Been eating here since my childhood! My family and I love coming here for brunch during the weekends. The servers are quick and friendly and the food is great! I would suggest coming early at 10:30am before the crowd comes in, especially during the weekends. But other than that, not too long of a wait. Clement street used to be filled with restaurants but with rent being high, not a lot of restaurants last long here. But Hamburger Haven is the place to go if you want breakfast or lunch foods. I just ate here for the first time since its post-covid reopening. My hamburger was sizable, done to perfection and accompanied by crisp lettuce and a thick slice of Bermuda onion. The fries were good as well. The only drawback to the meal was the can of Coke instead of a fountain serve, but that's not enough to knock off a star. Overall, it's still the best burger in the Richmond. Another reviewer laments the loss of its 1940s diner vibe. I have no idea what that person is referring to. I've been coming here since the early 70s and I can assure you that the decor has not substantially changed since that time - wood paneling, micro red and orange wall tiles, counter stools as well as booths along the window, and even the clunky mechanical cash register near the door. It's damn near a time capsule of that period. I'd also take issue with Yelp's description of the place. This is not a "retro 70s" diner. Today is my first time trying this item. I looked at the menu and thought milkshakes and sodas? I have had that many times before. Hooray for Hamburger Haven! After a few years on hiatus, this classic neighborhood eatery returns. They underwent a facelift during their closure, but kept the vintage 1969ish interior vibes largely intact (we do miss the old Robin Williams photo in the window though ). The food is just what one would hope for and expect. Very well made old school diner food, but perhaps just a touch better than Walmart one would remember. The biscuits were more delicate, the bacon thicker, the eggs fresher, the sausage juicier, etc. the burgers were very good and happily devoured by our sons. The fries were hot and fresh. I have been coming to Hamburger Haven for more than 10 years. But we recently went through a 7 week kitchen remodel which made me appreciate the Haven even more. I was terrified during the pandemic that it would shut down. And when it reopened I was pleased to see most of the old crew still working. I have never ordered anything but breakfast here so despite the name I have never had a hamburger. BUT I have tried almost everything on the breakfast menu and I have yet to be disappointed. They know when I sit down that I want an iced tea instead of coffee and my other regular requests: crispy hash browns and dry toast. I'm sure I've passed by Hamburger Haven over the years without ever taking notice. I was probably on my way to a far trendier eatery ready to dine with hipsters half my age and twice as obnoxious. However, a moment of sheer spontaneity brought Jamie W. and me here as we impulsively boarded the 2-Clement on Market Street and took it to the end of the line around 12th Avenue. Strolling on Clement, we noticed how quiet the place was, and that appealed to us at that very moment. Once you enter, you feel like you're in an Edward Hopper painting with lonely-looking souls eating by themselves. We parked ourselves in a two-seat booth along the wall and perused a menu that offered no less than 24 different hamburgers. Jamie went for his old stand-by, the $8.95 Patty Melt, which was exactly what it was supposed to be, a burger with grilled onions and melted jack cheese squeezed between two slices of toasted rye (see photo). Me, I felt an obligation to try the $9.50 Haven Burger, presumably the house special with avocado, sautéed mushrooms, grilled onions and melted jack cheese atop a medium-rare burger (see photo). It wasn't amazing, but it was good, solid comfort food. Plenty of fries came with both of our burgers, and they were moist on the inside with a nice crunch on the outside. But even before my burger and fries, I had a $1.95 cup of their Chicken Rice Soup (see photo). Piping hot but comforting on a cold night. No complaints about the food whatsoever. It was exactly what Jamie and I wanted that evening. All the time we were there, there was barely a change in the clientele. Two solitary diners left, two more came in, usually being very chatty with the cook who looks like he's been manning the grill for quite sometime. Service was very low-key but attentive. Some of the daily specials they had listed sounded tempting like their Pork Roast on Tuesdays and their Shredded BBQ Pork Sandwich on Wednesdays, which I assume they make from the leftover pork from Tuesday. Yep, it's a no-frills, comfort-food diner alright. I liked my burger so much last week that I wanted to try their Breakfast. This morning, I had their Irish Breakfast, which consists of 2 eggs, 2 slices of Irish Bacon, 2 Irish sausages, hash browns, and toast. I've never been to Ireland, but the Irish bacon is similar (or identical) to the bacon I've had in the UK, so it's a lot more meatier and tastes like ham. The Irish sausage seemed similar to a British Banger - it seemed have some breadcrumbs mixed in with the pork. We finally decided to stop for their $5 breakfast special today- 2 eggs, 2 sausages (or bacon), 2 pancakes (or french toast). The food arrived quickly which is VERY important in my book, for weekday breakfast. The service was friendly and coffee was refilled QUICKLY. The place is also quite clean. Overall, food was average...but eggs are eggs, right? I would recommend this place over Mel's Diner for weekdays! Back in the day Robin Williams would grab a burger here. Incognito and with that silly grin on his face... I like Hamburger Haven because it's like walking into a burger joint decades ago, d'oh since 1968, and no it's not a chain but has survived the fast-food boom, & lately the fancy burger spots *pinky up!* It's just steady, Freddy! Located on Clement St. & 9th Ave. in the inner richmond district it is convenient for all. As you enter you'll notice the rustic decor mixed-in with a greasy spoon aura. The over-stuffed forest green stools fixed at the bar & the forest green booths whispers the 1970's. Framed photos of the owners, local celebrities, and some iconic faces of yesteryear scatter the walls as well. It's not fine dining by any means, but it's comfortable. Almost like at Grannies! I usually sit at the booth even if riding solo, unless it's a weekend then I'll slide over to the bar. I'm by no means a regular, however have been here several times and have my go-to's on the menu. I used to love the French Dip w/ Au Jus Special (not sure if it's still offered tho), the breakfast deals are good too (several to choose from, but the weekday special is the best), and of course it would be sacrilege to not have a fav burger here, so mine was the Haven Burger (1/3 burger, sautéed mushrooms, avo, grilled onions, jack cheese) or the Mushroom Swiss Cheeseburger. All comes with fries & potato salad or coleslaw. And vegheads don't fret... there are 3-types of vege burgers! So, although it's an old burger joint, the menu is more like a roadside diner... lot's to choose! Hamburger Haven is by no means my favorite burger joint, but it's comfort to me. Whoa! I randomly looked up this burger spot because my auntie used to take me here as a kiddo and low and behold this place still exists after so many years! So, this review is based on burger nostalgia. Looking at the yelp photos, I can tell they still do burgers just as they did back in the day. There are the perfectly toas ted buns and nicely charred burgers. I remember the burgers to be so delicious and juicy. The dining area from current photos look clean and not much has changed in a few decades. For those that live in the Richmond District of San Francisco, you are fortunate to a have a classic burger spot at Hamburger Haven!
