Oh wow, what a treat! My hubby and I got to check this upscale Vietnamese sandwich shop out during their soft opening. So lucky us, we got to sample almost everything on the menu! Here are some of the standouts: Sloppy Bun - This one's a real winner. Think of the comforty goodness of your mom's sloppy joe - but spiced up for an international vacation and then dressed with a soft boiled egg, sweet basil and hot peppers. Ooh, yummy! Sweet Potato Fries - I'm a sucker for homestyle fries, and these were awesome. Thinly cut, so as to maximize the crispy factor, but still soft inside for a great texture contrast. They have that sweet but salty combo going for them, plus the portion is huge - plenty for two. Napa Slaw - Do most people go to a sandwich shop for a salad? No - especially not when Bun Mee's bread is so exceptional... but if you find yourself in a salad mood, or just needing a little extra something, something... check out the Napa Slaw. No, it's nothing like Cole Slaw (other than that it's made with cabbage). It's more of a traditional vietnamese salad with peanut sauce, carrots and the good ol' standbys of basil and pepper. Light and lovely. Finally if you appreciate the art of presentation, Bun Mee is for you. Yes, the food is fantastic, fresh and fast... but it's also served with an eye for style. As the saying goes, "Never judge a book by its cover." Well, this statement can easily be applicable to restaurants - as I, myself, fell for Bun Mee's cool, modish exterior/interior design. To start, whoever is responsible for their marketing did a fab job at designing the logo. You can't help but be intrigued by the bold "BUN MEE" sign outside their door. Being a huge "Banh Mi" lover myself (the actual spelling of the Vietnamese term for bread), I had to stop by for bite (even though I was feeling full from my Yoppi froyyo). BUN MEE's chalkboard menu somehow makes a simple Vietnamese dish feel extremely trendy. There are about 9 different sandwiches to choose from, which you can pair with a side of sweet potato fries or salad. I'm not sure how sweet potato fries are relevant in this picture, so I refrained from ordering some. Since I love paté, I ordered the Bun Mee Combo (with roast pork, paté, mortadella, garlic aioli, shaved onion, pickled carrot & daikon, cucumber). Before even taking a bite out of it, I knew I would like it. But boy, was I WRONG! Reasons why my Bun Mee was a fail: - Although there were multiple ingredients piled into my banh mi, all I could taste was bread and bland pork - While the pork was relatively tender, it had no substantial flavor. I couldn't taste the paté or garlic aioli whatsoever - For $6.50, it was a tiny sandwich. At Lee's Sandwiches, you could get one almost twice as big, half the price, and with more authentic ingredients. Yelpers, if BUN MEE was the first time you ever had a Vietnamese sandwich, I recommend that you try Latte Express 5, Lee's Sandwiches, or Spice Kit (a decent "Americanized" version of the Banh Mi). read more

I've ordered from Bun Mee for lunch catering at the company I work at and the lunch catering has been soooo very delicious! The packaging of the food has been wonderful, the food itself is super good - clean flavors and very flavorful. Everything is crazy fresh and good. I had an order today and looking forward to another lunch catering order this Friday! Lucky me and my group that gets to eat the food! On our walk down this block, we noticed that there's a cluster of restaurants which appear to be trying to take hole-in-the wall Asian street food upscale and hip. We passed by the expensive steamed bun shop, turned the corner at the expensive street taco shop, and finally arrived at Bun Mee ... the expensive Vietnamese Sandwich shop. Well - they actually offer some hot food as well ... but stay with me here. Yeah. It's cute. And no doubt the rent on this stretch of Fillmore is high. And it looks like they spent too much money on the kitchen, which takes up half the restaurant. Apparently, I can pay up to $7.95 for a banh mi, though most flavors are a little over $6. The flavors are not exactly normal - you can get pork belly, or smoked eggplant. And this is where you have to start asking yourself the question - do exotic ingredients make a sandwich *better*? Or just more expensive? I mean, to me, a properly made, traditional banh mi is pretty much one of the best things ever, and changing it really isn't worth *more* to me. So we came armed with a Blackboard Eats deal - $10 for $15 of food! Or something like that. Actually, you could get a sandwich ( except the steak sandwich ), a side salad, and a drink. The minimum possible value for your $10: $11. The maximum: $13.75. This was not the deal we were looking for, or expecting. In fact, the only way to get even close to the deal advertised would have been to get the steak sandwich, which was specifically excluded. That was kind of rubbing it in, I think. In any case, we got the combo and the eggplant sandwiches, shredded napa and mango salads, and strawberry/lychee agua fresca and a beer. Beer Lao in bottles was all they had, so that's what we got. The sandwiches were good, though we had a hard time finding any pate or mortadella in the combo sandwich. Salads were fresh, the mango salad having plenty of mangoes. The agua fresca was similarly good. I have no problem with the taste or quality of the sandwich. I just happen to like the real thing from the local hole in the wall ( or Lee's ) better. They were not crowded at all on a Thursday evening around 7pm. We found seats right away, and did not have to wait in line for longer than it took to figure out what we wanted to order. Food arrived relatively quickly. We did decide to try out their famous coconut creme cookie after dinner. $1.68 after tax. And after they for some reason decided that they needed my *name* to enter the cookie order. I have never had a more complex cookie purchase experience. The cookie is thin, and as my companion said, it's "kind of like a coconut oreo, but more expensive." In the end, it's a perfectly fine place if you're willing to pay that much for a ... different ... banh mi sandwich. read more

HAIR IN YOUR SANDWICHES!!! Let's cut to the chase, there was a piece of hair in one of the sandwiches and they didn't do anything!! The cashier was trying to apologize and was lost for words. I noticed that the restaurant received an 84 for cleanliness and that number was the number AFTER they had already fixed all their problems. I asked the cashier if that was one of the many reasons they received an 84 because they serve their food with hair. None of the chefs wear hats when cooking. To add more insult to injury, my friend and I ate the damn things because we were hungry. He insisted he wanted to try the cookies despite the hair in the food because 7x7 named the cookies at Bun Mee as one of the best....The cashier did not even think of giving them to us free, I just laughed. So overall........Bun Mee gets three strikes.... 1. Restaurant did not try to rectify the situation. 2. Restaurant couldn't apologize and just kept on nodding and couldn't believe there was a hair in the sandwich. 3. Bought some cookies after we advised them about the hair and still got charged. If you want hair on your sandwiches and have the Bun Mee team not do anything nor apologize...this is the place for you..... After being rung up by a stoned and thoroughly uninterested cashier, I was served a Pork Hawker Bowl with an uncooked egg on top (the menu said "fried egg"). I asked the cashier if they could cook the egg more and he refused and told me "this is how we cook eggs here, if you wanted it to be fully cooked you should have ordered it specially cooked". I then unhappily asked for a plate so I could take the egg off my bowl and eat the rest. I'm pretty sure the pork in my bowl was actually beef and was far from fresh cooked. It looked like dog food. The salt and pepper garlic fries I ordered just had Chinese five spice all over them and no hint of garlic or salt and pepper. I left having taken a couple bites out of my bowl. I've always been impressed with the food and service at Bun Mee. The Vietnamese pork sandwich is freaking incredible, and holds just the right amount of spice. If I go with a friend we generally will split the prawn spring rolls with peanut sauce, also to die for! My favorite part about the setup of this place is the two tables near the front of the restaurant, it's perfect for people watching. read more

I knew what I was getting myself into. My friends had been there and reported back with "mediocre food, overpriced, not worth it." I trust their judgment. We agree on almost every SF restaurant (except Tataki, Pacific Catch) and have similar expectations. Yes we like nice restaurants with high-priced delicious food, but we also appreciate as much as anyone the value in a cheap lunch that gives you enough energy to power through the afternoon. I believed them, but still I had to see for myself. So, I took a lunch break around 2 and walked the four blocks from the library of to Bun Mee. I was hungry and knew the sandwich wouldn't satisfy so I went with a grilled chicken salad. My friend has a sloppy joe sandwich. My salad wouldn't have been bad except the chicken was undercooked and unappealing. Her sandwich looked lonely on that small plate and didn't last more than a minute or two. I'm happy I didn't order one, way too small for a guy's appetite. So, I guess I can't be all that disappointed cause I'm not surprised. I learned my lesson and will stick to the rest of Fillmore from here on out. read more

When you go to Japan, you will get the death stare if you ask for soy sauce with your sushi. In Italy, you will be forever spurned if you dare ask for parmesan cheese to splatter over your perfect Italian pasta. In America, these things are expected and accepted. This is because most traditional food from other countries becomes Americanized along its journey to the states. General American consumerism seems to require ethnically diverse foods to cater to its palate. What the hell does this have to do with Bun Mee you ask? Bun Mee is Americanized Vietnamese food. It is absolutely tasty, well made and a pleasure to eat, but not authentic. When you have tracked down authentic Banh Mi in the past, you know this right away. It's not necessarily a knock on Bun Mee, but something to note and something to consider in the larger picture of how ethnic food gets adjusted in America (see the long list of rolls on sushi menus with ridiculous names like Love Roll). Bun Mee is an engaging restaurant to dip into off of FIllmore with very smart three-on-one-side seating with two benches in the window. You order at the counter, get a number and get your food quickly. The menu is diverse and intriguing if not authentic, but overpriced. The Bun Noodle Bowl (Vermicelli rice noodle, Mamma Tran's crispy egg roll, lettuce, pickled carrots and daikon, spicy cucumbers, Vietnamese herbs, cilantro, roasted peanuts, and crispy shallots served with a nuoc cham dipping sauce) was excellent once you mixed all the parts together - a flavorful bowl of goodness that is unfortunately overpriced at $13.75 once you add chicken. There's just not enough in the bowl to warrant almost 14 bucks. The Belly Bun (Braised Kurobuta pork belly, salted radish relish, shaved onion, pickled carrot and daikon, cucumber, jalapenos, cilantro) is a better deal at $6.75, but the construction of the sandwich is more assembly line than assembly for the eater. All the delicious pork belly is at the bottom, then all the dressings are on the top so unless you have a mouth the size of Andre the Giant you will be taking one bite of all pork and the next of all veggies. To make this sandwich perfect, it needs to be mixed together before and not made Subway style just following the flow chart of ingredients. With all that said, if you are not looking to eat truly authentic Vietnamese food and are looking for a hip, quick, stomach full of some tasty food, you won't be disappointed at Bun Mee. read more

Been here once. Had the Pork Belly BAHN MI, and it was extremely greasy. I didn't finish it. Very tight and not much seating inside. We took our sandwiches to-go and ate at the nearby park. House made lemonade is pretty good. The sauce for the sweet potato fries was so-so. Kind of tasted like curry. Not sure how I feel about that as a fries sauce. OVERALL: Would not come here to spend $7-8 on a so-so bahn mi sandwich. I'd rather go to Little Saigon and get a delicious Vietnamese sandwich for $3. read more

Overpriced "skimpy" food. Tried a sandwich and rice bowl, and they are very VERY skimpy with their protein, and the vegetables. You're stuck with mostly the carbs. The bread isn't that great. It lacks the scatteringly crisp crust and pillow soft interior of a good bahn mi. I think that people must be fooled by their prices - but in my opinion, paying more does not mean the product is better. read more

Our work received a catered lunch from Bun Mee today from this much acclaimed place. We had fresh salad rolls (with sliced kurubuta pork, prawns, etc) and tofu rolls, the mango sesame salad, a plethora of sandwiches and coconut cookie sandwiches for dessert. 1. The fresh rolls (both the prawn and tofu versions) had the SOFTEST rice paper skins I've ever eaten. EVER. And I've had a lot of fresh rolls. 2. Mango sesame salad... the dressing was SOOO flavorful. I expected it to be okay... but I did a total double-take and got seconds. 3. Only had room for one sandwich: the grilled pork. It was great. No complaints. Great flavor, the pork was tender, the bread crisp but not too hard. 4. and... then... oh the cookies. All my coworkers were raving about this and even though I was full, I couldn't NOT try it. The coconut cookie sandwiches have an oreo like cookie part and it's filled with this creamy coconut filling that's super light and fluffy. Not too sweet. Some of the coconut flakes are just crisp enough. Everyone had at least 2 cookies. This place will need to be repeated. Definitely. read more

I dig the idea of traditional Vietnamese sandwiches with an American twist (insert clever metaphor for America being a melting pot here).. However, Bun Mee is overhyped. Their sandwiches lack spice, and they seriously skimp on ingredients-- which makes this place seriously overpriced, especially when you're a hop, skip and a jump from Little Saigon in the Tenderloin. This is definitely one of my new favorite go to lunch spots on Fillmore! I have to say I'm a little shocked at the bad reviews, but then again Yelp is so unpredictable based on people's opinion's and what they chose to devote their stars to. First of all for those complaining about the price, I think $6 is totally reasonable for a great fresh sandwich on Fillmore. If you prefer the dingy places on Larkin that have been closed by the health department then go for it! The sandwiches and their ingredients are very fresh, and the bread is out of this world! They could be a bit spicier, but with that said I tend to like more spice than the average person. I LOVE their logo and the design of this place. Great addition to Fillmore street! read more

I am really disappointed to have to leave this review. I have been to this location and ordered food from them many times. However, a few nights ago I order through eat24 and got a confirmed delivery time of 45-60min. At an hour an 10 min I messaged Eat24 to see where my food was, they said it would be there in about 10 min, that the restaurant got busy and the delivery time went up. Thats fine, but I feel like they could have easily called, texted, messaged through the app to let me know. They didn't. Whatever, so my food was supposed to now take an hour and twenty min to show up, which is kind of silly when it is some sandwiches. But, my food doesn't show up for an hour and forty min. I understand things get busy, but you can communicate with your customers. An hour and forty min is absurd. That alone would have left me a bit annoyed but there's more. The delivery guy dropped my food. Sweet potato fries spilling out on the floor leaving a trail to my door, he sheepishly handed my a torn bag and it contents piling them up in my arms reassuring me, "its all there" No it wasn't. And its kind of gross that my clearly just hit the floor fries are now what I'm supposed to eat. I get it, accidents happen, not blaming him personally, but I think everyone would be displeased with this situation. Missing from my order were most of my fries, the dipping sauce for them, and the sriacha I had asked for. Also the sandwiches were pretty messed up from whatever they fell on to. Now with my beaten and late food I sat down to devour what had moments earlier been on the floor, only to find that everything that was supposed to be hot was cold, and everything that was supposed to be cold was warm. I just got back from a business trip in Canada, and was craving Asian food, and sandwiches. Enter Bun Mee - a great way to satisfy both! I ordered the pork sando; BF ordered 5 star chicken. The chicken was delish! Has great flavor, with a bit of a kick. The pork sando came about 10 min after, due to some confusion with our order number. I'm pretty certain my meal today gave me food poisoning. My stomach has not been right all day. This is the last time I'm eating here...what a shame. read more

This is not Saigon Sandwich or Sing Sing Sandwich Shop. For better or for worse. Bun Mee is modern and trendy. Its menu is enticing and innovative. But it can't beat a classic banh mi in Little Saigon or San Jose--you know, smothered with fancy pork and pate, served by nice Vietnamese ladies, and sold for $3.50 each. Dave H. and I had to catch a movie, so we came here for a quick bite. We shared the grilled five spice chicken and the belly bun as well as green papaya salad and sweet potato fries. The sandwich bread was had excellent texture (neither too soft nor too crunchy) and the pickled veggies, flavorful and plentiful. The fillings didn't wow me, though. The fries were my FAVORITE. I really enjoyed the red curry aioli. As for the papaya salad, it didn't have much papaya and tasted just like the pickled veggies. Bun Mee's take on the Vietnamese sandwich is one that intrigues me greatly, and am glad that their product met my expectations, and thus worthy of 3.5 - 4 stars! Lately, the store fronts of Pacific Heights (predominately up and down Fillmore) have been turning over and changing. As mentioned, was intrigued by the fusion nature of Bun Mee's sandwiches especially because I've often said that banh mi's may be my favorite type of sandwich outside a panini. Plus, their "scooter" street food menu is well balanced and not overwhelming. If you've read my reviews before, you know Asian fusion is one of my favorite cuisines, and I think Bun Mee does a fine job of mixing traditional Asian/Vietnamese ingredients with American ones. Here's what my dining companion and I ordered and shared: - Sloppy bun was surprisingly good! I didn't grow up eating sloppy joes, but I'm a fan of flavored ground beef in pockets and pastries, so why not a toasted baguette?! The curry flavor was on point and shone with just the right amount of other ingredients: onions basil and jalapenos. Good call not adding the traditional bahn mi ingredients such as the pickled carrots and daikon. It's suggested to add an egg, but we passed. - Belly bun was equally, if not more delicious! Braised pork belly was tender and seasoned well. And in this sandwich it was a great idea to bring in the pickled carrots and daikon, cucumbers, jalapenos and cilantro as it added freshness and texture to the otherwise pretty heavy and flavorful pork belly. With a boiled egg it's one helluva sandwich. - Side of green papaya salad was just okay. While the ingredients were fresh tasting it lacked flavor and heat. However, the sweet potato fries served with red curry aioli were crisped and season right! Staff is friendly and offer great suggestions, and space is clean and fun. I'll likely go again with another bahn mi aficionado and try the Bun Mee combo since it's most like the traditional and one of the rice bowls or salads. read more

High prices, but it's in a prime spot on Fillmore. Obviously their target market is the pac heights trophy wives, who see the pictures their husbands send back from their business (ladyboy) trips to southeast asia and think "ooh I wanna try that, I'm going to drag my $1500 stroller in there and try it out!". At least the meat did taste ok, so I was gonna give this place 3 stars. *Then* I looked into my water glass and saw a huge brown hairy floaty in it! I went to the counter and told them about it, then got a drink that came in a sealed container. The lady at the counter showed it to some woman, who I guess was the manager (I didn't have time to raise hell). After sitting back down, I watched what they did about it. The manager opened the top of the big water jug, peered into it, then closed it and did nothing! I saw other people walking away from it with brown hairy floaties in their water too! To top it off, I looked at the health inspection score thingy (ironically, right next to the pond-water dispenser) and they got a 79. That's the lowest I've ever seen in the city. As a safety precaution, I promptly went to a bar and drank large quantities of vodka to kill any bacteria I might have ingested. read more

Cute name, great aesthetic, overall disappointing. Full disclosure, we didn't try their sandwiches, just an afternoon snack. I'm a stickler for good cafe su da (Vietnamese coffee) and was struck that when I ordered mine, it came to my table immediately, which made me suspect that it wasn't dripped to order, the authentic way. Already knowing the answer to my question, I inquired about the process by which they make their coffee, and was told what I already suspected, that they typically make a batch of it every one or two days. At $3.50 a glass, it's overpriced and weak compared to what the "real" Vietnamese places are doing. The fried egg rolls were decent, but again, the $5.50 sticker price seemed way too high for two small egg rolls. I'm usually not fazed by overpriced food, because to me, if it's good, it's worth it. But in Bun Mee's case, it was both expensive and underwhelming. On a positive note, the overall feel of the place was great and the use of Cafe du Monde coffee cans as chopstick/napkin holders was cute. Too bad they weren't actually brewing the coffee in those cans to make my Vietnamese coffee. read more

I live in the neighborhood and used to really LOVE this place, but the menu changed recently, and unfortunately, a lot of my favorites changed for the worse. They removed the caramel-citrus rice bowl from the menu, which was my absolute fave. My second go-to was the peanut rice bowl, but their peanut sauce recipe also changed. It's a lot more viscous now and tastes a lot like soft peanut butter. Also, the way it's literally "squirted" onto the rice bowl makes it look far from appetizing, almost like tanish-brown soft serve. They also removed some ingredients from their spring rolls. They used to be AWESOME, but now there's no mango in them and also less meat. On top of that, you get to dip it into the peanut sauce that I described above. The salt and pepper fries are still good, as are the fish and chips, but I guess there's not much changing that can really occur with fried foods. They deliver, so that's a plus, but I definitely ordered from them and ate there a lot more before all of menu changes occurred. read more

Love the style of the spot, but banh mi should be a scrumptious comfy little sandwich and this was a meager cold little samwich. Tried both of their 2 classic styles and not impressed. I love Vietnamese sandwiches. My favorites from this place have to be the belly bun with the hard boiled egg. And the catfish is a real winner, even on days of Lent where we can't eat meat. Belly bun rich in flavor, just enough saltiness, on a hit making bread. Catfish has a unique curry ish taste that reminds me of mama's cooking. Mama Tran's rolls are unique egg rolls. Lots of filling and a great crunch. My bf and I came in on Saturday and ordered one of each with the sweet potato fries. He ordered the ice coffee (which he said tasted just right and woke him up real good) while I ordered the limeade (not too sweet and just tangy enough). Its the perfect lunch on a nice sunny day for the cherry blossom festival. We sat at the bar and got to watch the staff make everyone elses' lunch. They were all super nice and accommodated us well.
