This was one of the best experiences that I've had this year. My first night in Minneapolis and I was looking for a downtown restaurant near my hotel where I could get a drink and some food at 8:30 on a Sunday evening and Hell's Kitchen met all the criteria. It's down a flight of stairs in the basement of a highrise and once you get there, you are met with a wide open dining area and bar that is filled with the art of Ralph Steadman. I'm impressed with the vibe and decor as soon as I enter. I sat at the bar and interacted with 3 seperate staff - all were professional and conversationalists and the 2 couples that I sat next to were equally enjoyable. I started with an Elevated Amber from Lift Bridge Brewing Company in Minnesota, a delicious red ale that was recommended by m waitress / bartender. Since I was in Minnesota, I knew that I needed to have some of their state fish, so I ordered a plate of the Walleye Bites. Perfect. I hadn't planned on any dessert, but when I saw the description for the Bleeding Heart Brownie, I couldn't resist. Chocolate Brownie splattered with raspberry soaked caviar and a side cup of their homemade peanut butter. The sweet and salty / chocolate and fruity concoction was exquisite. the peanut Butter was the best I've ever had and I understand why they sell jars to go. The presentation looked like it had been lifted from a Steadman illustration. Strikingly shocking and bold! This will be the first place I return when I visit the Twin cities again. read more

Hell's Kitchen was great - the food was very delicious. The burger was great and the cheese curds were some of the best I've had at a restaurant. The holiday pop up decorations were still up and really added a lot to the experience. I also felt that the employee ownership really contributes to a fun and unique experience. The staff members were all fun and enjoyable. The sole reason for the 4 stars is due to the speed of service. It was definitely understaffed and we had to wait quite a bit to put our order in. This place was great. It had a vast menu full of different food. My friend and I came here for brunch. I got the fish and chips and she got the huevo rancheros. I switched the chips for tater tots. I loved the fish and chips. The salsa on the huevo rancheros was particularly good! Their portions were a bit big for me but it seems like what I got also just had big portions. This place is in a basement and has all kinds of hell decorations, which was really fun. They even sell their signature peanut butter, which I bought for a friend. In terms of service, it was great. We had a reservation and were promptly seated. It does get pretty busy on weekends so recommend a reservation if you're coming then. read more

Tucked into an unassuming building down a flight of stairs, you walk into a bright room (yes it's black and red, but it works). Stopped by for breakfast/brunch and was excited to try the huevos rancheros--especially with the glowing "best dish" claims on the menu and website. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to the hype. The dish came with unseasoned hash browns slopped on top of tortillas, eggs, and sour cream. While the tomato sauce was solid, the overall dish felt uninspired and lacking in flavor. It might appeal to someone who hasn't had authentic huevos rancheros, but it wasn't for me. I added the bison pork sausage, which sounded unique with bison and maple, but ultimately it was just fine--nothing memorable. But then came the peanut butter cup. OMG. Easily the best I've ever had. Made in-house with the perfect peanut butter and a surprise housemade marshmallow center. That little dessert completely saved the visit. The service was fine, but the basement location lacks the light, lively brunch vibe I enjoy. Overall, it's a one-and-done spot for me--not terrible, just not worth the calories or return visit. Had heard about Hell's kitchen many, many times but had never been. Thought it would at least be a fun atmosphere, but that wasn't the case. I have been to Minneapolis twice for work and both times I have come to Hell's Kitchen! I went as a group of 7 - on short notice, we could not get a reservation on Friday/weekend so we went on Thursday night. We were seated by a stage (no performances that night) so I can see that it would get a lot more lively during the weekends! The menu is extensive and has something for everyone. We were recommended Lucifer's lemonade for drinks and that was a big hit in our group (both flavors)! We also really enjoyed the cheese curds - we even ordered a second one, and one person ordered one to go! I had to get the Juicy Lucifer because I'd never had a gooey cheesy center in the burger before: and it did not disappoint! I love this place. I came here a year ago for a trip in Minneapolis and fall in love with the pear sandwich!! I came back this week and I still think it's the best sandwich I have ever tried. The French fries are delicious... the ribs are not so good. For the dessert we ordered a brownie with a cup of ice cream, a little pricey for the size of it. This was just a delightful stop for our [large] group to have a dinner. Hell's KItchen is a short walk from the [Marquette] hotel, where we were staying. This is a large restaurant and we all went downstair where we had plenty of seating along with our own stage. We definitely took advantage of the stage. It was nice to have our own bar along with a couple of people behind the counter to help us. We were having a buffet and there were still plenty of staff walking around making sure we were all ok. We made our way to the food after a few words from our host committee. It was a lot of people all getting up at the same time but they moved the line well and refilled the food so it was always hot and fresh. It was an impressive choice... Ribs, Chicken Francaise, pasta, salad and vegetables. It was a very complete selection of some very good food. I was impressed how both the ribs and chicken were perfectly sized for a good portion. They've done this before! Everything was hot-tasty and fresh. Items were well sauced and noting was overdone. This looks like a place where I would be comfortable sitting down having a dinner. The Ambiance I definitely would like to go back when there is live music. But this edgy spot located dowtown would be perfect for date night, time with friends and even a quick lunmch with co workers. The restaurant itself is decored heavily, and as a art lover I was in heaven for sure. The Food & Drinks I must admit I started off with a drink that wasn't tickling my fancy. Luckily with the help of my waiter I was able to finally settle on something I like [The Daquiri]. Then I went in for the appetizer [Artichoke Dip]. It was different than what I was use too. It is more creamier than cheese. However, it wasn't bad. I settled on the cowboy burger I believe it was called with the waiter recommendation. If you are a cheese lover then I believe you would enjoy it. Home made patties wrapped in a house burned bun was okay to my taste buds. My overall experience would definitely be a 7 out of 10. Very large space after going down some stairs. Was able to be seated immediately and the waitress was very attentive. Was given a few recommendations and was able to try a few of the popular items. The cinnamon roll was delicious as it wasn't lathered with a vast amount of icing as other places would which allowed the cinnamon and the roll itself to shine. We booked a large group reservation ahead of time and the host desk was ready to seat us right away upon our arrival. We had one primary waiter and he was able to stay on top of our requests for beverage refills and our appetizer and entree orders. I was underwhelmed with my first tree, the Ham and Pear Crisp. I tried it based on the "50 Best Sandwiches in America" reference, but wouldn't order again since it was rather bland. Mostly everyone in our group did enjoy their meals and the portions were satisfactory. If you're staying in downtown Minneapolis, this is a good option to try. Had the Bison Birria Tacos. The red salsa was spicy, the queso included was yummy, but I was not personally a fan of the birria consome. The taco itself was actually tasty, but the consome tasted more like a traditional american chili than it did a more traditional birria stew. Also had cheese curds as an appetizer with the sweet and spicy sauce being rather perfect for the curds. Other than food, service was good and attentive and the atmosphere and theme was great and welcoming. We used to make the drive here for a meal every few months but haven't been back in over a year. This trip didn't measure up to the quality we remembered. We had 6 people on this trip. Bloody Mary and Mimosa Bar - our first time trying this. It might be worth it for a Bloody Mary, but only if you pile on a lot of toppings. The Mimosa Bar wasn't worth it - just a few fruits and gummy candy. It was at the end of the bar hours. Caramel-Pecan Roll (A warm, 1/2 pound, caramel roll topped with roasted, salted pecans and a rich, housemade caramel sauce.) - Probably the best item on the menu, very good. Classic Benedict (Sweet cream hollandaise, two slabs of slow-roasted pit ham, and two poached eggs on an English muffin. Includes a side of hashbrowns.) - 3 people had this and complained about the eggs. They are not runny at all, more like a firmer soft poach with no ooze. They all thought they were overcooked. S'mores Waffle (Hot Damn Cocoa mix, chocolate chips, graham cracker crumble and toasted housemade MN Marshmallow) - we all tried this one and found it very chocolatey and dry. The marshmallow tastes great, but is so firm and sticky that it is difficult to pull apart to eat with the waffle. Maybe should have been accompanied by warm chocolate syrup. The Triple C (A double smashed burger topped with candied bacon, cream cheese blended with caramelized onions, garlic, and herbs.) - I ordered this and hated it. There are 2 very small, extra thin patties that were VERY dry. A small amount of cream cheese was the only moisture. I gave bites of the meat to a few others and they agreed. Kiss My Lips Peanut Butter Mallow Cup (Hell's Kitchen small batch Peanut Butter and Homemade marshmallows encased in 72% Dark Noir chocolate and topped with crushed peanuts and flaky sea salt) - Mixed opinions on this one. It had very good flavor but broke apart as we tried to eat it. The marshmallow just sticks to the fork and you end up just eating a bite of chocolate coating or peanut butter or marshmallow. Food took about 20 minutes as they were busy. Disappointed as I talked everyone into coming. read more

Hell's Kitchen Minneapolis is iconic. And not like in a Gordon Ramsay type of way. This employee-owned gem oozes personality. I adored the hellishly sinister decor and it's rock n roll vibe. (There was a stage-- live music is played Saturday evening from 6pm to 9pm as well as during brunch service every Saturday/ Sunday from 10am to 1pm. Peep their calendar for deets.) We had reservations for dinner on a Sunday evening. We were seated right away and our meals came out within minutes of ordering. The menu is no frills and reasonably priced. I had the chicken sandwich with the soup of the day (corn chowder). The sandwich came out piping hot and well cooked. The soup was the star! Delightful. My kiddo adored a pancake while the other one was underwhelmed by an $8 meal featuring just four mini corn dogs? The tater tots were a bit at our table, as well. Overall-- I'd come back for brunch! There is enough to like about Hell's Kitchen that you should definitely make your way here to try it out. I've come once in a while several times over the years, and I've always had a very good time. The only reason I give it four stars instead of five is that I haven't loved any of the food I've tried enough to merit that. But their menu is extensive and there are a lot of things left to try, and since it's such a fun place to be in general I will definitely get around to trying more of it. This last time I went, it was for a Saturday brunch and there was a cool smooth-jazz band playing live in the background, love that. I ordered their Eggs Benedict with bison meat, and that was unique and pretty good, but it was quite dominated by the bison meat. My friend got the Warm Greens Grain Bowl with chicken, and she was satisfied but not blown away. That's kind of how I've felt about all the food. But there are some popular items that I haven't tried. People love those lemon ricotta hotcakes and I haven't tried them yet, I think I need to do that. And they have that giant bloody mary buffet thing! I don't drink so I don't expect to try that, but it is a very impressive section of the restaurant that is devoted to their Bloody Mary & Mimosa Bar. If that's your scene, this is something to check out for sure. I wanted to buy some of their merchandise, but there was no chance of doing that in the obvious way becuase the front counter was constantly swamped. Two lessons here: 1. get reservations. 2. To buy merch, go up to the street level "short order" section of the restaurant that they moved into recently. It seems you can also sidle up there and get something quick. Maybe not everything from their menu is available, but there looks to be plenty. Plus that is where you can buy merch! I bought some of their peanut butter and have been enjoying it on some chocolate ice cream ever since this visit, so my life is pretty good, you definitely don't have to worry about me. What a huge restaurant! It's been probably 8 years since my last venture to this cool restaurant. They get bonus points for having great gfree options. Our family went here for Easter brunch. Definitely did not disappoint. I opted for the traditional eggs Benedict...with gfree toast...which was delish and hard to even tell the difference along with a huge helping of hash browns. I opted as well for decaf coffee...yum! Everyone else was delighted with their meals including the kiddos who got the Easter waffles with a silhouette of a bunny in whip cream on their waffle. They are moist, melt in your mouth with just the perfect amount of lemon! Try them without the syrup first! And then add as much real maple syrup as you want! -You NEED to try the peanut butter! Just ask for a side of it to try with pretty much anything! It is a crunchier peanut butter, but is unique! Went there twice while in town for a football game. Went for breakfast and was an excellent experience. Our waitress was the best as her suggestions were spot on. What an amazing experience! We hadn't been here in years and were specifically revisiting to try their version of the juicy Lucy called the Juicy Lucifer. This was delicious and cheesy as promised. But we also loved the Mac and cheese balls, fish & chips, and another burger called The Triple C. The waiter was soooo nice. Some appetizers came out a bit late and it was comped which was not expected. It is kid friendly with high chairs, kids meals. There are plenty of seats, it's a big space. So, this restaurant does have a very downtown scene vibe. It's not a neighborhood spot. It's not particularly charming. It's meant for high throughput, above average quality, above average prices-- meals, for people who are downtown and want downtown vibes. Gives vibes of sort of like, somebody went to the Hard Rock Cafe and was like, "hey, what if this place didn't suck quite as much?" But while I agree with some of the more critical reviews, I really couldn't find anything to complain about. My counterpart got the huevos rancheros, which was a sumptuous feast, and I the salmon benedict. The benedict was an inventive take on a classic because the salmon had a distinctly bacon-like character to it (unclear how they did this-- almost like they char-grilled the ends of it after it was cold smoked), and the hollandaise sauce was quite good. Hashbrowns were not necessarily going to win any awards and there was a diner-esque sheen of grease on the plate, which might turn some people off, but that's how you know the hash browns are dank. Service was great. To be clear, there is plenty of great food in Minneapolis St. Paul, so I don't necessarily think that this place is at the top of my list to go back to, but in a pinch, it was quite a delightful experience overall. Atmosphere is also not necessarily going to win any awards-- noisy and a bit too shiny- but it was also good enough, especially for a basement in downtown, and they've done quite well with the space.
