Went here for the first time with my son, girlfriend and her daughter after hearing good things about this place from several people. My son had the cub breakfast plate with eggs and bacon. My girlfriend had the eggs Benedict with potatoes and her daughter had Mac n cheese. I got the country fried steak with potatoes and biscuits and gravy. We also had mimosas that knocked me on my ass after only 2. Our server was really nice and provided great service. But overall the quality and taste of food was excellent. We decided to go to the Black Bear Diner on Sunday for breakfast. We sat at the counter rather than wait for a table because we were hungry. To our surprise, prime rib & eggs were on the breakfast menu. The portion was generous & tasty. My corned beef hash & eggs were delicious and they kept hot coffee coming! Sitting at the counter gives one a real opportunity to see how things really work - almost a behind the scenes peek. The wait staff was friendly & efficient. The cooks seemed to be efficient & knowledgeable. Mariela, the manager, efficiently coordinated her staff with confidence, that let all of us know she cared about our service, by her example. Was expecting more from this place as it was recommended by friends. We were seated pretty fast considering they were busy. Server brought menus right away, water when we requested it. It took awhile for her to get back to take our order of a Cobb Salad and a lunch size chicken fried steak. We waited another 35 minutes and had decided to leave when she came running out with our order. Fine, we sat back down. The sides we chose with the chicken fried steak were potato soup and onion rings. The soup was super bland but the onion rings were fabulous. Best ever. Super salty Cafeteria-like food in a bear themed setting: The conversion of this Marie Callender's into a Black Bear Diner was a natural fit. It's a pleasant setting and the service is excellent. I sampled the country gravy which was so salty I couldn't eat but a tablespoon. And, it just wasn't good, tasting more like something from a cheap package (Dollar Store clearance quality). Hardly anything I'd want to have over a biscuit or anything else. Geewiz guys, can you cut back the salt like 70% and let the FEW people who would want to add more put it on themselves? Isn't that what the salt shakers are on the table for? I usually like trying the really humble dish at a restaurant to gauge the rest of what's coming up menu. I mean, if attention and nuance is noticeable in the simple stuff, it usually bodes well for anything more complicated. Makes sense, eh? I went with the open turkey sandwich with GRAVY on wheat toast with red mashed potatoes. What arrived were 2 slices of toast halved and then layered/staggered one upon the other. 3 business card sized, THIN slices of turkey were on top of ONE of the bread slices and then gravy poured on top. There should have been 3 business card sized slices on EACH half of the FOUR pieces. A generous portion of the mashed potatoes sat next to it on the plate with some minor garnish and cranned berry sauce. At $15.00 and a tip on top, I was disappointed with this meal that consisted of mostly bread and about as much turkey as you'd get in a $3.00 Swanson's turkey TV dinner. And sadly, I preferred the Swanson's version. Here again the gravy was SUPER salty and the portion of turkey was just sad. Getting back to my theory of judging a place by one of their most humble dishes, it didn't look promising. I should mention that the mashed potatoes were excellent but they aren't THE ENTREE. I'll try this place one more time, perhaps a burger, but I'm picky about fries and while being escorted to my table I did get a good glimpse of the fries being served out of the kitchen. The oil looked worn out, the fries were darker in color which usually indicates that they aren't changing it as frequently as they should. That's going to affect the flavor and my puss will go sour. Sadly, after eating food for 58 years, I can just tell by the color of the fries. Lighter color = good fries Darker color = old oil and rancid aftertaste. okay, okay, one visit does not a restaurant make. Seems like others were enjoying their meals around me so perhaps there are better menu items out there? But then again, having tasted the food and finding it hard to believe, I took a CLOSER look at 'those seemingly enjoying their meals' and I noticed: My wing of the restaurant was populated by HUGE 'bear' looking peeps, 'non-compliant diabetic' folks waddling to the tables with great difficulty. They huffed and puffed with their durable medical equipment in tow and seemed readily eager to eat from the trough of massively salty or over sweet delights. It was like holding out a bottle of bourbon to some 'gutter drunk' and asking him if he wanted a shot. All the while I could hear the staff pushing the sweet tea and lemonade... Personally, I'd never have let something overly salty out of my kitchen and if you're not dulling your taste buds out with a bunch of soda and hardcore sugar crap drinks (like the 'bears,') you might more notice it. Both overly salty or sweet food is offensive to me and it always indicates some type of disconnection between the cooking staff and those who will consume the food. It indicates a lack of higher level oversight/caring. If it's coming from a package, I guess there's little they can do about it. Still, it's a cheat and attempts to shortcut the finer senses of the palate while covering up obvious shortcomings of the food. At worst, it shows a disregard for those consuming it, their health or wellbeing. Like some ripoff movie theater tripling the salt levels in their overpriced popcorn so you'll buy a $5.00 soda.... At BBD, I noticed the assault begins even before you open the door with a large poster of their "Famous bear claw for ONLY $5.99." ?? It should come with A1C test strips... Buzz through the sodium levels in this chart and check out that 'humble' biscuit at 1330 mg! That's only ONE small biscuit! Now look up menu and you're in the 4400 mg range. Holy cow this place is trying to kill folks with sodium just so you'll spend more money on some sweet drink or dessert to kill the Salton Sea churning in your mouth! If you love the heavy hand of Morton in your food, you'll love this place. I went for the first time last night to the one on Shaw in Fresno. I ordered the Pesto Turkey sandwich with onion rings. The bacon on the sandwich was thick cut and delicious. The bread was delicious and tasted fresh. Definitely not stale. The onion rings were crunchy but not greasy. They were perfect. When dessert came I was originally disappointed they were out of the strawberry shortcake, but I got over it quick. The bread pudding was THE BEST bread pudding I can remember having. It was warm, gooey, soft, delicious. I would go back just for dessert. Jerry was our server, he was nice, funny, accommodating, genuine, entertaining. The experience at Black Bear Diner was a good one! Once you get past the 40 min wait to be seated everything else is good. I blame the long wait due to the diner being new and many people like myself were eager to see what Black Bear Diner is about. The greeters at the door appeared to be a lil overwhelmed. The physical menu was a lil weak in my opinion. It was a newspaper which threw me off initially. It was deep though. Lots to choose from. I will maintain the server we had was fantastic. She was attentive and made frequent stops to her area which included my table to see if we needed anything. I've gone to a different location a while back ago and wasn't too impressed, but I figured I'd give this one a chance. I ordered the corned beef hash with poached egg, fruit and sourdough bread. The hash was a bit different from what I've tried in the past, but it was delicious. The texture of it was amazing and it was well seasoned. The eggs were perfectly cooked. My other breakfast mates had the 10 oz steak, eggs, fruit/hash browns and a biscuit/toast. I tried the steak and I quickly wished I had ordered that instead of my dish. This is one of the few times that when a steak is ordered medium, it is cooked to a medium! It was seasoned fantastically and it was amazing!!! Will try the next times. Had I known that they were doing in door service, I would never ever did a large take out order. As a high risk person, seeing someone coming in and getting seated almost caused me to have a panic attack. I love BBD, but even if you do in door to CDC standards, you still are running the risk of transmission. Chicken fried steak with a side of death is not a good look. Bugs in my condiment shaker and my service was really really poor. It was a very disappointing experience. After waitress showing it to her manager she returns with it saying they refilled it with new salt. The problem with that was that there were still black particles which I showed the kitchen manager while checking out. He said it must of been the inside of the shaker but the black particles were loose mixed into the white of the salt not sticking to the inside of the glass. I had eaten fries and eggs with that salt before noticing the bugs and felt mentally sick afterwards almost throwing up my food. Grossed out from the experience. Our service with our waitress started out good but turned for the worst after addressing the bug issue. Felt like we were being avoided by our waitress and seemed as if she was intentionally staying away from our table. We have eaten at a lot of BBD, and in the past enjoyed the Fresno BBD. Last night however was bad. we ordered the fried chicken. Well so much for generous portions. The cup of soup was half full. The tomatoes on my husbands salad were tiny, sbout the size of a cranberry. The waiter apologized and informed us new management has gotten strict and insisted a cup of soup was now one small ladle in the bowl. Really? An under half filled bowl? How about adding water? It is soup after all. The creamy grits..were not creamy by any stretch of the imagination. More like yesterday's grits that have been in fridge without a lid. Dry and unappetizing lump of grits.. and of course this was a generous portion, probably glad another person ordered the grits even though they had been sitting around for days? Terrible. The fried chicken used to be our favorite food there. It used to be perfectly fried, with crispy skin. The chicken last night was an overly breaded greasy tasting bird. Not the enjoyable chicken we have become used to. Needless to say, we will not be visiting the Fresno BBD anytime in the near or far future. Happily we do know there are other BBD who do manage to get it right, so will just wait until we are out of town to enjoy what BBD has to offer, with the knowledge that some of them get it right. read more

Black Bear dinner The ambiance resembles camping in the forest....with black bears everywhere carved out of wood. I do like the fire place they have in the waiting area, it looks warm and cozy! I had the rib eye it was good the cooks cooked it to the right temperature, in my case that was medium. All though the cut of the steak was thinner than I'm use to, it still was good. It came with mash potatoes, there were good as well. The veggies that the rib eye came with were string beans with bacon delicious! The service was prompt and polite (My server: Zay). You will be half way through your meal, and then your pancakes or toast comes. Good luck on a refill. They will walk by your empty glass and wont even ask if you want refills. Hence the reason i stop getting soda or lemonades. I guess as these restaurants get more and more popular. The food quality and portions go down. Consistency is key. And once things aren't consistent. I no longer will frequent that place. Chance after chance and more and more disappointments. Its a few mom and pops that are better quality and cheaper.
