Confession: I'm a huge fan of Illuminations' Minion franchise + I'm a sucker for experiential pop-ups. So we decided to indulge in some greasy burgers, fries, and chili dogs at Carney's on Sunset. We arrived close to opening time and avoided the crazy lunch rush. Ordering was pretty simple, but somehow things got a bit screwy. Must've been some Minions in the kitchen to blame for the order shenanigans. Our food came out separately so the three of us didn't get to eat at the same time. Also, our order wasn't quite right so they had to remake it. Despite the food snafu, the turkey Carney's chili dog was tasty. However, I'm not so sure it was turkey per my order. The dog could've had more onions on top and the tomatoes would've been better diced, but it's classic Carney's food so we went with it. My kiddo loved his cheeseburger and the fries were OK. I used to work just up the street from Carney's and it was our go-to lunch stop before payday when our budget was tight. Back before Covid, it was a decent lunch for under $10. It's still pretty OK priced for the times and the food is filling--with or without the Minions for the backdrop. I remember the sticky tables even back then. Well, some things never change. The menu featured their standard Chocolate-dipped BANANA for the Minions. However, it would've been nice to see a more customized menu and some of the thematic decor on the inside. I guess I'll just settle for the mixup in our order as part of our special experience.

We went for the minions experience and had a great lunch. Classic chili dog with onions and chili fries. Everything made to order and ready quickly. Portion of chili was generous. Everything was delicious! We sat inside and enjoyed the photos on the wall and the diner type experience. We found street parking but they have their own private lot, which is a plus for the location.

Lunch in a train car!!! First time going to Carney's, but not the last time. There are a good number of tables, even if it is packed, it seems like tables open up all of the time. And with a great, elevated view of Sunset. There is parking, some of the spots are a bit tight, but there are a good amount of spots. There is a lot of history on the walls, definitely a classic restaurant. And restrooms you do not need a code for. If the door is locked, someone is in there. The restaurant is clean and full of character. The menu is small, but well thought out with dogs and sausages, as well as burgers, salads and wraps. I have been wanting a thick burger for a while, everything seems to be a smash burgers right now.... This hit the spot. Thick and juicy quality meat and not over cooked. I got the half pound burger, med rare. With a New York style turkey dog for my partner. Split the train wreck fires and we were stuffed. The burger was well cooked, not dry at all. Very substantial. The turkey dog does take a bit longer to cook, but was told that it was worth it. It was cooked well and was full of flavor. The fries are really good and are very messy, better than the competitions

Iconic stop on the Sunset strip where you literally eat in a railroad train car! The service is quick and efficient, they've had their system down since 1975. You feel like you've traveled back in time and order from a traditional kitchen window. The chili was delicious and there were options like turkey dogs, and half n half fries when you just can't decide what to choose. A fun lunch for a Hollywood day, I highly recommend hanging out and enjoying a piece of LA history. Not to mention there is parking... unheard of in the city!

Ya gotta love Carney's. Ya just gotta. A train car loitering on a curve of the Sunset Strip, dishing up Chili Cheeseburgers and Fries like heart disease is still undiscovered. The harshness of the fluorescent lights against the white walls, the aromatic steam rising up from the grill packed with burgers and chicken and onions, the cashier who sends soda cup lids gliding through the air from one hand to his other like a Frisbee hanging on the breeze. It's the epitome of L.A. fast food heaven, with a broader, more varied menu than the other similar places around town, and I've always liked it more than Tommy's. At first glance, the thin burger patties and chili seem interchangeable with that other venerable burger stop, but I think the quality is better at Carney's. Yes, the meat tastes better. The chili also appears very similar, but is actually not as greasy (aka easier on the tummy). Fries are definitely better: thin shoestrings cooked to order and served hot out of the fryer naked, letting you add as much or as little salt as you like. Though I also like chili fries, I order my chili on the side, so it's a neater, one dip at a time affair, which also keeps the fries crispier for longer. Tonight, as always, I ordered a Cheeseburger with just Chili. My wife, however, orders hers exactly as advertised, with chili, mustard, tomato and pickles. Both were hot off the grill, tasty and satisfying. Our order of fries was, indeed, quite crispy and piping hot, our side of chili at the ready for dipping. I also like to grab a few banana peppers, bite off the ends, and sprinkle the juice onto the burger for a little extra heat. Try it next time! And so, it was a good, old-fashioned L.A. dinner for a Thursday night, filled with flavor and classic comfort. Whether on the Strip or on Ventura Blvd., you can't go wrong when you stop for a meal at the train.

I knew I would be in West Hollywood and was researching places that seemed like a good meal. I came across Carneys, serving burgers and hotdogs, but the Chili and the ambiance, décor of the restaurant being a train car is what sucked me in. I ordered a chili cheese burger and chili cheese fries. Chili Cheese burger consisted of a lightly toasted bun, patty with cheese, topped with chili, pickles, onion. Solid burger. Chili Cheese Fries: fries were the cut similar to McDonalds, not too thin, not too thick, fried to a golden brown, not soggy, topped with chili and cheese. The Chili is the star. Nice and thick. Not runny. Full of flavor. Great meal. Ordering was easy, very great service

Ahh this place I think catches the attention of anyone that passes by. It has such a cute and instagramable entrance. All the minions monsters and train stop set up is so creative and I feel it makes whatever you eat here taste better. In terms of food they have a menu you can find anywhere really. The food is good, I would say you come here more for the experience of eating inside an animated train. I love how the eyes outside move every once in a while. I give it to them for the great set up. they went all out!

I found out this place had a minion theme but by the time we got there it was all taken down so I was most excited about that! But this place is such a cute spot to go to! It's literally a train cart, I am kinda scared of heights so you are a little up in the air lol. They were quick to take my order and I felt like they already know what you want, the guy was writing down everything as soon as I was talking. I was also wondering if they have combos I didn't see it but if someone could help me out thanks! I had to order my veggie burger "soy based patty" and then a side of fries and a drink separately I believe. My burger was super delicious if actually tasted like a grilled burger, the fries were crispy and delicious! If you guys are looking for a good burger this is the space to chill and just eat!

Honestly, this Carney's is a time capsule. I feel as if nothing has changed. I live closer to the Studio City location, but decided to come to Sunset. Loved the creaking wooden floor board, train car atmosphere, unchanged menu, friendly staff, cool floating lid flip, etc. I came for a Double Cheeseburger, which did not disappoint. So good. No ketchup. If you add ketchup to a burger, you obviously don't like burgers. I also ordered a Chicken Pasta Salad, because that was my to go order in the past. It tasted the same, just not nostalgic the same. High expectations, I suppose. All in all, wonderful restaurant.

We are always down for a good smash burger and this one here is definitely a top contender! The restaurant is a literal train. Inside was clean and service was quick. They are most famous for their chili cheeseburger and chilli cheese fries, which is what my husband ordered. I opt to go just a little lighter with a regular cheese burger and a side of fries. Everything is made to order and super hot and fresh. It's what a burger should be! On the side they have those little pepperoncinis and it's always a perfect pairing. They were more than generous with the chili on the fries, enough so that I was able to get a taste and some. This is easily a spot that I would add on my go to places when in the area.

Haven't been to Carneys since I was a little girl. I was feeling nostalgic and stopped by for a cheeseburger and chili cheese fries. Taste just how I remember with a slightly smaller burger patty. Service was A-1 and my food was ready quickly. Best of all parking was a breeze. Love that it's still a train car.

Visited Hollywood and had to stop by the iconic Carney's. Awesome place... Ordered the chili fries and a double cheeseburger. I'd put their chili fries up against any other and they would win! Menu is simple but they do it well. Overall great place from the food to the rich history and atmosphere.

Another nice outing at Carney's on the Strip. I enjoy eating outside on a sunny day, their outdoor area is very nice and relaxing,it has a great view of the strip, of the cool Art Deco Sunset Tower building. I enjoy eating there and watch the "action" , see what's going on the strip, people watch. Food is as good as usual. Their beer menu has changed. An IPA is on tap now, Blue Moon instead of Sam Adams. I prefer a Sam Adams, but a Blue Moon still works with my New Yorker. My husband got his Chili dog as usual and we enjoyed a couple of large portion of fries. Splurge a tad, right? Since prices are reasonable here, this could be a fun, cheap date. Love the decor, the old train is unique, has a romantic vibe. Cool landmark of our city! read more

Unfortunately after eating here many times in the past this past Friday night was a real let down. Chili cheese dog had a nasty wet and soggy bun and the chili cheeseburger barely went down as well. Fries were also bad as you can taste the frying oil needed to be changed. I had taken my family and they were all upset at me as well for taking them here as it was there first time. Hope they can turn it around as I would hate to see a place like this ever close. read more

This is such a great iconic Los Angeles small business restaurant. You can have a great dog , fries and a beer and not leave disappointed. They have kept their prices reasonable even after so many post Covid restaurants still have their prices jacked up. Free Parking, a train car, outdoor seating, what's not to like. Carneys is very similar to Tommy's but IMO Carneys is better. Their service is great, you Ofer your food in the middle of the train and within a few minutes your order is hot and ready. I ordered their double chili cheese burger and it was phenomenal. It was very messy especially when the chili gets all over your hands! The burger itself tasted very meaty and fresh. And the best part is the slice of tomato that they put it in. It adds some freshness to a guilty pleasure sandwich. I also ordered their chili cheese dog minus the onions and they also forgot to put a tomato wedge in it so that was a bummer. The dog itself tasted great and was made out of beef and had an excellent snap to every bite. I highly recommend this place at all possible. If only Chicago had Carneys or Tommy's. read more

Want some fresh and good burgers must try out Carney's on Sunset. There burgers and toppings are so fresh makes the burger so delicious. The workers are very nice all of them cool people. Nice feeling getting inside the restaurant literally in a train made into a restaurant. This place alone is pretty interesting. Why? It's a train! That caught our attention for sure. The food was good too. We chose the basics for a burger place and their known train wreck fries, which were actually really good. The people preparing the food were very nice and attentive when serving our food. The vibe was chill, they have seating outside, which is where we ended up eating. Luckily the night weather was perfect. A lot of people out and about which I loved. Quite possibly THE WORST burger and BLAND tasting fries of all time. OK I get the nostalgia of eating in a train car, but the food is horrible. 1. Tomato on the burger is 4x the burger size. 2. Mustard on a burger with shredded lettuce - bad move. 3. Bun is way too big. 4. Fries taste like....actually, nothing. So, if you want a tomato sandwich, this is your place .Try to find the burger patty in your burger. read more

Would you like a delicious burger from an old train car on Sunset Blvd? Yes, Please! Carney's is a must try in Hollywood...I've been here so many times & I always love it. I've only been here at night time...during the week they close at 12:00am but on the weekends at 3:00am so it's the perfect place to catch dinner after a concert, movie, bar, etc. Attention Vegetarians & Vegans...the "Garden Burger" is delicious! But my ultimate favorite is "The Planet Burger" it's so good, kinda taste like the "Impossible Burger" but better. My boyfriend has tried maybe everything on the Menu & I haven't heard any complaints. Please try the fries...they are so good! On top of having ketchup & mustard to add to your fries they also have this spicy sauce...omg I love it! (My mouth is so watery right now). Oh! and for dessert try the chocolate dipped frozen banana...yummy! The dine-in area accommodates about 40 people, but there's is also on outside sitting area. I almost always eat inside just because I enjoy looking out of a train window as I enjoy my burger. The place is usually clean and restrooms are well kept. The parking is behind the Train and the lot is best entered going west on Sunset Blvd due to traffic...with one way in and one way out so be cautious it's a little tricky. Great environment, cool vibes, awesome Customer Service! They know my boyfriend & my name...so yes! I feel the love :) 5 Stars for Carney's! Funny story, I got a no helmet ticket ten minutes before midnight on NYE when the helmet law went into effect (Cop insisted my beeper's time was wrong.) He wrote me the ticket in their parking lot and when everyone started honking and counting down for the new year, I asked if my New Year's kiss was going to be on my butt. He still gave me the ticket. So, you think it would be weird that I have never tried Carney's until this weekend! And let me tell you, I have really been missing out! The wife and I went together and got a small assortment of foods. The cheese fries were OK. I can see how they would be wonderful if you put the chili on there as well. The burger was awesome! I got the double cheeseburger with bacon and it was cooked absolutely perfectly! Seasoning was great, toppings were awesome, although I'm not the biggest fan of shredded lettuce. Gotta get the grilled onions! The wife got a hotdog and I can see why they have won the best hotdog in LA. The snap was insane! The flavor was perfect. The ambience was awesome. You can't go wrong, because it's a train car! Comfortable seats, clean tables bathrooms were in good shape and the seating outside was plentiful and gives you a nice view of Sunset. Now that I have finally discovered this place, I will definitely be coming back! read more

If you're in LA and looking for a great burger, you have to stop by this iconic spot. You could not sleep on their hotdogs, either. I got the Chili Burger, and it was on point. The taste of the burger hasn't changed since it was opened in 1975. The prices are reasonable, and I recommend eating inside the cabin. read more

I have decided that I will never enjoy a hamburger again as much as the one I had here today! In the past I have also relished the Carney dog with its luscious tomato, onions, and chili. But today, accompanied by their scrumptious sweet potato fries I experienced the best lunch ever--topped off by the delicious chocolate chip cookies. The food is good and what you would expect, chili dogs and chili burgers. If you're down by Beverly and rampart, try Tommy's chili burgers and dogs at that end of town. The music is good, the owner is nice. Be sure to tip well. My fries were underdone but I didn't bother going and asking them to be cooked more. read more

Your not coming here for fine dining you are coming here for one greasy hamburger that kicks in n outs in the butt. After a disappointing experience with In n Out the day before I wasn't expecting much but this burger was so good and filled with veggies! Love when there is so much lettuce it's falling it everywhere. You have to add bacon to the burger, or anything you order it's super crispy and delicious. My dad said he came here when he was my age so any place that's been around for that long must be doing something right. Such a great spot for a tourist looking for a more local vibe. read more

Yummy dogs! They offer a variety of options/toppings to choose from. I love that they have turkey dogs and chicken sausages on the menu. Didn't see any veggie dogs but they do offer a vegan burger. The Chicago style turkey dog was delicious. As was the chicken apple sausage with spicy pineapple slaw. Scarfed them both down very quick. Who doesn't love a good chili cheese burger and fries in a train on the famous Sunset Strip?! We've been coming here for years! The food is always good and consistent. Old school, greasy spoon chili & cheese on a burger! Not some fancy spinoff with ingredients you can't pronounce. This is as old skool as it gets! One of Hollywood's famous iconic eateries! Staff is always friendly. Food comes out quick. (Although at lunch time expect a line to order). There's not a lot of indoor seating, but people don't generally hang out long, as well as picnic benches outside if you want to people watch. (Don't forget to wave at the tour buses) There's a large parking lot in the back and some street parking. The bathroom was clean but could stand a paint touch up. Carney's is a family owned business that prides itself on serving some of the best hamburgers and hot dogs in LA, and probably the world. For over 40 years we have stayed true to what has made us the best: we use the freshest ingredients on the market and have never skimped on quality.

History

Established in 1981.

Carney's was founded in 1975 by John Wolfe, Sr. and his wife Pat Wolfe. Together they worked countless hours building the restaurant into a Sunset Strip destination. In a time when hamburger establishments were popping up all over the place, John chose to build a restaurant out of an old Pacific Railroad passenger train. Being a former radio executive, he understood the importance of lasting impressions and being different. Not only was John good at publicity but he could also cook amazing burgers and hot dogs. John knew that by building a portable restaurant that if anything were to happened to their Sunset Strip lease, they could simply pick up and move their business elsewhere. Needless to say, the business is still around today and has become quite the LA Landmark. In 1981 Carney's decided to add another location on Ventura Blvd in Studio City.

I can't help but feel…read morethat some of the old vintage diners are still popular because they're relatively cheap / good value for large portions... but I care more about quality than quantity. There just aren't many other places even trying to do what they do at Philippe the Original. The beef dip and lamb dip sandwiches hit every time. Everything works in harmony.

We were greeted by a friendly hostess who took our order and told us to look for any spot we'd like. The Dan Dan noodles came out quick and was delicious. The noodles had a nice chewy texture and the thick peanut sauce and chili oil that coated it made it super scrumptious. The freshness of the cucumber and herbs cutting through the rich sauce balanced it out. The pan fried pork buns however were rather forgettable. The meat was juicy but I was left wanting more flavour in both the meat and the buns. I also wish the bottoms were a bit crispier. I'm definitely looking forward to coming back to try their breakfast menu and other items though. Because peeking at the other tables they offerings looked delicious.

The Good: the food here is actually pretty good. The Bad: My primary concern is the practice of stacking open paper boxes containing food along the main counter, directly in front of customers. This method of food preparation presents serious hygiene risks. It leaves food exposed to anyone passing by, allowing customers to easily look into, breathe on, or even unintentionally touch meals that aren't theirs. Once items are placed in these open boxes, they sit uncovered on the counter while awaiting pickup. During this time, staff frequently call out names while speaking directly over the exposed food. During my visit, I observed a 5- to 10-minute conversation between an employee and what appeared to be a friend, taking place directly above the stacked boxes. During this interaction, portions of the food order were added to the open paper boxes, further heightening the risk of contamination. I observed this process for 30 minutes and found it deeply concerning from a food safety and public health standpoint. read more

When I see that train car I instantly get hungry! Doesn't matter what location you go to, Carney's is the bomb! I usually go with a chili dog but their burgers are just as dank! You hear a lot of people talk about Pink's or other hot dog shops but I would take a dog from Carney's over any others, any day! Don't want a hot dog? Put that chili on a burger! There's nothing in this world better than a huge burger with hot, fresh chili smothered all over it! Their fries are another reason why I love Carney's so much, same with their desserts! As I said, I always go with a chili dog but my dessert varies when I come (and yes, I always get dessert), some days it's an ice cream bar, a few cookies, strawberry bar or best yet.. a large chocolate dipped banana! Tell me that doesn't sound amazing! I think I'm about to go hit up Carney's now after writing this review! read more

This place is a total vibe! Picture this - riding a train on Sunset Blvd, chowing down on a burger, hot dog, fries, and sipping on a cold beer. And here's the kicker - the restaurant is literally a train car on train tracks. How cool is that? You dig! The food is surprisingly good; I was pleasantly surprised. We took my son there before an event, and he absolutely loved it. The whole setup is nice, and the view of Sunset Blvd through the train window adds a unique touch. The customer service is kind and adds to the overall positive experience. I recommend trying the Double Cheeseburger and Chili Fries, and definitely go for the Carney's Hot Dog. It's a fun spot with yummy food - what more could you ask for? read more

Love this place! The best thing about this place is the location and free parking when you can find a spot. This has to be the best place to get a late night spot after you have gotten seriously enebriated at one of the local spots. I walk here with my friends after I have a couple of drinks at Saddle Ranch and Pink Tacos. Great spot to hang out after a couple of drinks with the guys, definitely not a place to take a date. Although the Sunset strip is pretty cool because all of the people here are gorgeous. I think that the next time I go I will see a babe. If you are one, then email me with your number. Just kidding. Carney's is my favorite train restaurant in the city. Not only that but the hot dogs and burgers here are probably also the best in the city. It is so fun to come and eat here as well. The chili hot dogs are so delicious. The chili tastes like it is freshly made and everyone in my family loves it. There is absolutely no hot or spicy flavor at all. The hamburgers here are also good. They are always made to order fresh. I'd recommend ordering french fries as they are also quite good here as well. What makes it the best is that all of this takes place inside a classic train cabin. Just coming to eat here is a fun and memorable experience! read more

Carney's really gets it right for a solid burger spot. The burger was juicy, messy in the best way, and just straight-up good without doing too much. It's set inside an iconic train car diner, which gives it that classic, slightly nostalgic vibe without feeling staged. Super chill atmosphere, quick flow, and the workers were friendly and efficient even when it was busy. And if you go, get the large chili -- especially if you're sharing. That chili is dangerous in the best way. You start "just trying it" and suddenly it's halfway gone. Nothing overhyped, just a consistently good stop that makes you want to come back. read more

I recently had the pleasure of trying the cheeseburger and chili cheese fries at this spot and let me tell you, it was absolutely fantastic. The cheeseburger was perfectly cooked and juicy, with the cheese melting just right, and the chili cheese fries were loaded with flavor and had just the right amount of kick. And to top it off, I indulged in an amazing chocolate chip cookie that was the perfect sweet ending to my meal. I've been here once before and took another visit this time around in Carney's Restaurant. The outside of the train car has changed which I think is a shame as I feel it looked better before but the food us just as good. The lady taking our order could not understand us at all and ended up serving us 2 hot-dogs each when we only ordered one. My husband paid whilst I was in the loo and didn't recognize it was well over what two hot-dogs should have been. I hope this was a genuine mistake and not a scam for tourists. Got 2 carney dogs, a large train wreck fries and 2 drinks all for 18 bucks. Dirt cheap! The carney dog is your typical chili dog, I still prefer Tommy's over it but Carney's is better than Pink's IMO. The train wreck fries though..so good!! It's basically fries with grilled onions, cheese and thousand island dressing. The place (the train LOL) is small inside but they have outdoor seating to accommodate more people. The guys behind the counter are also really friendly too. Cheap food + train wreck fries + great service + free parking in Hollywood = 4 stars! read more

always passed this place when I was younger and found it to be so fascinating I couldn't wait to try it out. well after many many anticipated years I finally went. and...... I was disappointed with the food.. the place itself was awesome, how many times can you say you ate in a train. Not many. so that aspect is pretty cool. But their chili burgers are OK (tommys chili kills them hands down) and their fries are blah! wont be back. Tried it. Love the place itself but the quality of food is slacking and if it wasn't before they need to fix that ASAP! read more

An iconic restaurant that is made out of an old train caboose, that serves hotdogs and hamburgers. There is not too much else. The fanciest that this place gets is adding ketchup to an item. The corn dogs though are amazing. They are not the microwave kind that mom makes, but the baked original kind that only come when the county fair is in town. For the type of food that I bought, the price was not exactly what I wanted. It seemed to be a bit much for a hotdog. I probably would only go back there, if there were no other choices. read more

I am a hot dog lover, and I have eaten some great dogs around the country. If this is what the star's call their favorite, they haven't had a really good hot dog. It is fun to set in a train car, and the burgers looked better than the hot dogs, but can't say I would eat a dog there again. My husband got a chili dog, and I am not sure what it was....but I have never seen chili like what was on his dog. Sorry Carney's...but not happy. Great for bringing the kids after school. I have been coming to Carney's for many years. The staff is always polite, friendly and helpful. The food is consistent and always tasty. The service is always fast, especially for a place that makes up each order when it is placed. We get hot dogs or burgers with chile. I like the big chunky slice of tomatoe. Their fries, either the standard french fries or sweet potato fries are always cooked perfectly. When we pick up "togo" I always get the chile in a styrofoam cup on the side, and I portion it out when we get home. read more

I love this place so much. I actually didn't expect to like it so much, but I was wrong. The juiciness of the burger is absolutely phenomenal and the french fries were the right amount if crispy, crunchy, salty, softness, everything was perfect. The service was great, the staff was nice. The location could be a bit better I guess, but it is not horrible. The melted cheese on the burger really made the burger what it is, and I would definitely recommend this place to everyone. read more

Went here with once with my sister walking on our way to someplace and stopped in for a hot dog and it was so good. Went again not to long ago with the boyfriend and it was even better. I love the trolly where you order and can eat inside but I prefer to eat outside on the outside patio and people watch. I had the spicy polish and WOO it was spicy, but so good. We split the chili fries which were great and my boyfriend got something with red cabbage on it and it was amazing. read more

I went here for the first time today to grab a quick bite to eat with friends and I gotta say this is one of best chili cheese hot dogs I've tasted in a long time. I had the chili cheese dog with onions and tomato slices which worked well for me. The chili cheese dog didn't leave me feeling heavy or bloated afterwords. The inside of Carney's is an old fashion train setting which fits very well with the food. Service is quick too. Delicious quick food! Great service. read more

OK, so i was born and raised in the SFV - and after 10 years on the East, I am finally back in So. Cal. I had really great memories of eating at carneys as a child. The food according to my memory was amazing, but you know how things can change over time and the memory becomes better than the reality. Well, no in this case. One of the best classic chili burgers and chili dogs in Los Angeles! I have been coming to Carney's ever since they opened many many years ago, every single meal I have eaten at Carney's has been fantastic.
