    Egg custard tart
    Sandy N.

I was looking for a spot to grab something sweet & found this spot. There was a small crowd outside the shop. They make you order things outside the shop and they go and get it for you. I got a red bean moon cake & a couple of egg custard tarts. They were served warm and fresh. The tarts were delicious. Warm filling and a flaky crust. The moon cake was thick, warm and slightly sweet. Yum! They have their bakery items in a window in the front of the store. And they have a table set up with prices of their items and drinks. They are cash/Venmo only.

    Baked BBQ Pork Bun

Stopped by here while exploring Chinatown and got a baked bbq pork bun. I paid $3 which is on the high end of what I would normally pay for a baked bbq pork bun. The flavor was good but I've had a lot better, and there was too much bread compared to filling. Not to mention the bread could have been better. The place itself is a to-go bakery so there isn't any seating. And they take cash or Zelle.

$69 for a 10" coffee crunch, think $9X for the 12? $45 for 8"... that wonderful 101 year old recipe. Lighter than a tiramisu, but sweeter. Their egg custard tarts are sub-par. Not very good at $3. Wont b ordering that again!

While walking around China town, I came across this stand. They had a few bakery items on display. You order from them in the front as you cannot go inside. They have a window with the items they have and pricing on the wall. I ordered a mini moon cake since it was the occasion. I didn't know what to expect from it. It has a thin soft but firm dough on the outer layer and the inside is a dense texture. Not sure what it was. I got a bag an almond cookies which the attendant said were very good. I agreed! Reminder me of pecan cookies. I also got a sweet and crunchy pastry. I thought they would be like buñuelos but they were very sweet. To much syrup in my opinion. Very friendly guy taking orders. He speaks several languages, even Spanish. They only accept cash and Venmo.

Bakery in SF Chinatown, but you don't go in - you order from outside and they bring your order out to you. Basically a grab and go. I know of this place because the cow ears snack and the egg tarts. This time I got the egg tarts finally, and they were delish. Made for a good snack while walking around Chinatown. The egg tart was a good size and tasted fresh. Crust was flaky and the inside was smooth and rich. Try one if you're in the area.

Dahn taht - $3.00 but so good!

Only tried the dat taht (egg custard tart), but it reminded me of Chinatown in L.A., back in the day. Buttery, flaky crust and rich custard inside. It's $3 a tart, which is definitely more than when I was a kid, but I get it - prices are higher everywhere. Still delish. Almost got the sesame ball with red bean paste (big!) but we were going to eat lunch, so we didn't. Little mom and pop shop with authentic old school feel. The elderly lady reminded me of an auntie. Lol. Whenever I'm in SF, I'll come by.

So sad to post this but Eastern Bakery has gone downhill and keeps on rolling. The only thing that they still have going for them is their coffee crunch cake BUT unfortunately, terrible customer service won't bring me back. Ordered two 8" inch round coffee crunch cakes (a WHOPPING $45 a pop - cash only) and although the taste of the cake is still spot on, they are NOT consistent with the way their cakes look or the attention they give to their cakes. and Ali's ordered one Chinese rice krispy (which generally is shaped in a square but this time it looked like a bunch of leftover pieces that were rolled together in a mashed up ball) and three pieces of their sweetened rice cake (which definitely was not fresh and was hard, when generally its very soft and springy). Called the day after to ask if their Chinese rice krispy was still made in a square and they confirmed it was. When I told them that I picked up two cakes and the other four pieces the day before, and how disappointed I was in the pastries because of the lack of freshness and how terrible they looked, the rude lady who speaks both English and Chinese perfectly, hung up on me! Customer service is definitely not at its finest. No apologies or acknowledgement whatsoever. Last time I'll be a customer and think twice before you become one.

Another amazing place in Sf in Chinatown the eastern bakery dies it great! Their red bean and custard buns were fantastic so flavorful and good and the owner was very friendly and welcoming. Price is ridiculous three or four dollars for each bun with all that flavor Omg. Can't wait to visit again!

    Sesame balls
    James R.

Recently read an opinion article on the sesame balls here so I thought I'd give them a try. The author was right. These are one of the best I've had in SF. When nice and hot, they were perfectly chewy and just melts in your mouth. The red bean was also not too over powering like others. At $3 per balls, cash or zelle only with one man manning the shop.

Eastern Bakery is one of those great San Francisco finds. Tucked away in Chinatown, it's easy to walk right past the modest storefront in the middle of all the hustle and bustle. But don't let the unassuming exterior fool you--it's a real hidden gem. There's no indoor seating here; all orders are placed at a small stand by the door. The windows are plastered with handwritten paper signs that serve as the menu. At first glance, it feels a bit overwhelming, but once you dive in, you'll realize it's part of the charm. The real stars are the mooncakes and the coffee crunch cake. I first heard about the cake on Reddit and was curious to try it as an alternative to my usual go-to at Yasukoi Sweet Shop in Japantown. I don't believe this cake is even on the menu plastered on the windows, so you'll have to ask for it blindly. Eastern Bakery's version is sweeter, with little pieces that are slightly burnt. That contrast--the rich sweetness of the cake against the bitter crunch--is surprisingly addictive. Personally, it was just a touch too sweet for me, but still worth the experience.

The filling was me. Not much barbecue seasoning or sauce to it and it's too ground.

So, maybe today was a slow or bad day, but the barbecue pork was extremely disappointing. I came here because I saw a video on Instagram. And we wouldn't come back. The barbecue pork bun was not tasty. It was very big, but that doesn't make it good. The price also seemed high. Definitely not worth waiting in the line.

    Sweet noodle puff
    Katie K.

They only take cash or zelle here :') I was introduced to a new Chinese snack today! It was fried noodles stuck together (rice crispie-style) with some sort of syrup? It was honestly very much up my alley of sweets I like but my only complaint was that the noodles were too oily like they weren't properly drained after frying.

The Eastern Bakery was one of the stops on our walking food tour. It's a very busy spot and quite small. Their moon cakes are delicious, fresh, and homemade. The stressful experience of ordering and paying disappeared once I took the first bite. If you can be patient, you should stop by this bakery.

Has anyone ordered Mooncakes from them and had them shipped out of state? How was the experience?

Yes from California to Nevada plus I ordered wife cakes as well. They shipped well and were good as expected from Eastern. I shipped to my Mother in Law so if there was a problem I would've heard about it FOR SURE😉

I came by on a Friday around 11 am and it was so hard to find parking. The line was only formed because the bakery is relatively small and doesn't have a lot of wiggle room so they only let in one party at a time. There aren't any sit-down tables or chairs so this is a grab and enjoy somewhere else. Pastry: Kouign-amann (8.4/10): Oh this was yummy. I love a good kouign amann and Arsicault satisfied my sweet tooth. It was a little too sweet but had a good outer layer crunch and fluffy interior. Chocolate Almond Croissant (7.8/10): This one was amazing! I will say that this one is definitely on the sweeter side but it was still delicious. It's a pretty big croissant with a good crunch but not a lot of flaking :( I did really enjoy the almond paste that was smothered on the inside. My boyfriend really enjoyed this croissant and wouldn't stop talking about it for a few hours.

The namesake Pistachio Cardamom croissant was excellent for a filled croissant. It had excellent layers and the cream was just enough to add a lusciousness to each bite that wasn't too heavy. The madame lorraine was my other favorite. It was meaty and rich with the soft baked runny yolk and the light touch of rosemary was just enough to accentuate the bite. The not as good...a standard butter croissant. Maybe we got a dud but there was a serious lack of layers in ours and it wasn't as crisp or as buttery as I like. The elote corn croquiche filling was also quite salty which was a shame because the pastry layer was pretty good. I still have two more pastries to try but given the weight and the mixed bag, I definitely expected a lot more from Butter & Crumble. Pro tip: get a butter croissant at Arsicault, walk to B Patisserie and get a kouign amann. You'll have both before the line moves here.

Since it had been decades since my last visit to Japantown, she took my daughter and me there for a weekday adventure during our summer break. I was surprised that many items were already sold out, especially since it was only ten in the morning! Next time, we'll definitely need to arrive even earlier. We decided to get several treats to try, though I can't remember all their names. The only ones I recall are the pastries that had "salt" in their titles, which I really enjoyed. I was initially skeptical about ordering the Honeycomb Toffee Latte, fearing it would be too sweet and thick. I heard kind of a grunt, kind of like, you know how Asian people will grunt sometimes instead of speaking (my Japanese grandmother and mother do this, so I picked up on it...)... so when I heard the grunt, I said, "Oh, are you ready to take our order?" And she looked at us and nodded as if we were an inconvenience to her. Aaaahhhh yes.... this is the "Gen Z stare". No common decency of doing business with humans, just her staring at a screen and expecting us to telepathically know she was ready to take our order. Thankfully I have Asian heritage, because my friend would have probably died waiting there for the gal to say something or make eye contact. So we order 5 pastries, a bag of vanilla butter mochi, and 2 drinks which came out to nearly $60, which is fine... but then upon payment to ask for a 20% tip? Um... excuse me? Grunts and stares does not a good tip make, my dears. We left $4 to cover the 2 drinks being made and for the "service". If she had offered us common decency, we would have tipped more. I'm not asking for a fake smile - just to be acknowledged as a customer who is patronizing a business. My friend got the honeycomb toffee latte. While other people got sizeable chunks of honeycomb atop their drink, he got literal dust. He asked if that was the honeycomb, and they confirmed. Wow - they really did hate us! Is it because we only tipped $4? We may never know. The einspander coffee was good. The pastries were overall, good but more like "okay". The hojicha puff filling was runny and literally dumped out of the hole it was piped in to. We sat at a table outside of the shop, so it's not like we traveled with the pastry and it got hot or something. The orange chocolate bun was very good. I am not familiar with Korean, so please forgive me... but the croissant square with mochi and kinako could have been good, but the kinako cemented to the roof of my mouth when I would take a bite. Then when I folded it so the cementing wouldn't happen, the flavor was just lost. I thought the chewy mochi with the crunchy pastry would be great, but it wasn't. I absolutely adore kinako, but it just didn't work. I'll stick to regular omochi with kinako. We got the two Korean beef pastries - the croissant version and the bun version. The bun was great even though the filling was skimpy. The croissant pastry was okay, but the bun was better. Would I come back? Probably not, to be honest.

There is both indoors and outdoors seating with plenty of lighting and space to for customers staying around to enjoy the scenery. Wait time: There was a little line but it moved quickly and service was quick while standing in line. Two registers and lines to check out from as well. Service: Quick and friendly staff when going through check out queue. Food: The spinach and feta croissant was extremely well made with a slight hint of lemon to boost the flavor of the feta inside the croissant. I personally would have preferred a little more color on the croissant and crispier exterior but overall very tasty. Mexican Chocolate muffin was a nice size for the price of the muffin. However, I felt that the level of spice from the cayenne was a little overpowering and drowned out some of the chocolate notes. Overall, A very delicious bakery with good pastries and a lot of options to choose from. Staff extremely friendly and service quick. An easy to get to and plentiful option bakery for everyone.
