Caldo de Res The takeout container is certainly packed with enough beef protein, but it's not just the tender portions - there's a lot of tendons and cartilage to fight through. In addition, the accompaniments are pretty limited - only potatoes and the chayote green squash and oh wait, there was one slice of carrot at the bottom. There is an unmistakable sour/tart character to the broth that undoubtedly comes from the Chayote, but probably needs to be balanced with another acid-neutral ingredient such as (more) carrots or even corn, or more potatoes. The most striking feature, unfortunately, is the very oily nature of the broth and that kind of takes away from the dish which in all fairness is cooked quite well. I would definitely make the assertion that the Caldo de Res is a full two steps below the same from Lopez Taqueria. Hardshell taco I selected chicken as my protein. But they combined it in a container with the soft fish taco that I ordered so by the time I receive the food, the hard shell was no longer hard or crispy. I guess I should have expected that with any to go order, I imagine it is a challenge to keep anything crispy if it is delivered under wraps. It seems like the chicken is flame broiled because it has that certain tart-burnt characteristic to it, very similar to tandoori chicken but not as spicy. They give you loads of cheese, lettuce, pico de gallo, and dressing two types of dressing to decorate the taco with. Fish taco The fish meat is breaded but comes in pretty sizable chunks and so much that it overflows the capacity of the medium sized soft flour tortilla. The breading was probably a little bit on the soggy side and definitely over salted. The otherwise unremarkable taco does feature a lot of flavor - it just needs LESS salt. Last comment - there were some flour tortillas and a small bag of chips provided. But if you're going to provide chips please also include a small container of medium or mild pico de gallo salsa. If there is already super hot salsa and green salsa, it's not asking too much to include the pico de gallo. read more

Let me just take about one minute. To rant about my DoorDash tripas fries from this location. Oh my gosh oh my gosh oh my gosh! Now of course most of us are used to Asada fries, but I did mine with a little twist and did tripas. These fries hands down, finger licking, mouthwatering the best i've had to any comparison of any other type of ""stuffed fries. The toppings I just offload together with my meat choice and there was no stinginess in portions with this order either. I washed it down with a small order of tamarind juice. And I was the happiest camper. My first experience with this location and I give it a five star even with the order being DoorDash my meal was still enjoyable not soggy or cold. I'm pretty impressed! This is now my go-to quick lunch place. Truly great flavors. I have been here atleast 10 times in the past month since I discovered this gem. You know it's great authentic Mexican food when it's all filled with Mexican folks lunching happily. Summary: No-frills mexican diner with plenty of seating with a broad menu (though I've only really tried the burritos). The first time I went here, I had the best burrito of my life at this place. However, Tres Potrillos is inconsistent as when I next went back, it was very sloppy and mediocre. I would gamble again for that first burrito though... Good: When I went the first time, the burrito had a really great balance of savory meat and beans with freshness from the salsa verde and pico de gallo. The main thing I really loved here was tbe variety in textures and flavors. I am not exaggerating when I say it was probably the best burrito I've ever had. We ordered two regular burritos, a chile verde burrito and a carnitas burrito. Both were very good, the carnitas burrito was probably a bit better. The carnitas were crisp grilled, the way we like them, and the were very flavorful. The chile verde was also tasty, but the flavor was a bit more subdued. The rice and beans in the burritos were very good. The rice was flavorful, fluffy, and moist as opposed to too soft and wet, as is often the case. The salsa bar had a number of sauces, radishes, pickled vegetables, and there was a bin where you could serve yourself chips. The sauces were interesting. There was a red and green salsa, as well as a smokey orangish colored sauce. All delicious. A solid yes on the food. We'll be back the next time we have a hankering for carnitas, and also plan to investigate the other dishes because the whole menu looks pretty good! read more

My new favorite taco joint. We were originally going to get Chavez but it was a lit rainy so we wanted to eat inside. We ordered: Tacos plate: 4/5 the tripe was nice and crispy like I like it. Carne and al pastor were tasty. Hubby said lengua was ok. Came with rice and beans. Caldo de res: 4/5 big serving of beef soup yum! Quesadilla: a bit burnt so the girls didn't really like it. I came here recently because of my quest for an ideal breakfast burrito. I've been here a few times before for the tacos and burritos. They were good, but it's been too long to recall any details. I asked if they could do ham and bacon. I assumed they were going to do half and half but they added extra meat (with an up-charge). It wasn't too bacon and hammy like I was concerned about. The potatoes seemed like they were boiled. I wish they were crispy or made of hash browns/fries instead, but I haven't found any in the south bay like that. The burrito was on par with ones I've eaten the past few months. However, the salsa bar makes Tres Portillos an overall better experience. We were at the Mexican market next door and we decided to check this place out for dinner. What we ordered: - Burrito with al pastor ($9): For a $9 burrito, this definitely fell short of my expectations. The beans and rice were good but the al pastor was boring. There was nothing special about it, no pineapple, bland seasoning (tasted only like paprika), and it seemed like they gave us the itty bitty leftover bits. - Shrimp fajitas plate ($15): quite a hefty portion but most of it was beans and rice. I really liked the shrimp fajitas, they were well cooked and the peppers and onions had that a bit of caramelization which was great. Tres Potrillos is the best Mexican food I can have in Northern California. Their meats are well seasoned, tender, and juicy and their many salsas are just fantastic. My favorite meat is al pastor but carne aside, chile verde, carnitas are all fantastic as well. I've ventured out to many good Mexican restaurants but I'm glad Tres Potrillos is my local goto joint. Covid update They now have 8 tables set up outside for you to dine out(?) Awesome set. Best to eat when hot. Tip Their green salsa(guacamole based) is one of the best salsas I've ever had. If there was a downside if any, prices have been going up. Expect to pay 11 plus for a regular burrito and about 15 for a plate dishes. Still, quality of food and huge portions let's you get past that. It's well worth it. read more

If you want authentic Mexican food, this restaurant is the place to go. It gets my boyfriend's stamp of approval. The menu is pretty simple and they also have pictures of their menu items on the side. I got their carne asada enchiladas plate ($14.99) with 3 enchiladas with your choice of meat as well as rice, beans, and lettuce with sour cream on the side. The plate is huge! I was full after eating 2/3 of the enchiladas but was so good I finished the whole plate. It was a little on the saltier side but I ordered a large Horchata which was great to drink (not watery, the right amount of cinnamon). My very hungry friend wanted a fish burrito so he took me to this place. It's right beside the Chavez supermarket and right off the 101 freeway. First thing I notice was the colorful sign board behind the cashier and their prices. I noticed that the prices are a little more expensive then other Mexican restaurants and food trucks I frequent. Anyways I order the fish burrito with no beans for about $9 and change w/o tax. While waiting I availed myself to the nacho bar and their various salsas. I took the red while my buddy grabbed the green. When I tried both they had absolutely no bite. I like a good bite with some nice sweating but neither happened. The chips were excellent, warm and crunchy. The burrito arrived and it seemed very big almost like a large or super burrito. After about half was it dawned on me and my friend it was huge so I had leftovers to take home. As for taste I would give it 3.5 stars. There was a lot of rice but not enough fried fish IMHO. We typically get some kind of burrito (breakfast, California, super), but their taco salad is a great healthier option. They have a salsa bar inside where you can also get a complimentary bag of chips. They have rotating Mexican juices (watermelon is delicious) as well as Mexican sodas and beer/micheladas. It smelled disgusting like a rat food, and just one bite gave stomach ache to my partner. Beans smelled bad like refried in pork lard or something. Rice on the side were straight up bland.
