Khachapuri with ham was pretty good, albeit a little burnt. Our coffees were fine. The person helping us was a little off-putting; I asked if they offered any syrups with their lattes and she responded with a very passive aggressive "we certainly do not!". I thought it was a very standard question lol. Anyway, went with the mocha and my friend got a cafe au lait--both were alright. I saw after ordering that they do have self-serve bottles of sweeteners at the pick-up area: honey and brown sugar syrup. Would've gotten a standard latte and added my own sweetener if I knew. Vibes are nice. I like that they offer a bunch of outdoor seating, as well as some indoor.

After walking up the stairs to the top of the Cleveland Cascade, my guide to old Oakland, turns us down the hill on Merritt Ave. At the bottom of the hill I see the convivence store he points out. That used to be a 7-Eleven 50 years ago. Wow, this is all way before I was born! Then we turn left up Brooklyn Ave, I see this big ass hill, I hope we don't have to walk up that! No, he says as we turn left on Wesley Ave. There's a row of store fronts and he says, this is where I picked up my papers for the paper route. It's the location of the Haddon Hill Cafe now! All the other paper boys assembled the papers with what they called "inserts" he tells me inside this store front. Wanna get a snack and coffee? Sure, so we go in and get a seat. He goes up and gets two coffees, he knows mine is just black. On a plate he has a croissant that looks tasty. This turns out to be quite an informative walk in the Lake Merritt area and weird thinking I'm sitting in a cafe right where my friend used to assemble papers over 50 years ago! Historic cafe location and I didn't even know it! Seems like a nice neighborhood place to hang out.

Ham and cheese croissant was pretty good if I avoided the parts that were a little over toasted (that's a me thing). But the latte. I cannot get over the latte. I knew something was up when I picked up the cup. It was light. I got back to the house. And how is it that my cup is almost less than half full? You want me to pay $7 for this? Wild.

I got an espresso and an oat milk cortado. Both were just ok. The espresso had a slightly burnt flavor that also came through in the macchiato. That said, I also had a Khachapuri for the first time and it was excellent. I got the veggie one with mushrooms. Highly recommend.

Amazing little bakery in the neighborhood next to Lake Merritt! Walkable too so you can grab coffee/pastries and walk by the Lake. The menu itself is pretty standard, simple coffee shop fare. I like that they also have a pretty hefty tea menu; I tried a lychee tea which had a nice, subtle but clear lychee flavor to it. Pastry-wise, this is one of those places where pretty much every single pastry looks delicious! I opted to get the caramelized onion and mushroom croissant, a unique item that I've never seen elsewhere. This may have been one of the best filled croissants I've ever had--the croissant itself was buttery and flaky, and the inside was super umami from the mushroom blend. There was plenty of cheese inside and it didn't overwhelm the mushrooms and the caramelized onion was the perfect flavor to wrap it all together. Lastly, service was super friendly and some smooth classical music was blasting from the inside of the bakery--what a vibe! Great bakery to start your morning at.

I decided to try Haddon Hill Cafe with my sister as a little catch up date and because it was local! Haddon Hill Cafe is a little hidden. I'm not sure I saw an actual signage for it, but there's not much around that block except for the cafe, so you won't miss it! I came on a Friday morning, and it was easy to find parking around the block. Currently, there's only a couple of outdoor seats available, but it seems like generally people take their items to-go, or just sit down for a short while. They do not offer indoor seating yet. They display their pastries right by the window, so if you're in-line, you can think about what to get. When it's your turn, you order right at their door counter, and they'll let you know when your order is ready! My sister ordered a Latte with oat milk and Khachapuri. I ordered their Apricot Scone with a Cafe Au Lait with almond milk, as it seems to be a popular item on Yelp! I'm a total noob when it comes to coffee, but I normally get a latte or cold brew, so the Cafe Au Lait was not my norm! I had to ask the employee what the difference between a Cafe Au Lait and Latte was, and he was kind enough to explain to me. Totally butchered pronouncing Khachapuri too, but he gently corrected me, haha. Nice employees! It took a couple minutes for a table to open up, and thankfully we were the only ones waiting around, so we got first dibs on it! Thankfully it wasn't too cold to sit outside today either. Our order was ready relatively quick. We were pretty excited to give the Khachapuri a try because the only other time we had this was in Seattle and the one we had there had set the bar really high. I think the Khachapuri here could be a little softer on the crust and the egg was a tad overcooked for our liking, but other than that, it was satisfying. My sister had most of it since I tend to avoid dairy. As for my scone, I thought that was pretty good. Mildly sweet, had some apricot pieces here and there, and I liked that this scone wasn't too dry, and not too crumbly either. It was well made! As for the Cafe Au Lait, I figured it just didn't really fit my personal taste, but it's probably good for people who do like Cafe Au Lait! I was just feeling a wee adventurous today and gave it a try. Would I come back? For sure if I'm around the area. I feel like their pastries are pretty worth it! I'd like to give their morning bun a try next time. Thank you for the warm service!

I like this coffee shop because it's right next to the laundromat I go to, but it is a walk up coffee shop with outdoor seating set up outside. While I'm working on my computer and waiting for my laundry to be finished, I can count on this place to be open after 8am. There usually isn't a line right when it opens, but this is a neighborhood coffee shop so an influx of locals at different times of the day isn't unexpected. The service was friendly and their alternatives for dairy milk are oat milk and almond milk. I ordered the dirty chai (chai with a shot of espresso) and subbed milk for oat milk. The total came to $7 for a medium cup. It's kind of pricey in my opinion, but long gone the days of getting chai and coffee for under $5.

Kat here with another review for y'all! ********* First time checking out this quaint little bakery found it through Yelp. We arrived around 11:30am looking for their Kachapuri but they ran out. Manager said to arrive a little before 10:30 to grab a Kachapuri breakfast. Out of what was left, we tried out the Cheddar and Chive Croissant and the Almond Croissant based on the Yelp reviews that were listed. Both were amazing ! We will definitely be back again to get my hands on their Kachapuri

Cute place to stop at if you're in a walk in the neighborhood. Good coffee and yummy pastries! I got the almond chocolate croissant! My iced drink did come in a hot Togo cup so that was odd but not a big deal if you don't take forever to drink your cup. If it sits around then the cup getting soft.

Small neighborhood coffee shop, we stopped by on the way to Lake Merritt and luckily the high reviews are totally justified. When doing a drive-by its very easy to find because of the bright red door. They are part of a group of coffee shops that house-roasts their own beans in small batches, I find that almost every coffee place I've been to that make their own beans also serve high quality coffee. Cappuccino, I knew it would be good before taking a sip and it was perfect, my wife and I both got one and it was totally gone by the time we reached Lake Merritt. Ham and Cheese and Morning Bun. High quality pastries with baked in buttery goodness. Crispy outside and layers of soft fluffy dough inside. Cheese and ham were of the fancy variety and morning bun had a desirable light citrus zest.

This is a walkup-style coffee shop that's perfect to get your morning cup of joe on your morning walk! Also not far from the lake so if you're doing the circuit it's worth a detour. The service here was fast, their prices are reasonable, and I had no complaints about the order process. It sort of creates a little spot to meet your neighbors because everyone is gathered on the sidewalk waiting for their coffee. Love this place! Go here for a quick coffee stop.

Came here with my husband for coffee and snacks. Everything we had tasted delicious and the service was awesome. I love that the baked goods were from local bakeries. We loved the atmosphere, the other patrons and the workers were super friendly. Liked the art on the walls, the place was really clean and free wi-fi was a plus. Highly recommended! read more

Really, really quiet and chill, kind of eerily quiet. Great space to meet someone for coffee, but not so great as a laptop land for working. It feels as if you're walking into someones kitchen as opposed to a cafe and the customer service is kind of commensurate with that feeling. They don't have many choices for milk (no nonfat) and the pastries while tasty are just Starter bakery, which is in a lot of cafes. The homemade empanadas are a pretty awesome touch though. read more

It is a little town coffee shop. They have seats and tables. You don't wait for your order. They are pretty fast. It is very close to the lake. I really like the store itself. It has some kind of classical feeling. I would definitively recommend it to you. Nice location. read more

I heart Haddon Hill Cafe. Like other reviewers mention, this place is an ideal neighborhood cafe. Tucked a little off the beaten path with more outdoor seating than indoor, I can always depend on a "regular" to pet my pooch while I'm inside ordering. Danny and Isaac are super friendly. I'm grateful they are open every day, yet my complaint is they don't open early enough for me to grab a before work almond milk mocha and they are closed by the time I get home. With their current hours, they will forever be my weekends only spot! Love their espresso drinks and scones! read more

So glad that these guys took over my local coffee shop which, once, could be described as "terrible." In the last few years, the new owners (so local, I believe, they live two doors down) offer top notch coffee in a lovely setting. Today, some dude was playing mournful tunes on a piano--how lovely! Such a cute and cozy spot. I've wandered in here a few times, and they have free WiFi so you can work, yummy coffee and the best - mushroom pepperjack empanadas! High quality coffee, tea, and bites offered without the snobby attitude. The environment is warm and inviting, like the "Cheers" equivalent to a cafe. My fiance and I love coming here on the weekends to grab an empanada or a gluten-free pastry and often run into some neighbors while we're there. Haddon Hill is a great asset to our neighborhood since it creates space for building community and friendships. I looove that! read more

Very cute spot. Easy, friendly, convenient neighborhood cafe. There are good varieties of both sweet and savory pastries. If you love empanadas, they offer a few versions for both meat lovers and vegetarians. On a hot summer day, I recommend trying their homemade herbal/floral tea served on ice. read more

The place is charming and cozy with local art, a few plants, books, and a piano. There's a nice mix of seating options: indoor/outdoor tables, a 4 seater community table, and a bar bench. Isaac makes you feel welcome- and he makes a great latte! They also have Javi's empanadas, quiche lorraine, and daily pastries, all delicious. And there are plenty of ceramic mugs, so I don't have to feel guilty about drinking my coffee in a paper cup when it's a "for here" order. Tues-Sun 8-3 Closed Monday. read more

Hands down, my favorite coffee shop east of the lake. I've been coming here since I moved to the neighborhood and it just keeps getting better. Great coffee (Four Barrel), yummy pastries, comfortable and down to earth vibe, friendly staff and outside seating? It feels like the neighborhood shop. I'm sold. Plus they have DELICIOUS empanadas! I love smaller coffeeshops, which sometimes can be a problem when it comes to seating. Even though folks are sometimes camped out with laptops, it doesn't have that stale feeling that most places with free wifi have. Stop in for a cup, you won't regret it! read more

Exactly what this neighborhood needs. Such a great, warm and friendly little place. Although I didn't try them, the pastries all looked great. They even have really nice plaeo and gluten-free muffins, cookies, etc.. My latte was good and the only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because they use a lighter roast and I'm a fan of the big, heavy dark roasts. Still, it's a really nice little place and a great addition to the neighborhood. read more

Please don't come here. The coffee is so good, I want it all for myself. Even though they don't roast themselves, which I can fully understand, the coffee is outstanding. The doppio are a good amount which makes the price about right. All in all, fantastic, but if you don't come, I'll have more for me. read more

Dug it. The location was cool as it was sort of out of the way. The iced coffee tasted great. They get 5 stars because they were friendly, had great music (RJD2 Pandora station), and most amazingly: they had almond milk instead of soy! read more

Love this place. I always come in for a latte when I'm waiting for my laundry next door. The menu is minimal but has all your coffee basics, and they sell a few delicious-looking pastries as well. They stock a bunch of fancy magazines for people to borrow while sipping on their coffee, and I love the neighborhood vibe - the owners seem to know everyone who comes in (not just their names, but their jobs and vacation plans too!). I just get a very warm sense of the folks here caring about the community, and I hope they are successful! One downside - their hours are a bit limited. I wish I could do work there in the evenings. read more

This is the perfect neighborhood spot, and is great for a quick cup to go, but also friendly and cozy enough to sit and nurse an expertly crafted drink. The pastry selection is great, a good mix of items, including gluten free muffins! The coffee - well that's what we're all here for, isn't it!? They pull a mean espresso, and have really nice, well balanced cold brew. Prices are comparable to any other shop serving top notch caffeine. And the staff- I'm one of those people who really struggles with simple tasks and interactions before my first cup of coffee, and the team here takes my chaos in stride, always with a smile. Can't overstate how awesome that is. read more

In total, we paid $7.50, which was not bad at all! The space is spacious inside with an ample parking lot, but I would say this is more of a grab-and-go place; there is some outdoor seating. We got a pizza with tomato, olive oil, feta, and olives. The service was quick, straightforward, and we were able to get our slices within 5 minutes and it came out hot which was great! The pizza itself is on the thinner side and has a good ratio of dough to cheese. The crust/base was chewy and light and did in fact, taste healthy (in a good way)! Do I think this place is somewhere you must go to try out? Honestly, no, it is a good value pizza that tastes delicious, but I would say to only stop in if you are around the area.

He was very forthright in stating that due to Covid he was baking from home but that all Covid protocols were in place. He walked me thru the types of cakes he could get by my deadline and I chose the Herman Chocolate Cake. I checked in with him the day before delivery and recd a text when the cake was delivered. The process was easy and flawless because I used CashApp. Now my dad is very particular about things re sweets due to diabetes but he told me that he hasn't ever tasted a sugar free cake so darn good. His cake was delivered on Saturday and since then he has talked about the cake. Even his wife was pretty impressed. Though I didn't taste the cake, I know it was delicious because my dad doesn't play when it comes to food. He said it was fresh and super delicious. And he couldn't believe it was super free as he continued to enjoy it!! Thank you for brightening up my dads birthday as none of us siblings are in the area and I know this made his year!! Thank you Johnathan and Granddaughter you guys are awesome!

I don't know exactly what pistachio mousse tastes like but I wouldn't have guessed it was that if I hadn't read the description. I also couldn't taste the Frangelico that was supposed to be there. The cake looked pretty and tasted good but the birthday boy thought it was a little dry. The service at the counter was friendly and helpful. I ordered a mini kalamata olive loaf, which was the perfect size for snacking. Service was quick and efficient, and I took my bread to-go to enjoy at home. I appreciated how the loaf is baked with more olives per square inch than any olive bread I have ever tasted. The sourdough had a good chew without being too tough and was soft and fluffy on the inside. The tangy sourdough and briny olives needed little else but were enhanced with a pat of French butter. On my next visit, I'd like to try La Farine's other sourdough loaves and baguettes.

As a result, it took a while for them to be able to stop by our table and provide water, take our order, etc. There was quite a long wait between sitting down to ordering to actually receiving our food. By the time we had actually received our food, almost an hour had passed. While we were waiting, a few other servers eventually joined, but service was still pretty bare for us and we never received refills on water or plates to eat off of when we received our food. I understand that staffing and a backup in the kitchen are out of the staff's control, but it would've definitely helped for us to know in advance how long to expect to wait to align our expectations and arrange our plans for the day. Would advise giving customers a quick heads up/warning because that on its own would've made a big difference. As for the actual food, we ordered the mac trio with elote mac, chicken pot pie mac, and kogi short rib mac (for an extra fee). The elote mac was the best and most flavorful, the short rib mac was okay but not amazing or worth the extra money, and the chicken pot pie mac was very bland/flavorless and didn't have much chicken in it. The food didn't feel like it warranted the wait time and because of that I would not return.

I ordered a small blueberry iced matcha, and it was really good. The matcha itself had a rich flavor, and the blueberry came through nicely without making the drink overly sweet. It was a really refreshing combination. Even while I was there, there seemed to be a steady stream of people coming in and out, which is always a good sign. I wish I had picked up one of the pastries to try, but I'll definitely have to save that for my next visit.

The gist: A unique coffee shop in fun location with a few menu options that it does very well. Came here today with a buddy. Beautiful day to just sit outside on the street in the shade. I was so glad to see the menu had only a few options. One option that wasn't on there was the iced coffee which my friend ordered. I probably would've ordered that if it had been on the menu - hot day. That's why I only give it 4 stars. With so few menu options, there should be something on the menu mentioning that coffee could come iced. That said, this place is great. I loved sitting out on the street - felt like I was in some fun European side street spot! They had empanadas for sale, which was great to have a heartier food option, as well as pastries. I'd definitely recommend coming here, and by bike if you can - lots of bike parking. I'd also recommend hitting it up around 2, to get that sunlight. read more

My wife and I ate there three out of the four days we were in Oakland, We each had something different and delicious each day. You no sooner place your order, take a sip of coffee, and "BAM" your order was sitting right in front of you. Service was very attentive, lots of smiley faces and always packed. What a little hidden gem! I'll definitely be back. I ordered the Khachapuri and an Oat milk latte. The Khachapuri was absolutely AMAZING!!! It's huge and thought no way I could eat this whole thing. Well I found my second stomach and ate the whole entire thing. Do I regret it? Absolutely not! Every bite was so good. Onto the oat milk latte. It's clear that this space is very special to the owner, Isaac, who is very friendly and will welcome you back. What a gem of a coffee shop, right by Lake Merritt! I am trying a new diet but I caved when I saw the pastries, they looked very tasty and the display case was inviting. I ordered up a pastry and a Tea (sorry not a coffee review) I sat outside and enjoyed the view, the pastry was warm and flaky, very soft as well. Big fan of the house-made coffee and pastries. Extra point for them reheating the pastries before serving. Croissants were impressive to the point I thought they were from Tartine. Newly reintroduced Kougin Amann is more dense than B Patisserie, but still good. Possibly consider putting a simple sugar syrup in the middle so it oozes out when you break it apart - one of the hallmarks of B Patisserie that many have looked out for and grown to love read more
