I took my boyfriend here for his birthday. I made reservations almost 3 weeks in advanced for 2 people at 8pm. We did not get seated until 9:15. We did not complain or make a fuss because we saw how busy the restaurant was. It was just very unfortunate that tables larger than 2 were getting seated before us. The atmosphere of the restaurant for Christmas was beautiful. I would definitely consider this a tourist spot. The Caesar salad and burrata was amazing, definitely recomend ordering for start. For my main course I had the ragu del macellaio which the meat was delicious, but the pasta was a little too over cooked for me. I spent about an Hour looking at reviews of Italian places around little Italy and finally landed on this location. We jumped on the subway and it took about 65 minutes for us to get from our hotel to walking in this place. So it was a bit of a trek I'll just tell ya. We made reservations for 1:30 but it wasn't needed because there was only 1 other table when we arrived. The waiters seemed nice and we started our order. My daughter ordered chicken Parmesan and I told the guy I wanted spaghetti and meatballs and he nodded like he knew what I asked for and he walked off. No bid deal we just sat there and chilled enjoying the inside of this place because it's set up really nice. It was about 15 minutes and our order showed up and I was like WTH is this because that isn't what I ordered. He called it Sunday special rigatoni. I just looked at him and said well sir that isn't spaghetti and I only see one meatball and what looks like sausage and some type of pork. He said that is all they have. Listen I'm not one to send food back just because I have worked in the food industry and know what happens when food is sent back to the chef. Nothing good I'll just tell ya right now. By then he had already walked off and my daughter said well what are u going to do. I'm like well hell I guess I'll eat the meat ball and the crazy think noodle but this isn't what I wanted. Keep in mind this was my first time to little Italy and I really Frecking wanted spaghetti and meatballs so I was already frustrated. So about this dish I didn't eat the sausage or the pork. It just got shoved to the side. The one meatball that they had in there was epic and cooked perfectly. Seriously why the heck did this happen. Great ambiance inside the restaurant. We passed by this restaurant multiple times and decided to have dinner here. Wasn't all I thought it was. There was someone going around and playing music, which was nice. Someone came around taking pictures, which we thought was nice as well. Both occasions we had to pay or shall I say "mandatory payment". Again, we didn't mind because we were in good company. I had a few appetizers, and the meatball was delicious! I had the special for the night which was a steak topped with olives, peppers and capers. That was the most over salted piece of meat I have ever had in my life. Customer service was decent, I expected better table service. When we sat down we had someone bring us water and bread, which not sure if the bread offered was suppose to be cold. Came here with a group of NYC lady friends for a holiday dinner and gift exchange. I loved the ambiance and the lighting. The vibe was low-key and the noise level was a murmur - unlike some of the boisterous places on the same block. The service was also very friendly and accommodating, but not overly aggressive. The server knew to leave us time for our celebration. We ordered a bottle of barbera for the table that was delicious. For dinner, they had a lobster ravioli special that I had to get, because two of the magic words for me are: lobster and ravioli. We had a few appetizers for the table that everyone enjoyed: the burrata, bruschetta, and stuffed mushrooms got thumbs up all around. I was in NYC recently. I looked online for an Italian restaurant to grab a bite to eat in Little Italy. Il Cortile consistently popped up on lists as a place to visit when in Little Italy. Off we go. First off, my guess is that some palms were greased in order for this place to be on any list. Secondly, we should've left immediately when we were given stale bread. Thirdly, how do you ruin a martini? Moreover, and most importantly, our meals sucked! My girlfriend ordered a dish that the restaurant only serves on the weekend; one would think it would be an amazing house specialty, right? Wrong! It was a pasta dish with a meatball and some mystery meat; I think it was called the Weekend Special Rigatoni. However, that dish was good when compared to mine....and mine was bad. Hell, we didn't even finish our plates; the waiter asked if we wanted to take our leftovers home and our response, in unison, was "Oh, god no!" Overall, the whole experience was god-awful and a waste of nearly $200. I suggest visiting a new school Italian restaurant like Auroura in Williamsburg or visit Serra at Eataly at the Flatiron Building. Anything other than Il Cortile. read more

I've been to Il Cortile twice now, both times with my aunt and uncle who live in Long Island. Whenever I drive down from Rochester, we always try to meet in the city for a meal, and my uncle is fond of this place. The dining area is large, we can always get seated at any time despite no reservation, food is solid, and it is quiet enough for us to have a conversation. On my most recent visit we shared a variety of dishes for a late lunch/early dinner: --appetizer 1: giant polpetta (meatball) in tomato sauce (4 of us eating; each had a good size chunk) --appetizer 2: avocado bruschetta toast, with blue cheese crumbles and balsamic drizzle (holy crap was that good!) --dish 1: Lobster Ravioli (my husband and I split this and I'm glad we did because each half was still large; sauce was awesome; ravioli were fresh made and there were lots of large pieces of lobster) --dish 2: veal scallopini (5 large pieces of veal in the rich sauce - my uncle finished this all on his own!) --dish 3: eggplant rollatini (we expected this to be one of the smaller mains, but it was huge! The thinly sliced eggplant was rolled with herbs and smothered in cheese and sauce and roasted - it is definitely something that should always be on the table!) All of the food was luscious. The combination of rich flavors, the portion sizes, everything was very pleasing. Despite us thinking there would be left overs, we finished everything off, plus had dessert and coffees.....and then proceeded outside to walk for several blocks in the snow to try to digest! To the other reviewers, yes, the atmosphere here is a little dated, but to us, it's like going back in time to the late 1970s or early 1980s; there's a focus on comfort and a homey quality to the atmosphere. And I love that the waiters are all Italian and speak Italian (and generously humored me as I practiced my nascent Italian language skills while ordering....) Why only the 4 stars? I realize this is NYC and everything is ala cart, but I think diners should get a small salad as part of the meal when they are spending $25 or more per plate. It's a petty complaint (first world problem for sure), and we certainly did not want for food, but that's my opinion. We will definitely be back, I am sure! read more

We ventured from downtown to Little Italy for a Sunday lunch, on a recommendation to enjoy an authentic Italian meal. We were told we would be treated like family, and that we should sit in the Garden Room and ask for Angelo. The man who was at the front of the bar when we came in was not overly friendly. In fact, had we not just taken a cab 25 minutes to arrive, we might have walked out upon arrival. He was abrupt and dismissive. We asked for the owner, who had been given to us by name to ask for, and was told he was not there. We asked to be seated in the Garden Room, and was told we could not be. (Empty tables were there throughout our meal). We were not able to be seated with the waiter we were told to ask for. We eventually sat near a window in the front of the restaurant which was okay, but drafty, and the Garden Room looked beautiful, but we were instead seated by the bar, which was just "eh". The service was good. Not the personal attentive service we had been told about, but good. We ordered burrata app, and zucchini app. Both good. The gnocchi was large and not the usual small gnocchi I expected (would have helped to explain that when I ordered). The wine was good. It being Christmas time, we did watch many onlookers pass by the window. While that was nice, we wanted a genuine Italian meal in an ambience and not a Macys window experience. The seating inside the Garden Room would have, I think, been better. We did have reservations and we did get there on time. We were only 2 people. We had been given a personal recommendation by a relative of the owner to go there but that name was ignored, as was our request for a certain server and seating. It was good food but the service and ambiance did not warrant us leaving downtown NYC for a cab ride for this meal. If I was in the area I would think about returning. It is a shame because the experience could have been so much better. Maybe if the owner was there. Maybe, it would have been wonderful. read more

The linguine clams was the worst my spouse has ever had. The Pollo Francese was a soppy, rubbery mess, accompanied by over steamed and garlicky kale. The chicken parm was soupy and tough. Service was bad but not their fault since it was San Genaro and they were slammed. Ambience was fine and I don't mind gross Italian American food but I do mind paying a lot for it. My long time (10+ years) favorite Italian joint on Mulberry has been Lunella Ristorante, but on this trip I wanted to spread my wings and try new places. We were quickly seated at one of the few outdoor tables. It was a sunny and mild day for early April, so it was nice to be able to take in the nice weather. It's definitely enjoyable to sit outdoors and people watch. The portion size was very small, but it was fresh and tasty. I got ravioli and it was 4 small ones, 6 would be have been better. So I was in New York, more specifically Manhattan. I was told the Italian Food in New York was delicious, which I found out by trial and error was incorrect in my opinion. I Google searched best Italian restaurants and searched on Instagram for the best restaurants to eat Italian Food in Little Italy. The restaurant was well reviewed, high ratings and on the top three of every list I saw. I convinced my wife and two other friends to give it a try. We were greeted by a wonderful, polite and amazing hostess. She was Turkish but seemed to know a lot about Italian food and recommended a few dishes. Once she seated us we were being served by another amazing staff member he was Italian American, Sicilian to be specific and a true Native of Brooklyn. We had great time with him and he as well gave his recommendations for food. I gave them the benefit of the doubt and ordered the suggested dishes. We ordered cocktails but I think wine would have been better suited especially because the prices weren't bad at all. Cocktail were average at best. We ordered some apps which were the Burrata and Pan Seared Pear. That actually wasn't bad at all. It worked well together. The other app we ordered was the Mozzarella in Carozza which I personally didn't like but my friends liked the Pablo type of crust it had. Next came our mains. My wife and I decided to share dishes, she ordered Ravioli stuffed with crab and cognac crème sauce. I ordered the stuffed Veal chop with the bone In. The ravioli came out and there was 4 pieces of Ravioli. The sauce looked watery but I dug in to give it a chance. The ravioli were a disaster, they were way too soft and as soon as you cut the piece the pasta could hold the filling and broke apart. The sauce was heavily salted. I didn't not enjoy that dish at all. The stuffed veal wasn't what I expected at all. When it came out it was this round ball that lucked like a giant meatball that they stuffed and inserted a bone. The veal wasn't stuffed rather than rolled like an involtini and it actually did have the bone Inserted in. The meat was cooked fine and heavily stuffed which was the only good thing. It had this gravy sauce with mushrooms that was again overly salted and to the point I felt like my body was shutting down. There was no taste to the food but salt. It was awful. I tried my friends Penne alla Vodka which thank Gid was at least cooked somewhat Al Dente but the sauce wasn't tasty at all. My other friend ordered Sunday Sugo which was Sausage, Braciole and Ribs cooked in Tomato Sauce the sauce wasn't bad at all. The sauce was very very sweet though, too sweet for my likings to ever order again but the meat was cooked in the sauce and very soft. The ambiance was a very nice setting, clean, well arranged and decorated. The staff were amazing and made me feel comfortable and welcomed. If you are looking to have good conversation with the staff and a welcoming, warm and beautiful environment then Il Cortile is the spot but if you're going to have a good authentic Italian meal or just an overall culinary experience the.
