The good: I've been to this location a handful of times and it's definitely the top che (Vietnamese dessert pudding) place in the OC. They also have flan and delicious pastries like sugar coated bánh cam (sesame ball with mung bean inside). I also tried a green pandan sticky dessert that was soft, fresh and not too sweet (the ultimate Asian compliment). I've tried their white bean che, corn che, three color che, sương sa hạt luu & others and they were all above average. They also have a variety of sweet sticky rices. The bad: It doesn't have as big of a selection as their other location. There's often a wait out the door. There was a beggar inside standing close to customers and interrupting them as they were ordering to ask for money. We were visiting the area and my dad absolutely insisted that if were going to get Che, we have to go to this place. It was a little out of the way and there was a line, but it was worth it! It's a take out only space and very efficient. The ladies are very friendly, they will assist you as you go through the line, and there's no problem if you don't know the name of something, you can just point, or ask. It will be one person helping you/your group, so things don't get confused or lost. If you don't know what's there, you can walk in and look at what's available before committing to standing in line. This is one of those places where you are either familiar with Vietnamese desserts to know what to get or you need guidance from someone on what to get. I'm the latter. Besides the 4-5 drink pictures on the wall, there isn't a menu anywhere that describes the dessert or tell you what it's even called or let you know how much these items cost. Thankfully the line was a bit long so it bought me some time to text my friend for some suggestions before I was up to order. What ended up happening was I had to guess and point what I think my friend told me to get. I got pandan and coconut layered jello slices, mixed fruit cocktail (chè thái), sweet corn pudding (chè bắp), and banana tapioca pudding (chè chuối). - Jello slices tasted exactly you'd expect, pandan and coconut. -Fruit cocktail is good but not the best. I've had better elsewhere. -Sweet corn pudding was pretty good even though the idea of using corn in desserts sounds odd for the majority. It works because it's only a hint of the corn taste, and the corn's texture and overall sweetness rounds out the dessert. -The bananas in the banana tapioca pudding tasted sour and strange, but I'm not sure if that's how it's supposed to taste or I just got a bad batch. If you read other 3 or lower stars review you'll see that there are issues with the sanitation and food safety here. I unfortunately saw a sweet dumpling dessert displayed right at the front of the case and there was a long piece of hair coming out of it. It's gross for sure. I don't even know how the workers didn't catch that because it was really obvious. When I got home with my desserts I checked for hair, mold, maggots, etc. before I consumed it. Not too familiar with Vietamese food in general. I am of Chinese descent so I do see a lot of crossover of my culture's food with Vietamese foods and of what I have tried, I have really enjoyed and learned what to seek out and ask for in Little Saigon. For several years I have always observed long queues of folks waiting to be served here as I get out of my vehicle to visit my hairstylist who works in the hair salon in the same shopping center. Decided to try this place out since I was able to walk right in one Friday morning. The colorful and tasty looking selections were overwhelming at first. Unfortunately there is no descriptions in English, so I just decided to choose two items that looked familiar to me: the fried sesame balls (Jian Dui-Chinese) and what I thought was an oversized steamed pork bun (Char Siu Bao-Chinese). A dozen sesame balls @4/$1.00 = $4.00 One steamed bao @$3.00 Total = $7.00 CASH ONLY One of my favorite dim sum items growing up in the Bay Area and still to this day are the fried sesame balls. They are made with glutinous rice flour, filled with a sweetened bean paste, rolled in sesame seeds and deep fried. These have to be eaten within hours of being fried. I have tried several ways to store them but the end result is all the same: the glutinous rice flour does not hold up well and will harden up and become brittle and unappetizing to eat even the next day stored in an airtight container. When eaten fresh, a sesame ball made with glutinous rice flour is sweet, chewy and soft. The ones at Thach Che Hien Khanh are made with what tastes like regular AP flour. The dough itself is not sweetened with little chewiness to it. The filling is unsweetened and barely noticeable. The size of these sesame balls are a maybe the size of a ping pong ball. I ate the remaining ones Sunday night and while they became oilier (just like jian dui), they were still soft to eat, like when I first tried them on Friday morning. Would I buy them again? To scratch an itch/craving for Jian Dui, yes based on convenience and price only. There is another Vietamese business that sells their version of Chinese Dim Sum items that are much better and closer to what I am familiar with and enjoy but they are crazy busy and are not close by to where my hair stylist is located. As to the large steamed char siu bao, well I was really surprised when I got home. It wasn't what I thought it was. One of our sons wanted some so I cut it in half. I wasn't expecting to see what looks like either banh mi pate or meatball. stuffed inside. Well I really liked this one. the meat filling reminds me of the filling used in the Chinese Dim Sum item, Siu Mai with a small (guessing hardboiled quail egg). This item alone will keep me coming back for more to this place though it is bit pricy. I did observe that their food handling/safety is not quite up to health department standards. I did see, like other Yelp reviewers have previously mentioned, giant bowls of prepared food items stacked on the kitchen floor. Thạch Chè Hiển Khánh is a staple of my childhood during my weekend trips to Little Saigon spanning back to whenever I was sentient. Chè is perhaps one of the first Vietnamese words a child born in the US may learn; perhaps I am projecting. It was always my favorite thing to see the different chè behind the glass: all the different colors and visual textures made it seem like I was at the aquarium, witnessing the beauty of our world. Sometimes, it was a game of I Spy, when trying to see my perennial childhood favorite was there: chè khoai môn, affectionately dubbed by me as "chè green" on account of the sticky rice colored green (probably by pandan leaf extract). I always remembered waiting a long time in line at this place as a kid (though when you're a kid, any amount of time feels too long since you haven't been alive for relatively as long as, say, present-day me). Today was no different, unsurprisingly, as it New Year's Day, and Vietnamese folks are probably trying to feed their families and friends the good stuff. My family is no different. The line was so long, my aunt and I started playing separate games on our phones. I might have even opened up Yelp. This business's offerings range from chè, xôi, bánh bò-- basically anything you can do with glutinous rice. My aunt insisted I try so many things, and I only have so much real estate in my digestive tract. I opted for xôi sầu riêng (durian sticky rice), bánh bò (honeycomb cake), xôi mặn (savory sticky rice), chè đậu (bean chè), chè bắp (corn chè), chè chuối (banana chè), etc. I have just tasted the xôi sầu riêng with coconut milk and it was delightfully duriany. Always have line and only hear people talking in Vietnamese. Always makes me feel like I need to point with finger on what I want to buy since I don't even know how to pronounce most of the items sold here. I was first introduced to this place many years ago by my good old friend, who is Vietnamese. After eating delicious Pho at Pho79 (the best), we came here to try my first Chè Ba Màu. Awww hail che! (#1) Only in a place like Westminster could a place like this exist; Thach Che Hien Khanh is my go-to place for all things Che and I tend to stop here each time after a meal. If not for me, then as edible gifts for friends and relatives. For the uninitiated, Che is a Vietnamese dessert that consists of various fruits that range from jackfruits to lychee, typically mixed with an assortment of beans like kidney and mung beans, sitting in coconut milk or some kind of cream. It can come in the form of a drink (#2) but is typically served in some kind of a sweet soup. Occasionally there is a pudding version, but that is far less popular. I feel pretty confident that they have more variety than even most dedicated Vietnamese dessert spots. They have the sweet sticky rice, various flavors of che soup, and a colorful display of other pastries / wrapped tea leaf rice. I haven't tried everything in here, but what I have had has been pretty good. The lines can get intense during the weekend. The wait isn't crazy, but typically I've waited anywhere from 15min to 30 minutes.
