Holdaak is one of the most unique chicken shops out right now, and in one of the best ways possible. Hot chicken might be the current trend, but Holdaak stuck to their own style that holds its own amongst the rest. I was interested in Holdaak when they first opened because it seemed like a Korean spin on the most popular Nashville Hot chicken restaurant in California, from the menu style to the chicken. I was completely thrown off on my first visit, because it is absolutely nothing like hot chicken or Korean fried chicken flavourwise, in the most pleasant way. While they do serve a variety of Korean fried chicken style wings and sauces, the main stars in my opinion are the spicy tenders and sandwiches. The sandwich is very well balanced with the pickled vegetables, which are a nice change of pace from the typical mayo/vinegar coleslaw bunches found in other chicken shops. They help round out the comeback sauce, which is more mayo heavy and seems to complement carbs much more than any other "signature" sauce I've had. The best way to summarise the sandwich is as if there was a fried chicken banh mi, spiced with hot pot flavours. On that note, the seasoning of the chicken truly does remind me of hot pot. That's a bit broad, but there's strong umami flavours throughout each bite as if it was powdered with dried up Szechuan stock. I'm not familiar enough with my spices to discern the taste that well, but it's truly unique to Holdaak and keeps me coming back for more. On top of that, the breading has an great amount of texture to it that keeps each bite crunchy. The fries are cut well thickness wise and dusted with similar seasoning, with the slice of bread buttered and toasted on one side. These are served with every order of tenders and while they are just sides, they're ridiculously addicting and pair well with the sauce. I never really dip toast or fries in these sauces at other shops since it becomes a bit much, but there's a slight sweetness that keeps me coming back for more at Holdaak. Originally, I found that the breading did not hold up very well and often found myself pulling complete tenders out of their "shell" with my teeth. Despite this, I continued to enjoy the tenders almost every month and over time this no longer became an issue. Props to Holdaak for this improvement over time, while maintaining consistent taste! Holdaak holds a strong place in my heart now as my go to comfort food. The menu items have strong value and taste, while also being available relatively late at night. Okay. Listen up Fullerton peeps , listen closely. This is not a 5 star review because like it wasn't bad. This is a 5 star review because the quality, moistness , originality , menu simplicity and staff appropriately is superb. The chicken is moist, juicy and flakely delicious. This makes Raising Canes seem dry and mediocre. The bread it was on was apparent to soak up the oil ? I'm not sure ? Maybe not eat it? I did anyways cause I'm fat. Anyways, the sauce. Completely different approach than Canes, and rightfully so. It's on the citrusy sweeter side. Don't mistake that description as eating sugar but it leans sweet rather than savory or spiced. Further more. The nice takeout box look is different than the standard plastic take out box. This place is 5/5. I compared it at the same time with a purchase of Clydes Chicken down the street in DTF and this one wins. Chicken is breaded to perfection. The fries are in their own seasoned class. Take a Jack in Box curly fry , untwist it and make them cooked like a restaurant made them and you have Holdaak's Shake Fries. I unfortunately did not try their shakes, or coleslaw. The other slaw is pickled sandwich toppings. I will be honest I do not like pickled foods. I had my bf try it and he gives it 4/5 sooo can't speak on that. HOLD UP! I may have just found a top contender for my favorite chicken joint! Holdaak has been on my radar for some time now and I was finally in the area to check it out. We ordered the 5 Piece Regular and 5 Piece Spicy Tenders for my partner and myself and that was MORE than enough food. *Suggestion: If you're moderately hungry, the 3 Piece Tenders are sufficient.* The tenders were a great size and super crunchy even after the 20 minute drive home. The fries were phenomenal and seasoned very well. I did like that they offer two sauces with the order (Comeback and Ranch) and they paired well with both the regular and spicy tenders. Their ranch is more on the runny side but I actually preferred it for the tenders because it coated them well and I had plenty for all 5 tenders (as opposed when the ranch is thick and I get too carried away, usually lasts about 3 tenders). The regular tenders were good and flavorful but I definitely recommend the spicy option. They weren't too hot "like Hot Cheeto hot" -(Holdaak Employee) and he was spot on with the comparison. They had a light heat that snuck up on you but the spices on the tender were super flavorful. Also, I was thoroughly impressed by the price and speed of the order. The order was completed in about 5-7 minutes (it was piping hot and fresh) and ran about the same price as Raising Canes. The 'spicy' chicken sandwich is just okay. I'm from Los Angeles, so we have Howlin' Rays, Kluckin Chicken, and Dave's Hot Chicken. These places give 'spicy' a whole new meaning. The spicy sandwich at Holdaak is the equivalent to like 'mild' at these three legendary chickz sandwiches. And when I mean mild, it kinda just tickles my taste buds. This place is honestly my favorite place to go for chicken wings and their chicken sandwiches are so great. I think their special sauce makes this place. I typically go with my partner and we split the spicy chicken sand which, get a side of fries and get 12 wings (half spicy, half caramel soy) and the total comes out to be around 25$ NOT BAD FOR THE PRICE. Finally got to try Holdaak few weekend ago, and it had it's pluses and minus. The combo menu was a great deal with fries and drink. Sandwich was big and fries were delicious. The buns were delish too. However, I felt the chicken itself lacked flavor and quality. Maybe the chicken/batter needs some spices in it to give it a good flavor, instead of just relying on the radish and the sauce for flavor. Overall, it's a great meal for the price and I can see why it's so popular. However, I think something needs to be done to spruce up the chicken/batter itself. Until then, I'll eat my chicken sandwich (El Jefe) at Bruxies, which is pricier, but packs a flavor punch to be worth the extra. I think Holdaak owner should try the El Jefe and see if they can up the flavor to become a full 5 star, since the fries and value are already winners here. read more

Ranch sauce as others have mentioned, is more on the watery side. The only thing is they don't seal the bags for food delivery service. 80% of the places we order from have some kind of tamper seal or even staples or tape. We made our first visit based on a recommendation from a friend. We tried the spicy and regular chicken sandwiches, chicken salad, wings and a side of slaw. The sandwich and salad are paired with pickled vegetables (think Lee Sandwiches). I enjoyed the combo but our boys removed the veggies. Holdaak! My brother introduced me to this place at the start of quarantine, and I have been hooked ever since! Best chicken tenders EVER! I am very picky with tenders. I am not just going to waste calories on dry tenders (*cough raising canes*) or tenders from a bag. These are hand breaded and packed full of flavor. The meals are very filling. A 3 piece is more than plenty for me. My husband orders the 5 piece and shares with my grandpa. The fries are yummy, as is the cole slaw and toast. I like that the bread is not super thick. I also love the ranch dipping sauce. I am usually not a ranch fan, but this one is different in a good way. This is a great spot for take out, in these crazy times. Ordered online on a Thursday morning and they were done within 10 minutes. Drove home in 15 minutes and the wings were still hot and crispy. Not soggy at all. Maybe because it's in cardboard to-gos with plenty of airflow? The spicy wings would be considered medium spicy or even mild for more hardcore tolerances. My delicate flower of a family couldn't handle it though so definitely don't recommend if you're not used to spice. However, I am and I thought it was a fantastic blend of spicy but also flavor. I used to love coming here but after seeing the large hike in price and lesser value, I would have to think seriously before coming back. We have been huge, loyal fans of Holdaak since they first opened. I understand the cost of inflation has to be passed on to the customers. I had noticed the gradual increase in prices. However, jumping from $8 for 3 strips and fries to $12.95 for 2 "jumbo" strips and fries is steep. No clue if jumbo is any larger than the original strip. There are no longer the 3 strip or 5 strip option. Yes Holdaak, you have a large following but at some point , people are going to stop coming since there is little bang for their buck. I had to order chicken in increments of two. *The menu in itself is confusing. I really don't understand how Holdaak quality fell off so badly. I used to get it at least twice a month and used to enjoy their wings. The wings used to be quite large and not fatty. The last few times, the wings were small and fatty, on par with the frozen wings in your local grocery store. For $35 I'll save my money and just buy 7 bags of the store bought wings. Food was good, place was clean, and service was fast. We had the spicy chicken sandwich with fries and regular chicken sandwich combo with fries and drink. Omit the combo with drink and you get more fries! The fries that comes in the combo is smaller size. Both spicy and regular chicken was sooooo gooood. It was super juicy and super tender. My guess is because they use chicken thigh. Breading was amazing. It was crispy but not heavy. The radish pickle inside the sandwich makes it refreshing and lightens up the fat (I removed the pickled red onion because I don't like it - my guess is you can request it if you don't want it). The size makes it a little hard to eat, though. The chicken is so big and the pickles added height to it. There is no way it won't be messy, unless you split it in half.
