Living in Claremont, this is my go to place for poke. The quality is good, have all the toppings i would like, and the portions are generous. This time I got a regular bowl half white rice, half salad, 2 scoops of salmon, 1 of tuna, crab meat, avocado, masago, seaweed salad, cucumbers, green onions, furikake, fried onion. 4 ATMOSPHERE This lil poke corner is amidst all the hipstery Claremont village restaurants but on the Indian hill side of the road. Parking within the structure is sufficient and not too difficult to find! Upon walking in, it's a casual to-go feel with metal tables leading up to the counter. The people working there were all pretty kind :) and weren't stingy in giving anything! Now as for the fooood... the method of ordering is by steps: 5 FOOD Step 1: Choose your base - choices of half/half or full of salad, brown rice, white rice, or chips. I had gotten half salad and half brown rice for the health factor. But sushi rice is amazing Step 2: Choose your mix - Adding all the yummies veggies! You have the choice of cucumber, onion, crab meat, avocado, cilantro, jalapeño. Step 3: Choose your protein: salmon, spicy tuna, tuna, octopus, shrimp, albacore, scallop, and seasonal. I got salmon, spicy tuna, and albacore! The spicy tuna really brought the two other fish together. Step 4: Seasoning and Sauce You can pick from the house sauces (mild, Med, and hot) which are all apparently pretty spicy starting from medium. Then ponzu, spicy mayo (i had these two sauces yum), cilantro twist (I had this on the side), volcano, and seasonal as well. At this point, they mix up all your fish and place it onto the chosen base. Then... you move onto the... Step 5: Toppings BEST part :) you can get masago, seaweed salad, jalepenos, edamame, ginger, wasabi, sesame, tempura, GARLIC CHIPS (yummm!), rice seasoning, and avocado! I got it all cept for the onions. The misubis ($1.75) seemed to be pretty popular as well. After ordering the bowl, it was soo fresh, tasty, and even with a regular it was a struggle to finish it. The salmon is nasty. Tastes extremely fishy and you can just tell by the overall taste of all the ingredients that it's not good quality. I now know what it must feel like for Mexicans to eat at chipotle or Chinese people to eat at Panda Express. This is not Hawaiian poke. It's a glorious concept, but it is not at all Hawaiian. First of all, in Hawaii, when someone asks about the sourcing of the scallops served, they will be reassured that the scallops are definitely not from the Philippines. Google it, there was a huge hep A outbreak linked to eating raw scallops in Hawaii. When I asked, the worker had no idea, went to ask his boss and came back to tell me (more like ask me): "the Atlantic Ocean?" lol I'm not buying that. And don't lie to customers, especially when hep A is involved. Second. You don't mix proteins. Crazies may mix salmon and ahi and tako and shrimp, but you'll never see people doing this in Hawaii. I was expecting the workers to make separate preparations for each protein, like different sauce and topping combinations for each, but when I saw them mixed all together, I stuck with just salmon. Third. Who the f has a poke bowl made of chips?? Lol I see poke nachos sometimes, and I guess hats what is going on here, but poke atop rice or salad is definitely the way to go. Fourth. "Ahi tuna" written on window to identify he protein options is redundant. Smh. The layout of this place is terrible. It gets really congested where the cash resister/bathroom/soda fountain is. Not very good planning if you ask me. A poke bowl in Hawaii will cost $7-$15 depending on the quality of the fish. The quality of ahi and hamachi here looked... Junk. The ahi looked like it was chemically treated and the hamachi was brown. Poke Dot is, and will, always be my go-to poke place whenever I'm in this area. Whenever I come here, the fish is always fresh and all the workers are patient and cordial! The prices are also reasonable and pretty average for this type of restaurant. The only constructive criticism I would offer would be the inconsistencies in the serving sizes! I always get the same bowl, protein, and toppings, but the portions differ between visits. It's not a huge deal, really, but it would be cool to see the serving be just a little bit more consistent.
