The pad ka prow is one of the best foods I've ever put in my mouth. It's a technically perfect food. This deceptively simple dish is a proper balancing act of salty, sour, spicy, and umami. Mixing the runny egg with the rice and seasoned ground meat creates this this fluffy rice concoction that you won't want to stop shoveling into your gullet. Top this with the spicy little side of sauce it comes with... and you'll be stuck in a loophole, only eating pad ka prow for breakfast, lunch, and dinner... day after day... like I did. Probably some of the best Thai food in Austin, definitely in the top 5 for me. The pad ka pow is excellent and the sauce provided adds a spiciness with flavor. The om gai is a great soup, subtle flavor in a clean broth, but very satisfying. I recommend putting the entire rice into the soup and letting it get slightly mushy. I stumbled across this food truck while working at the cafe next door, but seeing all of the great reviews of their Thai food on Yelp, I knew I had to give it a try. Everything can be ordered using your phone, and beware that the wait can get pretty long. I ordered mine at 5 PM on a Wednesday, and the wait was over 30 minutes. I ordered their famous Pad Kaprow and the Mango Sticky Rice. I've never tried pad kaprow, so I didn't know what to expect (especially with their warning for spice!), but it was basically a lightly fried minced pork with egg over a bed of rice. I'm not a huge fan of minced meat anything, but I enjoyed eating this! It wasn't as spicy as I was initially worried about, but their chili sauce can make it much hotter if you want that extra kick. But my favorite was their mango sticky rice. It came with a teensy bit salty coconut milk that you can pour over fresh slices of mango and sticky rice. Although I was initially surprised at why they decided to use unsweetened coconut milk, I think the little bit of saltiness of the coconut milk complimented the sweetness of the mango and the sticky rice well! DEE DEE's food brought my memories of Thailand back to my taste buds! We basically ordered almost everything they had on their menu. Som Tom was crunchy and fresh and came with a tub of fish sauce dressing. Pad Kaprow was delicious with a fried egg. Laab Moo was refreshing and also savory. The mango sticky rice was good but was a bit small. Last note, you should take their spice level very seriously we got +1 level of spice on everything and it was already so spicy. I was on Youtube and the video from Munchies told the story about Dee Dee. I was on a mission to visit them and try out the infamous food truck. Having visited Thailand recently, I was looking for that authentic feeling of being there again without having to travel 18 hours on a flight to get there. This food truck in Austin is worth writing home about. There was already a line at 6pm and the wait for food was going to be about 45 minutes (he'll text you when the food is ready). It was going to be well worth the wait. For dinner we had the Laab Moo and the Pad Kaprow with extra prik nam pla. Both are pork dishes prepared with a different style. I liked the Laab Moo because it was exactly the spice level that I wanted and the sticky rice was good for putting out the fire in my mouth. The Som Tom prepared at spice level 10 (bring on the hotness) is the way Lakana prefers it and definitely had the freshest ingredients. I really like papaya salad and if you're adventurous, try it Issan style for a more pungent flavor. Trust me, you'll grow to love it if you like unique flavors. No meal is complete without mango sticky rice which was on point. Presentation wise it was 5/5 and beautifully prepared. If you're looking for something truly authentic, this is worth checking out. Parking is impossible if you have a truck so plan accordingly and if you have to circle around the block, do that instead of rolling the dice with the risk of getting towed on private property. read more

Dee Dee makes the best tasting pad kra pao. first, it's ground pork, which seems kind of hard to find in austin, and second, doesn't have the extra mystery brown sauce. the latter lets the spices and pork flavour shine. the eggs are perfect every time. I don't really eat vegetables and fruits but Dee Dee's mango sticky rice is quickly changing my mind on that. I ate almost all the mango last time. It's a must get. Dee Dee is the Thai food truck at Radio, joining the ranks of Veracruz! Came through for an early dinner with a good friend after some beers elsewhere. We wanted someplace relaxing, jeans/tee vibes, and outdoors. We didn't know that Dee Dee was at Radio Coffee, but I'm so glad that they are here for those of us that don't make it out to East Atx as often as we'd like. I wanted something light, but also pescatarian-friendly. They have lots of meat options, and if I recall correctly, only a select few veg/pesca options...so I went with the cold Som Tum Issan (green papaya salad with blue crab and rice) on a hot day. I wish the rice wasn't literally given all saran wrapped up, but I guess it makes sense to present it that way instead of pre-mixing it in the salad. The blue crab was a nice touch--(psst: y'all are supposed to eat the whole crab shell and all), but I would have liked some more meat in it. I got like 99% shell and like 1% meat, but the portions are huge. I packaged my leftovers for lunch the next day, so that was a score. Also, they use deliciously spicy Thai peppers, so be sure to tell them mild-med-spicy if you're not used to that kind of sweating heat. The wait took a solid 20 minutes, which was kind of surprising considering I had a cold dish and my friend had one of their meat entrees. We were able to snag a spot which is hard to come by during peak hours at Radio, so we killed time people watching and enjoying the spring heat. Pricing is typical for a sit-down Thai spot. The menu is more unique than your run-of-the-mill Thai restaurant. You won't see any pineapple fried rice or pad see ew here, which is a refreshing change. Whenever I go to a Thai place, I always pretend to browse the menu and then just end up ordering the Pad Thai. However, at this place, I was forced to be cultured as there was no Pad Thai. And boy, was I glad to be forced to step out of my comfort. Food was delicious! We got the Pad Kaprow, Som Tom, and Mango Sticky Rice. The spice level was very satisfying in the Pad Kaprow, but not quite enough to pack a strong punch. The pork was tasty, but a little on the salty side (or it could be the amount of fish sauce I poured over it. The egg was slightly overcooked, and so the yolk didn't spread well over the rice. :( however it got way better from there. The mango sticky rice was AMAZING. It was just sweet enough, and the mango was R I P E. The rice was W A R M. It was an all around excellent experience. However, the star of the show was the SOM TOM. The papaya salad was FULL OF FLAVOR. Omg, I am a huge meat eater, but I will gladly sacrifice meat to get another taste of that salad. It was a beautiful symphony of contrasting textures, notes, and flavors. And oh boy, the juice/sauce is soooo tasty I can drink it like juice. This Thai food truck located in the yard housing Radio Head Coffee & Beer is often described as very "authentic". Why? Yes, their food is flavorful and fragrant, but it also possesses a legitimate Thai spice level of heat! The boy ordered the *Pad Kapow* (spicy stir-fried pork sautéed in homemade chili paste) and the *Moo Ping* pork skewers. They took an eternity too because the husband and wife duo were backed up on orders, some of which were made through the phone as well. When the food did make it to us, it was devoured very quickly. I honestly couldn't handle the Pad Kapow; it was way too spicy! The boyfriend devoured it, but he definitely felt it the next day, haha. The skewers thankfully were well marinated and very sweet. The skewers themselves were not very big, but they did come with a ball of sticky rice which was not only fragrant but somewhat sweet and coco-nutty too. Home-cooked Thai food from a seemingly nondescript truck is always a win. However, I wish they would offer an "American" level of spice for those, like me, who can't handle astronomical levels. It's funny how some of the highest rated places in Austin are food trucks. This place popped up on my latest trip to Austin. We swung by for dinner and ordered the pad kaprow, the laab moo, and the som tom for entrees and the had their special dessert since mangos were out. The pad kaprow was my favorite it came with rice and an egg, the laab moo was a super spicy version, it was quite similar so I'd recommend something else. The som tom was good. It was really nice to have a Thai food truck among the hundreds of pizza and taco trucks (which don't get me wrong, I still enjoy but can certainly appreciate some variety). The overall consensus from our group was that the Pad KaPow was the favorite but dang their lowest spice level is still decently spicy. I wouldn't say I'm a pro at handling spice but I can enjoy some "regular" spiced Korean food. Even though I selected the lowest spicy option (which they do note is still spicy), it had a solid kick to it. The moo ping was delightfully charred with a refreshing and light acidic sauce of cilantro, pickled onions, and I'm guessing fish sauce? DE-LI-CIOUS. With a side of sticky rice, this combination was absolutely divine and reminded me of when I was younger, going to tet fairs where vendors would constantly sell out these delectable meats on a stick. It definitely wasn't as good as the one we had in Bangkok but it was the best we have had in the US. It comes as a huge portion and so flavorful. They operate on a limited menu as everything is made to order which is great for that indecisive side of me. This also means that everything they offer they really know how to make well! My favorite food truck during my short Austin trip. I have a tendency to stick to my comfort zone - the usual pad thai and pad see ew. This was my first time experiencing northern thai street food, and it was memorable. My mouth waters when looking back at the old photos on my phone and yelp. If spicy food is your cup of tea, you're at the right place! I like medium spiciness for my Thai cuisine, which is apparently spicing down when I was ordering. I had the pad kaprow (spiced down), and it was the perfect heat. In fact, I poured the fish sauce with chili over the entire pad kaprow. I am a fan of that spicy stir-fried pork! My friend ate the exact same dish, and it was too spicy for her with the tongue burning & nose running. I say proceed with caution on the spices - everyone is different. To be safe, it might be a good idea to spice down unless you can truly handle the heat. If you're looking for something soupy, go for the om gai. My friend thoroughly enjoyed her chicken in that flavorful, chili paste broth. I also recommend the tofu stir-fry for the vegetarians out there. Thirsty? Get the thai iced tea; their creamy layer was not too sweet. I wish my stomach had more room to try more off their menu. My eyes wanted to try the mango sticky rice. Dee Dee is also next to another food truck that serves Mexican cuisine. Parking may be difficult to find as it is all street; no luck on a private parking lot. The moo ping had amazing flavor. The downside is cost. The moo ping is very small for the money. $7 for two small skewers just made me sad I didn't have more. The sticky rice is also a little too dense. It takes a lot of work to break it down which is pretty inconvenient for the food truck model. Plastic cutlery doesn't work well here. So far, out of 5 restaurants tried, there's only 1 I would go back to. It is located in a very popular spot Radio Coffee and cocktails, where you can come enjoy drinks, a nice and spacious patio and 3 food trucks including Dee Dee. We tried the famous papaya salad (with the pungent crab which might be too strong for some but I personally love it!), the laab moo and the Mango sticky rice. Everything was packed of flavors and super fresh. Warning : it. is. spicy!!! Even going down from 8 chilies to 6 chilies for the papaya salad, it made me cry... I could feel the love and passion that the owners had for what they were making! The thai tea is also nothing to be forgotten about. Different location, same great food, better ambience. Dee dee moved its location to the south side of the town and it only got better! It's located next to the Radio Bar that serves drinks for all the food trucks around the bar and there is a lot of space to sit down and enjoy the food and its atmosphere. This awesome trailer puts out some of the best Thai cuisine I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing. When it comes to Thai food I'm usually familiar with Green Curry and Pad Thai, but these Thai recipes come from a different region of Thailand and all I can say is everything I've tried here has been superb. Om Gai dish stands for "Oh-My-God-Absolutely-Incredible" because it really is incredible. Never had anything like it, and you never will unless you go to Thailand. The chicken is really good, love the lemon and dill broth, the flavors are phenomenal and very smooth, I get it all the time. The Pad Kapow is a real hit, another go-to dish of mine, so flavorful and fresh. I love the pork mixed with the rice and just the right seasoning, there's cukes in there along with a fried egg that really mixes well and hits the spot and cleanses your palate. It's also a unique dish and like nothing you've ever had, I can't get enough of that Pad Kapow. I do have their Thai Tea on occasion which I find to be very robust and flavorful - I highly recommend. Moo Ping - oh my - so damn tasty. I can't get just 2, gotta get four of these tasty BBQ skewers of marinated meat. Wonderful food on the go. The Mango with Sticky Rice absolutely ROCKS! I love this dessert! They give you tons of mango slices, very fresh, and there's sweet coconut milk layered all over and it's on a bed of sticky rice. So fresh, so quality good. I would call it a very refreshing and tasty dessert. I've had the Laab Moo too - it's very good, lots veggies, but very spicy. It's so good that I make myself deal with it. The Tofu Stir Fry which is next on my list as it gets lots of rave reviews. But what keeps me coming back here is really simple - - the couple that owns this trailer are first class and extremely nice. They are eager to please and are always accommodating no matter how busy they get. The consistency and execution here is flawless - - I always get the same quality and quantity no matter what time of the day, it's always fresh and tastes great. There are no inconsistencies here, no issues, no breakdowns - - they've got a good thing going here and they do a great job running this trailer. I have only come to Dee Dee a couple of times out of convenience: the first was while waiting for a La Barbeque order (which is no longer quite in the same area) and the second was to get something sweet, since it was a short walk from some of the breweries. Dee Dee warrants a visit on its own. I only have two things to base this review on: mango sticky rice and Thai iced green tea. The mango sticky rice has a large amount of mango on it - I expected to see a higher rice to mango ratio, so it was a pleasant surprise both times I've had it here. Dee Dee is Dee-licious! It's a northern thai street food, food truck. Visiting from Houston, Texas for the weekend, we wanted something unique to eat that can only be found in Austin. Unlike your ubiquitous, normal pad thai and curry, Dee Dee is offering up some delicious, less well known Thai dishes like Pad Kaprow, Laab Moo, Som Tom, and Tofu stir frys. My personal favorite was their Laab Moo because I'm a firm believer in the spicier the Thai food, the better! The Laab Moo is the spiciest dish on their menu, but all spice levels can be adjusted. Laab Moo is stir fried minced pork with thai chilis, mint, lime, onions, cilantro, in a savory Thai sauce. It comes with refreshing cucumbers on the side for crunch and some sticky rice for dipping. For $10/ box, the portion is HUGE and filling. This 1 dish can easily be split between 2 people, especially if you add an egg for a little extra protein. After washing it all down with their creamy Thai tea, we were in Northern Thai food heaven. There are plenty of picnic tables and chairs available outside. But on those hot, Texas summer days, the bar next door is nice enough to share with Dee Dee. They actually encourage you to order, have a seat inside the bar next door, get a drink if you want, and they text you when your food is ready. DEE DEE was my favorite restaurant in Austin for the first few years I lived here. Where else could you find Thai food _this_ good and authentic? So even writing a 4 star review pains me, but I think they're a victim of their own popularity right now. They recommend you order before 3pm for dinner now. Online online, and impersonal. I just can't do that. That puts them entirely out of my rotation. I could go to the grocery store and cook up a stir fry at home in the time that takes. Luckily, I went on a super cold day and got my food pretty quickly, and--for the most part--- they're still great. I feel like they went down a notch since 2 years ago, and they toned down the default "thai spicy" level. I guess too many gringos complained. Still, I say go try it. But I hope they open a brick and mortar to keep up with demand and offer a reasonable service again. read more

We've been wanting to try this place forever because a few of our friends have been raving about it for a while now. Tonight was the perfect opportunity since we were already south, and we ordered quite a bit off the menu. Overall, the food was good, but considering the to-go aspect of everything and the fact that you're assembling dishes yourself (with no guidance as to what sauce goes with what btw), it was pricey for DIY. The Pad Kaprow was nice and spicy--lots of flavor. Som Tom papaya salad was the usual fare, but did taste rather fresh--there was a bit too much fish sauce that we didn't love. Tofu stir fry was OK (uber standard Asian fare), but it was positively SWIMMING in sauce, so the whole thing ate soggy. Pickled stuff was fine. The mango sticky rice was just weird. Here's the description: "Mildly sweet Thai dessert. Sticky rice massaged & soaked in coconut milk overnight w/ sliced ripe mango and a coconut milk drizzle on top." Here's what we got: a block of cold sticky rice, some sliced mango on top, and a ramekin of coconut milk...uh, so yeah, not so much. We have to say that this is one of the more friendly QR systems that we've used, but Dee Dee automatically adds a 20% gratuity, which we find so offensive and infuriating. We usually tip *more* than that, but went down to 15% precisely because they unashamedly were forcing our hands. Bottom line is that the value just isn't there for this place. We didn't have a bad meal, per se, but we didn't have a great one, and what with the filthy tables and the swarms of flies, we left unimpressed. Prob not again for us but who knows. read more

Amazing Food! We wanted to order the mango sticky rice only, but since they had a $10 minimum, we ordered the chicken stew as well, and we are sooo glad we did! The chicken stew was sooo soothing, it was exactly what I needed. It was spicy, fresh herbs and yet light. It also had good chuck of veggies and chicken. I am a big fan of this dish. The mango sticky rice also tasted perfect! Mango was sweet and coconut milk was not overly sweet. I loveeee this place! read more

Food tastes really great, I wish they have more options on sale though. When my friends and I got there around 7pm on Saturday, everything was almost sold out. And most of them are spicy, so my husband (who can't handle too much spice) didn't have much options but the tofu stir fried. You can sit outside and have a beer The owners are so kind and sweet couple and they both woking very hard non stop .
