunch or dinner. recently I shared a take out menu with some elderly neighbors who also really enjoyed the food. for Chinese that is not too expensive on the upper east side, I do recommend this restaraunt. read more

I'm so glad this place is still standing! First off, if you are looking for satisfying Chinese take out, THIS is the place. I've known Tang's Garden since I was kid and when it was called "Tang Tang Noodle Shop." I loved the place then because it had the BEST Cold Noodles and Sesame Sauce dish in the City. The great part is, IT STILL DOES! I'm new to the Upper East Side and haven't quite settled in yet. Tang's Garden made me feel at home.Their BBQ Spare Ribs were juicy, Scallion Pancakes were just as I always remembered them: crispy yet soft, and of course the Cold Noodles with Sesame Sauce had just the right blend of peanut spiciness. Of course the prices have gone up for most dishes, (although the Cold Noodles still remain a bargain -- which I hope they don't change!) but this is NYC in 2010 and I don't blame them: folks have to stay alive. I ordered an appetizer beef skewer and literally I received ONE skewer for $6.50 consist of 3 pieces of flavored-less beef and lots of peppers and onions that is fried (not grilled). Then comes their famous cold "sesame" noodles, which wasn't too bad. But truly missing some finer details. The cold sesame noodles need some veggies (preferably crispy and crunchy cucumbers) and sprinkling of sesame seeds. The decor leaves little to be desired. Ahh, marinated beef strips with Chinese jalapeno peppers... What's the Chinese word for "delicious"? Quick delivery and while I've had beef with Chinese peppers at other Chinese digs, this is my new favorite. Large helpings, lean beef marinated in a smokey, savory and sweet sauce. The BF had Celestial Chicken, browned chunks of white meat chicken, mixed veggies over rice with a savory brown sauce, not so spicy but delicious. The prices were a wee bit steep for Chinese delivery; Two entrees and two canned sodas were $29. Paying that much for Chinese in New York is nearly unheard of; but the portions helped make up for it a bit since we had enough for dinner and a little left over for lunch the next day. I came here with low expectations, as the decor and ambiance are pretty much at the same level as your average public school cafeteria. Also, the entire place smelled of rank fish. My girlfriend was covering her face until the food arrived because of the fishy stench. Thankfully, service was quick, and the food was above average. The fried rice was light and eggy, the egg drop soup was pretty standard, and the roast pork buns were different from what I've had, but still tasty (also- they're about the size of softballs). My husband & I were in the area and decided to give this place a try. We were seated immediately. Our waiter quickly brought us water and menus. We order the steamed pork dumplings, chicken with broccoli, shrimp fried rice. Our waiter asked if we wanted to wait for the dumplings or would it be ok to serve it a little after the meal. He explained the dumplings take a bit longer. I thought that was nice to ask because otherwise we would have wondered what's taking so long. We opted to receive our food first and later the dumplings. Food arrived in about 5 mins - very quick. Chicken with broccoli was fresh and the shrimp fried rice was a huge portion. The dumplings came out 5 mins after we started to eat. Everything tasted so good and our waiter was attentive refilling our water glasses. It's a bit pricey but it is the Upper East Side so shouldn't be a surprise. I wouldn't necessarily trek up there to eat this place but it's good to know that if I am in the area I could come back here to enjoy a meal. read more

Tang Tang has the most awesome lunch special I've encountered on the Upper East. $5.25-$5.50 for a selection of their more popular dishes and it comes with soup or soda, your choice. How freakin' awesome is that? Food is pretty good, not stellar but definitely edible. They do put corn in their egg drop soup which gets a frowny face from me, though. The sweet and sour chicken and pork lo mein were tasty and we both received healthy proportions, even at lunch. Their shrimp toast got a thumbs up from the boyfriend, too. I did feel a little rushed. When I was younger, we used to eat at Tang Tang downtown. This is a different location and they've renamed to "Tang's Garden". I've been here twice, after going to some museums. I don't remember the exact dish I ordered the first time, but the chicken wasn't really good and the vegetables were overcooked and not well seasoned. The second time I ordered szechuan beef. The beef was not spicy at all, it was chewy and fatty, and really just crappy beef. The fried rice wasn't even good, either. I really wouldn't recommend going here-- it's nothing special, not even good neighborhood chinese food. read more

Maybe they're behind on the rent, as things on this block are going increasingly upscale, but they are using cheap fillers and delivering a completely subpar product. For many years my standard order was wonton soup with mai fun noodles and white meat chicken which for a dollar extra got you boneless breast meat. Now for the same price they give you one or two mushy wontons and some shredded mystery meat. No more Chinese vegetable or broccoli but canned snow pea and baby corn and a few slivered carrots. This was my "go to" Chinese restaurant until one evening I ordered the spareribs! Some of the ribs were not meaty as in all other restaurants in which I have dined. I mentioned this to the Management and the answer was that this a rack of ribs and this is how it comes. Abrupt, Rude and definitely not customer service friendly.
