My experience here was absolutely awful. This is one of the worst "Italian" restaurants you can go to. I came with my friends and the service provided was absolutely horrible. We got there on time. However, that tall, long haired, shaved dude made us wait 15 min outside for no reason; even though out table was ready. He had an attitude for us all night long. He was super rude for literally no reason. I would left the restaurant immediately; however, my fiancé's family was there and it was too late to book anywhere else. Spontaneously ended up at 3 Giovani on a Friday night with my boy friend. The staff was very friendly and the ambiance is romantic. They serve freshly made bread that is on the house -- it was warm, soft and came with a delicious tomato olive oil dip. We got a special pomegranate salad that was very yummy too. The main courses however were average. We got the chicken parm and steak special. I asked for the steak to be cooked medium rare but it was over cooked and not juicy. Ravioli Funghetto: ravioli in mushroom sauce --------------------------------------------- This pasta was very rich and creamy. Delicious but it can feel a bit heavy after a few bites. The ravioli was stuffed with cheese and then the whole dish was generously coated in a creamy mushroom sauce. They also provide cheese grating and fresh cracked pepper for each pasta dish. Rigatoni Buttera: rigatoni with pork sausage bits, green peas, in creamy tomato sauce --------------------------------------------- Yum! I would get this again. It's bright from the tomato, spicy and sweet from the pork sausages (you can request beef sausages too), creamy from the sauce. Everything complimented each other very well. This is consistently the best meal in the Village. It is a small restaurant with 15 plus tables in the dining room and 4 outside. In the summer I love sitting out for a late afternoon lunch. I have three favorite dishes: 1) Any pizza! Bread and sauce outstanding 2) The ruccala salad adding sautéed mushrooms and tomatoes. 3) the chicken Martini. Basically a chicken piccata that is extremely tender and always delicious. I often order the specials for an entree and have not had a bad experience. If the swordfish is a special, order it! One of my favorite lunch places to order from. I love the octopus, cooked to perfection. The salmon is great. Nicely cooked and served with avocado asparagus, cherry tomatoes and onions. The pasta is good too and the lunch special always has a nice potion of salad and very good bread and butter. I have only tried the butera though, enough to know they know pasta. My only complaint, but it is enough for me to sometimes not order from them is that their delivery guy always call telling me he left his ID and cant come up to deliver to the door. Even though we had a reservation also and had arrived before them, we could not have the table. Tiramisu is my fiancé's all time favorite dessert so we eat quite a lot of it and each place has its own touch. This was so light and fluffy while also having such rich and decadent flavors. Amazing! I would recommend they change their playlist though. It seems like it's a mix of 80s and 90s American pop songs despite having a nice Italian feel inside. I decided to try more local places and finally ventured to Tre Giovani, which is a stone's throw from my building. The dining room is simple and rustic: wood tables without checkered tablecloths. It seems to be super-popular with families--both local and visiting, at least on the weekends: expect lots of kids. Food-wise, I would say 3 to 3.5 stars. The grilled artichokes were kind of tasty, though the SO wasn't a fan of the thick outer layers that are hard to chew (just avoid those). The Involtini Di Melanzane (eggplant stuffed with spinach, ricotta cheese, and baked in tomato sauce with mozzarella) was delish. The pizza, which my partner really enjoyed, struck me as only middle-of-the-road by thin pie standards, but I will average it out. Prices are decent and good wines are available. If you're looking for a simple, neighborhood Italian place, I will take Tre Giovani over the more touristy places west of here. read more

The food was great. The staff was not. I give anyone the benefit of the doubt if they are acting rudely--maybe they had a bad day or something is stressing them out. With the exception of one person, the staff was so rude. I brought a guest from India to show them around NYU and we chose this restaurant to go to. When she passed the staff to go to the bathroom, I saw the waitstaff dramatically namaste-ing at each other with deep bows. I found it extremely offensive and as an Indian, really taken aback. A native New Yorker, I have never seen anything like it, honestly. I was shocked. I had to explain to my guest that most places in NY are not like this. When we were eating, the staff kept coming right next to our table to look out the window, even though the entire wall behind us was a huge window. I don't know. I hope there was another reason, but I just couldn't shake off the feeling that they didn't like us, though we honestly just came there to eat some Italian food. I felt like we were a burden to them and they wanted us to leave, even though the restaurant was at 50% occupation. Disclaimer: My review is a bit biased based on the circumstances in which I came across this place. The food was in fact very good, the service was fine, but the five stars is largely based on the warm and cozy dimly lit ambiance with only two other tables taken on Christmas Eve. I am from the city so for Christmas I stayed in town and enjoyed everyone else being away. My family and I were on our way to see the Christmas tree down at South Street Seaport (because I see no reason to ever go to see the tree in Rockefeller Center or go to midtown during the holiday season). The manager was unbelievably rude, giving the two of us a table tucked into a corner although the restaurant was empty and remained largely empty while we were there. The manager said no in a rude manner when I asked if we could sit at a better table. In addition, the table he assigned was situated under the microphones and when I asked if he could lower the music at least until the restaurant was more crowded, he said that if we did not like the restaurant we should leave--again with a rude brusque manner. I came here for my sister's bachelorette and it was awesome. The service was swift. We had a party of 15ish and the waitresses were quick. Water refilled, champagne classes refilled (even though our bottle was sitting on the table right under our noses). I got the lasagna (not on the menu) which was really good. The marina was amazing and goes great with the complimentary bread. Most places are unbearably salty for me. The polenta was also really good, though I think it could use more truffle oil (only because I loooove truffle oil). Everything on the menu looked so good.... Had a horribly obnoxious experience. I called to check if there was any availability and they immediately told me "no, there won't be for the next two and a half hours." I was nearby so I went to go check for myself because it didn't seem right. When I walked by, all of the outdoor dining was empty, and only two tables inside were full. A woman approached me as I walked in the restaurant, I asked if she had any availability and she said yes and was about to seat us, and then her boss immediately came behind her and cut her off. He rudely looked us up and down and with a condescending tone asked "will you be dining here tonight?" We said yes, are there any tables inside? (It was 50 degrees outside) he said "no, all tables are taken for the next two hours" he was about to walk away and we had to ask about outdoor seating at least, to which he reluctantly said we could have a wobbly corner table outside that was not under a heater, meanwhile there were five empty tables under heaters. we assumed the other tables were reserved, but as we were eating we noticed another group walk in and he asked them if they would like to be seated outside or inside. It was clear because of our appearance or attire he did not want us inside his restaurant even though we were in decent dining attire, of course nothing like the pretentious fancy suit he was wearing. Throughout our entire experience no one came to the 'taken' outside tables under the heaters. It was clear there were no reservations and he purposefully sat us at the worst table. The waitress was not friendly or welcoming, did not say any words to us other than "hi." I will definitely not be bringing my business here and will be telling people about how rude and judgmental the owner / host is. read more

When we asked for the price of the family style pasta/salad options we were treated with hostility and condescension, as if we shouldn't even be eating there if we cared at all about the money we were spending. The manager promised us it would be cheaper than if we all ordered our own plates, but he still WOULD NOT give us a concrete number. I finally put my foot down and we all just ordered our own plates. We found out from another table that we would have been paying at least 20 dollars more per person had we listened to the manager, which would have been ON TOP of the 16 dollars worth of water we never asked for and were never informed cost money. I would prefer to believe he was just ignorant rather than deceitful, but either way, if you can't give your customers an accurate price for something after they literally beg you for it, you really should not be a manager. I really enjoyed my entire meal experience at Tre Giovani. The place is small and oh so lovely. We sat outside which is adorned with soft lighting and beautiful greenery. The linguini with clams, mussels and calamari was delicious though the best part was the sirloin steak which was cook exactly as requested. The bruschetta appetizer was pretty good though I didn't care much for the stuffed green pepper. I found it to be soggy and could have been better if breadcrumbs were added to the stuffing and baked instead of sautéed. The chianti and Pinot Grigio by the glass perfectly complimented our meal. This place used to be popular when I lived in the city 10 years ago being just down the street from the old NYU student center. I am glad to see that they are still around. Their ravioli al funghetto used to be their best dish, and judging by the other reviews on Yelp, that still appears to hold true. I opted for the fettucine al salmone which is deliciously prepared with fresh pasta. And while the sauce was good, I object to the quality of the salmon used. Perhaps they should improve the quality of the salmon and charge a few dollars more. Nonetheless, I like this place and am happy with having a simple Italian meal at a low price. read more
