Overall I think this restaurant has some areas of improvement for me to feel the price matches the quality. Highlights: good atmosphere, cool looking restaurant, tostada chips & salsa were good. Bone marrow was very rich & delicious. Improvements: The evening started with a table 6 that had the evening sun hitting on the face of the head of the table. They knew it wasn't a good seat as soon as we sat down and immediately offered to move us - just poor table placement. The table we moved to was a very large round table, so big we couldn't easily share appetizers without standing up to pass/reach dishes, and it also strained any conversation we might have had together. Secondly, the music playing would be great for a family bar-like environment, maybe an Applebees. But this is a high end Mexican-inspired restaurant. If you insist on radio-hits music, maybe play some Mexican pop to at least get the vibe right - Mon Laferte, Natalia Lafourcade, Mana, Zoe, Julieta Vinegas...... just to name a few in hopes someone reads this. The food had some issues. First off, I can listen to the Trolls soundtrack playing overhead, but I can't get my 6 year old a kids meal even though they offer things like cheeseburgers, Mac n cheese, and Alfredo pasta for the "adult children" who come in. In addition, not all ingredients are listed on the menu, so when I got my son the $26 adult cheese burger where we specified meat and cheese only, and the waiter confirmed 4 times meat and cheese only, I was a bit miffed when it came back smothered in spicy mustard. The waiter did try to fix it but the replacement burger never arrived and I was told the kitchen was "too busy serving other people" that it would be even longer. Mind you, the rest of us were pretty well done eating before I was told this. Even the waiter knew it was excessive and said "you'd like me to just cancel it, don't you." By all means yes, cancel the burger since you're also in the process of getting our table to-go boxes. I had high hopes for the picanha tacos but the meat was so tough I struggled to tear it with my teeth. The bone marrow was on point! On the other hand the barbacoa was tender. The downside was it was incredibly fatty, which is just not indicative of authentic barbacoa. At the end of the day there was a lot of the menu I did not get to try & I blame most of my experience on service, whether it was table seating, food quality, communication between wait staff & kitchen staff, and so on. I ultimately would like to try more, but $400 is a bit much for trial & error experiences. I think if the restaurant can get a bit tighter with service alone, I could see coming back here again, but for now will sit back & watch for a bit. read more

OMG, blows expectations away if you had any. A must go to! Had the pork ribs, costillas, and Mary's chicken. Both had amazing presentation and were very good but the ribs were out of this world. The atmosphere is amazing, what a build out. And. Christian did an amazing job, the customer service was perfect. Might add a more traditional app or two...and wait to box one persons plate while the other is still eating...just a more formal point on the second for a nicer place. Let's start with the positive... Our server was fantastic, the decor and vibe is awesome and the appetizers were great. Now the negative...Very over priced for the quality of food served. Most dishes are $50 and they are supposed to specialize in steak HOWEVER they are serving the worst and probably the cheapest cuts they can get. Then they slice it thin (my guess) to make it less obvious. All 4 of our entrees had steak and all 4 were thin strips of fat and hard gristle. Honestly not one good piece in the dish. My husband and I went with friends last weekend. We have been nervous to try it as they have had many hiccups since being open but we figured it's been a few months, why not. The restaurant itself is beautiful. The lighting, the table set up, beautiful. The bar is very nice as well. Our server was very attentive and informative. They had a glass of red wine that was poured as a mistake for another table and she gave it to me complimentary which I thought was very nice. For the cost I was expecting Mastro's / Bourbon & Bones level of food but it just wasn't there. My ribeye was $68 and it came out undercooked. I ordered a medium and it was more rare/med rare. It also was not hot when initially brought out. The complimentary tostadas n sauces were very good. My husband enjoyed his pork dish. He originally ordered the filet but they were out of them. A Saturday at 6p and they were out of Filets. Also note that these meals do not come with any sides. That is all ala carte. Overall I feel like they still have A LOT to work on. I can't say I will be back for dinner as their prices do not match the food quality but I can see myself returning for happy hour at the bar. read more

Hi I been to ORIGEN in different occasions and it never disappoints, I can say that there is no other restaurant in Arizona with the proposal ORIGEN has... in my different visits it has never disappoint from. The guacamole either with pork belly or rib eye chicharrón, the ceviche peruano, the grilled octopus, the chicken plate they offered it's a beauty, the barbacoa from northeast Mexico, the skirt steak, the rib eye, the New York, the filet al trapo, the flan, and so on... the food is amazing, now let's talk about the restaurant itself, what other location in Gilbert has splurge in its location like them?... no one... but if you don't believe me Or the pictures I attach, make a reservation, give it a try... and talk to them they are open to hear you and do better..: long live ORIGEN!! read more

I hate to do this but, after my experience tonight at Origen, I feel a need to post this, even if it's so the restaurant makes the necessary changes. I'll preface this by saying that I ate here four months ago and had a great experience. However, that wasn't the case tonight. Both times, I've ordered the 16 Oz ribeye. It's around $60. Tonight, I requested that it be cooked medium rare. Within about 15-20 minutes, the food was brought out and I thought, man, that was fast. When I cut into my steak, it was rare. I've eaten rare before and I thought, well, if it tastes good, no big deal. Nope. No taste at all. A hint of salt but that's it. As I cut deeper into my steak, it was less than rare. It was nearly cooked blue. It wasn't my food either. My wife's steak Alfredo was also under cooked. Now, here's the kicker. There was no spinalis on the ribeye. It was like they cut it off or something. It was a large eye. Not making this up. I didn't send it back. My wife and I told the waiter that something urgent came up, they boxed it up, we paid, and we left. When I got home, I was starving. I microwaved the Steak for a minute and it was almost medium rare. I microwaved it for another minute, and it came out medium. I let it cool, took a bite, spit it out, cut the $60 steak into small pieces and gave it to my dog. This was just the steak. The drink I ordered came out after I paid. Also, please stop putting the truffle oil on the fries. And stop bringing that black tar stuff to the table with the tortillas. It's awful. read more

Came here for a birthday dinner with family. I made a reservation and half my party canceled last minute and I was told in the future I'd have to pay $35 a head if my whole party didn't show. I understood this as I read it when I booked the place but the way they worded it when they said they wouldn't charge me was "it's ok. Everyone makes mistakes"... the food was amazing but our service was incredibly slow. The mocktails and cocktails we ordered were not very good and when we asked for a sprite to add to one of the mocktails to offset the unpleasant lemon flavor, the waitress just took the mocktails away and brought a sprite and we were almost charged for them all. Our table was right by the bathroom and the men's room door makes a huge BOOM every time it closes and the foot traffic was insane in that area. The live music was amazing but too loud for dinner conversation. The food was really good but the prices were more aligned with fine dining and the ambience was not. read more

I loved it! The atmosphere was great, the food was excellent, and the music set a delightful mood. Although the service could have been better?! Ambiance is top notch. If going with younger kids, you may want to sit outside on a warmer evening. They even provide blankets if you feel cold outside! The inside seating is a bit more of a date/party vibe with loud music. Service was super attentive. They constantly came to check on us and made sure we had what we needed. Food... the best way to describe is "ELEVATED". They use high quality meats and even have Campo Grande Iberico Pork. The food was absolutely delicious. The only suggestion I would have is that they re-evaluate how many tostadas and tortillas are given with each appetizer/entree. For example, the ceviche and Queso Fondido are really good but there's no way you can finish it with the amount of tostada/tortillas given. They were happy to bring us more but you don't want to have to wait for these kinds of appetizers because the cheese gets hard quick. read more

This 1 star is based off of the poor hospitality we received. My family and I walked in about 7:30 on Saturday night. We have a toddler. The host tells us we cannot get a seat as they are 100% booked for the night, all reservations are full. Even through the restaurant visibly had open tables. We stepped outside, checked the website and sure enough there were open reservations. We made an 8:00pm reservation turned around, walked right back in and checked in with a different host (possibly the manager). The first host looked stunned and from that point on refused to make eye contact with us. When we were seated our server was rude and short. Our medium rare steaks were cooked medium well. And when the bill came the server had her back turned and was already walking away before the bill hit the table. Definitely felt the rudeness for brining our child to dinner and for calling out the hostess on availability. Food was nothing special. Overall this place sucks. read more

Been looking forward to coming here since they opened. Evidently they had a fire in the kitchen which caused them to close for a month, and when we went they had been open for a week. And it showed. First off, we figured that we would arrive an hour early and have drinks at the bar. So we did, after having a drink I went to tell the hostess that we were there and we planned on keeping the reservation and we were waiting for 2 more people. She told us that we were not allowed to do that and that the bar is for walk-ins. I have been dining out for all of my life, and have been at some of the best restaurants in the country. This was new to me. And she was rather rude about, the other 2 women with her looked uncomfortable. I was like "okay, what do you want us to do?" she asked us to both come to the front and they would get us a table, my partner was like "are you serious?". Granted our company was not scheduled to arrive for another 30 mins. Such an awkward and uncomfortable situation. It was really unnecessary. And it created a negative energy for us. Like others have said - when you are paying this much money for a meal you have some expectations. I don't want to have to ask for flatware, or appetizer plates. They brought us our appetizer and we had nothing to eat it with, or any way to share it. I used the same dirty utensils throughout the entire meal. Dirty plates went uncollected, and I felt like I was chasing people to get drink refill. The food was good, some dishes were very good. But not enough to justify the price tag. The prices need to come down, otherwise this place will be empty once the newness wears off. The restaurant is beautiful, they did sink a lot of money into the ambiance, its such a shame that they didn't invest more heavily into training the staff. Terrible service. Scheduled a reservation for 3pm on 12/16 (start of happy hour) for my girlfriend's birthday dinner. Arrived at 3:03pm. Stood in the lobby area for over 10 minutes, hostess was nowhere to be found we peaked our heads into the restaurant and was noticed by what we assume to be servers or other staff and nothing happened. We left and went to another establishment, will not recommend to others and will actively tell others about our poor experience. Would not recommend as there are many other establishments that have good a reputation, service and food nearby. read more

First off our server Chris was great. If it wasn't for him I would have rated this spot 2 stars. Our appetizers were very good. We looked at the menu before we came and in the pictures it appears you get a lot more than you actually do. I ordered the Ribeye medium rare and it came almost medium well. They had to throw another one on, but by time it came out everyone was done eating. My son and his girlfriend split the $165 tomahawk steak which was also overcooked but they ate it anyway. Was definitely not worth the price tag. Overall it's a nice place, great ambiance but way too overpriced for what you get. We will not return. read more

My Daughters have been here a few times since they opened and raved about the food. We went for my SIL Birthday dinner on a Sunday evening. The atmosphere is nice,but we were immediately put off as the Hostesses were leaving on counter and barely greeted us and reluctantly took us to our table next to the kitchen. We ordered the Elote,mushrooms,ceviche,black beans and cocktails. The elote was 3 small pieces of corn on the cob with a sprinkle of seasoning and the mushrooms were swimming in a weird sauce and the beans tasted like they were out of a can. Then our drinks came,my Daughter ordered an espresso martini and it was served in champagne glass! Then our tomahawk steaks came out. We expected 40oz steaks at $180 each to be huge(they weren't) and tasted charred even though they were supposed to be medium rare. We left hungry and very disappointed. This is supposed to be a 5 star Mexican steakhouse,and it was at best a VERY OVERPRICED chain restaurant. Our bill for 4 people was over $500. Tried Origen tonight for our anniversary dinner (took our teens with us) and loved everything about it! The restaurant is gorgeous and an experience on its own. Our server, Sebastian, was fantastic and so helpful with the menu and recommendations. The food was also amazing, so much flavor and came out quickly. The complimentary tostadas, bean dip and salsa trio was a great start. Our order included the grilled Brie, two of the empanadas, the barbacoa, the tacos banados, fettuccine Alfredo, the Origen burger and the lava cake. Ambiance was incredible. What a unique vibe! That alone you need to check out. It's still new so they are ironing out kinks in the kitchen. Our server was phenomenal but dishes came out way too far apart. They had the large sexy wine glasses and great cocktail offerings. The food was good, but it wasn't overly the top amazing. I would however go back due to service and ambiance. Maybe try something else next time. They need to promote a specialty dish that gets people excited and in the door.
