A friend recommended this place and it seemed cute. Took a group of four gals to breakfast. The services started out okay but quickly went from okay to bad. One of my friends noticed she had a hair in her sausage. We grabbed the attention of what appeared to be a manager and told him about it. We were offered no apology and he simply said, "I'll get you another one." Our server then went to the kitchen and proceeded to take the remainder of my friend's uneaten food and put it all on a new plate with what we assumed included new sausage sans hair. Again, no apology or anything such as a discount was ever offered. With so many wonderful food options in Seal Beach, I do not see any reason to return here. Word to the wise, skip it. read more

This place has a great asthetic, but unfortunately the cooking is mediocre. Ordered the playground with bacon and eggs over easy. Waffle was very dry and cold. Yolk was broken in my eggs and they were cold and undercooked. Bacon was okay. Overall the best part of the meal was coffee. Came for Father's Day today. Wasn't busy got sat right away. Our waitress was in a hurry to take our order immediately but we needed to look at the menu. When she came back with the water we placed our order. 3/4 orders came out in a timely manner. Then we proceeded to watch 8 meals go out while we waited for the last meal. Waitress acted like it wasn't a big deal and told us the kitchen was just busy. The last meal finally came and it became obvious what happened, she didn't place the order for the steak melt and they had to "rush"(cus there was no rush). It was only warm, soggy as if it had been sitting there for 10 min, and the grilled onions were warmed not grilled(obv cus they had to rush the order). So one of us got to eat while the others were done, and when we spoke to the manager he didn't care at all. The food was tasty but the service is atrocious and I don't appreciate being lied to, if you messed up, just own it and tell me you forgot to send the order. read more

My wife took me for a late breakfast today and brought me here. My first time ever. I have to say i was impressed. The food was delicious and the service was outstanding. My wife ordered the heuvos rancheros which were really, really good. I ordered the french toast royal which had blueberry cream cheese on it, wow! It was great. We have always liked coming here, but a few days ago we went for lunch & although there is the sign on the wall demanding that ALL guests wear masks as required - the family in front of us did not & were seated by the manager. When I mentioned this to him - he told me that he had not noticed. However, we noticed that during our lunch, he kept seating people not wearing masks. Why bother putting up a sign if you are going to disregard it, with no regard to the health crisis? We have been to other restaurants where we have had our temperatures taken & these are the restaurants that we are going to frequent. Blackboard Bistro will not be on that list. read more

We come here about once a month. This place is always fresh and delicious. We always get seated quickly and the service is excellent. I usually order an omelet and one pancake. I have never finished the entire meal as the hash browns fill half the plate and are delicious. The pancake fills the plate and is amazing. Always leave satisfied and the prices are very reasonable. Come for the blueberry pancakes, but stay for the killer Mexicali scramble!!! Located on PCH in the Main Street neighborhood of SB, this charming little restaurant was the TOP CHOICE for tasty American breakfast food with a zesty Mexican flair! Although there was a 15 minute wait, most popular restaurants during breakfast/brunch rush will have a minimum 15 minute lag time, so I really wasn't complaining. Luckily, there was plenty of parking in the back and a nice public park as well for you to walk your food off if you're so inclined. With that said, my wait wasn't too long, and before I knew it, I was seated in a comfy booth right by the patio! My server was exceptionally pleasant and friendly, which made my first experience all the more memorable! As fellow Yelper MiYun C recommended, I went with the tempting Mexicali Scrambler and the famous blueberry pancakes for 1.25 more (instead of toast, of course). The Mexicali scramble was simply Uhmazing!!! Loaded with heaping chunks of well seasoned chorizo, savory Ortega chilis, juicy tomatoes, fresh green onions, loads of gooey cheese, and topped with a dollop of cool sour cream and thick slices of fresh, buttery avocado...it was absolutely scrum-diddly-umptious!!! Honestly, I savored every decadent bite! It was really that good! I also tried theYelper recommended Chili Cheese Omelet, and it tasted just like how it sounded, which was a very good thing! The dish was pretty much comprised of a large fluffy omelet topped with piles of chunky house made chili and loads of melty cheese! Yum! Big flavors and a big belly afterwards!!! Frankly, I was down for the count after the last bite of the chili cheese omelet, but I didn't have the heart to let the blueberry pancakes go to waste! So, I topped everything off with a few bites of their iconic blueberry flapjacks and, I must admit, the pancakes tasted quite fresh, fluffy and with a hint of blueberry flavor, it hit the spot! Other notables were the tasty homemade jams, namely the blueberry and raspberry jams! Perfectly sweet with just the right amount of lip smacking tartness...but do yourself a favor and skip the strawberry jam, it was an absolute snooze. Btw, the orange juice was fresh squeezed and all the tables came with international delight creamers in various flavors for coffee if you decided to have a cup of Joe with your breakfast. Overall, an outstanding first experience at the Blackboard Bistro in terms of food, service and value! The location of this restaurant used to be an elementary school and then it was Russell's (which I miss) and now is Blackboard Bistro. Seems like all the reviews for Yelp on this place are for breakfast mostly. Dropped in for dinner and was pleased to find they have a really large menu with lots of sandwiches, soups, salads and dinner entrees to choose from. There is a blackboard in the back of restaurant with daily specials. I love chicken fried steak so I chose the country fried steak with homemade country gravy. The entree came with mashed potatoes and steamed veggies and a choice of soup or salad. The salad that came with the entree was good and pretty big for a side salad. The country fried steak and gravy were really good with a nice peppery flavor to the homemade gravy. Bf got the sirloin steak sandwich with fries which he really enjoyed. Very large piece of steak in this sandwich. I would have liked to have tried some dessert, but I was very full. Portions are very generous here and the service friendly. With all the raves about breakfast here, I definitely want to come back to try the blueberry pancakes. :) read more

Horrible customer service. We went for Sunday breakfast and the food was ok but the service. We had to wait a long time for our waiter to even take our order, then having to waive him down for a coffee refill since there was never an offer, and then wait forever for our check to arrive, but the kicker was being asked to leave (right after paying the bill) due to a party of 10 waiting to be sat. The table next to us was also asked to leave. Our plates had barely been cleared! So much for having a nice relaxing Sunday breakfast. I will NEVER go back and I wish I could re-do the 20% tip I left. I have a different tip in mind. read more

Perks of being in SoCal =) BLUEBERRY PANCAKES Get these...they are devine. Three fluffy huge pancakes, blueberries filled inside the pancake center, the whole thing moist. I don't even like pancakes that much and I polished off two. These are the best I've had yet. I exchanged the last one for some French Toast. FRENCH TOAST I was not a fan of this. It wasn't as moist, and was actually bland. Dunked it in maple syrup, but not impressed. EGGS BENEDICT Too much hollandaise sauce. The eggs benedict itself is quite good, no need to overdo it. COFFEE Solid. Cream comes in different flavors [hazelnut, vanilla, half n half]. Good coffee that is constantly refilled. CAPPUCCINO Not worth the order. Get regular coffee instead. It's powder, the kind my mum buys so we kids can make it at home. SERVICE on point. Servers are super nice and got me tons of cream for my coffee, and tons of butter for my pancakes. read more

Cracks are Whack. I went with a few other yelpers after kayaking around sunset beach...and we were greeted by the hariest, gnarliest butt crack around. Food then was simply unappealing. Although my phone got a great shot of the crack. Yes, it's high school. But the guy's a tool for not realizing that the 'air back there' isn't due to air conditioning. Food-so so, service-so so. I have been Blackboard Bistro several times years ago, but recently rediscovered their breakfast last weekend. We came in on a Sunday morning. It was raining so it wasn't too crowded and we were seated right away at the counter. I went with the breakfast sandwich and hash browns. The portions are pretty big and the sandwich was excellent. The hash browns were bleh and my wife had ordered the seasoned potatoes which were much better. A few negatives however....they didn't appear to give you an option for hash browns or potatoes. They automatically gave you hash browns unless you specifically ask for the potatoes. This was not mentioned on the menu either. Also service was a bit slacking on this day, I typically don't enjoy watching my food sit underneath the warmer for 5 minutes before someone finally delivers it to us. Sitting at the counter, you'd think this would be easy. But the big positive is that they serve Mimosa's which is nice since most of the better breakfast places don't serve alcohol. read more

This is my Saturday great after boot camp. Yes I work out so I can dance with my bacon after. This place had bomb blueberry pancakes. They are huge and fruity and the strip and butter are delectable. They have amazing omelettes and skillets. I recently had the Santa fe skillet and it's bomb. The bacon is my fav here. The turkey hash is also great as is the mexicali scramble. It's alright. I had the French toast because someone raved about it. Just tastes and looks homemade. Is that what they're going for? I was expecting something extraordinary. I went with my mom who's a picky eater. She puts Tabasco on everything if it tastes like shit. She ordered the California Benedict and I was surprised that she didn't put one drop in there. Hence, it probably tasted good. (I'm allergic to egg yolks so I can't tell you myself if it was good or not). We were seated quickly at the bay window seating next to the front of the restaurant. I ordered the Protein Omelet and added Avocado. Also ordered a side of Spinach - which was plentiful but bland. The omelet, as is with most places, over-cooked, but I'm used to it as most places do overcook the omelets they offer. My friends ordered the Eggs Benedict and we happy w their choices. I did order the home fries "well done" and that did not happen. The grapefruit juice was fresh! If you like grapefruit juice...you'll did this. All-in-all a good brunch! This place is a true neighborhood gem! It can be pretty busy at times so I suggest arriving early or after 10am. Service was alright and they were pretty attentive to our needs. I've been here at least 4 times with some of my friends and everyone agrees that this place serves up a great breakfast. Their breakfast portions are pretty generous so you might end up bringing some food home and warming it up the next morning before you head to work. read more

Blackboard bistro.. what can I say. I love breakfast & am an advent lover of the breakfast burrito @ FV's Alerto's. BBB's breakfast burrito is WAY BETTER. It's just amazing! I think it's the crispy hash browns inside that set it apart from all other breakfast burritos. I've also had their turkey burger (just the way it used to be - lettuce, pickle, thousand island dressing), artichoke dip, spinach & cheese omelette, veggie omellete, taco salad, among other things, and they've all been satisfying. My marine boyfriend & I are frequent guests, and we always have leftovers in hand afterward (portions are plentiful! & generally keeps well - yayy lunch!) The service is usually pretty good. I've only had a bad experience once when one of the waitresses was on a bad one and seemed as though she really hated her job (& the customers)... other than that the servers are always friendly & helpful. My coffee cup is never empty :) GREAT place for breakfast. Request a table on the patio on a sunny day & go for a stroll down Seal Beach's Main St afterward. The outdoor ambiance on a gently sunny Saturday morning is not to be missed. We enjoyed a leisurely breakfast of California Benedict with a side of fresh fruit and Playground Special with French toast royal. The Benedict was delicious: a generous portion of perfectly ripe avocado, four slices of crisp bacon, nicely toasted English muffin, tasty tomato and expertly poached egg (no runny white but creamy yolk) with fresh, ripe fruit. The Playground Special was equally as scrumptious, although hubby said would have been better with more fresh blueberries. They serve Farmer Brothers coffee, which was smooth and mild with very low acidity and pleasant aftertaste. We found a new favorite for breakfast! read more

Finally tried this restaurant. Sweet decor great outside space. Ordered a burger with fries. (San Francisco burger). Meat was high quality, bread was grilled to perfection. Reason for 4 stars, you ask? Burger only covered 1/3 of bread and the fries were 'pre-fab' and mushy- not fresh. A shame to cut these corners when the rest was so good. Maybe I'll try for breakfast someday. the Benedict looked tasty. Suggestions to owner- spend the time, make fresh cut fries that are fresh, not mushy. And make the burger fit the bread. Blackboard Bistro Does Breakfast Right! Even with the change in ownership the food is still the same consistency and the same great quality. I use to eat here once a week but not so much anymore, just busy I guess. I will never ever go on a Sunday morning again; the wait is just insane. Saturday mornings are really busy too. I now go on a weekday morning when I can. The staff is so unbelievable friendly. Since they opened I have never had a problem with any of the wait staff. It has always been a great experience. The pancakes are the best I have ever had and super large. The French Toast is yummy. The eggs are just right with very little grease. Sourdough toast is awesome. I could go on and on about the breakfast. Lunch and dinner however is a different story. I would say it is just alright. I have not gone to lunch or dinner here in about two years. read more
