Delicious bakery! Quack's 43 Street Bakery sells a wide variety of cakes, pies, cupcakes, cookies and even coffee! There's nothing you CAN'T find here. I came here with my husband to buy a pie and chose their Coconut Cream Pie and also picked up a Nutella Tea Cookie. The Nutella Tea Cookie was extremely sweet, but soft and chewy. The Coconut Cream Pie tasted heavenly, and their crust was flaky, buttery perfection. The only thing is when I ate both the Nutella Tea Cookie and Coconut Cream Pie (Not at the same time!) I felt oddly sick. You could tell that there was a lot of butter and sugar in their desserts. I personally am not a big fan if I know things have been smothered in butter and sugar, but somehow I feel like I need to make an exception here. Their pastries really are divine and Quack's really is such a unique and delightful bakery. Many tables to sit and enjoy, parking is a breeze, and everyone is very helpful and friendly. This is my first time at Quack's. I've been looking for a good bakery. This place seemed promising and I liked the wide selection. I got a chocolate croissant, one of my favourite pastries. It was darker than it really should be, borderline burnt. But alas, the real kicker is that no chocolate was to be found on the inside (see photos)! Great bakery, big clean tons of pastry selections! Everything is kind of oversized, giant cupcakes, huge cinnamon rolls, but everything is beyond reasonably priced. Staff is super friendly and helpful, I was obviously perplexed on baked goods and so they offered to get my drink started while I wait. Boxed up my cupcakes in a really great box super sturdy wasn't worried about having a box of mush by the time I got home. It truly pains us to take a star away from Quack's because we have nothing but love in our hearts for our venerable local coffeeshop. We're there multiple times a week, we ordered our daughter's first birthday cake from here, we tout its many virtues to visitors, etc, etc. However. One of the best things about Quack's was that prices were beyond fair; in fact, we would argue, that fairness is what set Quack's above the other coffee places nearby (i.e. Flightpath or Epoch). A few weeks ago, those prices changed--and they changed DRASTICALLY. We go to Quack's, religiously, every Friday-Sunday, and our order is always the same: two medium toddies. That used to cost $3.04 after the discount for bringing your own cup ($0.75 per cup). Now that same order costs $4.39 (cup discount is now $0.50). That means a 44%--FORTY-FOUR!--increase overnight. (Yes, one of us is a pricing consultant.) Of course, prices always have to go up; 'tis the way of the world. We get it! But a sudden 44% change is draconian. We'll obviously still keep going to Quack's, and while we used to always get a baked good or two every morning, we've stopped. I like Quack's a lot. It's quaint is situated in an older part of Hyde Park. I had the best service there and everyone seems to know each other. Everything I tried was good - from coffee to tea. Didn't get to go in the actual store but actually got to taste the cupcakes to-go. I had a mint chocolate chip cupcake and it wasn't very special. Tasted like any ordinary cupcake with a whipped cream frosting. Cake wasn't very moist and the cupcake was overall mediocre. Honestly, given the hype and high reviews, I was expecting more. First, if the coconut creme pie didn't have shredded coconut in it, I wouldn't have been able to tell the pie was coconut. Very cool place. Sadly, I think I had it bookmarked for 3 years now lol Anyway, Quack's is located in the very charming Hyde Park neighborhood with lots of other great local shops around. It was quite busy for a Saturday morning, as you can imagine, and I was overwhelmed by all the options. They seem to have everything here, and is heaven for a sugar addict. I opted for the pumpkin bread (because I love pumpkin everything) and an iced coffee with almond milk in it. Both were too sweet for me but I'm not knocking the place...it IS a place for sweets ;) I really wish I would have tried the salted oak or the nutella tea cookies which were mentioned in others reviews. I don't think there's really anything more I can add about Quack's Bakery on top of what Errol M., Ashley S., and 219 other reviewers have described and/or expounded upon this quirky Hyde Park gem. Except perhaps this... I would sell my mother for a piece of the Toll House pie if the situation ever arose. Forget the Nutella tea biscuits; the whimsical cookies; eclairs the size of the Frost Bank Tower; or even the gorgeous pastels adorning the bevy of eye-catching cakes. Yes, they're fabulous. But you will never find me hunkered down over any of those goodies the way you would find me taking over a Quack's Toll House pie. And if you ever DO see me there with a slice of that in front of me, approach with caution: If you try and take even one of those delicious chocolate chunks that each sweet slice is packed with, I will probably stab you with my fork. That's something I can understand if it's a popular spot, the reason why I'm giving this place a one star is because the service is awful. There were several people at the counter and not a single one even acknowledged us or asked us if we want help/to order. The vibe was very awkward and uncomfortable. They made eye contact but said nothing and went back to being on their phones. Even after more customers came in they only said something when the other customer exchanged confused glances with us. What a wonderful cafe! I had breakfast here with friends on our last day in Austin. I had quiche, a cortado, and a cookie. All were delicious. I love how pleasant it is inside and the staff was radiating positivity and helpfulness. Everyone was super nice. The cookies from Quack's are BEAUTIFUL WORKS OF ART. Seriously, it's a treat just to see the decorated sugar cookies. On the other hand, I had hated the staff there for years. Then, I've been giving it a two-year-long second chance because the treats are good and because I had had a couple good experiences. Then, today, we went to get cookies. First of all: I think the system is terrible. You wait in line, then you have to cut in front of the line to point out the desserts you want to buy. Then, when you make it back to the register, they never know how much to charge you because they don't write it down when they get the treats from the case. There are always two or three people sharing one register. No one EVER comes out of the kitchen to the rescue when it gets super busy. They redid the counter recently and it still really, really sucks. Second: My mom and I waited in line while three people helped the guy in front of us buy two coffees. It took maybe seven minutes - to purchase two coffee drinks from three staff people. Then, it was our turn. I said - "Hi. We want to order cookies and we need a box." Then, the guy followed us back to the cookie part - in front of the three people behind us in line. Then, I reminded him - "We need a box." Then, the guy who was using the register - got the cookies without washing his hands (!) first and put them on the counter - where they cut sandwiches, etc. (The counter!) Then, when we finished our selections, only then did he get a box and put the cookies inside it. Then, he HANDED IT TO ME and went back to the register. I asked pretty calmly over the heads of the two people who were behind me who are now in front of me) - "Do you mean to have us wait in line again?" He answered: "There is nothing I can do." (Interlude, if I was one of those customers I would have insisted we go ahead and pay. So, customers are rude, the staff is dumb, AND the system sucks.) We waited in line. Again. The guy turned to help the person BEHIND us. There was a woman in front of us who was next. So, we waited for those three orders to get handled slowly by THREE staff people. One staff member was wandering around with two brown paper lunch bags full of coins. Really, WTH? When we got to the front, the same stupid guy realized he didn't know the prices of the cookies he himself had just gotten from the case. So, he went back to do some research. Finally, we paid. I asked: "Are you new?" He didn't meet my eyes - "Well, uh, yeah." (The other two staff members just standing there stupidly.) I said - "Next time, I would suggest that you take the box of cookies you filled and walk to the register and ring us out instead of making us wait in line twice." His answer -"....mumble mumble maybe." NO APOLOGY. NO THANK YOU. NO NOTHING. Are these three staff members idiots because it's the summer? Are they idiots because they are new? Why hasn't the owner ever made a system to WRITE DOWN THE COST OF THE COOKIES when they are boxing them? Is this the same old same old? Is this the new stupid? Please HELP ME UNDERSTAND. Without a doubt Quacks has the best desserts in Austin. I would even say their short bread cookies are the best I've ever had. Not only are they always adorably decorated but quite tasty too. I'm also a big fan of the vegan lemon cupcake, tea cookies, and peanut butter chocolate cake. In college I lived down the street and would come to Quacks to study and snack. Cute, quaint place in Hyde Park aka my hood. Surrounded by lots of other cool things to check out, almost worthy of a Duval street *something* crawl. Plenty of parking and open til midnight, it was the perfect place to reconvene after filling our tummys with Thai food. At first arrival, the place was packed inside. I was wandering up and down the glass to view all the goodies they had to offer. Decided on a chocolate cupcake with peanut butter icing for an impressively cheap $2.99, becauase the cupcake was enormous. Also got a drink with hibiscus and apple juice in it, with ice. It was a nice combo, wish I could remember the name of the drink from the menu. The downside was we happened to sit at an uneven table, and then to our right there was a couple sitting less than an arms length away all googley-eyed with each other. I suppose thats our fault, we could've sat somewhere else. And then....we ordered some cute looking mustache cookies (or were they shortbread) that had cute names like the "Teddy Roosevelt" and the "Burt Reynolds" because apparently March is mustache month. Unfortunately they tasted like dog biscuits, per Errol. The guy has a way with words, stole them right from my mouth. All 5 mustches, unique in form and color ironically all tasted like nothing. So maybe they were just for show? At least they have free wi-fi. Overall I like the place a lot, seemed like a good amount of seating inside and out for those who like to enjoy the nice weather and to people watch of course. So many options from the bakery, freshly made. Even breakfast and lunch options. Tried the mocha, quite tasty and not some weak crap like Starbuck's offers. I think the prices were very reasonable, and considerably cheap compared to others. There are so many more things I want to try. I definitely love that its within walking distance of my place (across from my fave grocery store) and other cute local spots. They serve sandwiches from Fricano's, and I got the Turkey Special. Quack's serves them with a pickle (optional) and with a bag of chips (get the sweet potato ones if you're into sweet potato). Got a 20 oz iced caramel latte with it and everything came out to a little over $11. Which I am totally OK with since the sandwich was packed with ingredients and got a medium coffee. Service was great, superb even. The manager started to take my order, but seemed distracted and politely asked another employee to help me since he couldn't focus on me (due to another issue he had to deal with that the new person serving me relayed to me). Everyone that works here seems to be so genuinely nice and it really ups the atmosphere. Plenty of outlets, plenty of tables for such a small space, and the big windows make it a great place to study or work at during the day. Lots of natural lighting. Wi-fi errs on the faster side compared to all the coffeeshops/cafes I've been to. They have a huge selection of desserts: pies, cookies, croissants, cakes, cupcakes. You name it, they probably got it. Can't tell if it's in a neighborhood or on the edge of one; either way, the location makes it feel, for lack of a better word, homey...or I guess, neighborly? Gosh I was really hoping their stuff would be good since my wife and I had been searching for a cute date spot to get goodies every now and then. The ambience is pretty cute and the location is in a spunky part of town but the baked goods were just not that yummy. The lighting out side is terrible so it is hard to find this place at night. As for the baked goods ..... where should I start? Well we got a nutella cookie, boston cream cupcake, and a chocolate cream pie. The nutella cookie was super dry and the "nutella" part of it is just a glob of nutella sitting on top. The boston cream cupcake was dry and a bit under-sweetened, it almost tasted like a muffin. The worst of them all was the chocolate cream pie which we ended up throwing away after a handful of bites. Every bite had egg shells in the crust. - Every. single. bite.! I just cannot stand biting into a moist pie crust(expecting a little bit of heaven to tickle my tastebuds) and then getting pieces of eggshell instead of a smooth finish!! It's like going to an oyster bar and getting sand/shell/etc in every oyster. The shuckers are supposed to be pros so that should never happen right? I guess I will never be able to forget the experience I had with the pie .. I do not know if I will be going back but I really hope I could brave the eggshells sooner than later to give these guys another try. The last time I was at Quack's, I was waxing on and on about a failed relationship to a distant relative of Amelia Earhart who wouldn't shut up about how annoying it was that Hilary Swank got cast in that movie that nobody watched. I mean, yeah, you can barely understand me and my whining through the baked goods I'm shoveling into the hole in my face, but do you really have to add insult to injury by bringing up Hilary Swank when you know I have a personal vendetta against her!? I digress. Needless to say, I was long overdue for a visit. I ordered an iced coffee to start on while I took about an hour to decide on what I wanted. I narrowed it down to two and did what anyone trying to cut back on calories would do: I ordered both of them. The sour cream coffee cake and the vegan lemon blueberry cupcake. I can't decide which one I liked more. When baked goods are this perfect, I'm going to choose to believe that calories don't exist. Because why would they? The staff are all awesome, the atmosphere is great for reading, eating, studying, reading, chewing, talking, not talking, and any other activity you could want to do in a coffee shop or a bakery. This is your charming and cozy local neighborhood coffeeshop and bakery. Their baked goods are humongous and amazing! They have literally everything - croissants (highly recommend!), danishes, muffins, scones, cakes, pies, etc. and even pre-made sandwiches from Fricano's. Also, the pastries are literally bigger than my face and the cookies are the size of a plate. And it's all reasonably priced! I mean what more can you ask? In the mornings especially around ~9am there is typically a very long line that extends toward the back - but don't be daunted they are usually fast and I did not wait very long (under 15min total). Also they have kolaches, ham and cheese croissants, and quiches in the morning for breakfast! Parking is not an issue as there are several spots in the plaza. They have WiFi and a lot of outlets along the walls. It is a little small of a place so during peak times it may be hard to find a seat. The sound level is medium with light chatter, so I would recommend bringing headphones if you need to actually work. I didn't notice until I opened the package that it was very dark around the edges - burnt? Whatever, I'll eat around it. I couldn't! If you like thick crust pie (cause you know its the best part!), then this is your sweet shop of choice. The pie crust here is so thick, you'll need a pretty sharp knife to cut through the confectionaries and they are mind bogglingly good. I highly recommend the key lime pie. Tart, sweet fresh bursting lime flavor in a gelled custard with thick crust. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm I tried some apple pie too but it sadly wasn't that great. A bit too mushy. I would have never known of this place if it weren't for a friend inviting me out for coffee. What a fun place. What a fun area! I sometimes find myself stuck in my downtown Austin bubble, so I'm always happy to venture out. Hyde Park reminds me of my old stomping grounds in Atlanta. The barista was patient with me, as I changed my mind a few times, which I always appreciate. I'm notorious for being indecisive. I was looking for a place to sit and read my book, and I've been wanting to try Quack's for a while, so I stopped by after lunch. It took me quite a while to decide what I wanted from their assortment of cookies, cupcakes, cakes, pastries, etc., but I finally settled on a chocolate ginger cookie for $1.99. The hibiscus lemonade sounded very refreshing, and the 16 ounce was only $1.39. Both were great, but the chocolate ginger cookie was the standout of the two. It was SO moist, when I went to break off a piece, there were no crumbs. You know how really crispy cookies send a shower of crumbs in the air when you break them apart and they make that *snap* sound? Yeah. This cookie was silent. It was absolutely perfect, from the consistency to the chocolate chips, to that spicy hint of ginger. It wasn't too sweet either, which I loved. Probably the best cookie I've had in ages. The hibiscus lemonade was good too, but you have to like the flowery herbal taste of hibiscus tea. Wasn't as sweet as I was expecting, but not in a bad way. I wish I had been hungrier so I could have tried one of their paninis.. the Turkey and Brie (with cranberry compote) looked like it had the potential to be delicious, but alas, I wouldn't know. I picked a table by the window, and it was nice and quiet since most of the other people were working on their laptops, so I finished my book in no time. My only complaint is the flies.. there were at least 3 that kept hovering around my purse. I don't know how these flies are getting in, but they were pretty annoying. Yes even the lettuce gets the panini treatment, which gives the lettuce a wilty texture, so I'd suggest you order this sammy without the lettuce. They don't make the sandwich bread in-house. While I was satisfied with the sandwich, it wasn't outstanding. My Crowbar latte had 4 shots of espresso. Smooth and strong. I'm awake Austin! Excellent espresso! There are plenty of tables, and a coffee house atmosphere with eclectic music. Next time I'm in the area, I NEED to try the key lime tart at Quack's. Quack's earns 4 stars because it's a great choice for bakery treats and coffees when you're in the Hyde Park area. But I wouldn't drive out of my way to get to Quack's if a sandwich was what I was craving. On the other hand, if fresh pie and an excellent iced espresso were on my mind, I might drive out of my way for their great bakery. My suggestion to the owners is to create a 5-star sandwich which Yelpers will dream about at home or at work. Create a sandwich which entices hungry Yelpers to drive out of their way for. A 5 star sandwich wins out over the competition. Quack's has the atmosphere of a relaxing coffee house with eclectic music. The owners may wish to get more creative with the decor and the "vibe", if they want to create an unforgettable impression on new customers. On my next visit to Austin, I look forward to returning to Quack's if I'm in the neighborhood, and I recommend that you give their great bakery a try! read more
