Growing up, this was one of the HK cafe I frequently visited in the SGV area. It's a small dingy place but it gives the vibes of your typically HK cafe because of all the posters of HK/Taiwanese concert posters flooding the entrance of the restaurant and the old style homey interior. I love this type of mom n pop shops over the "modern" and "minimalistic" look. We came on New Years Day and it was slightly busy depending on when you get there. We got there around 11am and it wasn't bad, but an hour later there was a line waiting. We came for the lunch special which was between 11-3pm, and the food is serve with a complimentary cold/warm drink (cold drink has an additional cost). I got the Baked Pork Chops in Tomato Sauce and the sauce was good, but for some reason I felt like the flavor didn't stick to the spaghetti like I'm used to. It felt bland for some reason even though I stirred the spaghetti and the sauce. It taste like they didn't salt the spaghetti. I'm giving it a 6/10 compare to other shops I been to. The Wonton Dish was pretty good, I enjoyed it like that instead of in a soup base. It was simple and packed with flavor. The only thing I didn't like from this experience was that it took 30 minutes for the server to serve us our drinks after we placed our order. Love this place!! Tasty Choice is a certified SGV classic. Delicious comfort food, great vibes, clean place, and great service. Really nothing more you could ask for. This place is great for swing shift workers as well, since they're open late into the morning. Every time I've come here, the service has always been so attentive and friendly. There's free parking in front of the restaurant and it's very easy to find parking. The food is incredible too, so far nothing I've tried has been bad. I stopped by for breakfast here for the first time. Service was very friendly, and I'm happy to report that more comfortable seating is now available. Their breakfast offerings are inexpensive and filling, and you can choose between "Western" and "Chinese" breakfast options. For $10.95, you can get a large bowl of congee of your choice, a side of your choice, and a cup of hot coffee or tea. Carb heavy? Starting off 2024 on a positive note! I'm glad I stumbled upon Tasty Choice. It's an Asian cafe that is open late and has a huge variety of items on the menu. From coming here a few times I would have to say that everything that I've ever ordered was definitely tasty and none of their food has disappointed me. The Tofu with brown sauce is really good and it's done correctly. The Kung Pao chicken has onions and peppers and not just a bunch of chili peppers. The beef spaghetti stir fry is an absolute must try. It tastes really good. Most of their entrees come with free rice. The service here is really good. They come check up on you often. They refill your tea and water really quickly and I've never had my cup go dry. The inside of this place is a bit small. It's not a very big restaurant which means there is a wait sometimes. It's also relatively clean and there is only one shared bathroom. Parking can be an issue for some reason. I came at like Midnight and there were only a few customers but the parking lot was packed! Very disappointed! I come to this restaurant a lot because I like their food. However, today's experience was very disappointing. I came with a friend and we ordered two lunch plates. Her food came in time. After waiting 15 minutes for my food, I alerted the waitress. She said that the kitchen was working it. After another 10 minutes, I inquired about the status of my order. She assured me that they were working on it. Another five or 10 minutes, my friend had finished her lunch and my order was still not ready. I inquired again. Then somebody told me that the kitchen missed my order. At that point, I had to leave for another appointment. They did pack my order to go for me, but I don't think I ever received an apology. First time I was here was with my uncle when I was a kid. He passed in 2002 and this place is still in business so it was on my radar to check out. I had dropped off my car at Tire Central and was walking over to Tam's for breakfast when I spotted this place on the way and popped in to try their breakfast. I ordered their macaroni soup/sandwich/tea combo for under $10. I actually liked it better than some of the other HK breakfast spots in the area. The prices here were several dollars cheaper too. This is my ultimate guilty pleasure when it comes to Hong Kong cafés. The Singapore-style vermicelli and the eel with curry fried rice are absolutely to die for--comfort food at its finest. We were looking open restaurants in San Gabriel at 10:30pm and this place showed up on my search This place is super great for starving night folks. Restaurant was packed the moment we dined in and music's volume was fine, not that loud. I was little bit sick that time and ordered Wonton Soup, while my husband ordered Hainan Chicken Rice. Service was great, the lady staff was so nice and attentive. The only downside that I think not OK, the rice was dry on Hainan Rice and it kinda ruin the taste. You will have high expectation of this food, as one of signature Hongkong foods (in Hongkong concept restaurant). We used to frequent our local Phoenix Food Boutique for late-night Chinese food, but in recent years, Phoenix's food quality decreased and they scaled back their business hours. So one day, we discovered Tasty Choice in San Gabriel and never looked back. Tasty Choice SG is now one of our favorite late-night hangout spots, along with the HK Macau Bistro down the street. As of writing, Tasty Choice is open till 2 AM and closed Mondays, which is our kind of hours. Last call is at 1:30 AM, so I advise coming in before then. Their rice dishes and veggies are top-notch, but their noodle dishes are not as good as HK Macau Bistro's. There is some overlap between the menu items between the two restaurants, but both have some unique menu items. Wonton noodle soup though is pretty good here. Our go-to dishes include the pork rib in Peking sauce as well as the sauteed string bean. The shrimp and egg on rice entree is also awesome and tastes a lot like egg drop soup on rice. And the Japanese-style salmon and seafood fried rice is excellent too. And although my girlfriend and I are trad in a cuisine sense and hate fusion food in general, we were pleasantly surprised with the "German style pig's knuckle," even though it tasted like it had a lot of five-spice powder in it, which is more Chinese. Sometimes the garnishes on them differ depending on who is working the kitchen that night (sometimes we'll get more onions on the entrees or very little, for example). Overall, you can't seem to go wrong with most of the menu items. We always try something new every time we come, but we have our favorite staples listed above. Outdoor dining is available, but sometimes there are people smoking there. We don't smoke, so often times we just eat indoors, but if you get a seat next to the outdoor dining area, cigarette smoke can sometimes waft in. Staff here is very friendly and recognize us now as regulars (they even know what drinks we enjoy, P.S. the HK milk tea and coffee and Thai iced tea here are very good. Really love the passion fruit slush here too), and have reasonable communication skills, though I can tell with some of them that English is definitely not their first language. I can't speak Mandarin or Cantonese very well, and my girlfriend can't speak them at all, but they are very forgiving of that. Be careful if feeding young children, as the chops are not de-boned completely with some cartilage and bone fragments attached; NOT a complaint, it's just how the dish is made. -Hainan Chicken: Not my favorite but my mom thought it was good. I thought the chicken was too boney and ginger sauce was salty. -Pepper Steak Cubes with rice and corn: can't go wrong with this dish. Steak was tender. Nice flavor. I was looking for a late night Hong Kong cafe open to grab some dinner with friends. Luckily, this place was open at 11 pm! The parking lot was pretty spacious. I was surprised to see the parking lot full when we arrived. When we walked through the door, the restaurant was packed. I guess others had the same idea as me. The restaurant does seem a bit cramped and small. Our server led us to a table. Like any Hong Kong cafe, the menu is extensive. Anything you're craving, you can probably get it. I ordered a baked creme sauce with spinach and fish fillet over rice. That's my to go dish everytime I eat at the cafes. I ordered an iced lemon tea. I wanted to try the pineapple buns with butter. However, you had to order 2 orders of that for some reason. The nice thing about this cafe was they give refills on the lemon teas! So drink to your heart's content! To be honest, it was pretty loud in the restaurant, so I felt like I had to talk loudly in order to hear other people. Just keep that in mind if you want to have a conversation! I enjoyed my dish. Nothing beats eating a hot, cheesy spoonful of creamy rice and fish. It did need a bit of salt though. The XO fried rice honestly tasted like nothing. My boyfriend told me that in the middle of the dish, there was a big clump of XO sauce. The pineapple buns with butter were disappointing. The top layer wasn't as crispy as I liked it. Plus, the slabs of butter they put inside the buns were small. The lemon tea was refreshing and not too sweet. One of the better options out there if you want Hong Kong style cafe food. With the prices now, Tasty Choice is decent for the price. Haven't dined in here for years, but this review is based solely on take out. Over the phone, the lady was very patient on taking our order even though we were unfamiliar with the items listed specifically on the menu and took a minute. Usually these cafes are bustling and get impatient via phone, but didn't experience that here. (Later, we realized that their store wasn't busy at all. However, we did order another time and noticed there was a difference between day & night. Night time is definitely busier.) Over the last 2 times we've ordered, all the dishes were up to par and packed to the brim. Our family favorites are beef curry, baked chicken with cheese and tomato sauce, baked sole fish fillet with spinach & crème and the pepper bites with tomato rice. Although not bad in flavor, I would not recommend the baked pork chop with tomato sauce because they just do not give as much sauce compared to the baked chicken. I would not recommend the walnut shrimp either. The taste was okay but for the price point ($18+) you can definitely get somewhere else that's better in size. They do not use the jumbo shrimps. It's not the visual you'd expect when ordering a walnut shrimp dish. If you want something light in taste, the XO Seafood Stir Fry Noodles fits the category. Not a lot of flavor, but the thin noodles and texture reminds me of Singaporean noodles. Overall, it's quick service and has late hours with ample parking. Comfort food at its best at midnight! Friends and I came after a late neon party and we were allllll hungry so wanted some congee and finger food and what better place than Tasty Choice. We ordered fish with the 1000 year old egg congee, pork chop rice, and hotpot with seafood and curry dish. Also got some noodles shown below. Definitely best comfort food. It was good, but it was also way too oily. It would be excellent if it was not too oily. Please use less oil. Ambiance: I like that they have Television inside the the restraunt that we can watch while waiting for our food.
