We were so excited to finally eat at this legendary restaurant. The food was excellent, Ben the server was fabulous. But at the end, our party of four which was a birthday celebration for an esteemed USC professor, a woman of color, was accosted by the manager while I (the person who paid the $650+ tab) was in the using the bathroom. I returned to the table, ready for all of us to depart at 8:05 (our reservation was for 6pm and we were not late and about to leave). He came to our table and told HER that we needed to "move along." Are you f*cking kidding me?! I'd paid the bill, we were getting ready to leave, then this idiot confronts her and kicks us out. WTF?! It ruined the entire night for us. She was devastated. I thought he was simply doing a check-in, asking how was our dinner? etc. I didn't know what he'd just said to her until we were outside at the valet. I wanted to dropkick his racist head across Culver Bl. I can tell you that. I'd actually unwittingly raved about our experience, unaware of the damage he'd just done to the guest of honor. Go to Mo's a few miles down the road in Playa del Rey. You'll get a better ribeye and competent management and servers. Never going back. read more

Yeah so my girlfriend wanted to come here for the vibes/drinks and honestly the martinis were great. The "Caesar for Two" (getting a regular size isn't an option) was $30 and they lazily make it in front of you after leaving the ingredients sitting next to your table for 10 minutes, so that's a blast. Broccolini was fine but $15 wasn't worth it. But let's get to the chicken, and I realize perhaps I should have gone for the $70 steaks, but it was awful. A chicken parm is traditionally a lightly fried/seasoned chicken with marinara/mozz on top. Figured they could do that. For $40 what we got was a small piece of chicken (you could barely taste it) and a huge amount of mozz heavily deep fried into a hideous ball. And then marinara was served as a dip, pizza hut style. It honestly could have just been a fried ball of mozzarella the way you couldn't even taste a bit of the chicken. Luckily, when I mentioned to the waiter that this wasn't really chicken parm...I got a grunt and he walked away. Total was $151 and it was easily the worst $150+ meal I've ever had. I've been to a lot of fine steakhouses but this was the very BEST I've ever experienced! We were seated in probably the best seat in the house. The artwork was beautiful. The lighting was very romantic and classic. Even my mother said this was one of the best places she's been in since being in New York. Started with the Cameron Coupe cocktail...GET ONE!Had the classic Cesar salad for two to share. The best I've had. Ordered the 18oz ribeye, medium rare, and it was beautiful! It was raining on Tuesday and was originally went to another restaurant but they were closed. We ended up going to Dear John's unexpectedly. When we walked in, it looked dark inside but is a fancy restaurant with a small bar area too. The decorations were very nice and the pictures on the wall were like oldies pictures. An iconic LA establishment, once frequented by Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack. Dear John's first opened in 1962, and have been offering top tier food, cocktails, and ambience since. The candlelit interior is dark and romantic, accented with bright red tablecloths and antique paintings. Chef Josiah Citrin has kept the menu classic mid-century steakhouse, with a few modern twists. We sat in the dining room near the fireplace, which was lovely. Our waiter was sharply dressed and highly professional. You must try a cocktail. Chef Josiah's Manhattan, featuring Chef's Makers Private Select, Carpano Antica, Punt e Mes, Angostura, and Black Walnut Bitters, was exceptional. My husband's Gibson was expertly crafted as well. The Belgian Endive & Citrus Salad was flavorful and fresh, and the French Onion Soup was one of the best renditions I've ever had. I loved the aromatic fresh herbs atop the Garlic Bread. The Bougie Tots (caviar, salon roe, creme fraiche) were absolutely decadent, and a fun treat. Apparently they are a favorite of actress Jamie Lee Curtis. The star of my meal was the Lobster Thermidor. Big chunks of juicy, tender lobster were drenched in a rich, creamy wine sauce, and topped with an oven-browned cheese crust. Unforgettable. My husband enjoyed his 16 oz New York Strip very much as well. We were stuffed, but could not resist dessert. Both the Mascarpone Cheesecake and Cherry Bread Pudding were delicious. Concluded with a shot of perfectly pulled espresso, this was truly a meal to remember. Sadly, Dear John's is permanently closing soon. Honestly I just don't want a hidden gem like this to be mistreated because after all of the years living and visiting LA I have no clue how I never heard of or been inside! The thick velvet curtains when you walk in give a luxurious old school vibe, but once you step into the restaurant itself you realize you stepped into another era. We stopped by to grab some cocktails, and none of them disappointed, but the charcoal margarita was the highlight for real. We stayed for another round just so we could all enjoy this specialty. The mixologist, Albert, was welcoming and engaging in conversation while making sure everyone was well taken care of. You can tell he takes pride in making sure everyone who walks in the door leaves with a smile and a happy heart. I had been wanting to go here forever and finally had my shot this past Saturday eve! All the way from New Jersey! First, the GOOD: Hank our server, was fantastic and full of fun stories and very descriptive on the preparation of all the dishes. He expertly prepared our Ceasar Salad and Steak Tartare tableside. Both were DELICIOUS. The staff in general and service were flawless. Very attentive and accommodating. I requested the JLC table which is marked by a plaque and is right next to the fireplace. The ambience in this cozy little place cannot be beat, it's perfect. An fyi, it is a bit loud as it was fully booked, but not overbearing. Our drinks were great, I had the Aviation, a bit on the sweet side but very enjoyable. We had a lovely bottle of Pinot Noir to go with our entrees. My Uncle had the Sand Dabs in Lemon Caper Butter and loved it! My wife had the Spaghetti and Meatball Special which was absolutely perfect. The house made pasta was so nice and fresh. The two desserts we finished with were fantastic: A Chocolate/Peanut Butter pie with Salted Caramel Ice Cream and a Creamy Cheesecake with Strawberries and Fresh Whipped cream. The Not So Good: We were in a seafood mood going in so with our starters we ordered the Clams Casino special. They came out and the smell was incredible until that first bite. CRACK! Holy moly, I thought I broke a tooth. Same with my wife. This was at the top of the meal so we were getting worried. Again, the taste and prep were phenomenal, but as an East Coast seafood snob, that amount of shell and/or grit was unacceptable. Of the 4 clams, 2 had this problem. 3 of 5 of us ordered Frank's Spaghetti and Clams. Mine had a broken clamshell and I went in very nervous. No bits of shell, but there was some gritty sand in there that really was a bummer. Clams need to be scrubbed and cleaned! My other concern with the dish was it tasted very under seasoned. Needed salt. Needed garlic. Also there was no Pecorino or Parmesan on it at all. That really would have helped. Very bland overall. I really wanted to leave a 3.5 but there's no half stars and honestly the service was truly wonderful. That being said, I really wanted to love it more!!!! There was 4 in our party and we ordered up (it wasn't enough apparently, as our server really pushed us to order more... and more, which I really found odd). Lobster rolls, bougie tots, clam pasta, rib eyes and sides, filthy martinis, we did it up! Most of the items unfortunately were super salty although not cheap. Writing my second review about Dear John's... I had the pleasure of dining here for a Birthday celebration last night. Everything was perfect! The French onion soup was divine, the sand dabs and the chicken parm were so delicious! People love the table side for two Cesar salad, I am not a huge fan of anchovy paste so this is not my favorite salad, but it's not an overpowering flavor at all. The chocolate peanut butter dessert was probably one of my favorite desserts I have had in awhile. All of the staff is friendly and sitting inside is such a great intimate vibe vs outside on the patio. Love this place! read more

So the long-standing Dear John's closed, was revamped, closed again, and now has been revamped for the third and final time. It's on a two year lease and then, that's all she wrote, or so they say. Frankly, this place is now a gold mine. Someone should keep it going. Maybe they will. Just say a place is going to close or a product is going to be discontinued and suddenly, demand skyrockets. Funny how that works. YES, you need a reservation. I'd make one well in advance, as in a week or more. It's a cramped little dining room and we were literally inches away from the folks at the next table. It's a little odd but no big deal. The decor is very old school. Service was friendly but slow. The bus staff also literally removed our salads before we were done because the entrees arrived. That's a big pet peeve of mine but that was really the only slip-up in service. The Caesar salad prepared tableside is a winner. Everyone orders it and I noticed that this is a huge time suck for the wait staff. They spend about 5 minutes preparing the salad and obviously can't work any tables or grab drinks during that time. But the salad is terrific. The cheesy garlic bread (which you have to order as an appetizer) is also outstanding. I went with the cheapest steak (the sirloin) and it was just fine. I also ordered the Cafe de Paris (basically, a rich butter sauce) on the side, and that was good, too. The wife had the sand dabs, which sounds like some alien creature to me, but as far as aliens go, it was very light and tasted really good. Dessert was some chocolate cake/brownie thing. It was about as good as you would expect. Lots of old school cocktails here and they are well made. The place has a lot of energy and gets loud. I assume kids could come but it's really not a good environment for them and there's nothing for them to eat. Sinatra and other jazz standards is the soundtrack here. Fun place for an adult night out. But make reservations and be prepared for possibly uneven service. This place has good food and good drinks but you are mostly here for the atmosphere. read more

I thought Dear John's was a bulk mailer Heidi Flies sent to her clients announcing her abrupt retirement. No, Dear John's is a throw back to yesteryear. It's an old school, LA Confidential, Rat Pack, Mad Men Steakhouse plucked from a Raymond Chandler novel. Is that Sinatra with Don Draper in booth 11 with Mickey Cohen? Who knows, it's too dark to tell. Dark wood all around with old Oils and old Celeb photos take up every inch above eye level. It's Rao's NYC clubby small and you'll need an iPhone flashlight app to see the menu or your date. There is discernible diner's din so if your date is low talker, you're behind two strikes. Crank up the hearing aid. The space is tight, tables are elbow bumpin' close. Half booths line the walls, two tops populate the rest of the room to the bar and every seat sports a butt by 6:00 PM. The Staff: O.G. Steakhouse pro who was as deft as a surgeon with fork and spoon mixing the table side Caesar. Drawing a menu blank? Thank Hank for his advice which you can take to the bank. The Vibe: Who goes there? Those who used to go there. Those who go everywhere LA Eater says they should go. Blue Hairs for whom the thought of schlepping to Taylor's ranks up there with dialysis. The Bar Program: 11 classics and more spirits than a Ghostbuster's re-boot. This is a place where you should be drinking a Martini with your steak or at least to keep the one company you had before you even looked at the menu. My Hendrick's Gin Dirty Martini was as soft as a Mother's touch and as sharp as her slap when I stepped out of line. Just remember that the alcoholic afterglow is going to follow you home so, go easy. The Bar tender can bring it here. The Food: Homage to a time when dining out was a special treat. The menu is small and says, "you've arrived" especially if you're still living in the 50's. Go ahead, tell me where you can find Lobster Thermidor any where in La La Land? Do start with a Caesar mixed table side. Hank's hands were a blur. His fork beat a tattoo against the wooden bowl. Magically, the egg yolk and anchovies emulsified with the rest of the ingredients and the alchemy turned it all it into something Caesar Cardini would be thrilled to have assuming he could get a table here which might be more difficult than believing the dead dine out. Pair that with a loaf of Hans Rockenwagner's house made Parmesan Garlic Bread. 10 inches of bliss. ( ). Feel free to fill in the blank. The signature dish here is the updated Chicken Parm. Nothing Tony and Carm would recognize, but it's a Tinder Date that worked. A breaded and fried Chicken Thigh and Leg stuffed with Ham and Provolone with a cup of Marinara on the side. Think of a three way with Chicken Kiev, Sunday Supper Southern Oven Fried Chicken and Pollo di Involtini involved. I was happy to be a God parent to this Chicken love child. Tender, crunchy, tasty, and so good that sharing is a true test of your civility. The Steak choices are three. New York Strip, Ribeye, and a Ladysteak Filet Mignon. My New York Strip was stripped down to the basics. Excellent quality Prime Beef cooked in booster rocket heat. Medium Rare is how you want this Duke football sized beast served. While you won't need any teeth to eat this beef, a few are recommended in case you want to take a selfie. The Steak had a terrific seared char, was soup spoon tender, flavorful, and thick, yet still juicy. I asked for Bearnnaise and Green Peppercorn Brandy Sauce as an impulse buy to assuage my guilty pleasure yearnings. The Fallen Vegan's Club have their monthly meating (sic) here. German Potatoes with Grilled Onions (something from a Man in the High Castle episode) were zehr gut, nein, groBarig. The Creamed Spinach was more Spinach than cream and save for the one leaf that enhanced my smile after dinner there was nothing left of this. Rotating house made desserts featured a Kit Kat Bar on growth hormones. A large super scoop of Chocolate Chip Ice cream took up half the plate. Another one for Hollywood enthusiasts - "Hello... McFly?" Why on earth would a new owner change an institution and a name linked to the Rat Pack? Lucky's opened and closed within 6 months. RIP. Enter the newly opened (not sure why Yelp still says closed and under renovation) Dear John's. Wow! Fire up the Studebaker (it's old school here with a new not too trendy twist) and head down where the 405 meets Culver Boulevard and try an experience like no other on the West Side. Pitch black in here and I like it - paired with cool blues-jazz music in the background. Very classy yet relaxed. Well worth the trip if your anywhere nearby, especially if the 405 is at a standstill !!! McFly? Onto the FOOD and Accoutrements! One of my clients had recommended the Filet medium which I'm told was absolute perfection with a side of creamed spinach. I went Chicken Parmigiana (this preparation is like no other I've had and an explosion of flavor... lightly breaded chicken, light crispy exterior, stuffed with marinara and cheese). Ridiculous. The music was way too loud for most of the night and the waitress had to repeat on the other side for our small table for 4. The pigs in blanket appetizer she described as Kobe beef in puff pastry. It was not, it was lousy, tough sausage, she did not use the word sausage. Not appealing in the least and the sauce didn't help. If definitely was not Kobe beef, if it started as Kobe beef it became unrecognizable and should be a crime. I had the top sirloin which was excellent. She described the sauce as like A1 like that's a good thing?! Fortunately it didn't need sauce. A few others got the peppercorn sauce and didn't like it either. What a treat!! Absolutely loved dining at Dear John's. You walk in and you immediately feel like you've traveled in time to a very special place. We started our meal with some old fashioned cocktails (seemed appropriate), garlic bread and the Cesar salad that was prepared table side. Such a great salad- so fresh and light. I'm usually not the biggest Cesar salad fan because I prefer my salads to be light and airy not super creamy and this salad was just that! They make the dressing fresh at the table and it's citrusy and just perfect. We then had a filet and for our sides we ordered the mashed potatoes, mushrooms and broccolini. All incredible!! While so full and happy, we were happily our persuaded to end our meal with their delicious cheesecake which was served with mascarpone and some berries. Yum!! Overall loved dining at Dear John's and we'll cannot wait to come back! And a very special shout-out to Hank!! We'd seen the rave reviews in the L.A. Times and had passed this spot many times. We knew it was an old school steak joint. Full admission: I was raised in the 60's with lots of steakhouses so I was a bit surprised this place has gotten so much noteworthy attention. Maybe there's a bit of nostalgia factor involved here. Regardless we decided to go in a Friday night and we're lucky to get in. As expected the menu was wonderfully filled with vintage entrees and sides: sand dabs, steaks, creamed spinach, Caesar salad. We ordered the Caesar for two, steak fries and split a steak. I had an Aviation cocktail and the Mrs. had a glass of Syrah. We loved it all. Know that the prices are steep which we kinda expected. Made a here for the first time on Tuesday for my 45th birthday. My partner, and I were very pleasantly surprised when we entered the building, were greeted by the hostess and passed through the curtains into the main dining area, it felt like we had stepped into a speakeasy. Like a time portal into another era with tasteful jazz & well curated art of many different styles & servers dressed in Tuxedos making Ceasar salads at table side. Our server Chris was no exception, she was hospitable but not overbearing, well informed, but not snooty, and her timing was in rhythm with the jazz and Fervor of everything happening around us. We had cocktails to start with the Caesar salad & Shrimp cocktail. All delicious, served quickly and smartly elevated without losing their sense of tradition (seems to be a theme). For our mains, I had the ribeye with French butter, my date had the chicken parm, with mashed potatoes, broccolini, and sautéed mushrooms. We also shared a lovely bottle of Bordeaux that balanced everything. All the food was perfectly seasoned and cooked & we celebrated life while sharing bites. It was exactly what we were looking for. We enjoyed our evening at this restaurant very, very much. Our server, Yesenia , was excellent in every way. We indulged and over ordered the classic steakhouse meal - Caesar salad for two, steak fries, creamed spinach, garlic bread and ribeye. I also had a martini. The space has a very dark "old-school steak/speakeasy" vibe. We soon adjusted to the dark and enjoyed the scene (once we could see). We had a 530 reservation, and the place filled up very very quickly. The food was commensurate with the prices - all delicious and prepared properly. The Caesar salad made at the table by Yessenia was one of the best I've had. She even brought extra anchovies because I indicated I like them. Yessenia and the other servers really made the night a true pleasure. Drove by this spot a million times, but never went in. We finally decided to give it a try for a birthday dinner. We made reservations several weeks in advance. (Just a quick note, a missed reservation will result in a $25 charge per person so make sure to show up.) The inside is dark and sexy and reminiscent of an old school steakhouse. The outdoor patio is bright with ample heaters all around to keep you warm. There is also a small bar inside that is first come, first serve. The ownership has changed within the last few years and the new menu items are quite impressive. We had the spaghetti with clams, salmon, steak, and the Caesar salad made table side. This is definitely a place you come to for the ambiance. The food is good. All old school. But damn $12 for valet parking. During weekends, maybe understandable as it can get tricky but on a random Tuesday and your lot is empty? Seems a lot. Especially because parking here has always been free! Make sure you get there earlier to get street parking. read more
