We sat at the counter for a good fifteen minutes, only to be completely ignored. Yes, they were busy, but this is no excuse. We finally walked out. We were really excited to try this coffee shop while staying in Coronado this week. What a disappointment! I'm not going to critique the food (not great at best but places like this are hit and miss). The one star is for the fantastic hostess...as for the less than energetic waitress...she couldn't even smile & don't sit at the very last booth...small dead flys are stuck all over the wall and the wood cabinet, it was completely disgusting. Great home style breakfast with a good Cali flair. Blueberry pancakes were huge and very good and fluffy. Huevos Rancheros were the right amount of spice and very fresh. Honey and cinnamon latte was unique and so tasty. Smoothies were good too. The 50s diner atmosphere was cute and the kids loved the working juke boxes at our booth. While the food is very good, the servers can spoil even world class cuisine. I had been in the habit of sitting at the large table next to the juke-box for about a month. I chose that table for it's proximity to the juke-box, which has the only reliable roledex of songs to play at 2 for a quarter *(NOT the 5 for 50 cents it promotes next to the coin slot); the selectors at the tables do NOT have reliable selections, so you may put in money for half a dozen songs and actually hear only ONE, as the others will turn out to be grab-bag selections. Stopping by yesterday, for the FOURTH time in a week, I dropped my things at the table and headed to the restroom, stopping to order from the two lazily-lounging waitresses in the otherwise customer vacant restaurant. The first waitress referred me to the second, and I ordered my omelette, & coffee with rye toast and a side of salsa. Returning from the restroom, I found my coffee at the table and poured cream in it, but, before I could take even a sip, the first waitress I had approached (a Mexican girl) showed up at the table and ask me to move as the table was for more than one person (despite my having been served at that table a dozen times in a given month without concern). Glancing at the 8 or so vacant booths behind her, I told her "I always sit here", she persisted Belligerently, telling me the table was reserved for larger parties. I pushed the coffee away, and told her, "I don't want this, take it back," collected my things and walked out. Good food LOUSEY "service". I no longer eat at CLAYTON'S in Coronado! read more

Clayton's is a Coronado classic and the diner food here is some of the best you'll find anywhere. I have enjoyed every bite of every meal I've ordered here and will always go back for more. The only reason I'm not giving it five stars is that some of the staff, especially some of the younger guys, seem more into hanging out by the kitchen than seeing to customers. These guys are OK, the coffee tasted good (although my mocha was WAY too chocolate-y - just 'cos I'm a mocha drinker, doesn't mean I'd prefer a hot chocolate - I do actually like coffee) and the donut holes are yummy. I'm giving 3 stars (borderline 2 stars) because of the customer service at the take-out window. We went on Easter morning and ordered two coffees. The poor girl at the machine was clearly not trained in efficiency, it took a really long time. Then, our drinks were lukewarm at best. My husband sucked it up cos he's nicer than me, I went back and let them know it wasn't hot. This was apparently not taken well, because the girl first wanted to just stick the frother in the coffee to heat it up (that doesn't work, plus this had whipped cream on it, plus I had specified no whipped cream so asked her to remake it), then she made another one but very passive-aggressively (in my opinion) made it scalding hot. Come on now - just because someone wants a coffee that's hotter than tepid doesn't mean they're an annoying customer who deserves to be given burnt coffee out of revenge! I'm actually not that high-maintenance, I just really wanted an enjoyable coffee that morning and the lukewarm thing I was given at first (due to her rushing) wasn't what I'd been hoping for. An apology and a properly made, hot (not burnt) coffee would have made this a 5 star review, not 2.5. read more

My family of 5 loved it so much we went back again the next day. We had a very short wait to seat our large group, both times we sat at the counter which is fun. Food was delicious all 10 plates (5 people/ 2 days) - breakfast you would expect from a diner. My kids loved the Mexican hot cocoa. Prices were what you would expect for sit down meal. read more

My friend and I were strolling by, and were charmed by the 50s aura that loomed this cute diner. We sat down thinking we could order to-go from inside, but they sent us to their window on the adjacent street to order. (Which was fine.) I was ordering their daily special (the raspberry white mocha) when I caught sight of their donuts and heaven opened to let angels sing! They have lucky charms on their donuts. I repeat: THEY HAVE LUCKY CHARM DONUTS. The drink and the donut were absolutely DELICIOUS. Everything was going great until my friend ordered a club sandwich w/ a side of hash browns and a water, and they took 60 minutes of our precious lives that I we will never get back. When they finally came with the order; my friend asked for ranch, and we had to watch the lady hold the ranch in her hand for 10 minutes while she talked to a coworker. And she didn't even bring the water so it was another 5 minute wait for some low quality water in a foam hot beverage container (like not even a basic water cup for their iced drinks??) The food was great--don't get me wrong there--but the their service was absolute trash. Totally not worth the wait! There's a 10% chance I'll be back, but that's only for the reasonably priced food. This place looked really neat. The menu had some interesting plates. Unfortnately we never got the chance to try any of them. Do not come here if you have a small child that requires a highchair. They only have room for a highchair at two tables. We waited for over 30 mins for one of these tables to open up. They turned the place over while we were patiently waiting outside. The hostess was apologetic, but that didn't quiet our hungry bellies. We eventually gave up and left. I am sure the food is wonderful here and we may eventually try it....just not with our toddler. read more

I read so many different reviews that I had to try this place, and I have to agree with the ones who liked it. I had the meatlover's omelet with wheat toast, which was quite good. The waitresses were very pleasant and efficient, and the retro diner atmosphere was fun. I will say, in regard to the comments about it being very warm, I could see where that would be an issue. I am a Coronado resident and I love the food, but the service is sub-par and definitely a deterrent. Today's visit was special though. Walked in with a friend visiting from out of town, and the waitress was too busy having a personal conversation with her friend to greet us. I started to say hello as we found a place at the counter, but felt like I would be interrupting her so I refrained. She finally finished her conversation and gave my friend and I a passive hello when she brought menus. She said she needed to wipe the counter down before we settled in and used a rag that was drenched with water. The counter had a puddle of water and she commenced to fanning the water with one of the menus to dry it off. Stunned, I sat watching without a word. I sat back in my seat and tried to look over the menu ignoring her ignorance and inconsideration, and she finally had to reach for napkins to dry it off so we could sit up to the counter. I was so disgusted with the service right off the bat! I have been a waitress and manager and I would have been ashamed to provide service to anyone in the manner in which my visit started off. I felt like a bother. My friend knew I was disturbed and as she asked me what I was thinking, referring to the menu, to which I replied, "Breath, remember to breath and ignore what just happened." I'm glad I was able to laugh about it, but we decided to take our business elsewhere. Management needs to assess their service and personnel providing it. Good thing there isn't much competition for a joint like that in town. Absolutely horrible service. read more

Excellent Service. Wait staff was pleasant, efficient and helpful. Food was excellent. I had a meat lovers omelet which was more than I could finish and the hash browns were fried to perfection (my wife stole 1/2 of them). This really should not get any stars as we never had the chance to eat here. We put our name in with the hostess and told her we'd be sitting around the corner getting coffee at Clayton's walk up. She said it would be 1/2 hour wait. After the 1/2 wait I went and told her not to forget us by the walk up. We waited another 15 minutes and another member of our party talked to her and she said we were the next table and she would let us know. Another 15 minutes went by and we checked in with her and she said she called our name and we weren't there. All in all we Waite for an hour and 1/2 and then she said it would be another 15 minutes. We then left and there was no apology, no nothing. I hope management reads this. This is not acceptable, period. read more

I'm only giving this 2 stars because both times I've been there the servers have been really nice, otherwise I would have given them 1 star. First time here I ordered a waffle, they brought out everyone else's food except mine. About 10 minutes after that the server told me that they burned my waffle and they were making me a new one. By the time I got my new waffle everyone else had already finished there food and my new waffle was burned as well. The second time I came here they only put cheese on half my sandwich. Someone wrote of the chalk board "Voted Best Breakfast in Town". Someone needs to write "But Avoid the Turkey Dinner". Stopped in for lunch. Sat at the counter and noticed another customer had ordered what looked like roast turkey breast with mashed potatoes and gravy with cranberry sauce. It looked appetizing so I ordered the dinner. with a Caesar salad instead of soup. It was a busy lunch crowd, so there was a long wait. The salad and the dinner arrived at the same time. I tasted the lumpy mashed potatoes and they were cold so I asked that the plate be heated while I ate my salad. The potatoes and dressing had absolutely no flavor but blandness. Cook forgot to add any sage to the dressing. The gravy was most likely right out of a can. The cranberry jelly tasted like it had been store in the refrigerator uncovered. In the flavor, there were hints of something other than cranberry. I may try the coffee shop again, but if I do, I'll try one of their breakfast items read more

Sorry! we liked the diner vibe and the service was o.k. but this is the worst breakfast we could remember having. Hubs had chicken fried steak and it was hammered. I had the huevos rancheros. My eggs were completely raw and the tortillas were dropped on the plate straight out of a stale bag. Additionally, the coffee was toxic. On the upside, the vanilla milkshake was a star. read more

So in all my years of dining out, never have I been looked at, or treated like I did here today. Yes I understand Coronado Island is a money town, but it should treat everyone the same. Yes I'm Mexican American, yes I have tattoos, but my money is also green!!! From the moment my wife and I entered this establishment , we were stared at like we were criminals. An American couple that came in after us was greeted, given menus, silverware , and water as we had just gotten out menus. We were thirsty as we had just concluded a 7 mile walk on the beach, and were not even offered something to drink. So as we sat there waiting for our food hoping that it would make up for the service, wrong, my burger was way over cooked, dry, and flavorless!! My wife's Rueben was tough and dry, I am an executive chef for a well know restaurant in north county and can tell you, my reviews are well received in the community!! Very dry, over cooked hamburger served with no condiments. Plain, tasteless. Fries were ok. But very Expensive for what you get. For that price I can go elsewhere for a quality burger or save money and just do fast food. I was dissapointed this time as well with the root beer float. It was very small - I think they might have given me a child's float but it was still almost $6. My wife's fish and chips had potential but the cook had over cooked them in the fryer so all I could taste was burnt batter. Service was really slow. Won't be back. read more

Found this place by chance while looking for an early morning bite. I really enjoyed the combination of friendly service, excellent food and good coffee in a retro cafe atmosphere. They even have a take out window on the sidewalk for folks who want to "grab and go". Will definitely return to try more of the menu on my next trip to San Diego. Great experience. read more
