I love Kabayan Kusina. I anticipated it's opening, and when it did, I overindulged a little, and remained in a sleepy carb-filled bliss for an afternoon. My next visits were much more reasonably portioned. I missed great Filipino food, and this restaurant looks great, feels great, taste great, and treats it's guests great. The server who helped us remembered details we shared from previous visits, and it seems that they already have regulars. It's a smaller place, yet it's been packed during lunch. As for the food? I sent a pic to a friend who lives in the Philippines, and their response to the plating was, "Yum!" My favorite is the Chicken Adobo Lunch Special which comes with rice, noodles, and a lumpia. You'll need to watch out for bones in the adobo dish, yet it's yummy! Be sure to dip the rice in the adobo sauce. The noodles served are the Pancit Bihon which I could eat alone as a dish. The lumpia rolls are much longer and thinner than I'm familiar with, yet they were still yummy. On another trip, I did try the Chicken Afritada, yet it wasn't for me. I'm not a huge fan of tomato based dishes, so while it was good, the adobo is my fav. There are many more dishes to try, and based on what I've seen on other tables, I'm not as adventurous, yet I appreciate that delicious Filipino food is in the De Zavala area. read more

We came here last weekend and when we came in the aircon wasn't working thus why I only gave 3 stars and of course there are other reasons which I will elaborate in the next few sentences in this review . The sago at gulaman was good . Lumpia was also tasty and well seasoned. My husband ordered the sisig which he said was very average while I ordered the bangsilog which I missed and haven't eaten for the past 6 years . This was nothing extraordinary. They should step up a bit in their customer service because when we came in there was no hostess or anyone who directed us where to sit . We had to literally come up to the counter before we were entertained. My husband needed some things like seasonings , condiments . No one was there there and he had to be directed where to get them in this side table near the counter . I mean if this restaurant was more like a fastfood and self service , we understand but other people were being served properly while we felt like singled out and not given much attention . Iam Filipino and as much as I don't want to complain but at least we are also paying customers just like everyone else . I'm not coming back not unless customer service improves and of course the constant breakdown of their A/C unit . It's sad but it's suppose to be the nearest Filipino restaurant from where I lived but there are far more better restaurants that have very good food and better service . read more

i took my boyfriend here for his birthday, after looking for filipino restaurants near UTSA. my friend and her family also recommended it, saying it has bisayan flavors. kabayan kusina is new and in a convenient location since it's next to an H-E-B and t-mobile. firstly, the interior is small and very comfortable. we sat in a booth. this is a family business and you can tell they care a lot about their customers. the mom is very nice and always checked on us to make sure we liked everything, and so did the dad. my boyfriend got the pancit bihon, and i got the pancit palabok-- i would say to try pancit bihon if you've never tried filipino food. pancit palabok is unique and heavy on the gravy sauce, which has little flavor, while pancit bihon has more of a similar flavor to chinese- and thai-style noodles. the lumpia shanghai we got is basically like long egg rolls but they were way tastier and flavorful. everything was extremely delicious and fresh. it was also my first time drinking sago gulaman, which tastes like a banana drink with tiny tapioca pearls. it's now one of my favorite drinks. we would definitely come back! read more

My family and I (we are filipino) wanted to try this place out because we heard great things and we were not disappointed! First off the owner Sheryl was very friendly and accommodating to us because we had a large group and it was close to closing time but they still took us in. I was pleasantly surprised how authentic and delicious the food was. The gulaman drink tasted great to start off the dinner. We then ordered the lumpia, chicharon bulaklak, fish sinigang, sisig, tosilog and longsilog. We will definitely come back for this food, one of the best filipino restaurants in town. 10/10 recommend to try this place out! read more

Last night was a Satur-date with hubby and I mentioned that I was jonesing for a real authentic Filipino Food. We have been to few places but only experienced mediocre quality filipino dishes. So he said go to Yelp and see whats out there that we've not been to. I scrolled through Yelp for Filipino restaurants near us & found Kabayan Kusina Authentic Filipino cuisine. On the way there, I checked and went through their menu & we knew this was the place. We got seated right away & we put our order. For starters, hubby ordered lumpia (the best he & I had), fried squid chips with vinegar for dipping (hubby not a fan it was good though). For the main course, we had Crispy pork belly, fried bangus fish, jasmine rice & for drinks, sago gulaman (similar to boba drink) for me & soda for him. No alcohol served. I knew we found our place for Filipino restaurant. Why I say that? From the moment we arrived, the staff were friendly, welcoming & accomodating. The ambiance was truly a traditional filipino restaurant. The food was outstanding! The best we've had anywhere. Overall, my husband and I had an excellent dinner experience! I have been to Kabayan Kusina several times (solo and with friends) since it opened a couple of weeks ago and each time I left with a happy heart and a happy tummy. The owner, Sheryl, and her staff are so welcoming you feel at home quite easily. The food is yummy; you can tell it's prepared with care and attention to detail. Shout out to the masters of the kitchen, Arnel and Kyo, who consistently produce cuisine that keeps me coming back. My favorites (so far) are the Tortang Talong, Ampalaya con Carne and their specialty, the Sinuglaw. I'm positive that list will grow with many future visits. P.S. Their fruit salad (available on weekends only) is the absolute best! It's made with fresh fruit (not canned fruit cocktail as is commonly used) embedded in a heavenly blend of Nestle cream, condensed milk and a secret ingredient that gives it just the right degree of sweetness. The best authentic filipino in san antonio!!!! crispy pork belly (5/5) : so crunchy and juicy tender!! The flavor was amazing and the amount of meat they give you is alottt. Its wayyyy better than any other popular filipino restaurants around SA I promise. Pancit bihon (5/5): great flavors , noodles were cooked well and chicken was not dry. Lumpia (5/5) : the size of the lumpia was so big ! It tastes so good, a must appetizer. Will be coming back to try more :) everyone was so nice. read more

It was great to see a Filipino restaurant near my hotel. For all these years that I've travelled for work, this is the very first Filipino food that I decided to buy for dinner. I decided to buy the go to chicken adobo. And it was delicious and generous in portion! The restaurant folks were super friendly. I highly recommend this place. Went on the weekend and ordered the breakfast and specifically indicated just plain rice. Kind of surprised my table was served the incorrect order and the dish had fried rice. Finally my order came and to no avail it also had fried rice. I told the sever I can't eat garlic but still aggressively argued that she can't bring the dish back anymore and will just bring another plate with white rice. My issue with that is I can't stand the smell of raw garlic. It would literally make me sick if I get a whiff of it. That's why we request these kind of things for a reason. And they also for for the egg that came with the breakfast meal... I was also noticing another table being neglected and I really feel bad for those two ladies trying to get someone's attention.. I'm not sure if the place is still going through the opening phase but it is pretty obvious the staff is still figuring things out or need reminding of customer service. This was simply great food that hit all the right tastes. It was bright and fresh and the service was excellent. We had the lumpia and pancit and a sour tasty soup full of pork and veggies. Flavorful food is definitely a top priority at this restaurant. You can tell the chef cares about the quality of the dishes they are serving. We ordered lumpia, pork skewers, crispy belly roll, pork adobo, pancit, garlic rice. Everything was flavored to perfection and the portions were plenty. The waitresses took great care of us and they were so friendly. We will be back!!! The server was kind and kept our drinks full. Inside dinning had plenty of large wooden booths for larger parties. The menu itself is expansive and service was quick enough. I ordered the puffy taco plate. The portion was generous but you could taste the industrial "taco seasoning" in the meat. The rice wasn't bad but the charro beans were flavorless, straight from a can but it seemed like the menu lacked focus as it tries too hard to offer "something for everyone ". It did look like a nice place to sit and have a few drinks, but the food leaves a lot to be desired. I'll probably give it another shot, but maybe not.

A few weekends ago, my fiancé and I decided to visit Kabayan Kusina for brunch. As someone from Manila, he was eager to experience dishes that reminded him of local flavors. The location was convenient, and the restaurant offered ample seating, making it a comfortable spot for lunchtime patrons. Our experience was outstanding. We ordered the chicken adobo, lumpia, BBQ pork appetizers, and chicken pancit. The variety of dishes provided a delightful mix of traditional favorites and unique flavors, each cooked to perfection and bursting with authenticity. While the food was delicious, I did notice that the prices for appetizers were on the higher side. Given the current economic challenges, I tend to prefer dining at home, but the flavors and quality here made the experience worthwhile. The customer service was equally commendable. The staff was warm, attentive, and proactive in ensuring we had an excellent dining experience. I moved to San Antonio 13 years ago from the upper desert of California. I had no idea there was such a thing like Filipino food and culture. I heard about this restaurant from a local news show and I was hooked. First of all, when I walked into the place the employees all said hello. I am disabled and have a hard time walking and helped me to my seat. I asked them if I could order to go and they said sure. I gave them my order after they helped explained to me the menu. Then they asked me if I wanted a glass of water or a drink while I waited. When the food was ready to go , they brought it to my table and helped me out with it. The place was very clean. Owned by a family of beautiful people. This is my new favorite place and will come back over and over again. I would recommend this place to everybody. I just wish they had a delivery system. The decorations are really cute, and the Tagalog music playing in the background made me feel like I was transported straight to the Philippines. For a restaurant, in fact, any restaurant to start 2 months and deliver the quality of food, ambince, and family feel is a huge impact for San Antonio. Every restaurant in De Zavala will be busy due to school, off time classes at UTSA, and everyone goes to HEB in the area. However, my most recent encounter has soured me completely, and I think I will never return. My favorite dish here was something that did not appear on the menu, Bo Tai Chanh salad. Even though it was not listed, they would whip it up at my request. It consists of beef cappaccio on an iceberg lettuce salad with Vietnamese vegetables and a fish sauce based dressing. Tonight they refused my order. What makes this refusal all the more frustrating is that Pho Bo Tai Chanh (the soup version) is listed on the menu and promoted as one of the favorite dishes. All that was needed, to meet my request, was to cut up half a head of lettuce and throw the non-liquid ingredients of the soup on top. Every restaurant should remember the customer is always right. Their only purpose is to meet their customers' requests to the best of their ability. I understand when a kitchen cannot meet requests with the ingredients or equipment they have. For example, I always call 24 hours ahead to order Peking Duck because the traditional methods require that amount of time to prepare the dish. Or I remember being refused a request to have my meat served rare when the restaurant had already cooked all its meat to medium rare using sous vide. I don't expect the kitchen to do the impossible. But every kitchen must be ready to meet special request whether health related like peanuts, shrimp, gluten, salt, carbohydrates, etc. or relate to tastes or ethics like vegetarian, vegans, seafood, etc. To fail one's customers is the first step to being one of the numerous restaurants to fail and become irrelevant. Any restaurant that refuses to meet reasonable requests fails the fundamental test for good service and does not deserve to be patronized. P.S. I end up going down the road to Yaya's Thai Restaurant (another local restaurant) to get something that met my tastes and preferences.
