Last Sunday, my family asked me to meet them at one local Denny's for breakfast. Okay, I thought, just another routine meal at a good American standby, and don't get me wrong, Denny's is a good reliable place to get a meal no matter where you find yourself. When I get there, I find there is a half hour wait; my family doesn't mind the queue, but being time constricted because the AZ Cardinals kick off was two hours away, I wanted to get us seated ASAP. Dad said he really wanted some grits, and I've never known Denny's to serve them. Only place I knew that did was a good local hang-out called the Bread & Butter Cafe so I suggested we go there instead. We get there and they have us seated in less than ten mins, making sure to make proper accommodation for my Dad who is wheelchair bound. Menus are tableside and we are served coffee right away, except for an iced tea for my brother, as he's not a coffee fan. Mom orders two eggs with bacon, a side of biscuits and gravy, and home fries, my brother has the country-fried chicken with all the fixins, Dad orders a regular biscuits and gravy with a side of bacon, and I have a short stack of hot cakes with bacon and eggs on the side, sunnyside up. Dad and I also have a side of grits, our hunt for grits has proven victorious. Cakes are HUGE! I mean plate-sized HUGE, complete with butter and syrup; a hotcake is easily ruined, either too underdone or overcooked into large thick wafers. These cakes are fluffy to the touch, so much in fact I only need a fork to cut into mine. What stood out to me the most was the bacon; some hash joints serve half raw bacon that's limp and without crisp, others have bacon that's just plain burnt. Bread & Butter's bacon are large thick slices that are crisp with a real snap, which is complemented with my sunnyside up eggs. The grits are smooth and plentifully hot, I like mine with some salt and butter, which our server was pleased to provide extra butter for my own use. I couldn't finish my hot cakes, they're served in such generous portion; my Dad offers to finish off my remaining cakes, he boasts about them as much as I do. My family's meals are equally appealing, since I didn't sample any of their wares, they can write their own reviews but I certainly have ideas what to order for my next visit. My family was pleased with our change of venue and that we opted for a local breakfast joint, one that has been at its current location for well over three decades now. I highly recommend you have your next breakfast at this local Tucson institution the next time you're looking for a nice meal after church, before work, or if you just feel like some good comfort food. read more

The food was ahhhmazing!! I had corn beef hash and eggs and potatoes it was a big helping! I didn't finish it all and I'm so full! The staff is so so friendly and made me feel like I've been here a million times. They have a lot of "regulars" who come in and they know their names and ask about your life. This restaurant is riding on its former reputation for serving a good, home cooked meal. Unfortunately since it is under new ownership, you can't really find that same quality or price. The portion sizes are smaller, such as the chicken fried chicken which used to be 2-3 times the size that it is now. The eggs even taste like water compared to what they used to. Of course the prices went way up, even before inflation really hit. If you loved Bread and Butter before the pandemic, you won't find that same establishment these days. read more

What an awesome place. It was perfect for our party of 13!! We sat a giant table, the waitress was wonderful and attentive. My son had the Hot Chocolate and it was so rich and yummy. High class hospitality with a warm welcome as soon as you open the door as you seat yourself. Great prices and a good sized menu, nothing that will overwhelm you. Grabbed some great biscuits and gravy in Tucson Arizona. Some of the social sites mentioned Bread and Butter café. Hearty portion, fresh biscuits, I ordered a side of sausage patties to just add a little bit more to the mix. Overall a good meal. I also ordered a piece of homemade chocolate pie because they had homemade chocolate pie. It was excellent. Service was a five star. And the bathrooms were spotless. read more

I've driven past this place a hundred times and always promised myself I'd give it a try. Well, the Fates decided today would be the day, so JB & I hopped in my trusty truck and off we went for a Sunday brunch. We arrived around11:00 and after a short wait, were seated. The menu is expansive, and that was lovely. We got our drinks promptly and made our food choices. And here's where things went pear-shaped.... So JB wanted biscuits and gravy. But lo and behold! they're out of biscuits and gravy. How in the name of all that is holy can a restaurant run out of a breakfast staple?? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that we were in a restaurant, with a fully functional kitchen. How on earth can you not make MORE Biscuits & gravy?? On a Sunday?? At the brunch hour?? To add insult to injury, I requested that I have MY eggs in MY eggs Benedict fried rather than poached (I have issues with snotty eggs and undercooked eggs and salmonella poisoning). But oh no!....can't have a substituted egg preparation because the OWNER is going to dictate how I eat MY eggs. Meanwhile, they even offered a Florentine option. But all the gods forbid I have a fried egg instead of a poached egg. It's not like I was asking to have lobster Thermidor substituted for hollandaise. The final straw, we just decided to leave and the server was reporting our misdeeds to the manager/hostess before we could even get out the door. Yeah....never coming back here. I like mom & pop restaurants. I wanted to try Italian for a change so I went to Dolce Vita as mom and pop it fits the bill. But the food and service is a zero. For the best mom and pop Bread And Butter on 22nd is the best in town. After your first visit is over you are part of the family. Service is great it's not huge so you won't get lost in the crowd. Food is constantly the same. You come in today and the food is delicious. You come in tomorrow and the food is still delicious. The service is awesome and fast. They cook food your way. read more

What a great place! The diner was crowded at the height of Sunday brunch time, but we were seated right away. Everyone, from manager to waitress to other staff, was attentive and sincerely friendly. The menu offered tons of great options. And the food was excellent. The green chili and cheese omelet was wonderful, as was the cooked-to-perfection corned beef hash. We had one issue with fried eggs needing a bit more time on the griddle, and the waitress (Shasta) was extra accommodating. She brought the plate back with perfectly cooked eggs, and a sweet smile. Kudos to her and the cooks. We're from out of town, but if we return to Tucson we know where we'll be enjoying Sunday brunch! read more

Bread-and-Butter Cafe is great. I've been going there for a few years now and it's amazing I had even though I like my eggs over medium never and my eggs over cooked. They have generous portions, and their pies are a must. Your feelings are excellent and there's just the right amount of crust, too many restaurants I noted in Tucson it crushed his way too thick. The staff is friendly, fast, and inviting. Even those bus tables keep an eye and make sure customers don't need anything. Is a prime example why people should go to local restaurants and not chain restaurants that seems to be so impersonal nowadays. read more

Traveling through Tucson this week, and on my last day I decided to go get some breakfast before heading To the airport. This place was exactly what I was looking for. A perfect little diner full of locals enjoying their coffee and diner breakfast. I got the green chili and cheese omelette with the home fries and sourdough toast. The coffee is horrible but it's exactly what I would expect from this type of place and so I drink it with a smile on my face. The waitress didn't let me take three sips from my cup without refilling it. There was even some homeless guy passed out on the bench right next to the front door which some might be offended by but I felt added to the ambience. Loved it! read more

bread and butter cafe lives up to its reputation. if you're looking for a straight-up, no-frills greasy spoon diner... this is your place. i went for breakfast on a friday morning and the place was full. even with being full i was able to be seated quickly. my server looked like the type of lady that calls everyone, "honey." they had the classic breakfast options (pancakes, french toast, eggs benedict...) but they also have a number of mexican options as well. i ordered the country fried steak, sunny side up eggs, extra cripy hashbrowns and an english muffin. the food came out quickly and was tasty. i was hoping to be able to hang out a while and get some work done, but more people kept coming in so i felt like after i finished eating i needed to get going. overall this is a great place. it's falls above bobo's, but below bisbee breakfast club. so if you want some food like you're grandma would make this is your spot. read more

What a joy to walk into a bustling breakfast place again. Not bustling with hipsters, but with down to earth folks wanting good food for a good price in an atmosphere of positivity and happiness. The manager greeted me at the door. After told him this was my first time at Bread & Butter we talked about Hollandaise and all things Benedict, they are his favorite. I like a good bennie too but not that morning. He was kind and attentive and have me a taste of their hollandaise. Then the server came over, all smiles. I looked around and really everyone was smiling from the busser to the customers. I ordered simply, an egg over medium and an of bacon, but with 2 pieces of bacon and a sausage pattie also medium. As I was waiting for my order I noticed some pieces of art go by in the form of pie and the most beautiful cinnamon roll I've ever seen. The food I got was perfection. This is your typical local diner food - nothing fancy. I had the biscuits and gravy. The biscuits were very good, tender too and the gravy was flavorful. My mom had ordered the French toast and while she said it had good flavor, it was served so cold that her butter did not melt whatsoever so that was a bummer especially when you pour ice cold syrup on it. :-( The service was fast and the staff were friendly.
