Came here twice on my trip to NYC as their menu has such amazing recreations of vegan sushi. Though the prices are pretty high. I enjoyed the music and the servers were friendly - McAllister. They have a good deal for the lunch special. I think they should offer a combo plate, I would love to try one of every sushi roll. I realize that's not practical for the chef, so they should offer that during a 1 hour happy hour so everyone in the restaurant can share the same rolls. I'm sure a lot of food goes to waste when people order multiple things and leave half the roll on a table. I got the Grilled Chicken Bao from the shared plates section, it's only 3 buns, how is this shared? The buns were flavorless but it was a filling dish. The Black Truffle Udon was so mushy it was inedible. Spicy crab roll made of tofu and chickpeas was good but a bit too spicy for me. In the dim restaurant, they garnished the black plate with a ponzu sauce (which I didn't initially see) so every time I put my chopsticks down between bites they got covered in sauce unknowingly then my hands got covered it in when I touched the chopsticks. The tea is shockingly $12! Starters are $21. The drinks and desserts were really innovative! This experience made me a believer in vegan sushi. Of course it's not the same flavor and texture as actual fish, but most of what we had melted in my mouth, just like real sushi. The spicy "salmon" roll is a home run, and the spring rolls nicely seasoned with a mixture of textures. But the off-putting presentation on the mushroom roll primed my palate to be skeptical, and indeed I found the texture of the quinoa (?) dry and the mousse on top to be grainy. First time coming here. A friend invited me for lunch. Easy to get to and it was not very crowded when we arrived. We had no reservation so getting seated for easy. We came for 2pm wknd lunch. Menu has sushi items and as well a list of other hot entrees and appetizers. I looked ahead and I was already convinced that I was going to get the Pork Shumai and the chicken pad thai. But when I sat down I actually for the Spicy Crab roll and the Lemon mint drink. I still ordered my Shumai and Pad Tha to go however. I am not vegan but I def sat there eating that Spicy roll not even giving full thought to the fact that it was not real seafood. It was flavorful with the right amount of "spicy". Definitely recommend that. I thought they had a crispy rice type of roll but I didn't see it on menu. I did not eat the Pad Thai and Shumai until day later. I found the Shumai filling to be a bit salty. I don't know if would have tasted as salty if I had consumed it in the store. I wanted something healthy and delicious and this place was close to my hotel. The service was friendly and quick. The food was so delicious, really flavorful. I got the mushroom salad, and mushrooms were nicely smoked and flavorful while the dressing and cheese complimented the savory flavor. The spicy ramen was not too spicy and had a rich creamy broth. Beyond Sushi is an absolute gem! We arrived late at 9:10 PM, and they still welcomed us without hesitation--a rare and much-appreciated gesture. From start to finish, every bite was pure perfection. The pork shumai was an explosion of flavor juicy, tender, and packed with the perfect blend of seasoning. The bao was incredibly soft, but the real star was the veggie meat inside, which was seasoned so beautifully that it could rival any traditional version. And then there was the Nutty Buddy wrap a masterpiece of textures and flavors. Honestly, the only thing left to do after this meal was take a bite of the plate because it was that good. Was craving sushi for quite a long while and wanted to try a new place with a friend of mine on a weeknight. We were just walking around and my friend told me about Beyond Sushi. Therefore, I wanted to give it a try. The interior seems pretty interesting. It's got this industrial feel, but it feels quite airy because of the super high ceilings. I thought it was a cool touch. Now for the most important stuff, we shared 3 items, of which I'll mention below: 1) Sweet Chili Cauliflower Wings: This was interesting. Definitely tasted the sweetness, but I think it was missing a little bit of the heat with the chili. I wonder if it wasn't tossed properly. They were properly cooked though and the dill sauce perfectly complemented the wings. We did taste a bit of the heat at the bottom, but by then it was a bit too late. I'd say it was about a 4/5. 2) Mighty Mushroom Roll: This was simple, but truthfully effective. The combo of the mushroom + tofu is nearly perfect. The tofu was cut into super small cubes and it was quite tasty too. Seasoned quite well. The Black Rice is something I haven't had with sushi in the past. I thought this was a good addition. I'd give this a 5/5 3) Spicy Mang Roll: The roll itself wasn't bad. Tasted the avocado. Didn't realize I ordered another roll with the black rice. The toasted cayenne sauce was a great add too. What I didn't fully taste was the mango. Maybe it was because it was fried. I don't know. The roll was still quite good though. Maybe 4.5/5 Combine these ratings with the service (impeccably fast) and I think this leans more towards a 5 than a 4. I think I'd return again. read more

When we started eating a plant based diet 13ish years ago, Beyond Sushi had one location that quickly became one of our favorite spots. It was where we realized that food is a vehicle for flavor and texture, whatever it is made from. Let me state off the bat that the service was quite conscientious. It was just as we remembered from our first experience. We ordered three items to share, two of which we tried the last time. The first was the $11 Five Spice Chick'n Dumplings. The ingredients appeared right, especially the combination of Napa cabbage, garlic, ginger, chili panko, and five-spice. I've been to Beyond Sushi three times now (the UES location and this location) and I have to say that this location is the best one!!! It is the flagship location of the brand and it is also the biggest. Food also to me is the tastiest here. We got the Shoyu Ramen which was incredibly interesting in terms of how the vegan alternatives of the egg and pork slices taste. The textures were very true to what the actual item is supposedly to be like which is quite amazing. Of course the taste would be different but it was still quite nice for vegan egg and vegan meat. I think the pork was my favorite here but the vegan soft boiled egg had such a unique texture and taste. We also got the chikn and broccoli and I've gotten this dish three times already and this location makes it the best. The chicken is definitely my favorite part of the dish. Who knew vegan chicken nuggets can taste so good. Though I will say if you get this dish at another location, it may not be as good (speaking from personal experience). The servers were nice and attentive. There is a lot of seating and varied seating in the space. Light, fresh, not too sweet, and the perfect mix of warm, coconutty, and chocolately. Beyond Sushi is an incredible spot for inventive sushi that happens to be fully plant-based. I am absolutely in love with this spot. The decor and service were both excellent. It feels like you're dining high end with prices that honestly match any other restaurant in New York. We started with their Chick'n Dumplings ($11) and Spicy Salmon Tartare ($18), and both were incredible. The dumplings were some of the best I've had and the tartare was impeccable. This was my favorite dish of the evening. For our main rolls, we tried the Spicy Jackfruit Crab ($17) and the Smoky Dragon ($17), and let me tell you - definitely some of the best vegan sushi I've ever had. The smoky dragon had a complex flavor profile with the eggplant unagi and ponzu glaze. It was simply delicious and both rolls were top notch. Don't forget dessert - their Ube Cheesecake ($14) was absolute heaven. The cashew-based treat was perfect to close out a wonderful meal. We finally made our first trip here since the menu revamp, and it fully lived up to our expectations. We are regulars at the 56th St location which is the smaller more casual one that focuses on their classics that they've been perfecting for decades. The 37th St location still has the classic veggie sushi rolls as well as other adventurous, innovative dishes that will impress your vegan and meat eating friends alike. We started with the special, a tuna hand roll. Incredible. Loved the black caviar and fresh shiso. Definitely hope they get some hand rolls on the regular menu. Next we had the smoked mushroom salad which was loaded with flavor (and mushrooms); we appreciated the generous size. Then we had some of their standby rolls, the sweet tree roll (with sweet potatoes and alfalfa sprouts - so funky and fun), the spicy mang roll (a classic among classics, and impossible to get tired of), and the rainbow roll (loaded with veggies and topped with their incredible salmon). Hard to say which is the best (just get them all). Then we ventured into the new entrees featuring Chunk steak and went with the black pepper steak accompanied by Japanese yams and bok choy. This was my first time trying Chunk steak. It's delicious and was so well seasoned. The veggies that accompanied it also had me yammering for more. We closed out the meal with the strawberry matcha tart which was delightful. I used to have a bit of an addiction to Planta Queen, but Beyond Sushi has now pulled solidly ahead with these new menu items that bring the ooh and ahh factor while managing to be a little on the healthier/cleaner side. I haven't eaten here in 5 years but recently came back to the city to relive eating at one of my favorite restaurants! The experience didn't disappoint. I'm quite late in writing this review, but we tried Beyond Sushi back in 2019 when our friend introduced us to it. He was visiting NYC and is vegan and said this was one of the places he HAD to go to while here. We are so glad he did, because we have been back quite a few times since and now our daughter is a big fan too! She was one of the most particular eaters when it came to food, but this was one place she surprisingly liked. The Nutty Buddy Wrap and Mighty Mushroom Roll are definitely our favorite. The dumplings can be hit or miss depending on the day, but when they are good, they are very good! They have expanded their menu quite a bit since the last time I was there, so I am really looking forward to going back and trying some of the new items. Ok, so I loved this place so much the first time, I had to come back before leaving New York. On my first experience, we got the food to go. I got the nutty buddy, and the rainbow roll, and both were fantastic. We came back in person just a few days later, and I wanted to get the green machine I saw so many people rave about in their reviews. Unfortunately, beyond sushi doesn't have that roll anymore, so I got the exact same order a second time. The first time I wasn't sure about the nutty buddy, because I didn't have very much sauce in my to go order. However, getting it a second time and getting to order extra sauce, I am a super fan! I can tell why everybody loves it so much. However, the serious star for me was the rainbow roll. Absolutely one of the best sushi rolls I've ever eaten, and this is one of my favorite foods. The only reason I knock it down a star is the service--it was horrendous and actually really dampened my dining experience. We sat at the bar, as we always do, but I wouldn't recommend it here. Maybe they're just too busy? That seems odd to me because honestly, they didn't seem very busy, but we never got a refill of water, we were never asked if we were OK, we were never asked if we needed anything else, we were never asked if our food was OK, my husband was never asked if he wanted another beer... How did I not eat here sooner? Vegan dishes prepared and served the way it should be. Started with the Spicy Mango Roll (delicious) added the Baby Boo Choy (fabulous) and for the main entree had the best Korean BBQ Brisket ever! Wow too good. My family enjoyed dinner here on a Saturday, and though we had a reservation it was not too crowded and we were seated immediately. Our server was very friendly and accommodating about our special requests, eg we wanted to enjoy the sake warm in a more traditional way, and they don't usually did that, so we asked for it to be given in a bowl of hot water and they were able to make it happen! We got the mystic falls sake ($24 for "4 shots") which i enjoyed. The shared plates arrived first--the yakitori skewers ($16) and the spicy salmon tartare ($18, my favorite dish, not very spicy at all). Everyone seemed to enjoy these most out of what we tried. Then the sushi arrived all together; we tried the smoky dragon ($17), spicy mang ($11), and sweet Tree ($11) with the spicy mang being my personal favorite. The roe and caviar are also magically delicious and similar to the actual thing, so I'd give it a try! The portion sizes were smaller than expected, and we still had room for more, so we got the ginger beef dumplings ($11) and the glazed meatballs ($19). The meatballs were on the sweeter side but came with plenty of rice so it filled us up. The dumplings (5) were soft and well seasoned, so also a favorite. My friends and I came here one day after work, and we all absolutely loved it. There were so many delicious options on the menu that it was hard to choose what we wanted. We ended up getting the fried chick'n bao and smoked oyster mushroom bao, which were both so good. For my entree, I got the oshizushi spicy "salmon" roll. It was amazing and tasted so much like salmon... I have no idea how they do it. They even got the smoked flavor perfect. The drinks were also very good. I got the honeydew martini, which was super refreshing and had a tasty flavor.
