When I heard that H-E-B opened its own BBQ restaurant I was sure it wouldn't be that good. I was proven wrong. I'm always surprised at how H-E-B decides to take on nearly every industry. From amazing plus and market stores, to an organic one of a kind market known as central market, online grocery pickup and delivery, ready to cook chef meals and now restaurants and cafes!!! On to the review... I recently turned 21 and wanted catering that would go well with ice cold beer and what better than some Texas styled bbq? I looked at my options around town but I tried the fatty brisket at another party I went to and tried the pork ribs at the actual place and I was blown away at how good it was!!!! The ribs, fatty brisket and sausage was amazing!!!! Brisket is fatty but full of flavor, pork ribs were smoked to perfection and fell right off the bone and the sausage didn't have a heavy pepper taste which was GOOD!! The food was great and a big hit at the party and everyone loved it!! Had leftovers that lasted me for another day or two. Was it the best bbq ever? Probably not but it sure followed damn close. The place is always clean and the staff are always great. They have 2 pit masters at each location, offer beer on tap and got 1$ draft beers on Tuesday!!!!!!!! Four stars because there is some cons I've experienced. They tend to start running out of food around 4pm so get here early. Also when I put my catering order I had to call back to change pick up time and they couldn't find it so they ended up making 2 on the day I picked it up which I felt bad about but I hope they use it for other customers and I also waited 25 minutes to pick up the food. Is this the best BBQ I've ever had? No. But, it's pretty darn good when you're craving BBQ and when it has a quick drive-thru or you have the option to eat inside if you're in this area. I was pretty impressed overall on my 1st visit to True Texas BBQ. The set-up inside is very nice making it feel like it's not even inside of HEB. They also have an outdoor seating area and I heard that there's live music? But I've never seen that. That would definitely make it even more awesome. The BBQ itself is extremely yummy plus the sides. I've enjoyed everything from there. In addition, they have like 3 different types of BBQ sauce depending on your mood and serving cups galore to help yourself. The Brisket was very tender and tasty, better than I expected. The Ribs were tasty, sort of dry. Neither had BBQ Sauce, nor did they offer it. I was very disappointed with my sides. The potato salad wasn't the traditional kind, like HEB's mustard potato salad. I couldn't eat it even after adding sweet relish & mustard. The Brisket Beans were a lost cause. I've been through the drive through 4 times. The first two times were during lunch hours, and excellent. But this review is for the last two times, which were in the evening. I came through two days ago and placed my order. I made sure to ask for BBQ sauce, bread, pickles and onions, as I noticed the previous time I wasn't given any or asked if I wanted any. Opening my order later, I noticed there was no BBQ sauce, the side order wasn't filled, the bread was stale, and the meat was luke warm and dried out. I called and spoke with Jaelyn, who asked me to come back for a remake. Today, I drove all the way back for the remake. Very small order btw. Notified the person at the speaker about my order. Waited for 15 minutes behind a single car. The same person who took my order, opened the window, offered no apology for the wait, and proceeded to quote me the wrong order. He then disappears confused after I said that wasn't my order. Finally, comes back remembering that I was the remake order. I confirm and he then disappears again. Comes back, this time stating ALL the remake items are not available. Why didn't he say anything before? Why have me wait in line for 15 minutes, just to tell me the remake items aren't available? He could have told me at the speaker. So I got my money back and made my complaints. I was asked to come back a third time for the remake, but there is no guarantee this exact scenario won't happen again until they decide to rehire or update their policies. Given the chance to remake an order, this establishment instead decided to rudely waste my time. My advice, do not come here in the afternoon. The food is lower quality or not available (which they may not say until you get to the window much later), and the wait time is very long. read more

Not that bad if your looking for a quick bite. Its inside the HEB lines can be long if its lunch or busy shopping time. Potatoes are good, brisket decent. I had such a good experience here earlier in the week that I came back a few days later. I figured I might be taking a chance going on a Friday night based on other reviews I read where items had run out. Sure enough all but one of the desserts was unavailable. They have been out of banana pudding both times I have been here so we ordered the seasonal chocolate silk pie for my husband. I'm not a big chocolate fan but I still wanted to try it. It does not appear to be made in house since it was a sealed plastic cover under the plastic lid. It was extremely sweet so one taste was enough. I ordered the frito pie and it was cold by the time I drove 10 minutes to get home. I had enjoyed the brisket the first time I ordered from here but what I did not like about the chopped brisket on the frito pie is that it had a sweet bbq sauce on it and I prefer the pepper bbq sauce instead. It was a large serving though. The brisket beans were delicious the first time I ordered from here but this time it tastes as though a different recipe had been used. The first time the beans were peppery and the brisket added a smokey taste. This time they tasted more like borracho beans, which I like, but I was expecting the same bbq style beans from my first visit. If this had been my first meal from True Texas, I probably would not have returned since it was just mediocre. I'll probably come again but not on a busy night. read more

Went there for the first time and was extremely disappointed after what I thought would be great BBQ for a fair price. Ordered a 1 meat plate that comes with two sides. Received watermelon that was going out of date and tasted like it was on its last day. The worst part was that I revived literally one single slice of brisket...just one sliver of meat. I understand it's a one meat plate but I never took it for being just that single slice. Tried this last night because I've been craving BBQ but it's so expensive (understandably so). This place wasn't too expensive so that's a plus! I wasn't sure how good it will be since it was from HEB, no offense. But it actually tastes pretty good! The ribs are sweet, would like a little more spice but that's okay. The brisket is good, I just wish there wasn't so much fat!!!! I ordered lean and it was still fatty... I understand people like their fatty brisket but I just can't do it. And the sausage was good too. As well as everything else. I give it 4 stars because although it was decently good, it didn't have that homemade feel to it. We loved the taste. Ribs were really falling off the bones, Birsket was moist, but Pulled pork was kinda dry and not so flavorful. Food (when I finally got my order): brisket tasty but portion small, Cole slaw OK, green beans mushy and little flavor Atmosphere: very rustic Service: POOR My lunch companion got order and after 5 minutes I went to counter to check on mine. Got to give a shout out to what I'd call more of a commercialized BBQ spot for Texas BBQ spots I'd put this place on the same level as a Rudy's or Dickey's BBQ). Wifey and I have hit this place a good dozen times since it's been open. We've never been let down. Quick service, quick delivery of food and the quality has always been good. The 1/2 chicken is my go to here. Wifey's all over the board but usually ends up the the turkey breast. Went to get BBQ potatoes for dinner at 6pm on a Saturday night. We pulled up to the drive thru and the girl starts off by saying "hello, we are currently out of chicken, pork, sausage, baked potatoes and corn" (she said 1 or 2 more things but I can't remember we what they were.) What I don't understand is how they are out of all of that at 6pm on a Saturday! They are connected to a grocery store! You really can't get potatoes from the produce section? It wasn't like they had a mad rush, there weren't that many cars in the drive thru. This is the 4th time we've come here and twice now we've had to leave because they were out of what we were wanting. Really disappointed. I got all of the way home and I had asked them to please make sure to put in extra pickles, onions and vinegar BBQ sauce and I didn't get any of that. I asked for lean burnt ends, but just to make sure it was lean, which they said they could do and most of my brisket was pure fat. I only ended up with a small piece that was actual meat. There was a lot of hype about the BBQ over the past couple of weeks leading up to the grand opening. I was not impressed with the service or the food. After waiting close to 35 minutes in line to order I waited another 15 minutes to get my food. I been to a few of the Top 10 BBQ restaurants in the state and haven't waited that long for food. I ordered the St. Louis pork ribs (beef ribs only on Fridays) and potato salad. The pork was fairly dry and didn't have much flavor so I had to smother it in BBQ sauce which was pretty tasty. While this place is convenient and provided a nice modern "BBQ spot" atmosphere, the meat just doesn't cut it. Especially for "true Texas" style BBQ. There is no smokey flavor in the brisket or turkey. The turkey was very fatty and both meats seamed mushy, not beefy. The ribs, however, fell off the bone and were delicious! While the mac-n-cheese was served just above room temperature, it was pretty good as well. The best thing about the place is the sauce. They do a great Rudy's style, spicy, Texas sauce, and a nice sweet sauce as well. If you want good BBQ, go to The BBQ Station. Is this a true 5? Probably not, having moved from austin I have struggled to find good bbq, I was told to try HEB, what?!?!?!? So I gave it a try. I had brisket, sausage and ribs. All three were very good, I was least impressed with the sausage but sausage is blah to me. Brisket and ribs is my favorite and I was thoroughly surprised. This is similar to Rudy's to me, but a step up, but not quite the same as some of the better bbq in Austin. Will be back, it is too close to not be my go-to. read more
