I visited Brickway for brunch on the recommendation of fellow yelpers. The place was not bad; but not fabulous either. Despite the ominous warnings of long lines, I got there about 9:30 a.m. on a Sunday and was seated immediately. I was alone and got a great window seat. I had the Kalifornia omelet with avocado, goat cheese and tomatoes, a side of home fries and wheat toast. The omelet and home fries were really good. I also got a single buttermilk pancake. I liked the fact that you could order one pancake, as many brunch spots don't seem to offer that option. The pancake wasn't very tasty, though. It was dry and the consistency was off. The coffee was good enough and I was offered a refill without asking for it. I felt a bit rushed, though, as my waitress put my check down on the table while I was still eating. I was in Providence for the day and walked by around noon on a Sunday. This place seemed overcrowded, but the hostess promised the wait would only be 15 minutes. To my surprise, she wasn't lying and the many groups ahead of me were magically seated and my group had a table in the 15 minutes they promised. Major Pro: The short wait time was incredibly impressive. However, the trade-off is that everyone is crammed into the main seating area. There is very little space between you table and the one next to you. I ordered a benedict and others in my group ordered omelettes. The omelettes appeared to be a good deal for the amount of food you receive. My benedict was nothing special, probably something I probably could've made better myself. My trip here served its purpose of being a place decent place to sit down for brunch. The food and experience isn't especially spectacular, but it's a very nice local place that will ensure that you'll have a place to sit! read more

Brickway is this place that is very popular with the brown crowd for its classic food and large portions. This popularity leads to long lines, which adds to the appeal for many, but this is one place that is not worth the wait. I have been here a number of times with friends that could not be talked into better options, and despite the fact I live within walking distance, I would willingly drive elsewhere than have breakfast here. It is not that it is horrible, but you just leave feeling the calories and money could have been spent elsewhere in a better way. The service is always pretty decent despite the mayhem and the coffee is above average. I have tried omellettes, strawberry pancakes (my last visit), and french toast and found nothing to be a true standout. To me this place is the epitome of 3 stars. I wouldnt recommend it but I wouldnt try to dissuade someone from going, and will even go myself if others insists (though I do hate waiting in line for the place). read more

We happened upon Brickway On Wickenden by chance on a Sunday , about late morning, and although it was a little crowded and small it was worth the wait. The eggs were surprisingly delicious (you think, how can eggs really vary too much-but they do) homefries were typical potatoey, slightly greasy fare and just what I was in the mood for. French toast was delicious (I love it when restaurants throw a little powder on top!) and service was quick and friendly. Nothing phenomenal, but I'd say it's a step above your average breakfast place. Did I mention how good the eggs were? Brickway is my brunch go-to. I know that there will always be a wait, but the owner is ruthlessly efficient at getting people in and fed and on their way, and he never seems in a bad mood. Last time we were there, he was away from the front and another server took our party name. I guess it failed to make it into the book because we stood there and waited... and waited. Finally, when two girls who had come in after us were seated, we asked him why we had been passed over. He looked in the book, we weren't there, and he immediately made a space for us to sit, all while apologizing profusely. Every meal I've had there has been excellent. Service is always speedy and polite. They have interesting specials, but the regular menu is robust enough to keep you coming back for more. Plenty of options. Cute decor--very light and airy. What else to say about this place? The only complaint I have is the wait, but they're pretty good at predicting how long it will be, so you can go for a walk around the block instead of cramming into the entryway. read more

What a great breakfast joint! Brickway is located right next to Brown University, and caters to the students bringing their families out to brunch while visiting. This is a very small place, only about 15 tables. Expect to wait, but not for long. There seems to be a good flow to this place: you wait, you eat, you leave. It's great. The food is amazing. I couldn't decide: sweet vs. savory, so I got both. I had a Kaliforina Omelet with tomatoes, avocado and goat cheese. On the side, I had a pancake. After ordering, I noticed some awesome specials chalked out on some boards on the wall, including: a veggie fritatta with jalepenos, black beans, artichokes, and spinach, and a candy store pancake stack that had a variety of chocolate goodies in it. Wish I would have seen that before ordering, but was not disappointed with what I got. It was very, very good. The food is ample, and yummers, the price is right, and the coffee tastes good - it's not colored water. Definitely check this place out while visiting Providence. read more

This place has been on my list for a while and I finally made it here last Sunday for brunch. Even though it was crowded (4th of July weekend) we were seated right away. The staff is friendly and the food is solidly good. I had the veggie egg sandwich and was pleasantly surprised that something healthy could taste so good! And definitely get the hash browns as a side, they are some of the best I've ever eaten! The decor is fun and the tables remind me of eating in a 1950's diner. One warning though, it's VERY tight inside, and tables are practically on top of each other. I give kudos to the waitstaff for navigating the craziness! Brickway is a cute little place, tucked beneath some trees along Wickenden street. Inside there is a lot of look at, despite it being a small space. Overall, it was a good experience, but nothing amazing. Our server was rather nice, although all of the waitstaff were wearing black tops (most of them tanks) and bras were showing, which is just unprofessional no matter where you go. But anyways, she was nice, and my coffee was always topped off. The food was pretty good -- a little bit above standard breakfast food. I ordered the veggie sandwich with egg beaters (essentially, an egg sandwich with avocado and onion). They certainly didn't go light on the avocado. My mom had the heuvos rancheros and enjoyed them -- but again, rather standard. The prices were a bit high for breakfast (we spent the same for breakfast that we did for dinner the night before). I really enjoyed my breakfast here this morning. There was a bit of a wait for a table, but that is expected on a Saturday morning in a college area. The service was fast and friendly, and were easy to flag down if you needed something. I had the banana pancakes, which were fluffy and delicious, with a side of decent hash. I tried some of my boyfriend's homefries as well, which were very good, and a nice break from the usual Italian seasoned ones you get elsewhere. I always drink black coffee with breakfast, although most breakfast places' are intolerably terrible and can't go without sugar. I was able to drink theirs no problem, but it was nothing special. I had a horrible experience the first time I ate here. The emo waitress spilled an overflowing hot chocolate all over me and seemed irritated that I was upset. That being said, I was pregnant and probably a bit emo myself. It was at least 2 years before we came here again and it's not bad. Do NOT order the breakfast burrito though. An eclectic little spot with a vibe where street art meets diner. The interior is decorated in really cool, street art style murals that are very colorful and fun. The tables and chairs, however, are more diner- like. Expect to wait quite a while for a table, especially on weekends, as this place is very small with just one room of seating. The highlight of the menu items I sampled was the grilled blueberry muffin. This was really delicious and flavorful, although perhaps not the most gourmet muffin. I also had the California omelette with tomatoes, avocado and goat cheese. This was substantial with a good amount of all the ingredients. However, I got the impression that they may not have been using fresh eggs, but rather an egg beaters style batter. The rye toast was excellent. I did not really care for the hash browns which had a weird, artificial taste to them. The drip coffee was decent. Our waitress was very efficient. The main thing that detracted from the experience was that we were seated at a table in the middle of the floor, so no walls buffered us on either side. People were constantly walking by very close to us and a couple people bumped our chairs and the stuff we had placed on the floor. Also, there was a large party near us with kids and it was just very loud with so many people in the space. Sometimes we had to raise our voices just to have a conversation, which is not something I expect at breakfast. The food is certainly decent enough, especially considering the reasonable prices, but the cramped and loud atmosphere is definitely a detracting point. Couple things to know about Brickway- If you go on the weekend for brunch, be prepared to wait for a table. Once seated, you will have minimal room to move your chair. If you go during the week it's a completely different story. Slower pace, fewer customers and not as noisy as the weekend crowd. My out of town guests always love Brickway whether they order the pumpkin pancakes or one of the special omelets. BTW, the omelets here are more like wraps so that the egg is the "bread". Not super fluffy but able to fit ton of tasty fillings. I particularly enjoy the various eggs benedict concoctions- currently loving the Cajun benedict with turkey, avocado, bacon and cajun hollandaise. It's kind of healthy with the avocado and turkey, right? You can count on massive portions and speedy service (even on the weekends). Seriously, so much goodness with this place! read more

This place is super cute but I literally could smell the hair of the person behind me I was so close to them + I was literally locked in my two person table because of the table flap. Holy claustrophobia!! The decor is super colorful + intensely fabulous. But thats how they roll at the brick way. Bright + tight. Hostess was friendly + coffee came out fast! They can even seat groups of 5 in that narrow space- amazing! I got the breakfast sandwich with avocado with a side of home fries-- was good but portions were kinda dinky. My friend got the omelet and that was pretty good size. Our total bill was $20. Eh... a little over priced for 2 coffies, an omelet and a sandwich but not awful. The wait staff is fast and efficient, but can border on rushing, since they can get super busy and want to turn the tables over. Prices are not cheap, but not outrageous either. Expect to part with ~$20 for breakfast for two. If you are old like me, you will be up early so go there at like 7:30 on a Sunday morning and you won't have to wait. As a Brown U student who loves breakfast food, I love this place! The food is amazing and cheap. Also, the atmosphere is very much alive. When my friends came to visit me, I made sure to take them here. The only downside is that it can get pretty busy during the weekends and the service is not that fast. My advice, for the best experience at Brickway, go there on a weekday. If you can't make it on a weekday, go at 9AM or 2PM, Brickway closes at 3PM. read more

The trick to Brickway is knowing what to order. I highly recommend coming a couple times and trying a variety of items before making a decision as to whether or not to come back again. For me, the best menu item is the french toast with strawberries. The French toast is not overly buttery, in no way soggy, and is not covered in sugar. The fruit is wonderfully fresh and they don't skimp on the strawberries. Definitely get at least two slices. Also the fruit cup comes with pear slices, grapes, honeydew, and pineapple (very very fresh). The gentleman at the door in charge of seating everyone was incredibly friendly and service oriented. I really appreciated his speed and his professional manner. Note: As very busy, not the place to sit and chat. Best to eat, pay, and move on. Prepare for about a 20 to 30 minutes wait for Sunday brunch if your party is greater than 2 people. read more

My girlfriend and I left feeling solidly underwhelmed by our entire dining experience at Brickway. They receive two stars because their food wasn't inedible, although it could've been much better. Not sure why people rave about the homefries -- they were mushy and had the same too-much-butter taste as the toast. Upon walking up to the hostess stand and being instructed to sit at the table by the window we made our way over, however, not without having to squeeze our bodies between already-seated tables of guests eating their meals. All the reviews you'll see on here commenting on their service aren't lying; the service was bad from start to finish. We felt rushed through our whole meal, so much so that neither of us were able to finish our coffee that's only worth the price if you get a refill (that we were never offered). We overheard the owner telling a woman at the table behind us that she needed to move so they could use the table she was at for a bigger party. My girlfriend and I got our food less than ten minutes after we ordered it -- a product of the staff not wanting their guests to wait too long for the food, I'm sure, although it made us feel rushed, as did getting the ticket before we had a chance to finish our food. A good place if you're in a hurry; a bad place if you actually want to sit down and enjoy your meal. Will look for better breakfast places in the area before we think about returning here. read more

Brickway on Wickenden, I hoped for so much more. The bestie and I went here for a super-late breakfast one weekday. Both of us were really hungry, so we shouldn't have been hard to please. I ordered basic eggs, homefries, toast, she ordered the pancakes. The pancakes tasted like boxed-mix-who-must-not-be-named, the sunnyside up eggs had that bad eggy taste, the scrambled eggs were rubbery, the homefries were tasteless, and the coffee was weak. Neither of us finished. It may have been a fluke day, or they were getting ready to close, but still -- two hungry people ordering basic food should not have been hard to please. I hear that the benedicts and pumped-up pancakes rock your socks. Maybe, but I won't be returning to find out for myself -- there are way too many other places I'd like go to first. read more

I give this place 1 star and probably wont come back. Our server was not friendly at all and just cold and had an attitude like she didnt want to serve us. Her name was Rita or something that begins with a R. She did not get a tip from me. Three of us ordered homes fries at my table. She brought out two of them then later brought one which looked different from ours. When asked she basically said its because this one is fresher and ours have been sitting there in the kitchen. So basically it was old food that has been waiting there for a while. That turned me off. Wow. I ordered the 2x4 which was pancakes, egg, bacon and sausage. The pancake was the only thing that was good. But very poor customer service and because of that i am not planning to come back. read more

I can't believe I haven't reviewed the Brickway yet. In all my years of living Providence, I'd always heard about the Brickway. I finally got my butt over there last year or so, and I visit often. It definitely lives up to the hype of being good and not too expensive. Right across the street from Sakura on Wickenden St, the Brickway is brightly colored with a small alley walkway leading up to the entrance. In the summer time, they have a few tables set up outside on the sidewalk. It's great to have that option when the temperature is warm with a mild breeze. On the weekend, don't get here too late or you're bound to find a line, but I've never waited more than 20 minutes for a 2 top. Once inside, it's a little tight, but I never feel like I'm on TOP of anyone or their conversation. The waitresses are very friendly, attentive, and personable. There isn't one particular thing I order on the menu. It's usually just what I am feeling at the moment. But if you're stumped by all the delectable options, peel your eyes away from the menu for one second and look at the walls. There are specials usually written on the little chalkboards which blend into the decor/exposed brick. If you're a brunch fan, the Brickway is a must try! read more

Expect a long wait unless you get there RIGHT as they open. The staff is friendly and quick, and they do their best to make sure you are satisfied. But, it's an "intimate" dining experience, in that they try to seat as many people into a small space as possible. This actually works with the apparent theme of "dining in at your grandma's place" as evidenced by the 60's vinyl breakfast chairs and the floral-print fold-out tables. Omelettes were a huge hit, and desserts looked like a delicious heart-attack. Anything with eggs in general was tasty. The pancakes are nothing special though-- they use Aunt Jemima pancake mix, and a stack of pancakes costs as much as a whole box of the mix would. They are tasty, though. They are so-so at dealing with food allergies. For my soy-allergy, they were able to whip me up some eggs, but a lot of things are pre-made so that is an intrinsic problem. read more

I have three ways to rate a breakfast place: coffee, pancakes, and omelettes. There should always be decent coffee. It doesn't have to be gourmet, but it have to be above average. As far as the pancakes and omelettes, these are two essentials that have to be made well. I mean, if you can't do the basic breakfast items decently, then you won't last long. Brickway delivers on the first two perfectly. As for the pancakes, the omelettes are so good, I never tried them. Not only good, but perfectly consistent. I know that my omelette is going to be the same level of delicious every single time. I should do a shout out to the staff as well.
