They were happy to replace with what I thought was safe..tuna...it was obviously frozen ahi tuna!! WOW. This was our first time and it will definitely not be the last. We heard about omakase style ordering (let the chef pick your items for you) and knew we wanted to try it. Johnny was amazing!!! Everything he brought us was a spectacle of flavor and eye candy. And we left without that overly stuffed feeling we tend to get when we think we know what to order. This place has always been my go to comfort food. Nice staff and great options for my very strict diet. Tonight was a different story. Not only did it take over 30 minutes for anyone to acknowledge us ( only 3 other couples there) but my order came and sat there as we waited another 30 minutes for my husbands food to arrive (all sushi). I came here for a feel good delicious meal with my husband and will not sit there and eat as he waits, nor do I want to sit there as he finally gets to eat. We would like to enjoy a meal TOGETHER! So very disappointed in the very poor service we received, as we watched order after order go out the door while everyone in there waited for their food, some of which was wrong when it finally arrived. Taking off a star because I ordered the giant scallop sashimi and it didn't taste like or have the texture of a scallop and with its uniform roundness, I am pretty sure it was Skate Fish or some other imitation scallop product... Everything else was good though! read more

We've been watching too many life in Japan videos on YouTube which has been stoking our fire to have Japanese food. Our favorite restaurant was closed on Sunday so we went on the hunt for a new restaurant. We ordered with curbside pickup so we could get it as fresh as possible. We only live a couple blocks away. The food was ready early and we arrived early so that worked out well. The waitress came out in a mask. All the sushi was great. The salmon melted in our mouths. Their sauce on the vegetable yakisoba was tasty. We also ordered the salmon sushi (sake), the house special roll, and the oh you fancy huh roll and a special hot drink for two to go. Careening through SE Phoenix, I was in the mood for finding a tucked away Sushi experience. I know they exist; these gems with chefs who have the right fish sourcing connections and don't need glitz, just a bar with refrigerated aquarium delights. And Yanagi hit the mark. The black snapper was a revelation. And I love how the rest of the sushi menu had equal parts daring and standard fair. We have been looking for a good sushi place since moving from CA... and we found it!!!! Good, solid menu with a variety of things. We tried the bento boxes so we could get a taste of multiple items. Good ol Dad, me, polished off the alcohol. LOL. Done! He was till hungry so I ordered 10 more salmon sashimi and 4 more salmon nigiri. The sushi quality is super fresh. The sashimi pieces are huge! Open late! Friendly! Delicious! We found this place on Yelp on a recent work trip to Phoenix. Luckily, this place was open on a Monday evening to satisfy our sushi craving. They had a bunch of servers and the place was not too busy but our waitress came to our table once. Couldn't even get a drink refill or our check. The WORST part was when a hostess was trying to rush and clean the table next to us she dropped a bowel of half eaten food on the floor that came and landed on me and my plate! Short Review: A solid sushi place with good services. Yanagi Sushi is a restaurant that specialize in sushi. They do offer other food category, such as a bento box, but for the most part, it's gonna be all rice lunch and dinner besides the appetizers. So, if you don't feel like eating rice, either get sashimi, appetizers, or find another restaurant to go to. For more details, look below. Long Review: On the outside of Yanagi Sushi, you can see some posters on/in the windows. Those posters entails sushi, a sushi chef, and more of the shops' name "Yanagi Sushi." You can also see the red bright hanging paper labelled "grand opening." On the inside, it is midsize and spacious. Their table and chairs are are nice to look and feel, although, I feel that it was kind of out of place because the walls were white and the floor is kind of stone-washed dark grey. It would make more sense if the chairs were black and white to fit the modern look or have walls and floor wooden with deeper color like rosewood. There is a distinctive wall painting on the left side of the entrance to hallway. It is a enormous octopus with the blue waves. So, that was nice to look at. They also have bar seating, but wasn't available due to COVID-19. Moving on, I took a look at the menu and I ordered, Miso Soup, Shrimp Tempura, and Sushi + Sashimi Moriawase. It didn't take long for all of my dishes to come out, but to be fair, there wasn't that much customers either. There were only 3 people including myself. I'm not surprised because this was during lunch hour and during Sunday. People don't usually go to sushi restaurant during lunch. It's more of a dinner, especially on weekends. I got Miso Soup, Shrimp Tempura, and Sushi + Sashimi Moriawase in that order. Took about 5 - 10 minutes for all dishes. Miso Soup: Your typical miso soup if you had it before. It consist of miso paste and bonito flavor in the broth and has green onions, seaweed, and tofu. It was slightly more on the saltier side, but still good. Shrimp Tempura: It is something I truly want to learn how to cook one day. Crispy on the outside, deliciously juicy on the inside. If you had Japanese Shrimp Tempura, you'll know what I mean. The battered wasn't heavy and you can definitely taste the shrimp more, which is what you ideally want. The sauce was subtle with a hint of salt and sweetness. I would prefer if the dipping sauce was a little more bolder taste, but that's just my preference. Sushi + Sashimi Moriawase: If you had Omakase before, you'll know what the dish entails. Omakase literally means "leave it to me" in Japanese. So, it is the chef's choice on what he/she wants to place on the plate. The one I chose consist 6 sushi pieces and 10 sashimi. I love sashimi, but I also like the idea of having raw fish stack on rice. Hence, my choice of entree. As you can see in the images below, on the plate, you see on the sashimi side: 3 tuna, 3 salmon, 2 mackerel, and 2 snapper. For sushi portion, you see: tuna, white tuna, salmon, mackerel, snapper, and surf clam sushi. Generally speaking, I don't like surprises, but when it comes to food, especially sushi related, I'd prefer the chef choosing because it tells how much they know about you based on initial impression. Of course, that doesn't always follow through because this restaurant doesn't specialize in Omakase and reservation for customers. This place just merely offer you that for a fun casual experience. I've been to many sushi restaurant and it's quite a common occurrence. Of course, just because they don't specialize in Omakase, doesn't mean that their sushi is bad. In fact, Yanagi Sushi, is one of the many excellent sushi restaurant I would go to for casual sushi. For sure, it is better than many AYCE sushi and conveyor belt sushi. My only disappointment is that they don't offer grated wasabi. I love real grated wasabi, not the typical wasabi paste. They are not the same, for those who doesn't know. In conclusion, I would rate Shrimp Tempura/Sushi+Sashimi in quantity, a B+/-A and in quality, a -A/A. I'm going to skip the miso soup, cause it was nothing special, but I'd give it a B overall for those that were curious. For quantity is Shrimp Tempura, a little more shrimp for the fixed price would have been nice, either that or lower the price a bit. Sushi+Sashimi can be a bit thicker or bigger pieces because I know a sushi place that offers about the same quality sushi as here for cheaper or same price with more quantity. Quality-wise, I have no complaint here. I think they did a fine job on the Shrimp Tempura and a fantastic job on the Sushi+Sashimi, especially for a Omakase. It's really too bad I live 35 miles away from here. If I was 10 miles or less away from here, I'd come here to eat twice a week. That being said, I'll drop by here sometime during my convenient hours. Thank you for the nice presentation and taste of your food and attentive services. read more

Positive: Tasty food, clean inside, rated "A" Negative: Disgustingly rude sushi chef Other: In this instance, the terrible service outweighed the food. My family and I were walking in this strip mall by Yanagi Sushi on our way to a different place, and decided to try this restaurant out instead. Sadly, our lunch experience was horrible due to the behavior of the sushi chef. The sweet waitress came to our table to greet us and take our drink order. While conversing with us, the chef called out loud to say an order was ready. Because she was helping us, the waitress did not acknowledge the sushi chef or pick up the sushi plate. So, the chef called again more sternly and banged on the bell. The poor waitress nervously jumped, excused herself, and ran to the chef's counter to retrieve that one plate for delivery. While at that counter, the rude man reprimanded her and said "They are looking at their menus. Do your job!" At this point, we were all appalled, but my husband couldn't take it so he angrily walked out of the restaurant. We contemplated leaving altogether, but in seeing how the fragile waitress was being treated, we didn't want her to get into "more trouble" by the chef. So, we stayed. The waitress came back to our table to continue where she left off- taking our drink orders. She apologized profusely, and made excuses for the sushi chef. We clearly showed our disdain for the chef, and he peered across the small restaurant, giving me dirty looks. With her back turned to him, the waitress just kept whispering sorry. Again, she was the ONLY reason we even stayed. Meanwhile, a group of 3 ladies entered the restaurant, and took a few steps towards a table. The sushi chef sternly yelled "wait!" and held his hand up so as to say stop. The shocked women halted in their tracks, but ironically asked the waitress to be seated up at the sushi bar. In no more than 5 minutes, they stood up and exited the restaurant. They told my mother-in-law (who was outside finishing up a phone call) that the chef was extremely rude, even using expletives. Anyway, we ordered the cucumber roll, bulgogi dinner plate, poke tuna, and a child's yakisoba. We also had miso soup and the appetizer salad with ginger dressing. I can honestly say that all of the menu items were tasty. Aside from me needing to add a little flavor (low sodium soy sauce-- wish I had spicy mayo) to the poke, the rest of the food was appetizing in appearance and had just the right amount of flavor. Unfortunately, I had to give this place one star and would NOT recommend going there even if you're starving. God help that sweet waitress. read more

I truly love good food, and today he order Tuna Toro specifically for my boyfriends birthday, we have been looking forward to this meal for a week. I cannot express how above and beyond he went for us, he served us a Japanese style chef's choice sashimi spread, I have never had the flavor bursts he gave us with sauces and fresh fish, and fresh wasabi and Jalapeño. He is a phenomenal chef. Next time you stop in, give him a little free range to prepare a special sashimi dish for you, something I have never done until now. This is a great sushi place. The service is excellent and the sushi is so fresh and good. The menu is big with lots of options. The restaurant is even helpful with special dietary needs. We had both a shellfish Allergy and Gluten free in our group. The restaurant made changes to the rolls for the gluten free and had lots of non shellfish roll options.
