Never been here before - or even heard of it but friends - IYKYK-recommended we meet here on our exploration of Long Beach. 100 yr bar vibe- busy during the day on a Saturday and many people chomping eggs, casual sandwiches and drinking beers of different colors. Eggs were good- especially with a pepper dropped in the bite. Had draft root beer that tasted great! Decor on the wall took you down memory lane with posters about the Grand Prix of Long Beach, multiple shirts over the years and stuffed animals. I lived in Long Beach all my life. First time in 48 years to come try this establishment out. I have been seeing shirts all over Southern California with the JoeJost Logo. So, I committed to trying it out for experience for the first time in my life. My wife accompanied me on Sunday 06.11.23 12pmsh. Walked in and got the vibe like I am at a Cheers bar (TV SHOW). No one sits you. You literally have to look for a table of your own. Self order from the bartender with no menu. Food and Drink Menu is located on a grimmy chalkboard. Ordered my food and found out that it was cash only. So I had to go use their ATM in the back with a fee. No signs were posted anywhere stating cash only. The positive, food, and drinks are affordable. It's not overpriced. The negative, the bartender at the time, was kind of rude with no greetings and no direction. His demeanor was kind of on the angry side. It's not a good impression for an establishment that's been in business since 1924. Overall, it's an older crowd. Place is just old school average. The bartender left a bad taste in my mouth. The tallest bartender out of the 3 needs to lighten up. The other 2 were friendly. Not to mention TVs are outdated, not a good place to watch sports. I would only recommend this place to get the old school vibe of Long Beach. Word of advice. First impressions is everything, especially if the establishment holds a Landmark of Long Beach History. Be nice and welcome people with good vibes. Everybody is wearing your shirts to market your bar, just saying. With all the hype and word of mouth that comes from this bar. What this is, is a joint. It's a friendly neighborhood bar. You could find similar hangs in Chicago, Pittsburgh, Kansas City, wherever. Every city needs a few of these. It's not a dive. There are true dives, where the roaches are as big as small cats, and there are pretend dives, where you need a password to enter and they sell Sazeracs in fancy glasses for $21. (By the way, I like both kinds of dives.) Your food choices are extremely limited but you didn't come for the food. The limited grub is just fine but that's not why you came. You also didn't come because you think the beer is amazing. They've got beer, in giant schooner glasses, but most of it is generic American swill with a couple of decent brews available. They also had two local brews on tap. You came because this place oozes character. It's comfortable and noisy and everyone seems to be having a good time. There is a lot of laughter and camaraderie. By the way, despite what you may think, the place is absolutely kid friendly. Kids are allowed in the front area but not in the pool hall in the rear. About that food: The "Joe's Special" is a sausage split in two with a pickle spear snuggled in the middle, with mustard and a slice of cheese, on rye. It looks like something a college kid slapped together after raiding the remains of his fridge. It doesn't look beautiful but it tastes pretty good. They serve hot dogs, again in that same rye bread. If they served tacos, I would expect the meat to be tucked into an upturned slice of rye, folded like a hard taco shell. The pickled eggs (hard boiled) over pretzel sticks and little yellow chili peppers with some hard shakes of pepper on top, are also pretty good. They are definitely tangy and somewhat bitter but not overly strong. They are definitely not for everyone but I liked them. I am not a root beer fan whatsoever but they have it on draft and it is pretty darn good, if you are a root beer fan. The fresh roasted peanuts are also very nice. CASH only, by the way. I've complained for years that Yelp should put some kind of symbol on the front page of a business when it's cash only but I'll be long dead and gone before that happens. This is a friendly neighborhood joint and it is a great one at that. Joe's is 99 years old this year. May it live for another 99 years. read more

So my son had talked up Joe's for a long time. So yesterday we came out with his friend that introduced him to Joe Jost's and everything they had said was absolutely true. Ice cold beer out of the glass goblets, delicious pickled eggs and of course the sandwiches. I had the Shiner Bock with half egg salad and half Joe's special. The half thing was because my son was willing to share so we could taste both. He went and purchased another egg salad. I wanted to go back out today and get another sandwich. On Aug. 10, the bar will celebrate 100 years in business. The bar has already sold over 10,000 tickets ($30/each) for its anniversary celebration, with proceeds going to fund scholarships to support amateur athletes. I assume that the place will be a madhouse (in a good way) on that day. Hungarian immigrant Joe Jost originally opened his business in 1920 on Main Street in Newport Beach. The business moved to Long Beach in 1924 as a combination barber shop that also offered billiards and poker. When prohibition was repealed in late 1933, the bar began serving beer along with Joe's Special Polish sausage sandwiches with a slice of Swiss cheese, a pickle and mustard on rye bread. They are known for their pickled eggs (love the salty pretzel sticks that come with!), Joes Special Sandwich and Ice Cold Beer. It's not a fancy joint but it's laid back and chill. I love it here. The spectrum of experiences you can have in a Long Beach bar is enormous, from the expensive tourist traps of Pine Avenue and 2nd Street, to the trendiest of new school venues on Retro Row and Bixby Knolls. Out of all those options, Joe Jost's is an icon. It's nothing fancy and that's the point. It's a beer so cheap you feel like you've travelled through time. It's pickled eggs and hot dogs that remind you of your grandparents. The staff is just so plain friendly and if you're lucky you can snag a pool cue and kill a few hours with your friends. Just stopped in for the St. Patrick's day corned beef special, which happens just once a year. Visit at least once. Or a lot if you aspire to be a true Long Beach bar fly. This menu item deserves is own paragraph, away from all the other words. It's the greatest, most Devine hard boiled egg to have ever been dropped in boiling water. Teamed up with the most perfect marinate in this planet, and I've I've been to 29 countries, and 49 states. ( Alaska.) Not an egg has been hatched and prepared by a single man that can top this delightful treat. When you combine all these elements together, the beer, the house special dog, and the eggs and pretzels, ( with the mustard or GFYS.) you've come to the pinnacle of life. Life after coming here, is just the credits. Ontop of all that. The prices are the best a place can offer. I honestly don't even know how they do it. A cowboy from 1943 could time travel here, and go to pay and wouldn't see any discrepancies Do yourself a favor, bring 60 bucks in cash, get you some pretzels with mustard, a couple of the eggs, and the house special. All washed down with 3 or 8 schooners of the lords coldest work... and watch your life instantly become what we were sold in the first place. I love this bar and I'll never stop coming. Had the classic Joe Jost's dogs with mustard on rye with pickle and rootbeer. My table partner added an order of pickled eggs on pretzels. Not my thing, but overall great, great experience. What a historical place! A Long Beach treasure. Recommend! Bar was packed with locals and out-of-towners - lots of sports on screens up above and a pool hall in the back for the over-21-crowd. I was introduced to Joe Jost's bar in 1976 when my supervisor and coworkers decided to go there after work. I was barely 21 and hadn't been to many bars. This place was amazing then with schooners of beer, hot dogs and pickled eggs. That was my first time trying a pickled egg and I was hooked. Over the years, I been back and introduced my wife to the place about 7 years ago. We went back this afternoon and nothing has changed but the prices and their selection of brews. It's a lively Long Beach neighborhood tavern but it attracts people from near and far. We drove 40 miles because we had a hankering for a Polish sausage sandwich, pretzels, pickled eggs and a cold beer. The prices are still fair and the place is still a treat for the taste buds and senses. It's still the same as it was in 1976. Pretty cool spot and a local favorite. As many times I have been in the LBC, I never had a chance to try this place out so finally glad I did. The beer is pretty cheap. We got a schooner for $7.25. Definitely not used to these prices but that's a plus. The food was pretty good too. We ordered the fan favorite, Joe's Special". Basically a polish dog with mustard, Swiss cheese, and a pickle, all on a rye bread. Pretty tasty!!! We also ordered a couple pickled eggs that came on a tray off pretzels and yellow peppers. You can soak the pepper with the excess salt which might not be healthy, but it's yummy. There is a lot of old pictures on the wall to see where customers have taken their iconic T-shirt to. The atmosphere was pretty cool and chill. We got to meet a local who has been going for the past 60 years and he still loves it.
