Looking for a place that *really* has hot chicken? This is it, finally. Right now I think it's the best hot chicken in town. Honestly, I feel like it's the first serious hot chicken place to open. Cookshack makes the other few pretenders in the area look like wannabe's. I know it's the best hot chicken I've had. I like they got a little bar top in the place with 5-6 seats at. Serve beers and margy's that I could tell, don't know about wine. Been a couple times, got chicken sand, Texas Hot, with dragon fries first visit. There is one notch above Texas Hot, it's called AMF, and yes, *that* AMF. I figured it wouldn't be very hot, but I didn't want to chance it on first visit. I was wrong. I expected red seasoned fries to come out, but they looked like regular fries, and the chicken sand wasn't *dark* like a lot of them are when places use a butt load of spicy oil trying to increase the heat. I was disappointed at first look, but at first bite things changed for the better. The fries were hot, spicy hot, and really good. The chicken sandwich had a pretty spicy hot level to it as well. It bordered some on "lingering madness" heat that I don't enjoy, but didn't cross the line. Heat stayed a short bit, but not at a level I would avoid in the future. Both were pretty great tasting, cooked pretty perfect, great stuff. Second visit went for the ribs and tenders. Went back to the Texas Hot level. Got the mac n cheese for a side. They sauce and season the ribs, which, let me say now, these aren't your high end craft ribs, and for the price, I hope no one expects it, cause that wouldn't be fair. The ribs are good, tender, smoked. Only negative is they don't remove the membrane, and with the way they prepare them, it's a problem I had to deal with. The sauce is good, and the only thing I noticed was the Texas Hot level lingered a little longer, but might have something to do with the amount of seasoning on a half rack. The tenders were really good. Big tenders, juicy, wonderful. The mac n cheese was good too, nothing mind bending, but good. The shack sauce for the tenders was, well yea, pretty much like Cane sauce, but there are other dipping sauce options. Anyway, both times I sat at the little bar, had a couple beers, and enjoyed myself. Couple TV's at the bar. The bartenders could be more attentive, but I think that's just a sign of the times now. Service at the bar was still okay. The chicken sand and fries was about $10 or so, I think. The half rack ribs and two tenders with side was $16, a deal, cause it can easily feed two. Draft craft beers are $6 and that's not to bad. I think prices are pretty reasonable. The chicken is great, the ribs are good. I intend to get both on future visits. I will probably go a heat level down to medium and check it out, and at some point will probably get one chicken tender at AMF, to see how brain numbing hot it is. Gotta try that ice cream sandwich sometime. read more

After driving up from Austin we were nice and hungry, and this was an excellent choice for a first stop. I'm always trying chicken and waffles to see if I'll ever get the hype, and I finally do. The waffles were fluffy with a slight crisp, and that cinnamon butter, baby? I could take a pound of that back home. The hot chicken didn't overwhelm the flavors from the waffles- everything was perfectly balanced. The chicken was crunchy but tender and juicy. My husband liked my hot chicken better, so since it's our anniversary I sacrificed one to him. His fries were really good, but the salad was a perfect palate cleanser for me. And we love a crunchy bright salad, so kudos for skipping the iceberg. Also not to be forgotten the Arnold Palmer. It was refreshing and delicious. So good I forgot to take the damn picture. Let me describe what I had I got the three piece tender mild style with Mac n cheese. All tenders come served on a big ol slice of Texas toast it's not toasted but it is soft and perfect. The chicken was delicious I thought it was going to be over seasoned salty taste but not only was it cooked to perfection but the spices were blended perfectly and gave the chicken a great flavor. Not the Mac and cheese needed work is wasn't bad but I like my Mac an cheese the way another popular chicken establishment prepared it but maybe that's just personal preference. Let's just say I won't get it next time I visit. I did love my wife's sweet potato fries I would recommend getting those instead. A nice little surprise on North University. It's much better than Cane's since the flavor is in the chicken, not the dipping sauce. They have regular chicken strips, sandwiches, and salads. I encourage you to ask for the fried chicken on the salads as the grilled chicken doesn't have much flavor. Orders came out quickly and staff were friendly. Prices were reasonable given the proximity to West 7th area. Parking could be an issue when they are busy. The parking lot is tight, but you might find street parking. I'll go again. I'm the type of person to talk trash about what restaurants deem "spicy", but boy did this spot put me in my place! I got the rack(medium) and tenders(Texas hot), and my wife got the (medium) sandwich. Chicken: Beautifully cooked, very moist with a great fried coating. You can see the spices and had me sweating! Very hot! The ribs: fall off the bone tender and very tasty. If you want to avoid the mess, you can literally eat them with a fork. Medium doesn't really have that much spice to it. The only advice I have is to make the medium level spicier. I didn't really notice the spice at medium but the Texas hot kicked my ass(in good way). The jump is too severe. Great place! I just visited The Cookshack for the 1st time. Everything was great! The service was one of my favorite parts of the experience. Everyone was so helpful and accommodating. We were visited regularly throughout our meal to make sure all was well. They even refilled our beverages for us. Lastly, they made sure to keep our table clean by picking up items as we finished them. Now on to the food...I got the chicken and waffles. It was absolutely delicious! The waffles were so light and fluffy. The chicken tenders were perfectly seasoned and spiced to my liking. I chose fries for my side. They were yummy as well. This is the way I would prefer to have my chicken strips, anytime I have a craving. The chicken is crispy with a very nice seasoning on the crust and the meat is nice and moist. We chose to get the sweet heat and Shack sauce to compliment the chicken. The sides of mac and cheese and a kale salad and they did a great job of cutting the heat. We only had medium heat and it hit the spot. The customer service at the time that we ate (around 3pm on Friday) was excellent. The setting of this restaurant fantastic. It may appear like a fast food restaurant on the outside but on the inside the decore matches very well with the style of food that they are serving. Place is not bad. Fairly busy on a Thursday evening. Small parking lot, however you might be able to inconveniently circle around and find parking along the side streets. I ordered myself a chicken sandwich on this recent visit and they gave me a number and I stood to the side and waited for my order. It took about 5 minutes to get the food in hand and I was on my way. On to the food, when opening the to-go box, there was a pool of grease on the chicken patty lol. Well that's not going to stop me from eating this fried goodness. The batter and seasoning was done well. Though I was a little shocked it was just a chicken on a bun with not really anything on it. They have the coleslaw and pickles on the side. Overall the sandwich was not bad. The bun almost had a Hawaiian roll taste to it but not super sweet. The mac and cheese was good. I wish I'd taken pictures, but I was hungry. We came in for lunch after a morning at the kimball museum and the cookshack didn't disappoint. Our group ordered strips, chicken and waffles, and chicken sandwiches and everyone was pleased. I ordered medium strips with Mac and cheese with some Buffalo sauce drizzled on top. It was delish. Mike was walking around and making sure guests were feeling welcome and satisfied. He spent time with us and allowed me to try the AMF heat level challenge. It was really cool to feel the dramatic jump in heat between this seasoning and the others. He took great care of us and we are eager to head back next time we're in the area. I am so impressed by the food here! We got the half ribs + 2 tenders, with the side of the dragon fries & shack sauce. The rib sauce was delicious and the meat was very tender. Honestly probably one of the best ribs I've ever had! And I'm not easily impressed by most meats. So huge kudos to you, Cookshack! The tenders are also so fresh tasting, thick, and juicy. I chose medium spicy for everything and it was a nice kick, not too overwhelming. The dragon fries are just regular fries but fried in spicy oil! That's kind of how everything is cooked. It's not necessarily a hot sauce or hot rub. It's the oil that gives it the spice. The shack sauce is very similar to Raising Canes sauce, I'd highly recommend. The staff was really sweet, especially the owner. But they were so clingy. Someone came to our table every 5 minutes or so. So I felt like our conversations kept getting awkwardly cut off repeatedly. A glass of milk, 2 bottles of water, & 30 minutes later I'm able to sit down and write a review. Everything was fantastic, super juicy chicken, macaroni like I've never had before, & the salad was super fresh and tasty. But what I couldn't handle was that HEAT.... I thought I loved hot food until I tried their two HOTTEST flavor. Ok! This was really good. I was pleasantly impressed. I opted for medium heat and it was spicy enough to make my lips tingle, but not to the point where I couldn't taste the flavors of the ribs and tenders. Which, by the way, the bone just slipped out from the meat of the ribs and the tenders were juicy! I had mac & cheese as a side, and this was one of the best mac & cheese side I've had thus far. I'm not sure if Steve is the owner or manager or just works here, but he was awesome, along with the servers. Really liked this restaurant, food was amazing. The chicken tenders are definitely made with a homemade batter also loved the black pepper inside of it. Also the ribs were cooked to perfection fall off the bone. Both of these I got the regular with no sauce can't take too much spicy stuff. Also I got to try Texas caviar really good edition to the menu I thought. The sweet potato fries were another good edition. They were the perfect combination of sweet and salty. New and spacious place! We got their ribs + chicken tenders combo for the awesome deal. Chicken was moist, perfect balance of crunch and spice. Ribs were tender, great sauce! And their dragon fries consist of different oils to get a lot of flavor. Think McDonald's fries with spice. Really good! They try to cater to you by asking if everything is ok, drink refills, etc. But it's really awkward and too frequent. I wish they didn't do that so often! Overall I'd get it again.
