The dining room is HUGE and the seating is nicely arranged so it doesn't feel too cramped if there are a lot of people - even though it was pretty quiet when we were there. After reviewing the extensive menu, we chose a few items to start. Everything was presented beautifully and tasted just as good! I could tell there was a lot of care that went into the creation of the plates. We wanted to try so many more things, but we got too full! Extremely mediocre vegan sushi, especially compared to Planta (NY) and Shizen (SF). Sushi rolls were bland, unimaginative, and emphasized fake meat. The non-sushi items (Chicken skewers and Pork Dumplings) were better, but no spectacular flavors. Servers were not attentive or personable, took 30 minutes to get our check. This was a great find. The restaurant choices in NYC are overwhelming, and we have pretty good options back home. So, we took the opportunity to try something different. We're not vegans but due to some allergies, sushi restaurants can be a little stressful when it comes to cross-contamination. Beyond Sushi is an all-vegan restaurant - even when the menu says "salmon" it's some sort of alternative item. So, no-stress sushi was intriguing. We only ordered 3 items and wish we could have tried more Chicken bao (admittedly not sushi) was off the charts good. As a supporter of Vegan places, my latest venture was with Beyond Sushi. As the name suggests, every dish was made out of plants. I went crazy reading their menu. Must-try: Coconut curry soup Afogato Dumplings I just wanted to taste every dish but my fav one was the coconut curry soup!!!! The best!! The soup was thick and took me back to Asia. It is similar to a ramen with noodles and meal-maker that complimented the soup like a chicken. Cant start about the sushi. Loved their variety and I went for the Charred Avocado. Every piece was juicy and saved from eating a raw sushi elsewhere. Pregnancy cravings were hitting hard and the hubby found this spot near our gym and suggested we give it a shot! Lychee, honeydew, and mint ($7): Love!! Not too sweet and very refreshing. Miso Soup ($7): a bit too heavy on the sesame oil for my taste, but otherwise pretty standard miso soup. Fried Chick'n Bao ($16): The "chicken" was shaped like chicken nuggets and has the texture of a medium/hard tofu. I wouldn't say it taste (texture-wise) of chicken, but it's a yummy fried meat-alt nonetheless. Would love to have it doused more in the sauce! Now onto the fun stuff...sushi! We got Rainbow Roll ($16), Zalmon ($10 x 3 sushi pieces), Nori Taco Sampler ($15). The texture of the "fish" was SO spot on. The Zalmon sushi pieces are a bit thin for the amount of rice it's placed on, but it honestly tastes like the real deal. My favorite was the taco sampler which you pretty much get an entire mouthful of just "fish" - so this def knocked my cravings out the ballpark. I asked one of the waiters what the "fish" is made from, and they said tapioca! Black Sesame Avocado Cookie ($12): of course, we couldn't leave without trying their dessert. Best way to end the meal - the cookie was more like a soft cake cooked in a mini castiron topped off with a small scoop of ice cream. This is a great concept, a completely vegan sushi and Asian restaurant. The place has a nice mix of high top tables, larger tables for groups , and bar seating. The space is sleek and modern but cozy and comfortable for casual dining. The server was friendly and helpful with the menu . I tried the Gua boa buns and the spicy jackfruit crab roll. Solid experience. All Vegan menu. Owned by Chef Guy who also owns Willow, Colette, Anixi, Le Basque. I had a glass of sake (nice), the Spicy Crab special roll (excellent - made from tofu and chickpeas - really amazing), the Shoyu Ramen (presentation was great but noodles and broth were meh) and the Taro Root ice cream. The sushi was fantastic. Tasted like an actual roll with crab. The ramen was skimpy on the broth (needs a bigger bowl), the noodles weren't flavorful and the broth taste was a little flat and needed lots of chili sauce. The egg and beef were very good and looked the parts but a basic vegetarian ramen with better noodles and better broth would be welcomed. Go to Ippudo and have their tofu with soy milk broths. Anyway, this is a new item and I'm sure will change over time. Lastly the Taro Root ice cream was good - has a mochi like consistency but was a really tasty flavor with the black sesame seeds. The restaurant doesn't have a lot of one person seating but that's ok: the bar and seats in front are available. When I got there, no host was there to greet, I had to ask the bartender for help. My first waiter was fantastic and had strong, well thought through opinions on the menu but then a second waiter wasn't as knowledgeable but still very friendly. I will definitely come back here despite what seems like a middle of the road review because the sushi I had was really incredible and there are lots of rolls to try. In short terms, not a bad experience but I personally wasn't a big fan and wouldn't come back. As for the atmosphere (I went to the soho location, not sure if it's still open but I couldn't find it on Yelp) and it was very sterile feeling and smelled strongly of cleaning supplies which was kinda weird. It was also super tiny and it didn't really feel like we had a waiter. The food was decent but not anything spectacular by any means. Vegans may enjoy it more. Now, I don't like sushi and this was the best sushi I've had, so there's that. I had the sweet potato roll and I liked the sauce on top. The mushroom dumplings were okay, they looked pretty and appetizing but tasted like they had just been frozen and microwaved. I think vegans who enjoy sushi would like this spot more, but for me it's gets a 3.5/5 read more

A place like this deserves a much better miso soup, especially at $9. Of the rolls, I had the Salmon Avocado and the Spicy Tuna. Were it not for one of them being spicy, I couldn't tell you the difference in taste between the two rolls for the life of me, so it's weird that one could be called 'salmon' and the other 'tuna'. The rolls were tasty, and well formed, and well presented, but when you get two different 'fish' as rolls, you kind of expect there to be some difference between them as far as taste. There used to be a vegan place called Soy and Sake in the west village that had vegan sushi, and each roll there tasted different if it were a different fish. The whole menu here is vegetarian/ vegan friendly so there are options galore. The plating of all the foods is very pretty. The staff are really kind and help with suggestions. I've had far better vegan sushi iterations. Beyond didn't really try that hard. They slathered their mushroom wontons in so much truffle oil that I was over it after the first bite. The ingredient list LOOKED really interesting, but who knows if all of that was in there, because all you can taste is truffle. Also ordered the spicy 'tuna' roll because I wanted to see what faux masago was going to be like. Still can't work out what it was, but it did have the snap. We ordered the tuna tartar for an appetizer, then I ordered the nutty buddy wrap and rainbow roll, while she got the spicy ramen. My one gripe is that the tartar and ramen came out in a decent amount of time, but then my food didn't come out for legitimately almost 25 more min. Seems like the timing of the dishes coming out could have been better organized. While my fiance enjoyed her ramen, when I tried the broth, it was pretty plain without enough depth of flavor except for spice. Beyond sushi has me ready to move to New York, and I'm only partially kidding. I got the lychee soda and it was delicious, not too sweet, and refreshing and flavorful. I also got the charred avocado roll and the grilled chicken bao, with the sauce on the side (because I'm not great with spice). It was phenomenal, perfect flavoring and texture and I wish I could have eaten more. The vibes were perfect, staff were great and attentive. The char adds a lovely flavor to the whole roll, and the jackfruit made for a great vegan filling. The tartare was wild. Beyond Sushi is 100% plant-based, and the food is delicious, even if you're not vegan or vegetarian. I love how creative their rolls and dishes are, and I like this location in particular because of their large dining space. On our last visit, we got both the rainbow roll and the spicy tartare, both of which used "tuna" and "zalmon" that looked just like their fish counterparts. The rainbow roll looked convincingly like one you would find at any sushi spot and was very tasty, but the spicy tartare was probably our favorite part of the entire meal. It was as good as the tuna or salmon tartare from any restaurant, was mixed with a delicious spicy mayo sauce, and came with crunchy taro chips. I hope that never leaves the menu! We also got a lunch special ($15 for two items- a good deal), and enjoyed the five spice chick'n dumplings and the mighty mushroom roll. The Impossible meatballs, which came with a soy and sambal sauce, were a little on the saltier side, but so good, and also really filling since they came with a generous portion of sushi rice. Spicy mang - definitely my favorite roll, I also really like the black rice consistency! Wow! What a find for the vegan (and non-vegan) crowd. This gem manages to create sushi that looks like the real thing and in my opinion tastes better. Lots of the dishes are spicy. And the bao buns and bahn mi are extra spicy but hard to resist and worth the burn! They make their own sodas and I found that the lychee lime spritzer was just the thing to take the edge off the heat. Service is incredibly fast and very friendly. Lovely space too. I absolutely LOVE fish and all fun rolls with stuff like tempura and crab etc. but these rolls were AMAZING, so flavorful, filling, fresh (omg talk about their sweet potato and avocado) and I love their use of black rice! Service was good, food was fast (I ordered the second roll because I wasn't full after my first lol), and everything tasted so clean and fresh. The two rolls I got were BOMB, and it has to be all thanks to Beyond Sushi for introducing me to the world of delicious vegan sushi. Would definitely come back and try more rolls!! read more
