Second Friday night I've posted up at this new-to-me, but established in 2016, Chinese grill. I lived 40 plus years in the Pacific Northwest, and recently moved here (Tempe, March 2023) I wasn't initially missing genuine Chinese food. By now, this is the top place for this kinda grub. One item of note that I didn't seen in recent reviews is the parking lot: postage stamp sized! Just be warned. The young man on both occasions advised of a wait time. The other employees merely were cleaning folks. He was the only server, and doubled as host with the most. This poor kid was getting his ass kicked all night. So if it's busy because of the parking lot, then strap in with some patience. Trust me it'll be worth the wait! The decor is heavy on reds, oranges, yellows to coincide with the "flame" motif. The music is a grip disjointed from the clientele and decor. Honestly, if it's not distracting me from the food ... I'm good with it. My inaugural visit I ordered: Kung Fu Chicken, and washed down with Mango Pineapple smoothie. My recent visit I ordered: Emperor's Bone Broth Fried Rice, and Fried Chicken ice cream (looks and feels like fried chicken but it's really ice cream!) Awesome food, great decoration, and excellent service. Lemon chicken was perfect, kung fu chicken was great too, so all the chickens are prob good. Fried dumplings and chili dumplings also both delicious. Everything we got was well worth price in taste and portions. Very fast too. All good things from this place. read more

We stopped through Phoenix on our way from LA to Tucson. We were looking for some authentic Asian food, and came across this through Yelp reviews. We were so pleasantly surprised by the flavors of the food, the incredibly nice wait staff, and the fun ambiance. We ordered the Northern China Hotpot and some sides. Portion is very generous. The soup base has that Szechuan peppercorn numbing spice. Be ready for some heat and flavors. read more

Used to be one of my favorite restaurants in the Valley when I lived there a few years back. Just recently went back for nostalgia and they have gotten rid of the best menu items in favor of cheaply made orange chicken. The decor has gotten out of hand with dusty anime banners on the patio and aggressively bright LED displays out the front parking lot as if that's gonna draw in more customers. Would be nice to have the open patio actually open instead of covered up by excessive decorations that add nothing to the atmosphere of the restaurant except make you claustrophobic and anxious while eating. Sad to see such a gem of a restaurant loose track of what really matters to its patrons. read more

The mysterious "service fees" titled "SVC" charge MUST be disclosed to customers before they dine. I'm sorry, I don't believe this practice is fair or ethical when it appears on the bill at the end of the meal. Dragon Flame adds a ~ 4% SVC tip onto your bill. Not okay by me and I won't return. The food: was good, but nothing to write home about. How about 11.99 for one of their famous ice cream chicken wings that was as hard as a rock. I couldn't bite into it or cut it with a knife. The server offered to microwave it. No thank you. How about beef skewers with "fat skewers" mixed in? Not appetizing. Ambiance - how about 2 small dogs barking while you try to have a conversation with your partner. I guess we should've expected this next to ASU. No, they can do a lot better even for the college crowd! This place is a hard pass! read more

Food is not even close to authentic, and it doesn't even taste good. The beef skewers we're laughable when it comes to the amount and taste; they were mostly pieces of fat covered in cumin. The service was "interesting"; we were greeted by a young lady who overhyped certain items in the menu, but you had to order everything on your phone. Not a lot of options in the menu, and 90% sounded like Panda Express items. Everything is pricey! We had an order of lemon chicken, an order of the worst skewers I've ever had in my life, and an order of dumplings and two waters for about $65. When we walked in, the place was deserted; that should've been our sign to leave as it was Sunday during lunch time. Extremely dissatisfied, I would never be back. read more

The food tasted delicious. We ordered the Orange Chicken, the cucumber salad, chicken skewers with pita bread, chicken egg rolls, white rice and dumplings. While everything tasted good and we were enjoying the experience when we looked behind us a cockroach was on the wall. My friend killed it but the roach also killed our enjoyment. Then when I was dipping the pita bread in the orange chicken sauce a long hair came up from the sauce. That was the nail on the coffin as now we went from enjoying the food to worrying about getting sick. When we brought these two items to the servers attention we were told that this was not the first time a customer had made these complaints and they would let management know again about the roaches and the hair. This is why although the food was good I gave this place a low score because the clealiness aspect could have been so much better. Had we not found a roach and a hair this would have been a great experience because the food was good, the portions were large and the service although a little slow was not bad. Please do better, fumigate the bugs and wear a hair net. FYI: We did not take pictures of the roach nor hair and we did not ask for a free meal because of this. We simply informed the staff of the issue, decided to not return to the restaurant again and made this yelp review to let others know what they can expect. read more

I don't know another Chinese Restaurant in the USA serving such unique genuine Northern Chinese dishes. My Chinese wife loved it. Be forewarned the portion size of some of the dishes are "large". Especially the delicious Northern Hot Pot. The owner spent some time chatting to us and the chef also came out to see if we were enjoying our food. But the BIGGEST issue - our son has a peanut allergy and we specified the noodles that they needed to be peanut free (told the server verbally) and there were still peanuts. It looked like they had scooped out the peanuts they accidentally put in because it wasn't as much as the in the photos but clearly had peanut crumbs! Stopped by for some late dinner. The two employees quickly approached us and asked where we wanted to sit. We decided inside. There was one other table of about eight customers dining in so it wasn't busy. The employee quickly brought us the menu (it's on iPad) and showed us how to use it. We looked it over and decided we were going to share two main dishes and I wanted a soup. We also got an iced tea, a komquat juice, and some water. We placed our orders and waited. The inside is very much cluttered. It's so cluttered it actually feels dirty, and the table we were sitting at was very sticky. We ordered a sweet and sour pork rib plate, chicken fried rice, and a chicken egg flower soup. There seemed to be a lot of commotion and confusion going within the table next to us, so we were glad when they left. We got our food and we began to eat. The chicken fried rice needed flavor and a lot of the chicken had rubbery chewy pieces on it, ew. The rib dish was ok, but not spicy at all. The meat had a lot of fatty pieces on it that we were not expecting.. Now for the best part?! The soup!!! It's delicious! It was so good that I even asked for a second one. I called the employee over to order me a second one, and he weirdly looked at me and said, "it's not free." Not sure if he was trying to be funny or not, but obviously I knew it was not free and I was ordering a second one. He then decided to clean the table right next to us as we are eating, with Lysol and it did not go well with our food. Maybe he could've wiped it down with just water? No one wants to be smelling cleaning chemicals as they are eating.. All in all, the soup is the best and I would go back for some more, but maybe get it to go. It's $3.99 for a medium sized bowl. That front guy working is extremely hard working. That worker is a machine, serving college students, fast with everything, efficient with every move, even helped out a customer with a bandaid. Dragon Flame has become one of my favorite restaurants in the valley. The food is phenomenal every time I've visited with the spicy laomian being a personal favorite. The restaurant itself has a lot of personality being decorated top to bottom and has a nice little patio area that's great for eating at night. The restaurant uses a QR code and website for ordering but it's usually easy enough to flag down a worker if you need anything while eating. The owner seems like a really great guy who cares about the customers in his store. Almost every time I've been in he makes sure to check and make sure that the food is good and to see if we need anything, and often has offered free samples of new menu items. This is a spot that I try to tell everyone I know about and bring family to as it's never let me down. Me and my girlfriend love this place so much we've even made a tradition of coming in every Valentine's Day. The flavor you get is unbeatable and the prices are extremely generous as long as you know what you're ordering. Many dishes appear pricier but are very large servings and definitely best to be shared. I recommend stopping in for a great local spot if you're in Tempe. read more

I'm not into destroying a business especially off of one visit but I am the least picky eater ever and I also know food professionally. I ignored the reviews and gave this place a shot. As soon as I walk in I'm seated great hosts, but there was a giant cockroach on the wall next to my table. The host screamed bloody murder when she saw it. The chef came out the kitchen and killed it with a napkin, I didn't see or know if he truly washed his hands but I wanted to get up from the table and leave but decided to give them the benefit of doubt. I ordered the lamb skewers recommended by the host, and the qing noodles. I know lamb has a gamy taste but this lamb tasted like meat that's been sitting out for a while or spoiled and then cooked. I know food I love lamb I eat it all the time... this was bad. The noodle ramen type dish had a weird taste but wasn't terrible... I think I was paranoid not being able to see the bottom of my bowl after seeing the giant roach, or being unaware if the kitchen and facility was truly sanitized. I was offered chop sticks which were not disposable they were wooden and a pair that's recycled. Now wooden cookware and utensils need to be boiled after each use to truly "clean" them and I know all this restaurant had done was a little soap and water... so the thought of those chopsticks not being sanitized properly really paranoid me. These two stars are because the host was pleasant and hospitable, although young she's on her way I can tell. I could not finish my food, I took it to go just to throw it in the trash because I was embarrassed. I paid and also tipped . Do not go here for sanitization standpoint only. read more

One of them was coughing and puking up a little The owner was lecturing us on true Chinese food and literally ridiculed us for ordering orange chicken. So we came to this restaurant because of all the hype on IG we couldn't wait to try the French bulldog ice cream and the rest. They were very busy when we got there and the place didn't look anything like on the internet which it happens so no biggie there. We sat down ordered the lemon chicken, emperor fried rice, and ramen. When we first got the lemon chicken it had a pungent smell like something my mom used to mop the floors. We tried it and immediately returned the dish, Shelly who I believe is the manager stated there was a chef in training and systems weren't working. She stated that they would bring out another dish for us and left quickly to put out other fires with other customers. We didn't want another lemon chicken, so I got up went inside and got a hold of the manager and she insisted that they would make us another lemon chicken the right way and any other dish we wanted on the house. By this time the "emperor" fried rice came out and it is made with briyani rice and didn't taste like fried rice (granted it was the only thing we ended up eating). They brought out the lemon chicken again and it was still disgusting. We got the orange chicken cuz we thought they can't mess that up and sure enough they did. Orange chicken was bland literally no flavor. We got the ramen and same the taste and smell we're disgusting. We ended up asking the waitress for the owners info and to take everything off our bill, we agreed to pay for the fried rice. I want to start off by saying our waiter was absolutely amazing. Came here on a Sunday evening and, while the place isn't tiny, the waiter was working alone to both serve and bus all of the tables and by the looks of it we had come just after dinner rush. He was kind, attentive, and quick despite not having help. At this restaurant they have you order through your phone which I found to be a positive change of pace but I could see it being a problem for older patrons who are less adept. We ordered the beef skewers, cumin wings, fried dumplings, and chicken sesame noodles. Everything came out hot and picture-perfect just like their menu. The beef skewers were tender and juicy with plenty of seasoning and just the right amount of spice. The cumin wings were beautifully crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The dumplings were crisp and pillowy with a sauce that complimented the filling perfectly and the noodles were perfectly cooked with tons of meat and the perfect amount of that lovely sesame flavor, not oily at all. Something to note is their wings are not butchered in your typical way so they have slightly less meat than a whole drumstick but you get a lot of them so you're still getting your money's worth. During our meal the owner stopped by to chat and told us this is so that the marinade can penetrate the meat more evenly and deeply and it shows. They would go perfectly with some beer or liquor which is definitely the plan for next time. ;) Overall this place is stellar, great service, fun and casual atmosphere, and amazing authentic Chinese food. read more

I ordered 2 dishes: 1] Chong Qing Noodle 重庆小面 [1] Cumin Lamb Noodle 孜然羊肉面 I had never eaten here before but my options were limited due to the late hour. Neither of the 2 dishes were edible. The lamb was grounded but parts of it were rubbery and slimy in texture much like chicken skin when it's boiled. They put the meat on top of a bed of tasteless spaghetti noodles. It was like having spaghetti with only cumin seasoning on it. Very bland and nasty. And trust me, I am not a picky eater. The Chong Qing Noodle was so spicy it over powered my pallet. I tried a few bites but the other flavors were not helping this dish at all. The chef just threw seasonings, chilli flakes, peanuts and some limp veggies together with lamb and bland spaghetti noodles. I will not order food from the Chinese flaming grill ever again. 2 out of 2 dishes were inedible and gross. Neither one tasted like Chinese food at all. read more

Menu items are priced $12+ but portions are so big the value is better than Panda Express. Mostly take-out and delivery focused atmosphere when I was there enjoying in person. However the server was friendly and helpful. No soy sauces, chopsticks, or fortune cookies offered with takeout order but maybe I just have to ask next time. I think the Orange Chicken is best I've had in Arizona after 15 years in Phoenix. Bone broth chicken fried rice was delicious. Dumplings were to die for. The Food is amazing and authentic. Plus the owner is really funny, as he puts some of his humor within the menu calling normal orange chicken fake Chinese food and offering you some of the best pineapple and lemon chicken instead. One thing to mention as-well is the cutlery and plating, chopsticks and silverware are custom made, not some cheap bs. Service is quick, and very helpful. But there's always something's to improve on, however these are not dealbreakers. The online menu didn't include any allergens. I'd suggest a menu update with the a least dairy, Nuts and fish marker letting the customer know. although with a quick question the server told us what was in the dish. Last critic is the water, it's 50cents comes in a bottle. It's a small restaurant and soda industrial drinks machines are expensive Overall would definitely come here again. If you're reading this, just go try it. You won't regret it. Both the food flavor and the quality are exceptional. They take a lot of care in making their food, from buying great ingredients to spending a lot of time making it. The soups are stewed for a very long time to get the most nutrition and flavor from the ingredients. My wife and I were commenting on how rich the flavors are and how much they "stick" to you, when the owner came by and told us how he does it. Service is good, and we had our food pretty quickly. The prices are good, and the portions are huge. There are a wide variety of menu options, but I have to recommend the Chong Qing noodle bowl if you like spicy, rich soups. Amazing flavor, and very filling. My wife had the lamb noodle bowl, which is hearty and tasty but not at all spicy. The lamb was super tender and tasty. Oh yeah, there's no MSG in the place, and they get sweetness from things like goji berries instead of just adding sugar like most Americanized Chinese places do. I'm confused by the one star and two star reviews, as well as the ludicrous accusation that they give free food for good reviews. At no point was anything like that even hinted at. read more
