Came here for lunch on a hot summer day. Outdoor dining section was open with shade and ceiling fans. Ordered a lemon iced tea and the #73, Grilled and Cutlet Chicken Steak. Portion was pretty good for lunch. Chicken steaks were juicy. The cutlet steak had some breading separating but it was still yummy. Service was good. Tasty Choice is located in San Gabriel and has been here since I was little! It's a small cafe filled with different Asian-style dishes. Got some stuff from lunch I had ordered the stroganoff beef which they make a total based on vegetables and pasta. The grilled chicken was also nice and they had a sign for shark fin soup so I ordered that as well. I don't believe it's real shark fin it's just how the flavor is and the ingredients inside that remind me of the past. Overall all the dishes came out quickly and the food was enjoyable! This place used to be great many years ago, and we wanted to come back and see if the dishes were still the same. We ordered three dishes and all were a letdown. The eel fried rice strangely had curry powder in it which clashed with the Japanese flavor of the eel. The hai nan chicken was cold, flavorless, and barely had any meat. Everything was tasty, except for the hot dog that was weirdly sour. I tossed it aside after two bites. The steak is no Morton's, but it was tender and well cooked at medium rare. Pork chop was tasty, tender, and juicy. I've been coming to Tasty Choice since I was a kid, but they seem to be under new management! I came recently for a large family dinner and they were able to easily accommodate our party of 20! We called a day before to see whether they took reservations and were so glad to find that they did! We asked for a table of 20, with low hopes since it was so last minute but they were so kind and reserved space for us immediately! The service was impeccable! The portion size was solid, you get a large piece of chicken steak for $15, and it comes with either rice or spaghetti. I chose spaghetti, though my parents got rice and they thought it was very dry. The food took awhile to come out, 25 minutes for our two orders. Well, it's been awhile since I've been here, and I remember this place had a great braised short rib plate. Didn't know if they still had it available, or was the place under new ownership, or was the place still any good. Many questions, unanswered. So, one way of finding out the answers to these question is to just show up and find out for ourselves. To our surprise, they're still in business, new ownership from just under 2 years and they still have that braised short rib plate. Well, the short rib plate was one our favorite things to order, and ordered it about 90% of the time, we were happy to see it still on the menu, that the three us ordered it. Place still looks the same, fairly clean, staffers were really nice, helpful and attentive. When our braised short rib plate came out, we were smiling ear to ear, the short ribs was huge, sitting in a pool of a red wine reduction sauce, garnished with sautéed broccoli & carrots, a tiny scoop of mash potato's and a side dish of white rice. (or pasta, your choice) The beef was extremely tender, the red wine sauce was superb, had a hint of tomato flavoring in it. A great dish to have and enjoy, the only downside is that it's pretty pricy at $28 dollars a pop, but worth every penny, be great to order on special occasions, anniversary's or on a date with a hot chick. Since we all ordered the same thing, the short rib plate is the only thing we can review, but this will give us a great reason to come back soon and try other dishes, or maybe order the short rib plate again, can't wait. Drove by this place several times but didn't go inside until today. Decided to check out for brunch; overall, it's an okay standard. Jordan was nice enough to hold the breakfast/brunch selections for us as we were in the way there. Since the temperature is triple digit, I decided on American style breakfast instead of the traditional Chinese porridge that I love. I was a little disappointed with bo lo bun because the outer bolo crust was not crunch or crusted texture and my drink was too sweet for my taste buds (maybe others lik'em overly condensed milk, but I'd rather they let me put in my own sweetness myself). What's up: Grabbing dinner with the family and this place was suggested. Parking: There is a pretty decent sized parking lot up front that is shared with the Embassy Billiards Club. We didn't have a problem getting a spot, however, the area was not very well lit and a bit on the dark side. Environment: Walking into the restaurant, we were greeted immediately and shown to our seats. Restrooms are located to the right after you enter the building. There's also an outdoor patio area towards the left of the building. What was ordered: Congee with Pork and Thousand Year Egg, Hai Nan Chicken Rice, Fu Chow Fried Rice, and a beef dish (forgot the name). If you spend $30, you can also get the $1 New York Steak Special. The Congee was decent and the Hai Nan Chicken was good. The Fu Chow Fried Rice was a bit too salty for my taste. Yay/Nay/Meh: Meh. The food was ok. I didn't find it very memorable. If you Check-In on Yelp, supposedly, you can get a "free" appetizer. However, when I showed it to the waitress, she gave a little bit of attitude and told us that a review had to be written first and only when you show it to her can we get the deal (which was not what was mentioned on the offer). That part was a bit disappointing; a review shouldn't be written before we get the dining full experience. I don't think I'll go out of my way to come back here anytime soon. [尋味LA]海南雞飯美味居 我這個佛教徒從沒去過普陀山，因為我想我去過新加坡，我在新加坡拜過觀音，那總算是南海觀音了吧？別和說吵什麼「正宗」的南海是指普陀山，「正宗」的觀世音菩薩還是個男的呢！心中有佛，哪裡都是道場，不是嗎？什麼哪兒的佛菩薩靈驗，哪一天的布施又比平時高多少多少倍的功德，這種人，不是在信佛，那是在和佛菩薩談生意，以後不要說自己是佛弟子。不過，你依然可以很牛的，你可以說「我生意做得很大的，我是和佛菩薩談生意的。」 誰說新加坡不是南海的？新加坡的雞飯就叫海南雞飯，不過據說是海南島傳過去的，隨便吧，馬來西亞的也叫海南雞飯，泰國菲律賓印度尼西亞都有海南雞飯，感覺與全國都有杭州小籠包是一樣的。 我不是個很喜歡海南雞飯的人，因為我不喜歡吃飯，我喜歡點上一桌子的菜，但我不喜歡吃飯，可是海南雞飯是個固定搭配，你吃雞的同時必須把飯也吃了。雖說不是太喜歡，我倒是吃過幾次好吃的。一次是在上海，全上海最好的海南雞飯在錦滄文華酒店，在倒閉前不久，推出了價格親民的「白領套餐」，周圍辦公樓里的人中午都去吃，好好的一家星級酒店被弄得象個食堂。有句說句，味道的確很子，雞肉香而不柴，蘸料恰到好處。 還有一次是在曼谷，半亱。上海是個再晚都能吃到正席的地方，曼谷是個再晚都有小吃的地方，我都喜歡。那次在曼谷怎麼會吃雞飯的呢？因為那些雞長得太可愛了。曼谷的雞飯檔是輛推車，推車上有塊案板，案板上有砧板有碗碟有調料，案板的另一邊有個木框玻璃罩，只面掛著一隻只的雞。那些可愛的雞喲，雪雪白白的圓球，胸脯高挺，看著就讓人想咬上一口；印度雞就很可憐，瘦而小，小得人們都不高興拔毛，乾脆連皮一起剝了。 寫完前面半篇，我出門吃了頓午飯，吃的是海南雞飯。洛杉磯有好多飯店賣海南雞飯，這也難怪，要是全國人民都移民到洛杉磯，那一定遍地都是杭州小籠包。 我去的那家，是一位網友推薦的，她倒沒有建議我去吃這家的海南雞 飯，她只是說這家店好吃。店在San Gabriel，我最不喜歡的地方，可是人家好吃的多，你沒辦法。 店叫Tasty Choice，中文店名「美味居」，我下午快二點到的時候，不但店中全都坐滿了，還有三四批十來個人在等。仔細一看，店分二部分，一半是室內的，全滿；還有一半在室外，有頂篷，幾乎沒人坐在外面。奇怪，居然有人寧可等位也不願意坐在外面吃，這幾天洛杉磯高溫過去了，只要有遮擋根本就不熱，我向服務員示意可以坐在外面，結果就直接坐在了外面。 等他拿來菜單，我說「我要海南雞飯，黑肉」，裝成老吃客的樣子；其實我沒來過，我只是在網上看到了菜單。服務員問我喝什麼，我說喝水好了，服務員說午餐送飲料的，咖啡、奶茶、汽水任選，半分鐘不到就被識破，不好玩。 服務員端了凍奶茶給我，又上了一小碗湯，奶茶很濃，但不夠甜，桌上也沒糖，啥都沒有，室內的座位可能有。湯是奶湯，裡面有三五個貝殼通心麵，有極細的胡蘿蔔碎和沒有融化的起司，挺不錯的，反正在雞飯上來前，我全喝完了。 雞飯端來，是一盆雞、一碟飯，這飯一看就舒服，的確是所謂的「油飯」。網上有很多洛杉磯海南雞飯的測評貼，甚至還有排名貼，然而光是照片上的那些飯就不對，那只是普通的白飯。海南雞飯要用肥雞來做，肥雞有很多雞油，不燉湯的話雞油根本沒用，所以用來燒飯，雞油不是簡單地熬一下就可以的，那樣的雞油腥；雞油要與蔥姜一起蒸透，再潷出雞油來，然後與生米一起煮飯，那樣的話才夠香。 蘸料是一疊二格，完全不辣的辣醬和油浸姜茸蔥花碎，後者除了洛杉磯的細蔥很粗之外，味道相當正；我很奇怪為什麼沒有醬油，好的海南雞飯的醬油也要蒸過，既去除「生氣」也更濃縮一點，或許室內的桌上也有醬油瓶吧？雞是另外一盤，我點的是「黑肉」，也就是平常我們說的「紅肉」，要加一美元，總共給了八塊雞背肉和一個雞翅中，還有半個滷蛋和醃蘿蔔絲，蘿蔔絲醃得很好，沒有絲毫辣味又夠爽脆。 雞肉斬得很好，是去骨後切的，也就是把整個「雞殼子」去掉後切的，這就要比很多連骨切的店要強很多了。連骨切也有二種，一種把內腔的血污都去除後再切，一種直接切，高下立見（現）。而去骨的切法，要「浪費」很多，因為不成塊的小肉也只能扔掉了，能用的其實並不多。這家的雞肉很好，皮與肉連著，肉嫩而不爛不碎，從雞翅的老嫩來看，火候正好，這種雞不怕老柴，因為本來就是嫩雞，本來的水份含量就多，最怕煮得水水爛爛的；只有「挺」得起來的雞，才敢去了骨上桌。 反正，很好，謝謝網友的推薦，那我再告訴大家一個秘密：把蔥姜碎從碟底舀出來拌在飯中一起吃，絶妙。 read more

Extensive menu with many Hong Kong style food options. Loved the pineapple bun and red bean shaved ice, brought me back to Hong Kong, as well as the imitation shark fin soup. The shark fin soup was disappointing, didn't taste very special. The pineapple bun was warm and crispy on top. My husband got the curry beef tongue which was very tender and the curry taste was spot on. My 2 kids shared the Hainan chicken noodle soup. Lots of noodle that I had to help finish for them. I would say its Sampan porridge is one of the best in San Gabriel area so far. They offer breakfast from Monday to Sunday and end at 11am. One day I ordered Sampan porridge after 11am. It took very long time to prepare it. The quality of the porridge was not as good as its breakfast porridge. My Sampan porridge was diluted. Today's my fried noodle of the breakfast was way too little. We also ordered steak for breakfast. The steak was good. A for service. C for execution. Me and my girl love coming here because they stay open late and the employees are always kind. But every time we ask for more protein than vegetables it gets frustrating when we still don't get it. We been here maybe like 10 times and after the first 4 we had to start asking for them to please not give more vegetables on a "Chicken dish" than chicken but every time we are let down.
