Look, it's Luby's. Most dishes under seasoned, many have been sitting on steam tray for a while, basically a buffet served to you. But kind of a tradition to locals. There are better options elsewhere for what they serve, but if your family has been going there for decades that makes it an option (grandma and grandpa liked it!). It was Valentine's Day and we didn't make a reservation anywhere. We went to Lubys to get some comfort food. The line went by fast and we chose our meals. I decided on the Luann with chicken fried steak. I also got mashed potatoes and green beans for the sides. I had to try one of their dinner rolls to complete the meal. We found our seat and were greeted by one of the sweetest waitresses we have ever had. She regularly came over and filled up our drinks. The meal was very good. Waitress only came by when we were almost finished with our meal but she was semi-friendly. Had chicken fried steak--it was Super crunchy and over fried but not chewy inside which is what really matters! Well seasoned and white gravy complimented it well. Green beans were very bland which is unusual because I always get them because I always love them so disappointing today. Yams had no marshmallows so that was off as well but still sweet and nutty with pecan bits. I never come to Lubys but my mother takes my daughter all the time. Well I finally took my daughter since we wanted fish for Friday. She walked me through how everything worked and service was great though the line, the cashier was very sweet. I wish I got her name but all the workers were very welcoming, engaged in conversation and extremely helpful. If you are wanting something that gives you a home cooked meal I suggest Luby's. Can I just say I died and went to Heaven! I literally thought all the Lubys were closed down. I was just in far west S.A. and my eyes stumbled upon a Luby's sign. I thought to myself I'm sure that's an abandoned building, but my curiosity got the best of me as I circled my way around to check it out. To my surprise, it was 1 of the 5 remaining Lubys. I came here recently with my wife and her parents. We decided to celebrate Father's Day a day early to avoid crowds. I hadn't been to Luby's in some time, so it was nice to revisit an old favorite from my youth. I decided on the Luann platter with roasted turkey as the entree. My two sides were corn and cabbage. I picked the jalapeño cornbread to complete my meal. I passed on the stuffing as I was trying to avoid too many carbs. I really enjoyed everything about the meal! It felt like Thanksgiving in June. The turkey was nice and moist, and the cornbread actually had some spice to it. The plate had the right amount of food. All in all, it was a good and inexpensive experience. Before beginning this trip for a birthday dinner, I checked the Luby's website AND called their phone (210) 695-4494 to verify that they were indeed open. Both the website AND automated answering system specifically said that they would be open until 8 pm on December 24. So you know, December 24 is my now 79 y.o. Step-father's birthday. I drove from Lytle TX to La Coste TX to pick him and my 80 y.o. mother up from assisted living. We then drove the 28 miles to Luby's. We pulled up at 5:05 pm. Paper sign taped to the door says they closed at 5:00 pm. Banged on the door. A very nice young man Terrance came and answered my insistent banging on the door. Terrance got an earful. I know it wasn't his fault ... but I strongly urged that he pass the level of my severe displeasure to his manager. I don't have any problem with closing early so your employees can spend time with family. But when you're too damned lazy to change your website AND your automated answering system AND I made a 65 mile round trip for nothing ... I have a damned problem!!! read more

Great concept, who know what went wrong. Medical Center location is fine but could use a good cleaning. Food seems fresh as always and no one got sick from eating there. A++ Servers were nice and efficient as always. I have dined at Luby's since 1977, I wish they would remodel, cleanup and get the momentum going again. There's no reason that they shouldn't be packed..... especially in San Antonio YOU DID NOT MISS THE MARK...... Maybe a little TLC to the Locations.... I knew better but... I ordered to go from Luby's on Bandera and 1604. Where to start? Shrinkflation has the fried fish so thin and small now, like a Luann portion but not halved. In one photo you can see that it's a little hollow! Same great taste, but it will leave you wanting more... like a full portion. The cabbage was still a bit raw but also overcooked, they still keep the broccoli in huge tree sizes, but it was good. The jalapeño cornbread had to be from last week. In the pic you can see the delineation from soft to rock hard. The tartar sauce was still good, but overall, a very disappointing meal. If this quality and the prices don't improve, I'm afraid Luby's will fade away as another great San Antonio dining experience that dies a slow and excruciating death. read more

I was sitting in a Luby's eating lunch one day when five managers come walking into Luby's. That was the worst day ever for the Luby's Franchise. There was a change going on in the company that day. The Regional Mgr was showing the lower Mgr's the changes they were making. And changes for the worst Did happen! First they hired waitresses instead of the ladies that would just check on you. Tips was the new plan, lower the wages and let the customers pay more. I mentioned that to the manager and his response was, "well. You don't have to tip them you know". No concern for their employees. The huge beef roast that they cooked was replaced with a much cheaper drier less tasty meat. (I ate that every trip there.) I was in the habit of going at least once a week usually meeting my friends. They lost our business. I miss the old Luby's, modern changes (for the worst) are not for me. I wonder if they reduced the wages of the CEO & other upper management. Probably not. read more

I confess that until just 2 weeks ago, I've never once been to a Luby's. Back in Houston where I used to live, a lot of people depict it negatively and I had no interest in trying it. But when my boyfriend's coworker told us we HAD to try their all-you-can-eat breakfast, I didn't know that it would also be a life-changing experience. IT WAS GREAT! It was a little confusing for us at first. We walked in, there was no greeting or looks our way, and no employees in sight. We had no idea what to do but got a plate and followed everyone else. After piling up plates of food, we finally saw cashiers at the end of the the line. The all-you-can-eat breakfast is $8 and juices are not included. Despite the rocky beginning, the staff there is oh so sweet! All of the ladies there were friendly, smiley, and really brightened our day. All of the food items were fresh and delicious! We didn't come in with high expectations but they really did leave a big impression. They have everything from different styles of scrambled eggs, to bacon, sausage, potatoes, pancakes, waffles, chickens and waffles, biscuits, rice, and much much more. When we left that morning, my boyfriend and I looked at each other with our food coma eyes and said "Let's come back every Sunday". And honestly you should too! read more

This location used to be our go to location for our Luby's fix. The food is still good but the service is the worst. And its been that way for the last few years now. We recently went in for dinner, it was about 15 mins to close, but noticed that there were still customers eating in the restaurant. And like we ALWAYS do, we always ask the staff if we are good to dine in and if not, we'll take the order to go. They assured us that we were good and we got our food and headed to the cashier. We finally sat down about 5 mins later. At about 8:05 our server came over and told us that they were closed and that we have to leave. She then offered to box up our dinner in order to rush us out. I told her that I asked them when we came in if it was ok for us to order food and EAT our meal there. She then told us that they've already locked the doors and that they were getting ready to shut off the lights! At this point, my 90 year old mom started to become uncomfortable and let me know that she just wanted to leave and didn't even want to take her food home and we were not even half way thru our dinner. Now I get that it was closing time, but I also worked my way thru college as a server, bartender and bell man and I've always known that when a customer are spending money at your establishment, we were going to stay until they were done dining, drinking or whatever regardless of what time it was. Now I would have just written this off as a one time thing, but not only do we eat at this Lubys quite frequently, but I had just ordered BOTH my Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners from these guys at nearly $200 a pop! We are so disappointed with this place. And it's sad to see a Texas tradition like Luby's become just another bad restaurant. I ordered from the 1604 location after having a fantastic lunch from the Floyd Curl location. Unfortunately, this didn't rate well with me. The cabbage was bland, no tomatoes and the stalk from the middle was cooked and in my portion ....it was hard and should not have been in there. The cornbread was also very dry. Yes, yours truly -- gastronome extraordinaire, epicure, bon vivant, and overall pretentious bastard -- is awarding a five-star review to Luby's, a Texas-based cafeteria chain whose biggest claims to fame are, in no particular order, a "King of the Hill" cartoon character named after its iconic LuAnn Platter, macaroni and cheese, and a square fish filet. "How can this be?," you ask? "Isn't Luby's one small step up from nursing home fare?" Although the appeal (an amalgam of nostalgia and a menu guaranteed to not offend culinary milquetoasts) skews towards an older demographic, the answer to your question, dear reader, is a resounding "No!" If the location at 1604 and Bandera Road is indicative of the Luby's brand as a whole, then this humble (and financially struggling) little cafeteria chain deserves far better than its reputation suggests. Over the course of several drive-thru visits amidst the statewide lockdown, I have sampled some of the most scrumptious, crave-worthy comfort foods in all of San Antonio. An indelible, intrinsic aspect of the overall Luby's experience is the slow walk down the cafeteria line. It's the unique appeal of intermingling aromas (fried chicken, skillet-fried cabbage, the hearth of fresh-baked yeast rolls), and the familial one-on-one interactions with portly, hair-netted cafeteria ladies. In the era of COVID-19, alas, that experience has been jettisoned, albeit temporarily, in favor of impersonal drive-thru sterility (in both senses of the term). I cannot fault Luby's for this regrettable, draconian (there I go with that word again!) response to a virus with a death toll of approximately 0.00004% of the Texas population, but I pine for the days of yore, an era where I felt an inexplicable urge to add a bowl of cubed green Jell-O to my tray as I approached the cashier. Ordering take-out from Luby's is like celebrating your grandma's 100th birthday via Skype; it's just not the same experience. Nevertheless, I commend the hardworking ladies manning ("womanning"?) the drive-thru for their accuracy and convivial attitudes (e.g., "Thanks for stoppin' by, hun!"). The protein-centric entrees (this *is* Texas, remember?) have been unfailingly excellent. Highlights include a generous portion of calf's liver (tender on the inside, crispy on the outside) and a Texas-sized chicken-fried steak made with what tasted like a well-marbled ribeye. To my surprise, the fried chicken combo survived the ten-minute drive home, retaining its heat and crispiness. The latter characteristic is important, for the "music of mastication" is an intrinsic component of the fried chicken triad (the other two components being olfactory and gustatory stimulation). In other words, the chicken smelled and sounded as good as it tasted. The pieces were undoubtedly fried to order, as evidenced by the crispy exterior and juicy interior. I recently lamented the sharp decline in quality I witnessed at Earl Abel's -- another iconic restaurant whose specialty (fried chicken) was once legendary -- so I am thrilled to have found my new go-to place for fried chicken. Sides of skillet-fried cabbage, mashed potatoes, and macaroni and cheese have been uniformly excellent as well. The skin-on mashed potatoes (not "mashers," for hipster foodie lingo has no place at Luby's) tasted homemade (no graininess), as did the excellent bacon-accented cabbage, the wilted edges of which bore traces of caramelization from the skillet. No visit to Luby's, of course, would be complete without a side of creamy macaroni and cheese, the enduring, multigenerational favorite so beloved by Texans that HEB now carries a frozen variation of it. Whatever you do, save room for a decadent slice of chocolate cake or chocolate icebox pie. The former was nothing fancy -- just a moist cake made with plenty of high-quality cocoa and a velvety dark chocolate ganache -- yet I found myself craving seconds and thirds. Pro tip: always order at least one extra slice of *something* to go. Even better was the huge slab of chocolate icebox pie, a classic recipe made with real whipped cream (hold the carcinogenic polysorbate 60 and sodium polyphosphate, please!) and a silky chocolate center with a taste and mouthfeel more akin to custard than pudding. I have more to say about Luby's, including its fall from grace in the late 90s (when standards began to slip) and how its current owners, the Pappas brothers, have restored the brand to its former glory, but my review has once again surpassed Yelp's arbitrary character limit. The bottom line: we cannot let a Texas institution like Luby's fall by the wayside. I am indeed a nitpicky Nazi bastard with unwavering culinary standards, so believe me when I say that Luby's (or at this particular location) is worthy of your patronage. read more

I have found that the food at Luby's is always hot and fresh. Over the years of my life. I have had the opportunity to dine at many cafeteria restaurants in the state. Luby's stands out as the best in Texas, in my opinion. The entrée selections has always been prepared to satisfaction. The vegetables are the freshest available. I've made statements that the veggies are so fresh. They were sleeping in the fields the night before. Service is prompt. The servers always wear hair nets and neoprene gloves. I totally enjoy frequently visiting Luby's. It has always been a favorite of my family and myself. read more

My husband was trying to brighten an otherwise trying day for me so he took me to Luby's so I could have a plate of Liver and Onions, now those of you out there like my husband who's noses are scrunched up this is one of my childhood memories and that day I needed it. Luby's on Bandera and 1604 in Helotes is still open and he went through the drive through because I couldn't get walk that day. Luby's is always Luby's there is not a lot to tell you except thanks to my wonderful husband who spends his days and night making sure I am ok.
