My brother and I swung by after work to meet with a friend and have dinner here today and here are a few points I really like about this place: - Store interior is very spacious, clean, and organized. - Food must be ordered on the kiosk, with pagers available to let you know that your food is ready. I don't mind this because it gives me more time to think my order through and I'm not holding up the line since it was my first time. - Lots of drink options with fountain sodas. - Menu is straight forward and super easy to navigate on the touch screens. - Employees are super chill and very helpful. - The chicken sandwich was super juicy and crispy. This location just opened in Rivermark and the last time I had The Melt was maybe four or five years ago in the Stanford shopping mall and the first time I heard of this chain was over ten years ago when it opened in Berkeley. When it opened, I only thought of The Melt as a place that sold overpriced grilled cheese sandwiches. The menu has expanded since and now includes tasty burgers, fried chicken sandwiches, all types of fries and of course the classics including different takes on a classic grilled cheese and Mac and cheese. We ordered the classic fried chicken sando and a classic burger. The fountain soda flavors are unique not just your cokes and diet cokes. Also ordered a side of regular seasoned fries. All very tasty. You can order on a screen. Pick up drinks at the counter. The people we interacted with were all very friendly. The food was ready quickly. Four stars just because the texture of my chicken made me think the thicker parts of the chicken were undercooked. It didn't look pink but I didn't want to risk it; otherwise, super crispy breading and seasoned well. I should know not to order chicken from a burger and grilled cheese place. We ordered our food to go but it looks like a nice spot to sit down and eat. There's plenty of outdoor seating and some of the indoor tables open up to a big opening outside. FOOD I'm a huge fan of patty melts when I want to overindulge, so I went for a patty melt. I also heard good things about their garlic fries, so I also got those as well. Patty melt is pretty good. Good meat to cheese ratio and a very crispy exterior. It's a bit greasy, but any good patty melt will be greasy. Nothing to complain about; it's a pretty solid sandwich. The garlic fries were also very delicious. They go pretty hard on the garlic, so make sure you have a mint after you finish eating if you have to go back to work because that will linger. Nice portion size and a good amount of Parmesan on the fries. I'd get this again. I didn't get a soda, but they have their own unique brand of sodas here. I will definitely try their soda on my next visit. SERVICE Order at the counter. They will give you a buzzer and will buzz you once your food is ready. Surprisingly, the highlight of my visit was the service. It was their opening weekend, but the manager and employees went out of their way to explain the menu and also checked up on customers all around the restaurant. Not sure how long this will hold, but while I was there, I felt very welcome. COST For the melt and the fries, it was just short of $20. Pretty reasonable given the portion sizes and the quality of the food. SETTING Both indoor and outdoor seating are available. The outdoor seating is still under a roof, so you will be protected from the rain while still enjoying the outdoor breeze. Great place to hang out with friends. Located in Rivermark Plaza, this area gets very busy on weekday lunches. Parking may be a bit different, but there are parking lots by the Safeway and adjacent to the Melt. My advice is to arrive before noon if you want to avoid the lunch rush! Overall, I was very impressed with the service.
