The family that runs this place is amazing. Always super friendly and accommodating. They'll let you customize your order however you want. I always get the Udon with tempura, seaweed, tofu and an add-on of dumplings. The tempura flakes have a ton of umami flavor and add a nice thickness to the soup. I also add a dash of chili powder to give the noodles a bit more kick. If I'm feeling super hungry I ask them to add some extra chicken to the soup too which they are happy to do. I didn't have any cash on me during one visit and they were super relaxed. "Just come back and pay us whenever you're free". I had only been by Yo Yo's a few times at that point so I wouldn't say I'm a regular. They're just really kind people and that's the type of establishment they run. Love this spot! read more

I'm in San Francisco for business for the next couple days, working in an office in the Financial District, so obviously my first order of business was to find the best places to get food, especially great value lunch-on-weekday-only places, since I get to take advantage of being here for weekday lunches. This was one of the places on my list - hard to pass up the opportunity to get cheap sushi. I will say, I was happy, but also a little disappointed, in that it didn't quite live up to my admittedly high expectations. It was certainly a huge amount of food food for 10 bucks - 4 pieces each of unagi roll, smoked salmon roll and California roll, one piece of inari, a side of seaweed salad, and a can of honey grass jelly drink. Everything is pre-prepared, so you can get in and out in under a minute if you know what you want (it was actually rather intimidating how quickly we got to the front of the line, like I was holding people up cause I was still trying to figure out the menu). But everything is pre-prepared, so it kinda reminds me of gas station sushi, just, if the ingredients were high quality. The unagi roll was honestly kinda tasteless, so I wouldn't get that again. The smoked salmon was delicious, though, and the California roll also surprisingly delicious (mostly cause there were great big pieces of fresh avocado!), and so was the inari. Seaweed salad was also just ok. Basically, not the most amazing food ever, but enjoyable. Not worth trekking across town for, but if you're in the area and want some really cheap food and zero wait, you could do way worse. Affordable, simple, and tasty spot for lunch in Jackson Square. Sushi, dumplings, soba, and more can be had for just a few dollars. I like the seaweed salad and sushi rolls for a quick snack. The chicken teriyaki is not sit down restaurant quality, but will fill you up. They recently increased the prices for the dish by 50 cents. It's still a good deal though. For $6 you can get a half order of chicken teriyaki and a side of dumplings. The soba noodles in a half serving are filling as well, though the soup has a sweeter note to it. My go-to for a CHEAP lunch near work! Seriously, anywhere in Fidi is so expensive that it's a rare gem to find something that's decently price or dare I say, inexpensive. Yo-yo's is a mom and pop hole in the wall. Seriously the old Asian couple who owns and manages this shop are actual goals. So cute and friendly with a smile always. Everything is to-go as there is no space inside this little shop. There is essentially two things on the menu: noodles (udon or soba) or chicken teriyaki. Want anything else? They probably don't have it. What they lack in variety, they make up for in consistency and price. Another really nice thing is that they have half sizes for both menu items. Meaning that if you're not a heavy eater, you can pay for a half container. How great is that! My only gripe is that it's cash only. Absolutely no reason why I would rate this place lower than 5 stars. I was expecting long lines during lunch time but when I arrived at 12, there was no line at all. I felt like udon today so I walked straight in and ordered the full udon order with a side of dumplings for a total of $8. Also beware that this place is CASH ONLY. The udon was huge for the price. I was so full finishing the entire udon and the side of dumplings. The soup was hot and the noodles still had a bite to them. The broth was surprisingly flavorful and perfect on a cold SF day like today. The little balls that you see in the soups seemed like they fried tempura batter in tiny ball form and put it on top of the soup. They were super yummy and added a really great subtle flavor to the udon. The dumplings were okay and pretty standard. Nothing special but still tasty nevertheless. Next time i'll probably try the hot soba and maybe a side of sushi since everything is just so darn cheap. Couples run the store and the lady asked me what I wanted while the person in front of me paid. Super efficient and she quickly boils the noodles. The noodles come with seaweed, tofu skin, and tempura flakes. It's a simple meal with a nice dashi broth. I also got the CA roll and it isn't like restaurant quality but half decent. Everything about this place warms my heart and tummy: 1) the adorable husband and wife team, friendly and incredibly endearing, taking your orders, executing your order to military precision, (if you're a regular, they'll remember your 'usual' too), and then the mad mathematician crunching your entire order total in his head. 2) the food - delicious seaweed salad (the best I've had in California), great selection of sushi (they run out fast so come early), chicken teriyaki (awesome), and the Pièce de résistance: the udon. I can bathe in the udon broth if there's a to-go container big enough for me to fit in. Just tried this place today as it's super close to my work. Thank the lord. Wish I found this place sooner as prices in DT are your standard fair of 10-20 dollars, no matter where you go. Extremely small place so don't expect to eat here. You get what you want and go back to your planned eating spot basically. They do have a small selection of goodies to buy. From boxed gyoza, cookies, snacks and an assortment of drinks for on the go. I had the half order of Udon and 4 pc Gyoza. Guess how much? $ 5.50... and I was totally satisfied. I typed "cheap lunch" into Yelp search and this is what I got. It was indeed a cheap lunch. Half an order of udon for $2.25 satisfied my hunger, though next time I can do without the fried crispy things that quickly turned into soggy Rice Krispies cereal. There was also one piece of tofu, slice of fishcake, and a piece of tofu skin. Yummy. They were out of the smoked salmon rolls so I got the California roll. The seaweed salad was amazingly cheap and soo good. The bf enjoyed his full order of teriyaki chicken, which came with a small salad and two slices of oranges. Total cost was $12.05. There was no line at around 1:30pm, and the food is prepared and already made so there is no wait. There is a tiny table for 1, maybe 2, so you better eat while you walk or eat in the car. I can't believe I have waited so long to write a glowing review of Yo Yo's. I have been here so many times, each one of them on a day when it wasn't raining. If I have been away from the city for a long time they always ask where I have been and welcome me back with a genuine smile. 2) the operation is more efficient than any other small take-out place. I don't eat much, and I hate when I'm given an exorbitant amount of food at any other restaurant that I end up lugging around as leftovers, so I appreciate the option to get half orders. You can also get noodles, sushi, seaweed salad, mochi, and a variety of other things. The food is alright but hey - for that price and quantity you had better not complain! Came here with my friend the other day - she knew of it and we were hungry. It was nearly 2 in the afternoon...we were hungry. Came here not knowing what to expect. Its a really tiny little shop between Chinatown and FiDi. I saw the corner Starbucks before I saw this place. Down side - there's no chairs or anything to eat at the place. Or outside. You have to walk a while... Even though I didn't see it at first, it was worth it to come! At 2PM, no one is there, and the couple working are super sweet. The elderly man took our order, and the nice lady in the back made it - she even called out "I hope you enjoy your meal!" to us as we left. Nice. We split an order of Soba and it was DELICIOUS! Soba noodles, with tons of extra stuff. I don't even know what it was, but it was SOO GOOD! There's these puffy rice things on top, next layer was seaweed, then some stuff that looked like the Chinese deep fried tofu puffs, a tofu and one of those little white sliced things with a pink swirl in it. I have no idea what they are, but they are delicious, and I shall consume it all. Oh, yeah, And the soba on the bottom. HA. They also wait to put on the lid so you can cram as much chili powder as you want on the top. Good stuff! Small family owned shop, snack and drink selection, traditional Japanese items that you can order in full and half sizes.
