When I searched for spots close to our hotel to try out Modica was high on the list. They have Italian food, sandwiches, wine and coffee with indoor and outdoor dining options and are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Since it was our first time there, we wandered in and the staff greeted us right away. When we mentioned wanting to dine in they offered us seats inside or outside. We opted for a table outside and one of us ordered a coffee while the rest of us had wine. We ordered the East Coast Hoagie to check out their sandwiches and enjoyed some time catching up and people watching. Our server was attentive and made sure our waters were full. We ended up getting two half bottles of their Murphy Goode Sauvignon Blanc since they were out of full bottles and they were so cute and not a bad price. Visited this place after picking up my running bib for the Long Beach Marathon. From the initial look, this place may not look like a place that could whip up a tasty Italian dish but you would be wrong I had the Chicken Bowtie Pasta and my friend had the lasagna + meat. The prices were pretty good for the portion that was provided! Majority of the pastas were $14.95 and came with a small side salad and practically a foot long of garlic bread. The chicken pasta was light and the lasagna was full of flavor. We may or may not have used the garlic bread to soak up the sauce but the garlic bread was good just by itself! I will have to come back to order one of their sandwiches as I head around 5 people in a matter of a few minutes order either the Pastrami or the chicken parmasean sandwich! It was pretty hot inside, but the view of the beach along with the beach breeze made it great! Parking can be tough as it is street parking and is metered. If you are at the Long Beach Convention Center, it is only about a 5 minute walk up to the restaurant! read more

Service is impeccable. It's better than restaurants in Venice. The staff is so friendly and accommodating. It was a cold winter day in the middle of March and we didn't have to ask for an extra heater. Staff just immediately brought another one out for us and made sure we were well taken care of. A group of three couples, we each ordered a pasta dish and a pastrami sandwich and wow do those go well together! I got a half order of pesto with a 16 inch pastrami. We def had more than enough food but really everything tasted so fresh and yummy. The pastrami wasn't too oily and they really packed the meat into the sandwich. We forgot to get cheese but we will save that for next time. The pesto pasta tasted so fresh and the sauce was honestly -- I couldn't stop eating it, I even dipped my pastrami into the pasta sauce. I highly recommend this place. It's so cute and a very good ambiance and vibe. The staff is so nice and they make sure you're taken care of. Their desserts (affogato and tiramisu) are delicious! The tiramisu is super wet just the way I like it and affogato was such a perfectly sweet balance of espresso and ice cream. They have wonderful outside seating, the weather was perfect but I do recommend a coat just in case it gets a little breezy. If you had to pick one item to represent the quality of this place what would it be. She said the pastrami sandwich. 10/10. The freshly made bread on the inside soaks up the grease of the pastrami, the mustard and pickles while the outside stays crispy and delicious. A lot of flavour here. We also got the east coast hoagie which was really good as well. Again great bread, a generous amount of meat, and the ratio of oil and vinegar was perfect. We came here for lunch on a Saturday. At the time there wasn't a crowd but right after we ordered a line started to form. We got the Saturday special which was a ham and cheese w/chips and fountain drink. The sandwhich was ok. The bread was slightly toasted which made it really good! Crunchy on the outside and soft in the middle! We also got a Pastrami sandwhich which was pretty good. The bread was also toasted and soft on the inside. It had a great amount of mustard and pickles inside to balance out the pastrami. Lastly, we got the French dip. The French dip was loaded with meat! The Au jus sauce was pretty flavorful. Overall it was pretty good. Would I come back, probably not, I'd try other places. One thing is, I wish the meats were hotter, like, temperature hotter. This was a great stop on my weekend in Long beach for the marathon. I had a plan. Carb up at lunch. Did just that with the spaghetti and sausage hit the spot. It could of had a little more flavor but it was good. The garlic bread same. Wasn't bold enough for me and my liking of garlic bread. I ordered a sandwich to go for dinner, more carbs. Did I say I ran the marathon. Lol. The sandwich to me was delicious. But the star was the bread. Soft and tender. If I eat shit bread it hurts my hips. Long story. This didn't have shit ingredients. That's a plus. And I ate the sandwich about four hours later. Th coffee was equally good. Would I come back? Yes, I would. I'd even order the same thing. I had it delivered and left a few notes (modification requests: add salt, pepper and red onion, don't over do it with the mustard, no vinegar, no oil) because DoorDash didn't give many options to customize the sandwich and the store accommodated me... not the store's issue... but I wish you had the option to choose a different bread when placing a delivery order. I got the Italian sub... it was pretty good... everything tasted fresh... nothing really special about it... but good enough that it's a place I will be frequenting to try other things... I came across Modica's while on Ocean in downtown Long Beach as they were getting into the Halloween spirit that influenced me to give the place a try. It is a cozy corner restaurant that accommodates both indoor and outdoor dining. I am not sure if they have table service at night, but I ordered and paid at the inside counter during a late lunch hour from their extensive huge posted menu. Modica's has an eclectic menu that includes various deli sandwiches but also tends to skew Italian. I ordered their chicken bowtie pasta in a creamy red wine sauce which was absolutely delicious. It came with a side salad which balanced the meal well. Service was adequate for a place where you order at a counter and they fairly quickly deliver the food to your table. Prices were reasonable. Parking is metered and non-metered street parking. The food here is very good and I am anxious to try their desserts on my next visit. Modica's is certainly worth a try for a quick but well prepared meal if you live or are near downtown Long Beach. read more

I was able to check out Modica tonight after my other half was feeling like Italian food. Parking was pretty easy at some metered spots that were not active right around the corner. I ended up getting the special to go - it was $13 for spaghetti and meat sauce, a side salad, garlic bread, and a drink. My partner got the chicken parmigiana and we got a slice of the chocolate cake. The salad was great - a simple spring mix with some baby spinach and parmesan cheese, served with a side of olive oil and balsamic vinegar. This was fresh and well-dressed. The spaghetti was a massive portion and so good! It came out piping hot and the meat sauce topped with parmesan cheese was tasty. The garlic bread was also plentiful and was packaged in separate paper, as not to get soggy. The chocolate cake at the end was so decadent and the perfect way to finish off the meal. I wasn't able to finish all the pasta and the bread - that will be my next day lunch! Portions are generous and the team is efficient and polite. I had the pleasure of meeting the owner, Orsa, on her way out - she is such a sweet person! I'm looking forward to coming back! read more

Pretty solid place! My friend was telling about this place and how great it was! Ok so i decide to go after work. He was impressed with the pastrami sandwich so that's what i decided to get. I actually got a WHOLE one which was so big that it's basically two sandwiches you could easily share with a friend and go halves. It was very tasty and PACKED with pastrami. They had TONS of options in the windows from fresh salads, fruit, mac salads, asparagus, cannoli, roasted potatoes and the list goes on. They have a very nice outside patio and seating inside with TV's. It's a big place! Next i want to try the roast beef or the lasagna and for sure some of the desserts. It's a good place to meet friends for lunch or to bring a date. The only downfall is it's hard to find parking in the area sometimes but overall a good downtown option for food. read more
