I eat here frequently and they have the best sushi rolls in town in my opinion. I love the Hawaiian Roll and the Volcano Roll. They do take out too! Their teppan dinner is also enjoyable and fun if you have a big group of people. The seafood is my favorite. The steak tastes dry to me. I wanted to like this place. Japanese cuisine is one of my favorites and the place had a nice atmosphere. Ate here for a friend's birthday with a fairly large group (around 11 people). We sat around the grill because we reserved the table for 15 people and their regular tables don't seem to fit that many. We all order and about 6 of us order rolls and the rest of us order tepan because we want to see the chef cook in front of us. The waitress says we must move to the regular tables because there is a minimum of 8 people who have to order tepan because the chef refuses to cook for any less. The prices are quite steep which is why a lot of us ordered rolls. The waitress also said that they don't do individual checks and there must be a minimum of 2 people per check. I've never heard of a restaurant that does that. Our party of people didn't all know each other so it was odd sharing a check as some of us didn't have cash and were planning on paying with cards. So fine we move and the table just about barely fits all of us. The shrimp tepan was okay definitely not worth the price. The rolls were fresh and tasty though. The tepan comes with edamame and miso soup and a very small salad which is how I assume they attempt to get a away with the price though there are plenty of sushi places that give complimentary miso and edamame. One of our people came late and so she ordered a dragon ball and the waitress brought back dragon rolls, so our party member said she asked for the dragon ball not the dragon roll and the waitress told her that she asked her twice if that's what she really wanted implying that it was our friends fault. Even if it was, a waitress should be accommodating not try and be right. It was rude we didn't particularly enjoy our visit. Pricey and the service was bad. They also automatically charged us 15%+ gratuity. read more

Leanna, you are not alone. This was my favorite Japanese restaurant in town also until I encountered the roach problem...two visits in a row. They were coming out of the railing along the main isle. Since I was alone, along the isle is where the two seat tables were. I killed a couple and even trapped a live one under a plate. The really sad part was that the establishment didn't even blink a eye at it. After the first time I expected the problem to be taken care of. After the second time... well, there will be no after the second time. Got to admit though, the food was very good there and aside from the reaction to, or lack of, the roaches, the waitresses were very nice... actually one of the reasons I went there. I love everything about Tokyo Garden. Even the older grouchy lady server charms me. The teppanyaki chefs are talented and entertaining! The teppanyaki steaks are fairly thin so adjust your doneness request accordingly. I prefer sushi over the rolls but even I can't deny the yellow submarine (without the mayo sauce) is tasty. Try the J-pop-- a jalapeño stuffed with spicy tuna and covered in a peanut sauce. read more

We actually really like this restaurant, but its not one of the best sushi I've had in Bakersfield. The atmosphere is aimed more at adults, instead of family. Though the kids would love the Teppanyaki grills. Their cooks do make it entertaining. Big downside for this restaurant though is that it only opens at 5pm and closed Sunday. Went here to celebrate several birthdays, including mine, and an anniversary in my boyfriends family. Food was definitely delicious, especially the steak. Even though I had the vegetarian meal, I snuck some of my boyfriends steak and it was the best. I, however, wish you could decline the soup and salad with the meal. It was good, but I personally don't need ll that food. I also wish you could just get fried rice instead of a meal... if this an option I didn't see it. The show with dinner was cool. Our group of five came here for a weekend teppanyaki meal early Friday night. The meal: our chef (Ray) was pretty good and quite entertaining! miso soup was very good. Salads that come with the meal were okay. Fried rice (included, served to everyone) was VERY BASIC and a bit greasy with no shrimp. Just egg, teriyaki sauce, and OIL. We had steak and scallops, steak and chicken, steak and shrimp and steak and lobster. Steaks were okay. nothing great, but good fillets & strips properly cooked to order. Shrimp & chicken were good, scallops ok, lobster overcooked, dry & lacking in flavor. Shame, shame! Vegetables - the standard bean sprouts, mushroom, carrot and zucchini combo that comes with Teppan-Yaki places, were good & the sauces were very good. The bad: 1. No dessert included in the meal and none offered to us by our waitress. Odd. We were summarily given the bill which we paid. 2. cleanliness. As we were seated we noticed a sticky residue on the table and asked for a hot towel to wipe it up. Although a hostess did promptly wipe it she did not get all of it. I noticed the baseboards on the floor also were dirty and that the floor was not the cleanest. This was the early part of the evening and this restaurant should've been spotless! Cleanliness is next to godliness in the restaurant business and a prerequisite for dining. God only knows what's going on in the kitchen! We won't be back until they clean up their act!disappointing. read more

Just finished a meal with friends. Last minute option, and they accommodated but only after asking twice, then surprise, our teppan table was short by 4, so why the hesitation to book the 4 persons. Anyhow, I went for the Lobster, and Meh. It was cooked well, like to the edge of edible, and it wasn't the sweet lobster. Disappointing. The gyosa & tempura were overcooked, unfortunate. They kept asking my husband to buy more beer. Is that where the money is? Overall, acceptable, but honestly the Miyosh at the Marketplace, is way better. read more

Went there on Friday for a birthday dinner. I should have known right when I walked in and the place was nearly empty on a Friday night that it wasn't a very good choice. The fried rice (if you can call it that) was as bland as steamed rice just maybe a little more salty. The filet, salad and soup were the only saving graces. My biggest complaint along with the fried rice (again, if you can call it that) is that they use chicken thighs. Really? You're going to charge me $25 a plate and give me dark meat??? Gross. How about don't worry about saving yourself money by cutting corners and actually present a quality product. Seriously won't be going back. Chef James was really nice though. My husband and I celebrated our anniversary dinner here. I ordered the shrimp and chicken. The shrimp was good and the chicken was just average. My husband ordered the teriyaki steak which had minimal flavor. The service was excellent and watching your meal cooking was alot of fun. Always good food at Tokyo Garden. We did the teppanyaki since my boyfriend had never been before. Scallops for me, new york steak and shrimp for him. The scallops were really tender, perfectly cooked and dang near melted when they reached my tongue. Steak and shrimp was flavorful, done just right. Love love love this place! I've been coming here for 7+ years and it continues to stay my favorite restaurant. The atmosphere is beautiful and the staff is always really friendly. They open from 11-2 and reopen for dinner at 5 ( closed on mondays). I love the entertainment when they cook in front of you and their cheesy jokes to go along with it.
