My ribeye was one of the best steaks in my life - even better than my recent visit to Manny's in my opinion. The server was nice but odd and VERY opinionated about what we ordered. That could be good or bad. The helpers or bus people were too anxious to take dishes. A couple of times picking up plates without asking if we were finished - and we were not. The scallops my friend ordered seemed less than expected. There wasn't much on the plate. I'm told the ribs were very good and my wife loved the tenderness and flavor of the pot roast. Overall the 6 of us had a very enjoyable evening but mainly because we really like one another as friends. As always the building and atmosphere were spot on. read more

We had reservations for 7:00PM on Saturday for a 50th Birthday for a party of 10. We all were seated and we ordered our food. The bread came out and the there were no plates for it and the dark bread seemed a little stale. After having the bread and waiting on dinner, the waiter came out and then told us that they were out of prime rib, which 7 out of the 10 people had ordered. This was at least 20 minutes after ordering. Can you imagine what a disappointment it was to be told that when that was the real reason we decided on Jax. We would have left but it is hard to find a place that can accommodate 10 people at 8:00PM on a Saturday. The food we did get was pretty pedestrian for a place with a reputation like Jax. The service was substandard for Jax and we had ordered another beer and canceled after 15 minutes. It will be a Birthday Celebration that we won't forget so at least it was memorable. read more

As a first timer, I was really blown away by the ambiance. It has this old school charm that I haven't experienced any where else-except for the Lexington-except Jax is way better than the Lexington! The place is quite large - you walk immediately into the bar area and have to walk past the bartenders to see a host for seating. The thing I noticed immediately was the piano in the middle of the restaurant. It's so nice to be serenaded by live piano music when you dine. Jax Cafe put a personal touch on our group dinner by printing us "Friendsgiving Dinner" matchbooks, which I loved. Service was on point, never once were we low on water, food arrived quickly, and our server was kind enough to lead us through the kitchen so we could go outside and take photos with the light display (patio was closed). Food wise though - it was just OK for me. It's not the highlight IMO. A petite filet mignon is expensive!! $54 is more than I'm willing to pay. I had an open faced meatloaf sandwich which didn't come with anything else but a pickle and it cost $18. Plus it was a salt bomb, EWW. Dessert was meh because the molten chocolate lava cake wasn't that molten or lava. Friends were a bit disappointed with that. The one food item that I will rave about is the house dressing. I know, even I'm surprised. It looks like a caesar but it's garlic parmesan and oh so delicious. They sell it by the pint or quart ($6/pint) but because it's made fresh weekly, you have to consume the whole bottle within 7 days or it goes bad. That's the only bummer but at least it's super fresh. I don't rule out just coming to Jax in the future and buying a bottle of dressing to go. That's how much I loved it! But besides the salad dressing and ambiance, there's not much about Jax that would bring me back. The food is only 3 out of 5 stars IMO. read more

What a great experience! My daughter and I went in for Sunday brunch to celebrate an Iowa Hawkeye victory. Being from small town Iowa finding parking in the big city always gives me anxiety. At Jax, the parking is wide open and accessible. We were sat on the patio where Luis quickly turned on the heater for us. My daughter enjoyed looking at the trout in the pond . Luis was an attentive and helpful, and even let us order off the dinner menu as my daughter wanted a filet brunch I had the prime rib was delicious. We started off with a shrimp cocktail and a giant cinnamon roll. Shout out to the Pair and a Spare podcast they always recommend Jax. I'm honestly surprised I've never written a review for this place. I've visited countless times and every experience has been great. This place just reopened due to some structural issues and having been closed for several months I believe. Jax Cafe is a true Minneapolis gem with an old-school supper club type vibe you just don't find any more. This place is a little bit on the expensive side. But they have top quality steaks and seafood items. When making a reservation online you can add a note to your reservation. When you do this they will print your small message on a match book. Such a unique touch. We ordered the crabcakes, crab rolls and a steak just the other night. The steak was fantastic and perfectly cooked medium rare to our liking. The crab rolls are a definite must I've never seen these served anywhere but here. Who doesn't like crab rolled up in a dough flakey crust. The crabcakes are not what I remembered then being. They were a bit too creamy and not as firm as I recall. I did spy some tasty looking lobsters in the tank maybe next time I'll go that route. The patio is closed for the season but they have a really cute reindeer and Santa display outside that you can view from the window. The manager even allowed us to go outside and get a cute photo together. This patio in the summertime is epic with the trout swimming through the stream on the patio. 10/10 totally recommend! read more

I wanted to share my alarming experience that I had here last night. We walk in, and it's beautiful and we get a nice booth in the bar. We have a group of seven. We order our seasonal cocktails. Once served, this is where the problems begin. I would like to mention that our waiter's name is Mark. I got the candy cane martini and I understand how difficult it can be to carry a martini from bar to table, but the amount missing out of my glass was almost laughable, especially for a $15 cocktail. It looked like someone had taken two big gulps out of the glass already. I assume that some of my drink spilled when he spilled someone else's drink in our party on his way over to the table. I asked for some more and he nodded. It still did not fill the glass, but fine. (I also would like to mention, two others in our group got the Tom and Jerry's cocktail. This drink is classically served hot or warm. These were served room temperature. Just FYI to Tom and Jerry lovers - but they did rave about the flavor of the drink!) Moving on to ordering dinner and this is where one of the most shocking experiences I have ever had in a restaurant. I would first like to mention, he was very rude just while we were ordering, cutting us off and telling the next person to hold on hold on hold on, I still need to get their order down, just very disrespectful. My dad has celiac disease and it is a very serious, one where he was once deathly ill before a diagnosis. We have to be very careful when we are out and their menu does not mention gluten free options, so we need to communicate with the waiter a bit more and here is how that went: My dad asked Mark the waiter if they have a gluten free bun. He nods yes. My dad says he will get the Jax burger then. One of my parents friend clarifies with the waiter that the burger is gluten free. He cuts her off with "Yes mam, Yes mam, I get it. GLUTEN FREE" and laughs condescendingly. My mom interjects that this is not a laughing matter and he has celiac disease. He cuts her off and said "I get it, he needs gluten free. I am not going to serve gluten to a gluten free person." He resumed taking orders and then came back to my mom and said "I have been told gluten free three times." Like he was trying to explain his little outburst with us. To hear how Mark was speaking to my parents, our friends, it made me sick to my stomach. My dad just stunned, as we have never had this happen before. To make someone feel like they are putting out the waiter and to be so condescending and laugh at a serious situation, that can make a table of people feel pretty awful. We get the food, which was probably the best part of the experience but the busboy asked us twice if he could clear a plate that still had food on it, like a full pierogi and sausage and pretzels. No one seemed happy to be there and no one seemed happy to have us there. To go from having a wonderful evening at the Heights theatre, we expected to end the fun, festive night in such a different way. As a group coming in paying for specialty cocktails and full meals, I expected so much more. We did not ask for treatment like that, we were not a group of "Karens." I have never experienced the treatment we received last night and I would have a very, very difficult time coming back. read more

Jax is a genuine local treasure. A traditional, formal but not stuffy neighborhood institution that has stood the test of time with class and by sustaining a dedication to excellence. Years ago I booked Jax for a surprise 40th birthday party for my wife and invited ~20 friends and family. They were superb hosts. We sat on the spacious back patio enjoying the fine food and casual elegance. More recently I've enjoyed their lavish and very well prepared brunch, hearty, satisfying and top notch steak dinners and have attended a few events upstairs. This is a standout place at any time of the year. In the summer, it's gorgeous in the garden under the lovely trees. In the fall the outdoor fireplace crackles & they have v blankets if needed. In winter the dark wood and white tablecloths and shining silverware offer a old world ambiance. Waitstaff are well informed and offer suggestions if needed but aren't upselling you. Decent wine list. And the food, no matter what I've ordered over the many years I've visited, outstanding. Today at lunch I had the Chicken Pot pie. Funny how things work - we wanted to go to one Steakhouse who couldn't accommodate our group. I asked them for a recommendation and they recommended me to a second Steakhouse who couldn't accommodate our group. I asked them for a recommendation and we ended up here at Jax's. For a Wednesday night, this place was BUSY. But we (a 15 person group) had a reservation and were' seated immediately. Unfortunately, it was close to 45 minutes before our orders were taken. But we'd been cautioned by the wait person and they kept us fairly well lubricated so it wasn't as much of an issue as it could have been. Once food was placed in front of us, the table went generally quiet. Presentation was great, portion size on all of our meals was impressive. I'd ordered scallops with sauteed spinach. In this kind of order, I generally only receive three scallops but I got four beautifully prepared pieces. I even shared one with a "non-fish" person next to me who remarked on the silky and flavorful taste. And I got a portion of her filet mignon which was outstanding. We dropped almost $1,100 (before tip) at Jax. Well worth it, and we'll be back if ever the occasion arises. read more

Some gals I went to High School with in Roseville meet for lunch a couple times a year, and we went all out this time with The Jax Cafe. What a treat and a flashback in time. While the location is iffy, it wasn't always! So retro interior, just FABULOUS !!! There were even 2 old style phone booths. I can only imagine what celebrities made calls from there. I almost expected Frank Sinatra or Sammy Davis Jr to walk around the corner and shake our hands. Almost all of us ordered the Lobster Roll, and while not outstanding, it was still delish. I did order the in house fried potato chips, and I think they were overcooked. Who cares. And then, I also got the French Onion Soup.....BINGO! Perfectly seasoned for my taste buds, and conveniently served in a stable bowl. I really did expect it to be served in a traditional pedestal bowl, but thank goodness it wasn't. Our servers were tastefully dressed in tuxedo shirts and black skirts/pants. How nice to not have a server with holey jeans and a t shirt. Pure class. Loved it. Totally professional too. Perfect service on the patio. And of course a true supper club would not be complete without an enormous coat check. My husband invited me for a dinner in JAX cafe to celebrate the International women's day on March,8. Well, I really enjoyed the vibe, ambiance, live piano music - unobtrusive, but very sophisticated... Everything was excellent except for the food. The oysters were not fresh, stinky; I said to the waiter (he was great, by the way), that those were the worst oysters in my life, and he promised to communicate this to somebody... I ordered sea-bass for main course, my husband - a big lobster tail. Both could be much better. Seabass was not fresh, obviously frozen many times, and the lobster tail was rubber-ish. Overall, the place is classy and has all the components for fine dining, but - they have to replace the chef, as soon as possible. The cuisine is a disaster, in my opinion. The poor quality oysters were compensated with a complimentary desert; you are never disappointed in a desert in American restaurant, it was good. read more

I think at its heart, Jax is best described as a nice old-school place (in a good way) that serves a pretty solid brunch buffet. And I love brunch. Seriously -- brunch is the highlight of my weekend sometimes. The brunch is impressive in size and scope, and the offerings were far beyond a typical brunch buffet. 1) There was a cold table with pasta salads, an array of fresh fruit, the poached salmon, deviled eggs and some other odds and ends. At the end of this table was an assortment of pastries, including the most delicous sticky buns... mmmmm. 2) The hot table offered bacon, sausage, quiche, a delightful mini Belgian waffle, which was killer, a carving station with roast beef and turkey offerings, eggs benedict and the omelet station. I'd encourage you to look down as you are browsing this table because often there are sauces meant to go with the various items down below... like there was a horseradish sauce for the roast beef on the table, and my husband saw an au jus at the end of the table. 3) And the dessert table offered a nice variety for those who had room left in their stomachs... there was fun chocolate mousse (though no small bowls or something to put it in... you basically had to scrape some off the serving spoon onto your plate), cakes, cheesecake, pies and two warm cobbler type options too. Quality wise I would say the food was good. This isn't a froo-froo place. You won't find options that will raise your eyebrows -- no funky flavor combinations or caviar-topped anything here. But if you're craving some good brunch food, this is a good place to go. I was uber-impressed with the eggs benedict. Even though it was on a buffet, the eggs were perfectly poached. The hollandaise sauce was perfect -- light, buttery, lemony and (most impresively) not broken, runny or old-looking. Delicious. The bacon was good -- I see why everyone here likes it -- thick and almost candied in flavor. The sausage was better than most and browned to perfection. The sticky buns were unreal. I had two and wished that there was an option to take a dozen home for later. And I loved the little Belgian waffle, which was airy, crispy and most importantly HOT, with a big poof of whipped cream on top. Mmmmm. Our server was nice and knowledgeable and did a good job of explaining the layout to us (where the tables were, what was offered on each, the fact that the made-to-order omelets would be delivered to us so we didn't have to wait, etc.) Our water glasses and coffee mugs never went more than half empty and at one point I even though the servers were a bit too overzealous in refilling our beverages. (When's the last time you thought THAT at a restaurant??) Atmosphere-wise, Jax is old but well maintained. Dark wood, dark lighting and traditional food. But you can see why they've been around for decades. They know what they do well, what people come to them for, and they execute it flawlessly. For cost, I'd say it's in the ballpark. Coffee is included in the $21 or so price... so you wind up at just below $50 for two after tax and such. Kids are $10 I think, and kids under 3 eat free. It's certainly not a cheap lunch, but I have to say that I have had far less food and far worse food for $21, so in all I'd say the value is good. A nice place for brunch for a special occasion (see all the other reviews about the matchbooks). Bonus points to the hostess, who took our name, looked up our reservation and then wished me a happy birthday immediately. Judging by how crowded it was by the time we left, I'd say a reservation is definitely worth the phone call. Go hungry, craving good brunch food and emerge happy. That's all I can say. I've been visiting Jax since I was a child. I've never had anything disappointing - until today. My sister and I both had the Lobster Roll sandwich for lunch. It was awful. I'm not sure what was used to season the lobster salad, but it completely overpowered the other ingredients. We couldn't even taste the lobster. It was horribly sweet with a bad aftertaste. Went in for dinner. I was new to town and we wanted to try the local fish walleye. They serve it pan fried with a small sauce over rice. The fish was ok.. needed some salt so that's why 4 stars. The place itself was beautiful. We sat on the inside.. they had a live piano player and the patio was beautiful with lots of lights and green plants. It's the prefect date night place. Truly disappointed with Jax. Made reservations there for our 50th anniversary for 12 people 3 weeks prior to the event, ordered champagne and a cake. Called the day before the event to confirm and much to our surprise it is closed for remodeling for 2 - 4 months. Had we not called we'd be standing on the street trying to figure what to do. Of course, now the restaurant are opening back up everyone is totally book. Jax did not even had the curtsy to call to let us know so we could make other arrangements. So far we have left 2 voice messages and there has been no response. Not everyone is lucky enough to make this mile stone, Jax has really fallen short from the mark and we do not intend to go there again. read more
