I've always thought this place had bad service but since I attended Webster U, I went semi regularly with friends due to convenience. After this past time there though, I will absolutely never return. The food is fair but the wait staff is so slow. They don't refill drinks often and they don't check on the table as often as they should. But beyond all of that, this place LOST my debit card. I paid for my meal and was never given back my card. When the waiter returned to my table, the only solution he had for me was to apologize and say, "this has never happened before." He didn't offer to pay for my meal or give me a coupon for next time. And there is no manager on duty. I am beyond upset with this restaurant. Their customer service is literally horrible and the fact that that server got a tip from me makes me want to punch a wall. And single diners are as welcomed as full tables. Patrons usually enjoy themselves here, running into neighbors, hailing expected friends, young & old families grabbing a quick bite & the serving staff joking with them while keeping their coffee cups full, serving orders rapidly & clearing off tables in record time. The decor may resemble your Aunt Martha's circa 1960's kitchen but it's smoke free indoors, has booths (always in demand) & even a couple pub-style tables at the front floor-to-ceiling windows. They have all the staples here. Plus smiles, decent coffee & brisk service even in their busiest rushes. I am going to have to bump them up to a 4 star since they are a consistent quick breakfast and brunch favorite for us as well as our out of town guests. You will get good food, huge portions, and quick service with a small price tag here at Boardwalk Café. They are also always accommodating when we bring in a large group of 6-8 out of town house guests on a Sunday morning. The variety of skillets and omelets always hit the spot and the classic favorites such as biscuits and gravy and French toast never disappoint. I haven't been to this cafe in a year or so and stopped in for lunch today. Friendly and attentive server, good price for a gyro sandwich and fries, but the positives end here. I first noticed the syrup and other food on my laminated placemat of a menu and asked for a clean one. The next wasn't much cleaner. As I waited for my order and took a look around, I was astounded at how dirty this restaurant is. The last time I was here it was much cleaner. The windows have a greasy film, the floor looks and feels like it hasn't been mopped in weeks, and everything on the tabletop from napkin holder to condiments had food residue, sticky syrup, and just needed a good cleaning. It's really too bad. Nice people running the place and a great location. I won't eat here again unless they clean up this establishment. read more

I had high expectations for this place. Based on reviews as well as verbal feedback. The place was packed! It had about a 20 minute wait time. I came for the pancakes since the reviews and people's comments say that they are the best in town. We were finally seated and promptly served by a very friendly waitress. She took her order and brought our drinks right away. For being as crowded as they were they really have the ordering process down extremely well! She brought my chocolate milk and it tasted like it was from a bottle versus a syrup mix. I was very happy with it. The food came next. I ordered 2 pancakes and one piece of French toast. The butter and Mrs. Butterworth syrup were already on the table. Our order came and it looked very appetizing. Upon cutting into the pancake I realized it was a bit spongy. And after eating a bite I also realized that they were not the best pancakes (for me) in town. I like my pancakes soft on the inside but not spongy with a little bit of a crispy edge on the outside and grill to a golden brown. These were light pancakes. Not golden brown. And with the spongy texture They just didn't hit home for me. My buddy ordered the hungry man breakfast. It came with a side of biscuit and gravy, hash browns and bacon. He substituted two eggs with extra bacon. Hashbrowns looked wonderful but he said they were not well done enough for him. They were underdone in the middle and overdone on the outside. The biscuit and gravy order looked small. And I didn't see much sausage in the gravy. Just plain white gravy over a biscuit. He did have to add a lot of pepper to make it more flavorful. With my review being as it is. I still would like to go back and try something for lunch. They have a decent menu and I would like to try it again! read more

The food here is your typical greasy spoon type fare. However, its one of my favorite non-buffet style breakfast places close to me. The food is indeed delicious. Haven't had anything burned or tasting poorly. French toast, pancakes, scrambled eggs. Traditional breakfast fare, but worth a nice little sidewalk breakfast experience. Service is extremely quick. Don't plan to wait long for your food, but do plan for there to be somebody waiting behind you to snatch your outdoor table the second you finish your food and pay. read more

I liked the hometown feel. They look like a major employer of teenagers in town. I liked the casualness, and I liked our waitress. I really liked the spinach-tomato-feta omelet, but the omelet was served with hash browns that must have come out of the frozen food section of Schnucks. The sign on the front says "The Best Breakfast in Town"...I guess if you were judging along with truck stop diners across the US, they might have a chance at the title. Don't get me wrong...I'm not saying the place is bad, but I'm just stating the obvious fact that they do an average job at breakfast. It's a nice neighborhood breakfast joint. The service is better than the food and I would definitely go out on a limb and say that is probably one of the main reasons people keep coming back. I've only ordered their corned beef hash, of which I can totally do better at home, but if I'm not in the mood and don't want to drive too far out of the way, this is where I go. My 3 year old has had their french toast, of which he whispered to me, "Mommy, I like yours better, but this is okay" He also said the he liked our waitress "She's really nice Mommy" Even the toddler recognizes the greatness of the service and mediocrity of the food.... This is the type of place I would never normally go. It's a no-name place, no one I know had recommended it, and I hadn't ever checked it out on Yelp, so it didn't meet my criteria. However, my husband LOVES breakfast food and we were in the neighborhood and hungry, so we walked in. The service here was great. Fast and friendly. The food was good, too. I loved the hash browns. LOVED. But my only complaint is that unlike First Watch and others like it, this place has absolutely no healthy options on the menu. So if you go, be prepared for some grease no matter what. read more

Let me start by saying that I have been the biggest fan of The Boardwalk for years. I haven't been in for a couple of months....and today when I went in the place was so disgustingly dirty I'm not sure if I can go back. I sat down and placed a to go order, and one of the waitresses was stocking jelly pods and the container was almost oozing gross off of it. I feel like I may have "over rated" some breakfast locations in STL before this, but I'm coming to find a solid breakfast location is not easy to find here. The boardwalk cafe however, hits the spot. I had a delicious skillet plate full of all kinds of meaty, cheesy, veggie, eggy goodness. Good diner coffee in a mug (and bottomless of course). OJ was delicious and the toast was done just right. Breakfast for 2 for about $20. Boardwalk cafe - you hit all my touch points. Your service was fast, your wait staff was helpful, you're location is prime AND I didn't have to wait an hour for a table (so key). This place outdoes all of the other breakfast places in the area, and definitely better than the stratton cafe across the street. Outdoor seating was fantastic. Delicious breakfast. Against my better judgment, I agree to go here again. I knew that it would be a mistake; I was right. This restaurant has a dirty feel to it, like the place needs a serious industrial cleaning, not just the daily cleaning that the workers are supposed to do when the restaurant closes and before it opens. The décor is still haphazard looking and like it's just been thrown together without any real thought to it. The food was terrible; it didn't resemble my idea of garbage, but the food was definitely crappy. I don't know how someone could like this place for it's food. I'll Never understand why places skimp on potatoes when everyone knows they cost next to nothing also didn't finish these in butter and not great flavor. Eggs ordered over medium came out brown and hard on the outside and pancakes were okay. Highs were real butter on the table and real half and half, reasonable prices and friendly and attentive waitress. Burgers are delish, but I tend to get the Grilled Cheese or the Buffalo Chicken Wrap. The staff is awesome, especially Victoria. If you want healthy go to "First Watch", if you want exceptional feel good food come here, as you won't be disappointed. Outdoor seating is a bonus, but not available in the winter months. One sad note is that the waffle fries come out rather too crispy, but with several fry options (steak cut, regular, slim, etc) one can find a happy medium. Oh....it's cheap!! read more

For as many times as I have driven by this joint, it has never caught my attention or called to me in any way. I figured it was frequented by the elderly from the old folks home across the street who come to play bridge and drink bottomless cups of coffee. Fortunately what I found instead was a pretty solid greasy spoon serving up healthy portions for breakfast and lunch. St. Louis is truly lacking when it comes to breakfast eateries, so I was thrilled to find a new option for Saturday and Sunday mornings. The staff here is very friendly, the portions are HUGE, and the food is really good and CHEAP. I definitely recommend the skillets and the blueberry pancakes from the breakfast menu. I haven't tried their lunch yet, but saw that they're only charging about $5-$6 for a 1/2 pound burger, so I will definitely be trying one of those on my next visit. Life is a comprimise! Boardwalk cafe in Webster Groves is like an upscale Spencer's Grill in Kirkwood. I refuse to go to Spencer's but I think with Boardwalk Cafe we have found a solution. I would not normally use the word upscale in a description of Boardwalk Cafe in a review but if you know Spencer's.... Big Ol' portions of skillet selections. I had the Arch Skillet (home fries which are really hash browns, 2 sausage patties, with a mixture of onion, tomato, jalepeno's, and melted cheese with 2 eggs on top served with toast $6.75. It is RARE that I leave food on my plate ( must be the way I was brought up :( ) but I could not finish and left about a 1/3. My husband had the Country Skillet ( biscuits and gravy, sausage patties with eggs on top. $6.25. He finished and gave a thumbs up and would return. When you manage to get seated at this restaurant, the food is okay. My pancakes were fine. My husband's eggs were eggs. But here's the thing. EVERY SINGLE TIME we drive to this place, we end up having to go elsewhere because there is a line out the door and people waiting around all over the place. And if this was earth shattering breakfast food, maybe I could understand that. But it's not! Also, when you do get seated, it feels like everyone else in the restaurant (or even patio) is on top of you and screaming in your ear. I've always wanted to try this place, but because it closed early, I never could. I was walking to Subway just a few doors down when I saw the chalkboard sign list gyro sandwich and some other items as the special. I am a gyro fiend! I love a good gyro any day and love trying new places. Saw that the Open sign was on so I walked in. Finally! I get to try this place. I walked in and asked the waiter if I could order to-go; he said of course, very nice and friendly staff. I wanted to try the gyro, but when I looked at the menu, I couldn't decide between gyro and fried tilapia. I asked him for his recommendation and ended up going for the fish. As for sides, I asked if he could do half fries and half garden salad. Most restaurants are sticklers about picking one side, but he was accommodating with my specific wishes. The fish was great, but might've been a little soggy because it was in a container. Good portions for the price. Good hash browns. Respectable eggs. Avoid the pancakes, which taste suspiciously mix-ish. The syrup is Aunt Jemima. The coffee is meh. Absolutely nothing - so far as I can tell - is organic or particularly fresh. But, hey, sometimes it's fun to take a trip back to 1995 - before we all went crazy for local this and that, kale omelets, and arugula waffles. Nice diner atmosphere. Good prices. Maybe I'm hard to please because I grew up with "mountain cooking" in the Appalachians or something. This was mediocre and doesn't live up to all these rave reviews. It was bad, but it's not amazing. It's just normal food. I had the French toast. It was small and no fluff. Minimal powder sugar and the syrup appeared to be watered down and ran out like water. French toast should be thick and make you feel awful after eating it. Syrup should be thicker than motor oil. read more

A friend and I went and loved this place! The portions were huge and we couldn't finish our meals. We ended up taking most of it home. The prices were awesome for the large portions we got. We each got a skillet. I got the Denver skillet and though it was very good. We went on a Sunday around 10:30 am and we had about 15-20 minute wait but we didn't mind. I like trying new places and I recommend Boardwalk Cafe. We sat outside and it was very nice. I didn't give this place a 5 because I had to remind the service twice that I had ordered a soda. I went here for breakfast and it was amazing! I had a skillet and my friends had the omelettes. Both were delicious and full of flavor. The portion sizes were good as well, as most places will just serve you a small omelette with a slice of bread. They brought us out a whole basket of bread. The service was incredible as well, all the staff were very friendly and attentive and helped each other out. Today, my boyfriend and I wanted our usual breakfast fix and we normally come here when we need it. I don't know if it's how we looked(we're in our mid-20's), dressed, or what, but our server Andrea was extremely curt when taking our order and ignored us the whole meal. We had to ask another server for coffee and not once were we asked if our food was okay. She had a couple other tables(an older gentleman and an older couple) and seemed to interact normally with them, asking if they were good, and making small jokes, and dropped the check off with a smile. I am a server and understand when another server is busy, but she was sitting at another table in the back rolling silverware and joking with another coworker. I felt extremely disrespected as a customer. I can tolerate a certain level of bad service, but this was bad enough for me to right a review. The reason I'm giving this place 4 stars is because we love coming here! We have been here lots of times have always had great meals and great service, so this was really disappointing visit to us. read more

Had breakfast here this morning and it wasn't bad but the biscuits and gravy are not made from scratch like the menu says.

We've been here twice now; the food was consistent both times...pretty standard diner-type fare. This is clearly a high turnover place, not a place you can sit and drink coffee and chat, because the waiting area is literally right on top of where the seats are...so people waiting are staring at you waiting for you to finish so they can sit. Service last time was much better than this time. Neither time was exceptional, but today our waitress left our food in the window for at least 10 minutes. We were pretty disappointed. The place is small and it seemed to stay packed with many regulars. Maybe that's part of the charm of this place, but it's definitely not the best breakfast in town. This place.... We were looking for some good breakfast on a Sunday so we tried Boardwalk Cafe. It was a bit far from our house but we had heard good things. Anyway, as soon as we walked in the door, we were ignored. I couldn't figure out if it was seat yourself. But after one server passed us cussing and slamming things about three times, we decided to seat ourselves. Luckily our server was NOT this server who continued to yell and throw a fit the ENTIRE time we were there. Our server was nice enough. He got our order pretty quick. We didnt really see him again until it was time to pay. Our food came and my food was half cold. Like not edible cold. As someone who worked in the service industry throughout college, I HATE sending food back. But I really didn't want ice cold biscuits and gravy, so I kindly asked them to microwave it. The kitchen and servers made a HUGE deal. I mean you can SEE them right there. A busser or hostess came back and told me that the kitchen was making me a brand new plate instead of microwaving so it would take a few minutes. So I waited. And then she brought back my old plate, microwaved, and turned around from where I took a bite. I mean that's fine, but don't tell me I'm waiting 10 minutes for my plate to be microwaved. In addition to all of this, my boyfriend's hash browns in his skillet were all white, watery, and cold... Being from Webster as a kid and wanting to check the place out, I was highly dissapointed. read more

If you're into diner grub, you can't beat the price you will find here. My friends and I had a couple of minor issues with the food quality, but overall were quite satisfied with our meals. If you are going to have hash browns or fries, be sure to ask for them crispy or they will come out soggy. That said, the Philly cheesesteak is really very good and their breakfasts have solid portions and all agreed were well made. Our waiter was nice and attentive, but I had a lot of trouble hearing him and he was standing next to me. Also, I was annoyed that he kept reaching in front of, and over me for drink refills and dish clearing while I was still eating, even though there was plenty of room to walk around our table. I shouldn't have to stop for the waiter to do something for someone else. Sitting on the patio/sidewalk is pleasant enough, but good luck finding a parking spot anywhere nearby! read more

We decided to try Boardwalk in big part due to their dog friendly patio and good reviews. Dan and I decided to walk from our home in Maplewood to Webster to try this diner. We got exercise and a great meal! Upon arriving, we immediately noticed how busy it was and put our name in right away for the outdoor patio. Boardwalk is not a big establishment inside or out so we prepared ourselves for a little bit of wait. We were told a five minute wait which ended up being 30 but we were not in a big hurry and did not mind waiting. Once seated, our waitress immediately took our drink order and brought a bowl of water for our dogs and interacted with them. She was very sweet to both our babies! It was a beautiful morning which made sitting on their patio even more enticing. Omelets were on my brain, so I ordered the Mushroom and Swiss Omelet. Not being a potato eater, our waitress let me get extra toast instead of hash browns. Dan did usual 2 Farm Fresh eggs with hash browns, bacon, and toast. Both of us ordered coffees as our drink and got to sip and enjoy while we waited for our dishes. It was very busy but our food arrived relatively quickly. I absolutely adored my omelet and did not want to share but did give Dan a taste (he was impressed as well). He, of course, loved his usual and the bacon was very crisp and flavorful. Our waitress (being the only one serving the whole patio) was attentive and friendly. One of my favorite things was the bill! ;) We left feeling not only very satisfied but also happy with our purchase. The prices are incredibly reasonable. The only odd thing we saw was that they dumped the leftover water glasses on the bushes. I am all about returning things to the earth but it was a little weird when it happens right next to customers. That day I talked to several people and recommended each of them to check this place out. If you are looking for a great breakfast place, this should definitely be on the list. read more

This restaurant is, of course, non-smoking. It's also in walking distance from my house and a very solid establishment. Menu is diverse - from burgers and chicken sandwiches to pasta dishes and steaks. Good solid food without a chain feel. And the chocolate cake. Mmmm. hln read more
