This place is the truth. These guys roll out felafel that are fluffy and soft as a doughnut. It's something you just have to experience. Great half plate of chicken, fresh hummus and pita all for under $10. Plus to top it all off the Baklava is amazing. As others have said before, the service here is great. These owners take real pride in their food and restaurant. I come in here on Monday nights and they let me put on Monday night football and watch a game for 1-2 hours (I don't have cable, what can I say). I was chillin' at Danny Coyle's and I overheard the bartender tell these people about some garlic fries. The bartender described the fries as being perfectly oiled, tossed with garlic, and then on top of that, dipped in their garlic sauce. It sounded like death for a vampire and heaven for me! I took a brief break from my Bulliet Manhattan (slightly sweetened), and rushed over to "the Mediterranean place on the corner". Found! They have a great ambiance with the football games playing on the big screen and nice tables to enjoy some delicious rotisserie chicken. When I went to give my order, apparently everyone had the same thought as me because the phones were blowing up with phone orders. I order my garlic fries and 4 falafels. The falafels were crispy, donut-shaped, and the perfect chick peas color inside. It was a beautiful array of flavors when dipped with the garlic sauce. I then had the garlic fries and they were so good! It complimented our drinks so well AND it's so conveniently located next to the bar. The only thing was that the fries are a small order so make sure you order two or three. I rolled back into the bar with my small order of garlic fries and our group of four inhaled those things. In fact, after about 5 minutes, it was like "what garlic fries?". The BEST part! The person who took my order gave me a taste of their baklava for free. Perhaps I'm easily bought, I dunno...but this baklava was the business! It was SO GOOD! Then I thought, maybe it's good because it was free? Delicious and priced quite low for SF. We had a full dinner for two for less than $20. We shared a small hummus, I had the falafel wrap and he had the chicken shawarma plate. Both phenomenal. The small hummus' portion was perfect to share with one or two others. When we were done I was looking to more pita bread but decided against it. I think I'm hooked on their tangy garlic sauce that came with my husband's plate. My husband told me to try it and I ended up stealing most for my wrap. Amazing falafel! I got the falafel plate which came with 5 pieces of falafel, hummus, pita and a delicious fresh tomato and cucumber salad with fresh parsley. Seriously delicious. Very moist and soft falafel. It was perfect. The place is a very casual joint. There is nothing fancy here, but you will get quality food for a great price. We just wanted a quick bite late one afternoon, and we were happy to pop into this place. If we weren't moving soon, I'd be there often. Sad we only tried it out now. The service was also great. Oh my gosh, so happy we discovered this gem on haight st. A syrian friend suggested it when we were searching for a place that served shawarma and knafeh, hubs two favorite dishes. We were so excited to try it, we went the very next day! The inside was very updated, clean, airy yet still felt worldly with the decor and the arabic language floating through the air. The prices are PHENOMENAL - we both had a deliciously filling meal, dessert included for $20. Their knafeh is great, although I'd like to try it fresh and hot out of the oven. For 2.50, it's the least expensive yet most authentic we've found. The shawarma wrap was just the way we liked it (order it Syrian style!) and the falafel had my husband dreaming of home, saying it was the most authentic he's had in awhile - moist on the inside and crunchy on the outside served piping hot. All of our favorite dishes were listed on the menu and when we come back, I already have my next meal planned: fattoush salad and lentil soup! The family that runs the place couldn't be friendlier. This is a Middle-Eastern restaurant that truly gives a your taste buds a trip over seas. I have been to a few countries in the Middle-East and have not ate this well since. In a category that isn't the most popular, or abundant in SF this place really sets the bar. I went with my family (3 toddlers, 7 adults) The place is run by a family, the old fashion way, meaning everyone is there and working. They where very kind, they greeted us and said nice things about our family and kept asking if we needed anything. It wasn't just us we could over hear them talking to the other tables and customers. I am going to start with the food, menu is fairly simple, I would recommend you go with a few people (5-6) and share the plates or get a mixed plate. The portions are large, and like always middle eastern food is meant to be eaten "family style" meaning that everyone shares a few plates which works out great because you can all try some of the food! Everything came out of the kitchen (which you can see from your seat) fresh. We had hummus, which was super creamy and smooth, felafel and Dolmas. All of them where amazing, we finished all of them. They where all very fresh, I am very picky about my food being fresh, I hate wilted lettuce and stale bread! For our entree we got the mixed plate and chicken and beef shawarma and for the kids we got them some shawarma wraps. The kids loved their wraps, half was enough to get each of them full, we also got a plate of fries for everyone. These fries where bomb ! Slightly crispy on the outside and smooth on the inside, he made sure to tell us that the food is never frozen! and we could tell by the unique cuts in the fries. Then our main plate came, The meats where all cooked to perfection and there was more than enough on our plate, we had a decent amount of rice left over but all the cuts of meat where gone by now. So by now we where all about 10 minutes away from a food coma and remembered that we had 2 more plates, we had to take them home. Then they bring us a plate of dessert, Khanafa (we didn't order it but they insisted we at least try it) ! I said I would only take half of a piece but I kept going back for more. It was fresh ! and baked in house which is hard to find these days (most people buy their baklava's and desserts in boxes then re sell them). Oh and the bill wasn't that bad, for 10 people and that much food including lunch and dinner for 2 to go, I was amazed because I would never take my family to eat on Haight street, because most places aren't family friendly and expensive. With that being said, I already miss the place, I don't know how I have not been there by now but I will be going back and bringing whoever I can. Palmyra and Syrian food ROCKS. Everything we ordered was so delicious that we start craving this food again when we talk about it. Here's what we ordered: *Lentil soup: this pureed soup had a bit of rice in it and it was amazing. You'll eat it so fast. *Cucumber salad: just a simple, healthy salad, similar to one you'd get in Greece. *Mezze plate was comprised of the following items, which I piled onto their fresh pita bread: -- Falafel: Best falafel I've had in SF and in my Top 2 for Nor Cal. Fresh/fluffy/delicious/please. -- Taboulah: fresh, minty and with the right amount of tanginess. Perfect little salad. -- Baba ghanoush: housemade - chunky, garlicky, plenty of flavor. Should've ordered more! -- Hummus: completely smooth and decent, but not the star that the baba ghanoush is. -- Dolmas: small, tangy and popping with flavor. I would like to have some right now. *Turkish coffee: authentic and thick. Wait at least five minutes for it to settle and cool. *Hot tea: this was tasty black tea with a hint of mint. It was served to me in a giant mug. *Kanafeh: we normally order Baklava, but wanted something less sweet and sticky. This dessert is fresher-tasting, and the base of soft cheese gives the dessert a more grown-up flavor. To sum it up, get on over to Palmyra and order several items for you and your friends. After a long walk at ocean beach with my dog, I've decided to search a place to have lunch. This place caught my eye and wanted to try it out. The interior is styled like a family diner cute and clean. The people there was nice with great customer service and the food was amazing. My favorite Mediterranean place in the neighborhood! Cheap, great food, and I always get it to go! Things to get: 1. Falafel - I don't even eat falafel but this is a must try. Exceptions are made for exceptional things. 2. Hummus - Cheap and delicious. I put my dip my falafel in my hummus all day. No pun intended. 3. Shawarma - diced chicken with pita bread with sooo many sauces! Of course the hummus joins this party as well. I loved palmyra when I was here in September but I came here Saturday and was mildly disappointed. We were really hungry. I wish the man behind the counter was more knowledgeable or would've recommended something to us. I love my sandwich but my friend ended up getting a platter instead of the entree. Excellent Staff, possibly the most friendly of any restaurant I've ever been to. That says a lot. They really want to make you feel comfortable and cared for, as if you were a good friend eating dinner at their home. They are still warming up the space and getting into their flow, since they are new in town. Therefore the seating seems a bit burger joint(ish) which is what I think it used to be. The only problem is, which i think is impt, was the delivery. The delivery time was promised bet 45-60 min, when we really received it after an hour + 30 minutes. We also received the food messy. Palmyra is a small, no frills Mediterranean restaurant that seats a small number of people. When I went, the kitchen was constantly busy so I can only assume that a lot of people order pick-up rather than eat at the restaurant. The food at this location is ok, but I have had a lot better Mediterranean elsewhere. I went with the half-rotisserie chicken and mezza platter to share with my friend. The rotisserie chicken was bland tasting to me and definitely did not stand out to me as a dish. The mezza platter was average Mediterranean fare (I did like the falafel), but we didn't receive pita until we asked for it and never received garlic or hot sauce. The service here was very good and the staff was attentive, but that was offset by the fact that the dishes didn't come out correctly. I don't think I would recommend this to anyone unless they're just completely craving Mediterranean food for some reason. read more

I've lived in the Lower Haight for going on 3 years now and only recently did I finally try Palmyra, and man, I've been missing out! First of all, they have tasty wraps. So far, I've tried the shawarma and falafel wraps. They use a good quality pita that is pleasantly chewy and the falafel are fluffy on the inside, covered in sesame seeds on the outside. They are just filling enough to be a good meal. My only quibble is that the wraps are just lukewarm. The selection of sweets is tempting -- all kinds of almond cake, halvah and baklava on display. I did try the halvah and it was delightfully crumbly, covered in chocolate and toasted almonds. YUM. Finally, the employees who work here are all very sweet. I always sit outside with my dog while I wait for them to prepare my takeout order (10 min max), and they always bring my order out to me :) read more

Atmosphere (4/5): It's not high-end nor hipster, but more of a homey vibe. The seats are very uniquely shaped and can fit large parties but I can also see for it to be awkward in certain situations since there aren't clear borders in the round seats on some connecting booths. Low-key, casual, homey. All good if that's the vibe you're going for! Food (4.5/5): The hummus was great!!! The portion size looked smaller than usual in the beginning, but turned out to be perfectly portioned. It was enough to make me full, but not the hurting-feeling-because-I-feel-awkward-to-take-home-a-couple-pieces-left-but-can't-waste-it-either. My Chicken Schwarma was on the drier end -1 star, but my friend's beef schwarma and the hummus +1 star! Service (5/5): Someone, I'm assuming the owner, came around every table to ask if we were doing good and offered extra hummus or pita if we'd like. We'd just need to go up and ask the counter. (Skeptical me thought, Does this cost extra??) I didn't go for more because I was satisfied. The food also came out as fast as pho (which is crazy high standards and perfect for when you're starving). Bottom line: But this place made me feel like I was eating at his home. Just came here with a friend for lunch, and I would say that the prices are really fair. The dolmas were good (4 pieces for $2.50), and the baklava was to die for ($2 per piece). The reason why I give this 3 stars is because their chicken shawarma wrap ($5.95) meat was a bit dry.
