Since my family and I were in Irvine on New Years Eve, we decided to get cake here. I looked online for best cakes in Irvine and was recommended by Google search and Yelp to come here. It did not disappoint! This bakery sells cakes and pastries--both American and Asian. I love the cute minimalist setup and I noticed that they were crowned one of the best bakeries in Irvine by Yelp. Upon arriving, I was greeted by a friendly worker who turned out to speak Cantonese as well (which helped with conversing my mom). She gave us solid advice on what to get. Their most popular cakes are the strawberry shortcake and tres leches. Since we don't really like too sweet cakes, she recommended the strawberry shortcake. It was pretty good! Wow color me impressed! Saw all the positive reviews and decided to pick up a cake. Wanted the matcha but need advance reservations. So we got the Tres Leche and Im more impressed with it than Portos. It has a hint of cinnamon. The cake is moist with the cake itself being dense with flavor but fluffy and light in texture (sponge cake like). Not very sweet which is perfect. I cant say enough good things about this cake. I will definitely have to try the other flavors. So excited to find this spot! read more

I think one of the best elements of this bakery is the service. I was in the area and my wife asked me "surprise me" with a dessert. I asked a few questions to the attendant she happily replied with good info and earnestness. From my view she cared about what she was selling, thought they were all delicious! I happily chose a "Japanese Cheesecake", "chocolate roll cakes", "Tres leche cake" and wedding cookies. We couldn't get enough of the roll cake or cheesecake. Delicious! The Tres leche cake...I've never had previously, which is the reason I chose it...personally didn't care for it. My wife on the other hand liked it and said it's as good an example of this style of cake as she's ever had. The tea cookies we had after lunch today. Great little bakery near South Coast Plaza! I tried their almond croissant and picked up a few coconut puddings from Kokonut, which they serve. Super convenient that you can get two different store's products in one place. The coconut puddings were delicious and the almond croissant was so flaky and came with plenty of almond paste. Today is Mother's Day and I came in to grab a 6" tiramisu cake. Called last night and asked to reserve one to make sure we got it. The person on the phone said no need because we will have them readily available and to just come in. Well I come in and they are sold out of the 6" cakes. But they do have the 8" ones available for $20 more. I explained the situation and they seemed confused at my issue. They keep saying that they have the 8" if I want it. So I ask them to discount it to the 6" price since I don't need a cake that big and for $20 more. All they could say sad sorry we can't do that. Worse customer service ever. Will never be coming back here and I don't recommend believing them if they tell you to just come in. Specifically ask them to put one aside with your name on it if you buy from here. Bakery 101 hands down makes the best matcha cake I ever had. I was browsing around looking for a birthday cake for my wife and stumbled upon this bakery. I called in and asked for any matcha cake they had in stock, but the owner said that the matcha cakes were made to order and it typically takes about 3 days for them to make. I called in on a Sunday and needed the cake by the following Wednesday, but they close on Mondays, so technically it would only give them less than 2 days to make it. However, they were nice enough to accommodate my request and made it ready just in time for my wife's birthday celebration. The matcha cake I ordered was 6" (for $49 - totally worth the price). They also offer them in 8" as well. The cake itself looked beautiful like a piece of art. I opted for the matcha cake with matcha cream (best decision). As for the taste, my wife rarely eats anything that's too sweet for her taste palette. This cake had the perfect balance of matcha and cream. Light and fluffy. It's not too rich nor too sweet.
