Of course I could always eat pho so we found this place that had a good rating plus it was near Little Italy where we wanted to check out. I place this is a cash-only place which we didn't realize but thank goodness we had cash. We ordered two bowls of pho and some fresh summer rolls some places this will be called spring rolls. The restaurant was that too busy but had quite a few patrons there. It was your traditional hole in the wall type of restaurant. I can't recall if staff wore masks. After being in New York for a couple days it was just so common to see mask can't recall when someone didn't wear one. The food was okay. It was rather Bland from what I'm used to. Not sure what's more Southern Vietnam Style versus Northern I has more of the strong flavors I'm used to. It did not provide much vegetables that I'm used to either other than cilantro and bean sprouts. Where was the Thai Basil or mint leaves? I guess I could have requested some. After finishing most my pho some other table asked for it. I added meatballs which was an extra cost. I liked that they added a a couple of meatballs. Other places skimp and just had one and cut it up 4 pieces. The prices for the food was great. The summer rolls were a good size and fresh. The description said it had both shrimp and pork. Reading some reviews, it sounds like Pho Bang is the last of several NYC locations of an international chain, a holdout from earlier days and one of the oldest Vietnamese restaurants still operating in the city. Keep that culinary history in mind when dining here. I ordered the pho with rare steak and brisket ($9). The bowl of soup was presented no more than 5 minutes later. Broth was mild, a little greasy, not bad. There was plenty of meat and the noodles were slurpable. Overall, an inoffensive bowl of pho. It's hard to find a cheaper bowl of pho in New York, though Chinatown would be the place for it. I personally wasn't blown away by the food; would've enjoyed more cilantro, and some hot chili peppers, even jalapenos, would have been nice. So one thing I didn't realize is pho bang and the ban mi restaurant are the same place, it's just two different menus. The place is about average for Vietnamese food, it has a good selection of ban mi. The soup is flavorful, and the meatballs in the noodle soup is great. The tendon however, is a bit too chewy. What a bust. For a $15 plate of Bun Cha Hanoi ($20 with tip), I want more than just a small plate of Vermicelli noodles, five pieces of pork, and absolutely no pickled vegetables. I got plenty of lettuce and other garnishing, but nothing else. Where are the pickled carrots and daikon? The meat could have been cooked a bit longer, it was a little dry and I feel some of the pork patties are cooked too thick. It made it a more cumbersome experience than it should have to eat this. The other grilled pork pieces were little slabs of sadness. It only helped the dipping sauce tasted pretty good and the noodles are great. However, I ask the same question: Where are the pickled carrots and daikon? For a cash only experience, I want more, and for a Chinatown establishment, the amount of food for the price is a downright shame. Shame on you Pho Bang. In the past, I have had excellent Bun Cha for a fraction of the price. This experience left me Bun Cheated. read more

The staff are fluent in Cantonese as well as their target customers. Tai Gau, regular bowl $8.75 Combination rice noodles beef soup with fresh eye of round and brisket Broth is average. Rice noodles are minimal in portion. Asian bean sprouts are provided at no charge. My bowl was filled to the rim and served piping hot which nearly scaled the poor bus boy/food runner's fingers. At meal's end I stood up paid my bill at the cashier rather than distributing it to the waiter to wait an eternity for change. Business cards and takeout menu are available for grabs. Great Banh Mi. Awesome service. No frills, yet I still had a great time here. The service here is quick and direct. The waiters here speak so many languages. At our table, we had friends who spoke Cantonese, Mandarin, and English, and our waiter understood all of us. I was amazed by his polyglot skills, but then again back to the food. I thought the meal was great. I love the pho, and it was a huge portion of noodles. I also had the barbecue pork chop which was sooo sooo yummy and well marinated. My friends split a delicious chicken banh mi (without mayo...now I usually have this, but one friend is not a fan, so I was flexible) and it was heavenly. At first, they thought they thought I was tipping low when I actually needed them to break a bill for me to tip more. I worked in food and retail for years and you cannot tell someone they are tipping too little. I have had customers before tip a lot as well as not tip and I couldn't do anything. Flavorful and the perfect serving. It's important to note that this restaurant is cash only. The location is cute and unsuspecting, the service is very good, and the pho is undeniably one of the best I've ever had. The noodles are perfectly cooked- not too soft- and the broth is insanely flavorful. I got the meatless pho, $6, and my dining partner got one of the meat phos, $11. For $1 more you can get an extra large bowl so with that information in mind, next time we're getting the huge pho and feasting. We received our food fairly quickly. This was my first time coming here and I would never come back the service was terrible. The waiter was extremely rude. There was a family of three that came at the same time as us and got seated towards the center, but the waiter decided to seat us right next to the entrance. They had already gotten their main courses, while we hadn't even gotten our appetizers. We were seated at a corner where it's harder to get their attention. They were more focused on the center area compared to us. While we were waiting to order, this Karen and her child seated themselves right next to us at the same table. They didn't ask us and welcomed themselves. She complained about us ruining her appetite, but it was the restaurant's fault for being unsanitary. We found a cockroach in the napkin holder and when my friend got her grilled chicken, the whole thing was raw. They only grilled the outside but when we cut it, the inside was jelly-like and pink. My favorite Viet place in the city! They have 3 locations (Chinatown Manhattan and 2 in Queens: Flushing and Elmhurst). I always come back to this place because their iced coffee is absolutely perfect, not too sweet! And the Bún thịt nướng chả giò (vermicelli noodles with grilled pork and egg roll combination) is so yum! It's exactly what I want every time and couldn't be better. I don't think this combo is technically listed on the menu but you can just order the grilled pork vermicelli and ask to add the egg roll (combine #41 and 42 on the menu). The beef brisket pho is also yum and never disappoints. It will hit the spot if you're craving a big hot bowl of southern style pho with a pile of bean sprouts and thai basil. The broth has all the right flavors. I personally go back and forth between this place and Thai Son because their pho is truly the best. But Pho Bang holds a special place in my heart for their vermicelli bowl and overall vibes. They have a wide variety on the menu, reasonable prices and super nice staff. Pho Bang is a decent place of a bowl of pho. The noodles are fresh and springy and the beef is plentiful for a great price. The price of a meal here is great! The meal is always hot (which is great in the winter) and very filling. They also give you hot tea if you ask nicely. The staff are great about customizing your order if you want just a bowl of beef tendon (which is what I got). The tendon is soft and beefy. I do want more but they give you plenty of rice noodles. K and my brother got the order of beef pho that includes eye of round, brisket, tendon and omosa (tripe). The brisket and eye of round slices were plentiful and so filling! K couldn't finish his beef, so he shared with me. Of course if you compare Pho Bang to Pho in other Viet populated cities (Philly), it cannot hold a candle to other Pho restaurants. A little pricey compared to some places, but they don't charge tax, which is an added bonus. The restaurant was about 75% full, but I got my bowl of pho and my plate of bean sprouts and greens in approximately 5 minutes. I like to add extra fish sauce into my pho and I did exactly that. The cuts of meat were good and generous. The beef did not taste super chewy like some places and did not have many fatty pieces that some places sneak in. The broth does lack some flavor depth, but fish sauce and sriracha can fix that. I do think this place serves the best pho in Chinatown. Give this place a try if you want a solid bowl of pho and some peace and quiet. They don't rush you out either, which I appreciated.
