Pink Lady Roll: 10/10 Miso Soup: 10/10 A small sushi place with a handful of tables and bar seating. It's on the nicer side, not overly casual with some pricer sushi. Very authentic and fresh sushi prepared by a trained chef. I sat at the bar and opted for the sashimi dinner which came with the traditional soup and salad. The sashimi was perfectly sliced and the portions were large enough that it was a filling dinner. I had asked for Uni sushi but they did not have this despite being on the menu so I ended up ordering Ikura instead which was also very good. We had dinner here tonight. I made reservations beforehand but I don't think it even mattered. They didn't ask. Parking in ample in the shopping center lot. It'a decently popular. We tried the hot sake. It was refreshing and warming. Our waitress was very attentive and the service was excellent. The wait tone on our food was long at all. I ordered the veggie tempura for my entree. It came with salad and miso soup. The beef was delicious and tender. I love how it comes sliced. I had it well-done. This was a horrible experience simply because of the service. First, as I was ordering the server Kyoko said "that's a lot of food" as if I didn't understand what I was ordering. I ordered two rolls and an entree. The comment was the first of many rude and inappropriate comments. My entree was brought out before the rolls. When I asked for the rolls first she replied, "at Japanese restaurants we bring all the food at one time." I replied that I've frequented many and this was the first time I'd heard of such. Her response, " they aren't Japanese. I'm Japanese. I know. Go check with them." This is no exaggeration. I stopped her and told her that was completely rude. She said it was busy so that's why she was rude. Finally, she brought out the same plates of salmon and chicken and the food was cold. When we asked for warm food she walked off and complained to her manager and made comments about us being cheap. I then asked for the check sans the entrees. I paid and as I was leaving this review she came back to the table to say that her daughter is half black and that she doesn't have a problem with black people. I then asked her to stop. The manager comes to remove plates and we talk to her and give her the details of our experience. Her response is " I'm sorry that happened I'll tell my boss. I won't be back. read more

Not sure what happened to this restaurant but things have changed and unfortunately, for the worst.. I haven't been in a while and decided to revisit when sushi craving attacked. First off, they dramatically downsized the portions while increasing the prices. 2 pieces of SASHIMI scallop and scallop are $7 each. Usually with sashimi you get 3 pieces. Angel roll which I normally get only had a tiny amount of black tobiko on top. Second, I ordered ikura with brown rice. It came over white rice and when I mentioned it to the waitress, she told me the sushi chef told her it was brown rice. Um.. I'm looking at it and it's definitely WHITE, dramatically so next to my brown rice roll. She walked away and came back with 2 brown rice balls. Seriously? It's like going to an italian place and they bring you the ingredients separately for you to put together yourself. I felt offended. No way would I go back again. So disappointing since there aren't many places in the area serving brown rice rolls. Back to Orient Express for me. They just lost a loyal customer. read more

I went here for dinner on a Saturday night around 8:30pm and it wasn't packed but pretty full. The service was attentive and our server was really nice. Once you're seated, they bring you hot lavender towels so that was a nice touch. Food: Started with the squid salad - small portion but not bad. Hoki Japanese Restaurant is unique in the fact that it very closely resembles an authentic Japanese restaurant that you would find in Tokyo or Kyoto. Having just spent two weeks in Japan last month, I can say for certain that the level of service, quality of fish, and prices all reflect what you would expect to find in Japan, all very high. The ambiance is quiet and romantic with a limited number of seats. The service is very attentive - they provide a hot towel upon seating and are quick to refill drinks and bring the food. If you are by yourself or with a friend, I recommend to sit at the sushi bar to get a view of the sushi chefs cutting up the fish and crafting the rolls. They have a wide selection of different rolls, sashimi, nigiri, and more. I would recommend to get hot green tea, try some sake if you drink alcohol (it's very good here) and order a speciality roll and an assortment of sashimi (yellowtail, tuna, and salmon are all good options). This will provide you with a very enjoyable experience and give you a good idea of what dining in Japan is like. Overall, the restaurant quality and service is worth 5 stars, but the prices are high, even higher than what you would find in Japan, therefore ultimately I settled on giving the restaurant 4 stars. If you are OK with spending the money and love the Japanese dining experience and food, then this place is definitely worth it. Went for dinner while in town on business. While I gave it a 4 star, it's really more like a 3.5 star. The staff was friendly and the food was good and fresh but there wasn't any "wow" factor about anything I had. I had agedashi tofu which had a nice chewy skin and soft interior but the tofu was bland and the dipping sauce also bland. The chirashi had fresh fish but the rice was too lightly seasoned, and the arrangement was average. Lastly, the hamachi kama was fresh and nicely broiled but there was too much seasoning on it and the dipping sauce tasted more like a soy sauce than a ponzu sauce. read more

Nice little spot. Not very big inside, but well appointed. Very fast and efficient service. Large menu and they also had a dry erase board up with a list of their freshest fish. My sushi test, if you will, is always a plain tuna roll (I want to see the quality of the fish). I wasn't a fan of their tuna - hence my 1 Star deduction. Me and my friend actually found this place through yelp. I saw they were 4 1/2 stars and we agreed to give it a go. The location isn't grey but that's no fault to the business. It's located in a little valley next to a Kroger. The parking was ungodly but not terrible. The place itself was very beautiful actually. Not to many people, nice music, and beautiful arrangement of chairs. I was wondering why yelp said to call for reservations, it's because I'm sure at night they are packed because the seating was very limited. So take heed and call. The menu was a little bland, but the beautiful waitress was very helpful in answering any questions we had and making suggestions to what we preferred. I got the makilo dinner. Comes with 2 6 rolls of your choice of sushi, soup and salad. I also got an order of sushi rice. The sushi rice was OMG amazing: it wasn't hit regular rice which is what I thought it was, just with a different name, they actually infuse the seaweed with the rice. No grain was left! The sushi (which I'm always a skeptic about) was delicious! My date and I both agreed that out of the majority of sushi places we have enjoyed, this ranked in the top 3. Even the salad was amazing! They use some type of orange citrus dressing that I would but by the bottle if they had it. Originally I didn't think it was going to be enough but it was 100% filling. If you are in the area and looking for some good sushi, do it! Oh and 21+ lol the lady didn't even ID me. The hot saki was just what I needed. Hoki Japanese Restaurant opened in April 2012 and took the place of Tomo, which moved to Buckhead. The restaurant is located in the Kroger shopping center at the corner of Cobb Parkway and Paces Mill Rd. Hoki is very similar to what Tomo used to be, both in its menu and its design. At first glance, it doesn't look like anything has changed and for the most part, it hasn't. Just a new name and a new owner/chef. It's still a decent spot to get authentic Japanese cuisine near Vinings. The restaurant isn't very big, but it doesn't need to be. The look is clean, simple, and modern. An L-shaped sushi bar is located in the back with small tables in the middle surrounded by cushioned wall seating. The space is naturally well lit from the outside. I was an occasional lunch customer at Tomo and probably will be for Hoki. The lunch menu consists of appetizers such as edamame (steamed soybeans), gyoza (steamed dumplings), and seaweed salad, bento boxes with various teriyaki and tempura meats, sushi (rolls, nigiri, and sashimi), and noodles such as udon, soba, and ramen. Apps run up to $6 each, bento boxes up to $12, sushi entrees up to $17, rolls generally up to $10, and all noodles are $9 each. Sushi-wise, there are over two dozen types of sushi to choose from including chutoro (medium fatty tuna), kampachi (Almaco jack), uni (sea urchin), and toro (super fatty tuna). Two pieces of nigiri (fish over rice) or sashimi (slice of fish only) mostly run about $7-8 per order with the more expensive pieces at $10+. It's a nice little Japanese menu for lunch. One welcome touch Hoki adds which exceeds that of most other Atlanta Japanese restaurants is in its plating. The presentation is quite elegant. Check out some of my photos to see what I'm talking about. Flawless white china, glass plates with interweaving design, etc. It adds to the dining experience. The sushi I've had is fresh and delicious. I recommend the scallop and toro (either toro). One type of sushi that is available, but not on the menu is the spicy scallop. Instead of a slice of scallop meat over rice (nigiri-style), the spicy scallop is chopped and mixed with a spicy sauce, then placed over rice and wrapped in dried seaweed. It's very good if you like sushi with spicy sauce -- not overly saucy, though. Also, even the "cheaper" fish, like salmon and tuna, look incredibly rich and smooth. The bento boxes are a popular choice because they're both a good value and offer a fine variety of food: miso soup, salad with ginger dressing, shumai (pork dumplings), bowl of white rice, California roll, teriyaki and/or tempura, and more. I have tried the miso ramen and it comes in a somewhat deceivingly small bowl. The miso ramen doesn't come with any meat except for shrimp tempura and imitation crab. Other ingredients include half a boiled egg, seaweed, chopped scallions, and a side of yellow pickled daikon radish. The ramen noodles themselves are yellow and actually resemble Top Ramen noodles (not to be insulting, but they do). Generally, the miso ramen is OK, not bad at all, but I can think of better places in metro Atlanta to get ramen: Umaido, Yakitori Jinbei, and Raku. True Traditional arrangements of fresh fish in a large ceramic bowl garnished with 2 thin slices of fresh radish, yellow pickled radish, shredded daikon, fancy cut of cooked egg, and a good amount thick cuts of seafood that tasted soooo fresh, accompanied with mixed green salad (not ice berg lettuce) with a semi-sweet delicious light sesame flavor dressing, followed with Hot Miso Soup w/ all the Traditional garnish modest amount of seaweed and small cuts of tofu..delicious ! Yes...I will be back....! Small place good thing I got there when I did by the time I was writing out my check the place was starting to fill up. Anyone who gives this place less then 5 stars doesn't know a thing about sushi. The seafood is so so fresh and the rolls are delicious. Try the lobster roll and the crispy spicy tuna and your in for a treat. People that don't see this as a hidden gem probably want some fancy sheik atmosphere which this place is not, it is in a shopping center and it's not a fancy Umi like setting. The service has dropped tremendously here since my last visit. The resturant was half empty when we walked in to the dining room and it still took 50 mins to get the first food to the table. For what they charge, this is inexcusable. The place seems to be much more "To Go" oriented and maybe takeout would have been a better experience. I used to love this place, so I was incredibly disappointed in the experience. It feels like they have changed ownership or something. This place is next to my apartment so I thought I'd give it a try. I was craving sashimi and nigiri today but didn't wanna drive too far. I ordered to go and I got the sashimi and sushi platter and Snow White roll. The platter came with 12 sashimi, 7 nigiri and spicy tuna maki. What I liked: Spicy tuna maki was unexpectedly good! The flavor was great. The Snow White roll was refreshing and well executed. It didn't have any strong flavors but all balanced well. The sea bass, avocado, and a little jalapeño and siracha sauce created an enticing taste. The roll was small though. What I didn't like: The sashimi was just average in terms of freshness and cut. All of the sashimi in my order were cut into very thin pieces.. thinner than other restaurants at similar price point. I mean... it was just very very THIN. I've ordered sashimi to go at other places and were much thicker than what they're offering here. The sashimi photos on yelp appear to be thicker cuts but if you order to go is another story. Same goes with the nigiris. In terms of freshness, it was okay. Again, pretty average compare to other places with similar price. read more

Going into HOKI I was expecting another strip mall, utility sushi place: unoffending but forgettable. But a few servings of otoro nigiri and some black cod miso later and I realized this place is playing by a better set of rules. The attention to detail was there: the "good" rice, the proper temperature control of both rice and fish, never veering into chilly territory. Also they have expanded choices for nigiri and sashimi including some live scallop, live urchin, and squid. Definitely worth a visit and given that it's quite a cozy place, it makes for a perfect date night destination. read more

This excellent Japanese restaurant has outstanding hot and raw food. High-quality fish makes a big difference, so I welcome places that serve the best available. I moved about a mile away, so this is one stays on the list. The Pink Lady roll is terrific, try it. Just order it when you sit down. It has tuna and crunchy and I think avocado. It uses the soy wrapper so it is incredibly tender. I also liked the popcorn okra, a tempura dish that does justice to this local favorite. I've also tried the teriyaki salmon, assorted nigiri, and the tuna tataki. All were great so I look forward to exploring the menu. The atmosphere is warm, a bit dark compared to other sushi restaurants, and that makes it nice for cozy and quiet dinner conversation. Service here is friendly and helpful, it's a small place and I find them attentive and accurate. One negative is the fragrance on the hot towels they provide. I have to go wash my hands if I use them because the smell competes with the taste of the food. If you are sensitive to smells, you should not accept the offer of hot towels. read more

Excellent! We found another very good sushi place to check out when we're in the Cumberland area. We came at about 6pm on a Saturday night, and it was crowded, but not packed. No issue getting a table, and our order came out fairly quickly after we ordered. The sushi itself was some of the best sushi we've had so far in Atlanta. The rice had a nice chewy and fresh flavor to it, and the fish seemed fresh and flavorful as well. Our favorite roll was the Snow White, followed by the Super EBI, the spicy tuna, and the Alaska. The service was friendly and fast, and we will be back next time we're in the area! read more

This is the worst place to eat. I was visiting and went to this restaurant the service is terrible. Waited forever food to be done over an hour. I asked for a discount because of the long wait. People who came in after I came in were served and left before my table received there food. Instead I got a bill for $241 that included a $35 dollar gratuity.
