Love this family-owned restaurant in the heart of San Marino. Everyone is always so friendly and the place just has a cozy, homey feel to it. They even have an Elvis room, which brings out the character to this restaurant even more! They have a great selection of food, but my favorite is probably their breakfast. I actually went in today for breakfast and saw that they have some new options for bfast up until 11am. I think they also have some new lunch specials that I'll have to try. Today I ordered 2 eggs, bacon, and 1/2 french toast. Everything was cooked to perfection and came out promptly. My brother and I were in a rush but we were sat, served and out the door within 30 minutes! My brother ordered the eggs benedict which I have heard nothing but good things about. It came with a side of o'briens which I am always a fan of. And what they say is definitely true -- the eggs benedict was amazing. I'm gonna have to order that myself next time. Other good dishes I've had includes: the Titan Breakfast -- for the big eaters out there, the Shane Salad which comes with perfectly fried chicken & a special dressing, the French Dip, Corned Beef Reuben, or one of their omelets! But surprisingly this trip to colonial kitchen was quite a different experience. Staff was friendly, but decided to try the new menu items. They weren't the typical diner experience items AT ALL! These were pretty much gourmet meals in a diner-type setting!! My friends and I started off with the Shane's Salad and Chinese Chicken Salad!! OH MY GOD, heaven on earth type stuff. I came here with my boyfriend and his son on July 4 holiday. We sat at the counter to try and get quick service since we were just going for a casual breakfast and my boyfriend likes that they have fresh squeezed OJ. We waited 30 minutes for just pancakes and eggs and one OJ! The staff was nice but we had to flag them down for food and then check. I enjoyed my meal especially my freshly squeezed orange juice! The place is decorated really old fashioned, it seemed like it catered to the senior community a bit more the day that i went. The staff is really nice but theres is only one waitress in the morning taking care of everybody so you she her running around and rushing things a bit. Sadly, todays' owners have gone on the cheap and it shows. The wait staff is on the tipping side of inept, the ugly plastic outdoor seating section is depressing, the filthy bathrooms appalling, and all presented with the most unflattering lighting scheme not even utilized in the frozen food aisle at Vons. Upon entering, you are greeted at with screeching Kenny G adjacent synthesized horn music, syrup spills on the floor not ever addressed, then there was a syrup spill on the seat of the booth ineffectually cleaned and syrup on the table resentfully cleaned up (note to the Health Department) this dining experience can only be regarded as regrettable. I am sure The Colonial Kitchen, if well researched and with the aid of an intelligent marketing strategy would return itself amongst the more charming and delightful places to recommend to loved ones and friends. My family , friends, and I have been eating here for several years. Food is fine. The waitresses and waiters have been there forever and are sweet and helpful as pie. But after today, this establishment has lost my and my family's business over $10. My family had a lovely breakfast, finished paying the bill and were on our way out when the owner refused to let us leave because he said that the bill was calculated incorrectly and we owed another $10. I just feel like I was on a sitecom or something. I got the Chicken Quesadilla, it came with: salsa, guacamole and sour cream. Which wasn't bad, but from the looks of it, it didn't have the authentic taste going on. I think there was mushroom in side my quesadilla. The beau got the Titan Breakfast, that came with: bacon, sausage, eggs and a lot of pancakes. A lot of pancake, that's all I can remember. We both got soda, and with all of this, our bill was able $37. Thankfully for restaurant.com, I got $10 off. So our final bill came up to be just $17. Which isn't bad for 2 people, given, we took home all our leftovers. Pancake! The main reason to eat here is for nostalgia. For me its family nostalgia, but for others it is a like a blast from the past. While maybe not exactly like the 1950s, it certainly feels like the decor is at least 50+ years old, and in a good way, not a run-down way. Our last visit was in Aug. 2021.The food is hearty and filling. It's not a cheap greasy spoon, but the food is good, and they do the usual diner breakfast staples well. As other diners have said, the orange juice machine is fun and makes great juice (it better be for the price they charge for one glass). Many of their dishes are ala-carte. I ordered pigs ina blanket which were three very large pancakes wrapped around small sausage links. I wanted some hashbrowns but that was separate. For more than a decade I drove past this place assuming it must be terrible. Was it the name? The building facade? Who knows. What I can tell you is that they have delicious orange juice. Oddly delicious. My boyfriend feels that they also have some kind of secret with the bacon, he finds it better than other bacon. We have only had breakfast here, so we can't vouch for the lunch or dinner. But the breakfast is really good classic diner food. The decor is great, it really looks like an old school classic diner, and was in fact used as a location in Mad Men. The waitstaff are all great too. Very fast, they fly around that place so quickly sometimes they just look like flashes of light. Coffee always stays filled to the top. It's usually busy but never too crowded.
