I've been going to Dragon Well for close to 20 years as a staple in the Marina District. Their wok tossed prawns are divine and although it seems they switched the recipe, they still are giant plump shrimp coated in batter and a tangy sauce that is perfect with a side of brown rice. Their potstickers are enormous and stuffed with tender pork and cabbage filling. Definitely a must starter. And their chinese chicken salad can be defined as "refreshing", with cilantro and a light dressing. Those 3 are my staples but their beef dishes are equally good. I love dragon well. We order dragon well take out probably at least once a month. It gets the job done, large portions and delicious! We always get the fried rice (my fav fried rice in sf, besides Benihana If that tells you anything about me) sautéed veggies with chicken, Mongolian beef, and the pork pot stickers. I've never had a bad meal here- only once did they forget my chicken with my veggies but they give you SO MUCH that it's okay. Dragon Well is hands down the best Chinese in the marina. Dragon well was quite a surprise for us. We wanted to try something new and it was a pleasant surprise. Alex took care of us and he was wonderful. The tofu was superb and tasty and so were the other dishes. There was a level of authenticity in the dishes. The portions were generous and we could box some for the next day. This is perhaps the only Chinese resturant in that area which is easy to miss. We will be back to try more items. read more

I love Dragon Well! If you are looking for fresh, tasty, and healthy (depending on what you get of course) this is the place to go! I struggled finding good local (marina neighborhood) chinese food that isn't dripping in oil/ grease until I found this place. I think we go here at least a few times a month for a quick pickup. My go to order is the veggie fried rice, wonton soup, kung pao chicken. I've had several other dishes that are delicious also. All full of flavor and can be ordered gluten free (most of the dishes here seem to be be offered gluten free style which is a plus for me). Would definitely recommend! read more

Super yummy meal in this cozy, modern Chinese place in Cow Hollow. We enjoyed the chicken lettuce cups, Mongolian beef, walnut shrimp and mu shu pork. All were exceptional, with very fresh ingredients. Even the mu shu pancakes were clearly homemade. Business was brisk, but we were not rushed. Today, facing a dearth of outdoor seating options (we had our dog) we sat outside on spectacularly uncomfortable metal chairs, waited 10 minutes for menus, finally ordered, excrutiatingly slow service. After having found this place there is no other Chinese food I'll eat in town (except Mister Jiu's in Chinatown!). Food: On our most recent visit, we ordered green tea; beef chow fun; savory, sweet, stir-fried beef; and tea-smoked duck. This was enough for two people's dinner, plus leftovers. Dragon Well Green Tea : Mild and enjoyable. The menu said it was wok-roasted. I did not pick up on the roasted flavor, but my boyfriend did. Beef Chow Fun : Satisfying. Savory, Sweet, Stir-fried Beef : We both liked the texture of the broccoli, which was cooked, but still a bit crisp. My boyfriend really enjoyed this dish, though I was not quite in the mood for sweetness. Tea-Smoked Duck : Overall good. Had a definite smoked aroma, and tasted of tea. It was interesting, but in general, we like the taste of duck on its own, so probably prefer more traditional preparations of peking duck. It looked like something was born out of an alien egg sack and it came in the form of broccoli. My tofu was slimy and if you asked me what the flavoring was I couldn't tell you. This is the type of place that will use more vegetables or fillers and it doesn't match the photo on the menu. The hot and sour soup was not all that hot or sour. The dragon beef and crystal prawns were okay, but not memorable. The one standout was the lemon grass chicken, which carried some kick and was our favorite. We had to wait 30 minutes for a table (hostess told us 15), but once seated the service was great. Dragon Well is the best Chinese restaurant in San Francisco. They use only the very best ingredients prepared in the traditional Chinese way (this is why pre-pandemic, so many Chinese tourists could be found there); and over the 20+ years they have been in business, have not raised their prices very much. Like all restaurants during Covid, they have been under stress-so the normal cheer at the counter is perhaps somewhat diminished. But the Tan family is warm, welcoming and competent and it is always a joy to see them.
