If I could give them negative stars I would. This establishment only caters to regulars. Tourists be ware they will not serve you if a local or regular doesn't want you around. Locals influenced the bar tender not to serve us because we were in their "seats". They let an opinion of a local influence the decision a bartender should have made. A local started talking poorly of my friend and saying he was overly inebriated. My friend sat quietly at the bar and was refused to be served. I understand if my friend was causing ruckus at the bar, however he was just sitting quietly at the bar. Yes he had a few drinks, but who comes a to a bar to be sober. The bar tenders have extremely poor judgment and I, nor any of my friends will be coming back to this bar. Locals have too much influence in who enters this bar apparently and will not let newcomers in. So much for an up and coming long beach. Hope this place dies out with the rest of its older clientele. So THIS is where everyone gets those T-shirts from. I feel like I'm in the know now, and I feel pretty stupid for not coming here before. Don't expect anything glamourous. This is a down and dirty bar. The front area is where you want to be. The bar is long, the drinks and cold, and they have redhook on tap. I'm a fan. I wanted to try their hotdog sandwich on rye, but I was too full from all the beer. I was able to snag a pickled pepper (they serve them with their pickled eggs) and WOWZERS it was hot and good. Their fresh roasted peanuts were pretty tasty too. I came here with the Danimal and My Man, talk about awesome company! It's on the corner of Anaheim and Temple. I always pass by this place on the way to Alex's Bar and think: I need to hang out there more often. It's a jovial place, not to mention a local legend. You can get your schooner of beer and liverwurst sandwich on (for real). No pretensions or attitude, just a basic bar that's been around forEVER. Clearly Joe Jost's is of the #1 description, but for being over 80 yrs old, not even all that well-worn. They definitely keep the historic space clean and well maintained. The bartenders are also friendlier, and actually come to work sober, shaved and showered, unlike many a dive bar I have been to. They also offer some of the best service of any bar, well staffed, and always checking up on you. Laura S and beau Nino and I decided to hook up here as neither of them had been before. Even though March Madness was in full bore on all of the TV's it wasn't as packed as I have witnessed in the past, we even scored prime stools at the bar. None of us was hungry enough for a Joes special sandwich even though I won one from the website, so something to look forward to next time. Joe Jost's is a Long Beach institution and has been around for nearly a century. It serves a vital function (historical and social), and is old enough to be a cultural landmark. Someone should write to the Department of the Interior and have this place designated as part of the national registry of historic places...alongside the White House. Though their web site tells you much of the back story of this place, once you enter through the very small doors on Anaheim Street, you'll immediately realize that they don't make places like this anymore. You tend see more of these kind of pubs over on the east coast, but to see one here in Southern California, where everything is about being new, exotic and hip, is rare. The service is very friendly and attentive. The bartenders are always checking up on you if you're at the bar. From the time I went a couple weeks ago, there didn't seem to be any table service for those sitting at the tables on the sides. I imagine that most of them just ordered at the bar and brought back their drinks to their party. I recommend sitting at the bar for that reason, primarily. In keeping up with their old-fashioned ways, they don't accept credit cards. Normally, that aspect prevents me from giving a perfect score, since people usually like to keep tabs open at bars, but the oldness and uniqueness of the place overrides that fact. Honestly, I would cash out a paycheck once in a while just so I have some cash on hand to dispose of here. Sure, they have an ATM in the pool room, but it charges an arm and a leg ($2.00 and $1.50 for a grand total of $3.50) to pull money. Believe me, I have personal experience with the damn machine there to know that first-hand. There are a number of TVs around the back and a couple up front, so if there's a game going on, you can catch it here. There's an interesting sign that prevents people under 21 from entering the pool room. The only thing is that you need to get through the bar to get to the pool room. That means that if you're under 21 and made it somehow past the bar, you can't go any further than the rear of the pub itself. Another twist, the bathrooms are located in the pool room. You'd have to just hold it in if you're a 20 year old, I suppose. As far as food and drinks go, go with schooners of any beer on tap and the Joe's Special. The beers and schooners are frozen constantly and the beer is at a nice, chilly 29 degrees Fahrenheit. The sandwich is cheap and good, and reminds me of a modified Polish dog. I also recommend getting a bag of peanuts just to munch on as you shoot the shit with the staff or friends. Parking to Joe Jost's is in the rear, or if you're lucky, right on Anaheim Street outside the place. A place where you can come and with only 10 bucks in your pocket you can enjoy a cold schooner of frigid cold Busch, a few pickled eggs and an order known as the "MESS!" The decor is as follows: Wooden booths with a hunting lodge motif with shuffle board and pool tables in the back area. The bartenders are very personable and always busy behind the bar. This is a place where people can come here after a long hard day at the steel factory and shoot the shit. This may be an old man dive bar but I think this female yelper has made her niche in this tiny tavern. Love Joe Jost's ! Used to go to their old location in years back. Their Pickled Eggs are great - tangy, smooth yolks, and are good with the salty Pretzels and Hot Yellow Peppers they serve them with. Prices are amazingly low ! Various beers on tap served by the schooner -- great and cheap ! Joe's "Special Sandwich" ( the most expensive thing on the menu and still very cheap ) is very straight forward, simple but good: Polish hot dog split served on fresh rye bread, wi mustard, pickle wedges and a slice of cheese. The atmosphere is like a saloon in the old west ( and was even more so with the huge antique "buffet / cabinet they had in the old location. ) Wooden booths and chairs fit right in. Prior to this review, I've discussed the idealities of locality and its connection to satisfaction. The character of any buisness can make the most seedy of bars seem almost ethereal in nature. Again, I express the same feeling for joe jost's. It's undeniable. If you've been raised in Long Beach, then you probably have some strange, yet astounding connection to this place; It's an establishment where many a citizen have experienced some "rite of passage" as they perused their city of origin as a young soul. Joe's may serve only beer, sandwiches, and hard-boiled eggs (which are amazingly neon green in color), but it's all just fabulous. I can't think of another place where I'd rather consume 32 gargantuan ounces of bitterly cold Pabst Blue Ribbon while discussing the trivialities of my employment. This is one place everyone should visit at least once! Joe Josts has been around more than 80 years. The place is usually crowded and it can be hard to find a seat at times. I like to sit at the bar and be entertained by everyone passing by and ordering drinks. The back room is a good place to check out if you never have been there. There are great photos of customers wearing their Joe Jost T-shirts from all over the world, very cool to look at. They have pool tables in the back room. Now for what to order! Follow these instructions and you WILL be happy... This is what a mouth party is all about. The Joe's Special, it's a polish sausage, slice of Swiss, mustard, pickle on a slice of rye bread folded in half. Made to order right in front of you! Next - get a pickled egg. This part took me many visits to finally try since I don't like pickled eggs. One egg and I was hooked. They soak the eggs in a pepper and vinegar solution. It is very mild. No pickled taste really. I was told by the bartender they sell 400 eggs a day. The eggs are served on a bed of pretzel sticks and garnished with chili peppers. And then... Peanuts. Order a bag of the peanuts. I've been told there is someone who sits in the back room and roasts the peanuts every weekday. I have yet to see this peanut roasting person. and last but not least... The beer. Order the Busch, a schooner of it. They used to offer Pabst Blue Ribbon (also took me several visits before I tried it) they stopped carrying it a while back and replaced it with the Busch. For some reason the Pabst and the Busch go perfect with the food. They boast the coldest beer and it is usually refrigerated around 29-30 degrees. Ice forms on the glass when it comes out of the tap. TIP: The way to order this all is simple. I always order two of each when with my wife so ask for: 2,2,and 2 and a bag of peanuts. or use ones or how ever many of each you want. It's that simple. The prices are very reasonable: Busch schooner $3.45 Joe's Special $2.95 Egg $1.15 (expect to order a second one) 1/2 lb peanuts $2.10 (more than enough for 2 people) One more thing- They only take Cash. I have been asking around about this place for a long time. I think knowing exactly what I was getting into, helped a lot. I was expecting a boring sandwich, made by the bartender, on a piece of wax paper....Thats what I got. The simplicity is what gives it so much charm. Not recommended if you want a filling meal. What can be said about Joe's that hasn't already been said? This is the most iconic bar I can think of, and after residing in Long Beach for 4 years, now I know why. So you know this place is old school, they have schooner beers, hot dogs on rye bread, pickled eggs, yada yada yada. We get it; it's the coolest bar in Long Beach by default. What you don't know about the place is how freakin' clean it is. I'm not kidding at all when I say the bathroom was cleaner than my own at home; it was spotless. I assumed Jost's would be a seedy dive bar that smelled like old beer and cigarettes, filled with scraggly longshoremen who just got off shift. On the contrary, it's as nice a bar as you're going to find; and they must have a team of cleaning people that come in the wee hours to spit shine the place to a brilliant finish. This is a sweet dive bar. Cheap beers and food with a fun crowd! I ordered the Joe's special sandwich consisting of rye bread, sausage and cheese which was pretty good! It paired well with my shock top. I tried my first pickled egg here. It was tangy and tasty with black peppered sprinkled on top. This place has 3 pool tables and 1 shuffle board. So here I am, packing stuff out of the apartment in LBC, and my guy wants to go to Joe Josts, since we were sweaty and thirsty for beer. I've been living in LBC since mid March. I've never been here before. I just did not know what this place was all about, but I am glad I got to know this place before packing up and taking off from LBC. Those pickled eggs were urr.. definitely something. I wish I could've taken some of them home if I wasn't emptying out my fridge. This is a Long Beach institution, & has been around since the 1920s. Did you know that at one point there were two locations of Joe Jost's? I think this is what got us started with the idea of going. During one of our Signal Hill hikes, 2 of the hikers were debating whether there were one or two locations of Joe Josts. So, a phone call was made to Joe Jost's while this debate was going on, & the answer was that there's currently only one location, but at one point, there were two. So, we ended up going here on a weeknight after hiking for our hiking group leader's birthday. The place is a dive, but kid friendly (did that make any sense?). When we got there, there were a few families in the backroom, which has shuffleboard & pool tables. The kids were playing pool. We ended claiming the table way in the back by the shuffleboard. Some of the booths in the front, especially the bigger one, look like they'd be fun to sit in with a large group. Foodwise, there's bags of roasted peanuts (just drop your shells on the ground), pickled eggs that come with pretzel sticks & peppers, Joe's special (all-beef Polish sausage on rye bread with Swiss cheese, a sliced dill pickle, and some mustard), & maybe a few other things. The Joe's special really hit the spot after our hike. Apparently they keep their beer cold at 29 degrees, & there's even a keg cam that shows you that. Beer is served in cold frosty mugs/schooners (small, medium, schooner). They have ginger "beer" for the non-beer drinkers like me. There's photos posted all over the walls of people around the country wearing Joe Jost T-shirts. The back room also has some heads (deer or other related animals) mounted on the wall. If I could give Joe Jost's 10 stars, I would in a heartbeat. As a kid my great uncle used to shine shoes out front and smoke cigarettes in the back. I've been going there since before I was 21, my dad used to take me, now I go on my own. Do yourself a favor and order some pickled eggs and a special. I miss the good ole Pabst on tap days, but they do have the coldest beer around, so that is always a plus. The guys that work here are great and if you go more then once, they remember who you are. After being a resident of Long Beach/Lakewood for over 55 years, he passed away right about 4 years ago after his 88th birthday after a very long and happy life. One of his favorite things was the pickled eggs from Joe Jost's. This place is like stepping back in time to 1935...where else can you get pickled eggs, a link on white bread, pretzels and an ice cool schooner of PBR with this kind of atmosphere. This is a Long Beach institution every resident should experience at least once. The surroundings are authentically real and you can just feel the experiences of simple people enjoying the simple pleasures of sharing a beer and good times with family and friends. Sort of obsessed with this place. Like really obsessed. Joe Jost's is a classic locals only hang out. Pretty sure it hasn't changed in 30 years. They keep it simple and it seriously works for them. Ton's of old guys at the bar. Great lunch time hang out on weekday or weekend, I think they close at 9 pm. If you go, don't be an as*hole. Order an ice cold beer (they don't have any IPA's on tap, don't ask), a Joe's Special, and an order of pickled eggs (they sound gross but are extremely bomb). I love it so much that I had my engagement party here in the back room. All you have to do to reserve a space is call a couple weeks ahead. Everyone said it was the funnest (I know this is not a word, thanks) engagement party they have ever been to! I heard this is the oldest dive bar in Long Beach. Looks like they only have beer here! No shots. No hard liquor. Isn't a good place for big crowds. It was pretty crowded when I came here. They have old school tables and lots of old pictures. There wasn't anymore seats when we came so we had to go in the back room which has pool tables. The restrooms are unisex .. (I think).. I went to one in the back and there was no sink to wash your hands! Then I went into another one and that one had a sink. I heard they were known for pickle eggs & hot dogs. The pickled egg tasted okay to me. It comes with pretzels and yellow chilies. The hot dog is actually called joe's special. They cut the hot dog in half n put it in rye bread with mustard. After deciding to take the day off, running 4 miles on the beach, walking the dog with my wife for another 4 miles, I was extremely dehydrated and craving a root beer and lunch. A brief Google suggested that Jost's had root beer on tap, as well as a limited but interesting sandwich selection. We went. We ordered sandwiches and root beer. My wife said "Hey, they have Shiner Bock on tap." I bought her a Shiner Bock. She drank her Shiner Bock in its frosted fortress-like glass, and I had a realization of my epic idiocy as I stared down at my child-mug of root beer. So I ordered a Red Hook. Here's the thing with Jost's: 1. The glasses are big. 2. The sandwiches are small. 3. The scene and history are great. 4.The place is filled with paramedics, fire fighters and policeman, so you feel safe, and, in the unlikely event of a polish sausage problem or cardiac arrest, you're covered. 5. Watching reruns on the couch and ignoring calls on a weekday afternoon is pretty fun, and if you have more than one beer at Jost's, that's what you're going to end up doing. read more

Places like Joe Jost's make me so incredibly happy and super thankful to be alive (and over 21). It's what can best be described as a "big small" place: a small bar area with large tables and that classic regulars-only divey kinda feel to it, and a rather large pool hall-type back area with a gorgeous array of photos old and new. You know you're stepping into legendary when you see Joe Jost's shirts from the world over -- the Great Wall, Macchu Picchu, the Tennessee Volunteers' home field, etc. -- on one wall, and the infamous calendar girls from back in the day on the opposite. So cool. They have a full-sized snooker table. Snooker! I still reel when I think of the serious steal I feel like I got away with: one spicy special, two regular specials, one egg salad, three hard boiled eggs and a handful of pretzels, two root beers and two schooners of their 'priciest' beer (at about $6... splurge!) = $30. This is the kind of place where everybody not only knows your name, but likely also every single skeleton in your closet. In a great way. Hubbie and I have developed a drinking game at Joe Jost's. We sit at the bar, listen to people order PBR and then listen to them exclaim "WHAT!? NO PBR?" Whoever predicts the total number of indignant proclamations for the night buys the beer (there is no way we could drink every time... it's continuous!) I love this place. I love the big ass schooners served at the perfect temperature, the old school wooden school chair, the killer bartenders that don't even hazard a glance at your rookie credit card sitting on the bar, the rubbery deviled eggs, the fact that they serve liverwurst sandwiches and hot dogs sliced down the middle (even though I can't stand liverwurst) and the fact that the bartenders play jokes on unsuspecting people. Most of all, I love the fact that they are Joe Jost and that they just make me feel all warm and fuzzy about Long Beach. Oh, but I digress. The reason they don't serve PBR anymore is that PBR allegedly pulled an elitist, "aren't-we-so-trendy-now" price hike on our beloved Joey- causing them to look for a new old flame. Offers a nice vibe and atmosphere. Has pool and shuffle board. Their simple deli sandwiches are actually very tasty, and you can pair it with chips. JoJo's is a very old bar that has been here for many many years. It just very busy on the weekends and seats are hard to find. But they do have their own private parking lot. They have a back room with a pool table and fresh roasted peanuts. This is very authentic place has been around for many years. They have TVs throughout to watch all of your sporting events. It is cash only so come prepared. It is counter service only. Sometimes you have to Elbow your way in to place your order kind of reminds me of being back in the East Coast in a New York Deli. They have pickled eggs that are great and polish sandwiches and salami sandwiches. And fresh pretzels. They only have beer and sodas. But the schooners are kept in a freezer and the beer is ice cold. There's nothing I love more than a bar with un-ironic taxidermy. The presence of an elk, moose or deer head--or even just a rack of antlers--is usually the sign of a totally unpretentious, down home drinking establishment, which Joe Jost's most certainly is. The place reminds me a lot of bars back home in Iowa. In fact, it is probably the clearest example of Long Beach being Iowa by the Sea that I've come across. But stuffed game aside, there really is a slight layer of slushy ice on top of a schooner just after its poured. I thought people were exaggerating about this before I tried it myself. Who gives a damn if the beer isn't PBR? Any malt beverage that cold, in that one of those awesome glasses, is a beautiful thing. I'll be back for more. read more

Joe Jost's is a simple place. In keeping with their long-established heritage, I shall do the same with the review. Joe Jost's is the following: 1. An All-American bar. 2. A Long Beach tradition. They are a family business since 1924, and currently owned and operated by Joe Jost's grandson, Ken Buck. 3. Joe's is not hip, swank, trendy, campy, ghetto, chic, or any other label that your hipster-ass wants to try and apply, other than it's a great place for the blue collar men and women of Long Beach to have a beer. 4.Does not have a juke box, nor need one. 5. Does not need to have wacky promotions, contests, or any other cater-to-the-flavor of-the-month trends. 6. They serve only beer and soft drinks. 7. If you're hungry, you can get a sausage, salami, liverwurst, cheese or hotdog sandwich or a pickled egg, peanuts or pretzels. 8. The televisions are stuck permanently on the sports channels, especially during Dodgers, Raiders, and Lakers games. Any attempts to prove the bartender wrong will result in your butt checking gravity through the front door by the patrons. Don't believe this? Get a friend to try it, and enjoy the show. 9. Any complaints about the lack of any beverages harder than beer will result in the speed of service being cut in half or more. 10. Joe Jost's is not dependent on, nor needs any hipster patronage, nor will they make any adjustments to attract the patronage thereof. Don't even ask. 11. The decorations are the real McCoy, and the result of being around for more than eighty years, and not the result of an interior designer scrounging around a thrift shop. This is Long Beach history. 12. There are no video games; just shuffleboard, pool and occasionally darts. 13. They serve the coldest beer around, and can prove it, at any given time 14. Helpful HInt: Do not order Guinness, unless you like your Guinness tasting like some kind of rotten citrus fruit. Ownership should definitely fix the problem with the Guinness, I don't know how they still allow it to be served and it's the most expensive beer they have. Bartender was nice enough to give me a free Schooner but do not be afraid to let them know the Guinness tastes like B@lls if you end up ordering it. But inexcusable that the owner's still allow sh#t beer to be served. Guinness is not the easiest beer to serve and they have long beer lines from the back that could account for the rotten taste. Luckily I didn't have any bowel problems from the Guinness. This place is pretty awesome, shuffleboard, pool tables and pretty good sandwiches and amazing pickled eggs. Without the beer problem this easily could be a 4 or 5 star place because it has a really chill atmosphere. read more

We stopped in here on the way home from the Long Beach Dragonboat Festival and it was fantastic. If you're a fan of pickled eggs and cheap beer, do yourself a favor and get that uber scheduled now. The pool hall in the back is for over 21 only but the front area is as kid friendly as an old school bar can be. I'll need to try a sandwich next time. You don't see liverwurst sandwiches on very many menus. You also don't see $3 sandwiches on very many menus. Will definitely be back for frosty schooners of ice cold beer. read more

Okay. Without any doubt this place is either a 1star or a 5star. If I was in the mood to binge drink a recent tragedy away with various alcoholics of ill repute then I would go here again. And when I say drink I mean drink beer...cuz there ain't nothin else to drink here. But, if you are looking to pick up a cute girl, or rub shoulders with the best and brightest Los Angeles has to offer, and have a dope cocktail then this isn't the place. Just plain brilliant, I tell you. Cold draught beer in icy goblets, fresh roasted peanuts, "special" grilled wieners on rye bread, and the most unbelievably good pickled eggs. Park it in one of their tiny booths up front, watch the game, order a goblet, and a "special", and a side of pickled eggs on the side. They will offer the eggs up in a paper tray, atop a bed of pretzels, and garnished with fresh ground pepper and a healthy helping of spicy wax peppers. Dropped in for lunch with friends when our daughter was just six months old (insert "good parenting" jab here), and the friendly staff offered up a Joe Jost's t-shirt (toddler size)! If you've never heard of this place, take a good look at their logo. You'll start seeing it everywhere you go. If you wear one of their shirts, and take a photo, you can send it to the bar, and you might just find it on the wall when you visit next. Since learning about this place, I've seen these shirts as far away as Yankee Stadium. It takes a special bar to create loyal fans like that! read more

When my coworker first suggested going here for a happy hour, I wasn't sure about the pace. I mean, seriously, this place was not in a good area of LB. But, hey, I love happy hours so I decided to go and give the place a try...and now I can say I love Joe Jost's! Service: The guys behind the bar are excellent! Very quick service and they're all very friendly. FYI, this is a cash only place. Ambience: Sort of like Cheers. It's a comfortable place to stop by after work to throw back a few schooners of beer with your coworkers and relax. A lot of the patrons here have been coming back for decades and bring their families here too (there's root beer for the kids). Food/drinks: My beer is served ice cold (so cold that sometimes there's some ice crust on the beer which I LOVE) and the Joe's special (rye bread folded over with a hot dog, cheese and a pickle)? You definitely need to try that. It's so simple yet so delicious. Get a bag of the roasted peanuts too and...if you're feeling adventurous (typically after a few beers), try the pickled eggs. I thought they were gross but I tried it and I love them! Bottom line: If you're looking for a Cheers like place to just relax, have a few beers, don't want to get dressed up for a lounge, and don't mind driving to a not-so-great area of LB, stop by Joe Jost's. read more
